for what it is a chinese takeaway it is as good as what you can expect, freshly cooked for collection and resonable prices.

First order from here…. Ordered through Uber eats as I had a promo code. This has got to be one of if not the worst Chinese takeaways I’ve ever had. The egg fried rice was like cous cous and had weird flavour, the ribs were not bad but again bland and sauce was bland, the curry was disgusting, dark in colour and a oily bland mess, the salt and pepper chicken was tiny little peices and had literally zero seasoning at all. And finally the prawn crackers tasted old and stale! Couldn’t get much worse if they tried! Would Never order from here again!

Ambience and food was good and the price is reasonable

I had duck curry, special rice and chips all of which were well cooked and tasty

Chicken balls very soft 😋 salt n pepper chilli chicken wings very nice, chicken chow mein was good too. Chicken green pepper in black bean sauce was nice, not too salty Curry sauce could be thicker.

I love the King's Chef and it's my favourite local Chinese takeaway (though not quite as good as the legendary Kung Fu Kitchen). The top tip is to order from the Chinese Menu which has a completely different set of dishes from the English Menu. My personal favourites are Ma Po Tofu, Lamb with Cumin, Beef and Radish and Braised Aubergine. If, like me, you cannot read Chinese, you can use Google Translate to understand roughly what things are then point at the menu!

Very delicious food, price is also very cheap. We ordered 4 dishes plus 2 portion of rice and costed only around £40. Also very friendly staff. I would easily recommend this restaurant to anyone.

What can I say. My partner and I decided to not go for our usual restaurant of Chinese food because they don’t deliver, so we went for this one which is high rated on Uber eats, and I couldn’t be more disappointed. We went for a roast duck chow mein which wasn’t bad but wasn’t great and a salt and pepper munchy box. The box brings egg fried rice, which was sooooo bland, and it literally tastes like an uncle bens microwaveable egg fried rice really, same thing, no flavour whatsoever, it brings 4 chicken balls which they have more dough than chicken, which is disappointing, brings some ribs which once again no flavour, sweet and sour chicken half (we had some chicken bits but definitely no sweet and sour with that) and a curry sauce which wasn’t the besttttttt curry sauce I’ve had. Also it was covered in salt, no pepper which is ridiculous since it’s a salt and pepper box, and a bunch of vegetables which is ridiculous because like it didn’t make sense there, the only thing I could taste of that was salt, salt and grease everywhere. I don’t recommend it at all, there’s better places in Reading to eat, I am not sharing my common Chinese restaurant because I like it too much to be sold out.

Ordered via deliveroo. I ordered Wonton soup, crispy seaweed, and crab soup with egg and prawn toast. Everything was with flavour and I can definitely say, my cravings were satisfied. The flood came 2 minutes late from the ETA but it was worth the wait. They also added complimentary crackers which I really appreciate.

This place has gone downhill. Very rude customer service on the phone, the lady that answers the phone is extremely rude and has no knowledge of good customer service. I have not received items that I ordered on multiple occasions. The lady does not even apologise for their mistakes and will tell you it will be refunded, when actually they won’t and they’ll forget about it. We have been regular customers at this place for the last 7 years and the service has become rubbish since the employees changed, which is very disappointing! The food is still decent, however I would STRONGLY REFRAIN from ordering here if you want to have a stress free takeaway order. AWFUL SERVICE!

Had a simple curry chicken and boiled rice,it was putrid,chicken consistency was as though it had been previously digested and regurgitated. The spring roll was almost acceptable, the wrap was thick and chewy,the meal cost £12.70,most of it went in the waste food bin

The food here is always exceptional, good quality and tasty, love the honey ribs, Singapore style rice noodles and king prawn fried rice the best. Just wish they’d also offer fortune cookies.

Food was extremely hot when arrived which we thought was good until we realised that the whole mean had been reheated in a microwave. Chips were hard, chow mein and sweet and sour chicken tasted funny and the noodles were horrible. Rice was hard and tye curry sauce was vile. Very dissapointed. A terrible shame as we order from here a fair bit, but after that and feeling unwell after, never again !

Our first experience was superb - it was fresh, not greasy, arrived super hot and it had been made with love! Will definitely use this Chinese as our go to now, amazing food!

I ordered via just eat, getting the crispy shredded beef, egg fried rice, seaweed, green thai curry and bbq ribs and i must say im very impressed. Cooked to perfection. The guy from the store who delivered my food was also very quick and lovely. 10/10 highly recommend

I cannot fault this Chinese when it comes to the food. It is amazing. It is perhaps the one thing that keeps me from giving this place a poor rating. My experience has been soured by the fact that I purposely paid to have an uber gift card sent to a loved so they could redeem it via the app and get a Chinese. However it seems this company marks itself as a 'grocery store' purposely to prevent people paying via Uber Gift Credit/Cash. This has soured me to no end and have now proceeded to order from another Chinese as I feel this behaviour is dodgy as hell.

We had a set meal for two and it was fantastic, great flavor across a large amount of food (exelent value). Now I will be ordering from them again and see what I get, what I can gather from other revues is that they suffer from a lack of consistency - I will keep you posted :)

Today we decided to order a takeaway given how hot the weather is, didn't want to turn on the stove. King's Chef is a Chinese takeaway on London Road that offers traditional Chinese dishes from their Chinese menu in additional to the normal menu of Westernised Chinese food. We had ordered from their normal menu before and we thought the dishes were hit and miss, mostly mediocre. That's why this time round was such a surprise for us. Their Chinese menu is available in a hard paper copy if you pick it up from the takeaway, but not available online or via Uber Eats/Deliveroo. We ordered 4 dishes and each of them were absolutely fantastic. This was our first time ordering from their Chinese menu and we were blown away by the quality of the chef's cooking, I'm amazed they've managed to hide away in an unassuming takeaway. It is as the flyer says: "restaurant quality cuisine at takeaway prices". I consider the quality to be restaurant-level, on par with Memory of Sichuan, even above Kung Fu Kitchen and Home Cooking! From the left, the first dish is #22 Beef brisket with radish, a light stew with buttery chunks of fatty brisket, stewed with mooli radish that soaks up all the flavour. They were pretty generous with the meat too. To the right of that is #34 Yu-xiang shredded pork, my personal favourite dish of all time. Sweet, sour, spicy, and salty - all 4 flavours in one dish, made with black fungus and green peppers just as it should be. Next is the cold dish #3 Sliced beef and tripes in chilli sauce - the perfect dish to cool down in the summer with, numbingly spicy and garlicky with plenty of texture between the beef slices and the tripe. Lastly on the right is #17 Sweet & sour pork, but not the Cantonese version made red with ketchup. This is guo bao rou which is the Northeastern version, the signature dish from my hometown Harbin. It's made with slices of pork tenderloin, double fried extra crispy from the potato starch batter, and a light yellow with a gingery vinegar sauce. This was done exceptionally well, to the point I wonder if the chef is Northeastern, as it's a dish that is very difficult to get accurately and the only UK restaurant I've had it done correctly is Chummy Yummy in Hillingdon. All in all an incredible set of dishes with no faults whatsoever, our new favourite takeaway and we'll be sure to order from them again as our go-to takeaway for traditional Chinese dishes. And with such a varied menu, it'll be years before we exhaust our options hence why I'm shilling for them here to get others to try it out too! Absolutely delicious sauce, nice and crispy chicken, fresh, and delivered way earlier than expected. Highly recommend. My new favourite Chinese. Faultless.

**Honest Review** I have been using Kings Chef for many a moon now what I can tell you is this, when they get it right the food is very good . I can recommend the Sweet n Sour Chicken HK style & Sauteed Spare Ribs with Pepper & Spicy Salt. They often give you free Prawn crackers which is a nice touch. There is one member of staff who is very decent & has high standards.. if there is any problems with the order just ring them straight away. They only accept cash (front desk) which must have impacted profits over the years. The egg fried rice should be the priority of the owners to put everything into being the freshest softest healthiest taste to compliment whichever the customer chooses to add with it this is an area they should look at for improvement also the outside overall look of this takeaway needs a fresh lick of paint to make it stand out more so important to get the basics right to attract new customers. Spellbinding Chinese. The free orangeade was just the icing on the cake. Food was lovely, no complaints. Chips portions are HUGE. Don’t let the low google reviews fool you, 4.3 star on deliveroo! Website was easy to use and got 10% off! Satays are a wolf are sheeps clothing.

Ropey chinese food. Honestly not great food and would go else where next time. Black bean sauce was nearly tasteless. Chicken balls....the meat was purple maybe they gave me pork balls instead really wasn't sure what it was and they were fried to a crisp deffo worst iv had. Noodles were very basic. Sticky prawns are battered prawn 'MEAT' lol nothing like what i expected. The only plus was chilli chicken and garlic it was actually spicy and the sauce was good!!! but the chicken meat was bad... First time visit, walk-in order which was sorted quickly. Ordered salt & pepper ribs, Singapore chow mein, Crispy chill chicken & mixed veg rice. All tasted lovely as did the free prawn crackers :) They only take cash when ordering in store.

I’ve ordered from here a handful of times and most of the time good service but the last order I went for (house chow mein) has made me never want to order again I’ve been stuck on the toilet for 5 days straight.

Ordereda few dishes yesterday. One of the dish was roast chicken, but what i received was a few pieces of chicken that looked oil fryed plus lots of fried potato strips. Wasnt impressed.

Food is good and delivery is quick and people very polite. I am local and order often. However I can only give 3 stars because my meal is ruined every time they send out a cold drink that is really warm. Surely you can refrigerate your cold drinks.

Really great food..never had chinese takeaways in reading as those boxed ones in town center do not taste authentic but ordered from here at least 7-8 times during last two months. Managed by great people. They are a small business so are a bit short staffed but the food quality was really great and the behaviour of owner is really humble so guys please think about supporting the small businesses around you before giving those 1 star reviews on the smallest of matters.

Ordered before the restaurant opened and when it arrived it was cold! The veg wasn’t cooked it was thrown in raw and the dish didn’t taste how it normally would. This was very dry and didn’t have a lot of sauce in it. Will never order here again!

Ordered via Deliveroo (twice this week!) and I cannot fault it at all, amazing food and reasonably priced, great chicken balls, amazing curry, it was all great!

We generally order spicy udon noodles but last night the order we received was extreally hot all I can see in noodles was just red chillies .. just after sexond bite my mouth was burning and tummy was upset . I usually eat a lot of spicy food but this is beyond I could imagine !!

Ordered via just eat. Curry was amazing, wholesome chunks of mushroom lovely crunch to onion and nice large slices of flavorsome beef., with a glossy thick curry sauce with just enough spice to give it a bite without masking other flavours. Chips unfortunately not the best but will order rice next time as my wife said her rice was great as was the special curry same great balance of flavour with lovely prawns.

Was really looking forward to my Chinese tonight, ordered a chicken curry and chow mein. The curry was flavourless and full of spice rather then flavour, chicken tasted like water and had a horrible texture. Chow mein also flavourless. the worst Chinese I have ever had!

We did contact JustEat, who told us, like we knew, it is up to the restaurant to refund. As the restaurant had blocked us we had to ask someone from JustEat to call them to force them to refund. Arrived early, friendly rider, lovely hot food

Food was average, nothing special. Delivery was on time.

Everything pretty much flavourless. Even the egg fried rice was bland.

Squid was lovely full of flavour the mixed platter was good although the satay chicken was a little chewy the duck was good the delivery time was extended after ordering however the delivery and updates were early pleasant delivery staff

Awful ! Ordered at 7.20 still not received our order at 8.44 called them and it still wasn't with the driver ! My partner decided to go and collect himself then wait any longer . Food was horrible , tasted like reheated rice, satay chicken was so so salty we couldn't even eat it. Chicken balls were hard and basically just batter. Never will I order from here again !

We're given a 40 minutes wait. Then they added 30 mins on top . Actually arrived on time, after 40 mins , which was nice. Got free prawn crackers. The food was hot and very tasty. Defiantly order from here again .

Food was ok but nothing special. I had egg friend rice, chicken chow mein (both quite average/bland) and chicken in yellow bean sauce with cashew nuts (spicy and full of flavour). It arrived early and was warm so I was pleased with that.

Food arrived fast and piping hot. we enjoyed all the dishes as always. This restaurant always remember our special request to leave out a veg I don’t like which is much appreciated and the delivery driver was polite as always.

Delivery was very fast. They lady on the phone said 45 mins too 1 hour for delivery, which is standard for deliveries. But within 35 minutes the food arrived. Piping hot and delicious. Would definitely be buying from here again.

Food was really tasty. We order beef in black bean sauce with green pepper but there were more mushrooms than green pepper which was a little disappointing as we don’t like mushrooms and this wasn’t clear on the menu. Everything else was lovely, crispy chilli beef was just the right amount of crispy and none of the dishes were too spicy. Would order again.

Although the food was late - they are the best chicken balls we have come across in the 6 years we’ve lived in Reading. They were gorgeous! So for that reason the lateness can slide with me this time.

We usually have great food from here but last night it arrived early but cold, we had to microwave it and the veg spring rolls had next to no veg in them. It was disappointing considering how good the last takeaway from them was.
