Really lovely food and great options. The staff were brilliant, especially Ash, Ethan and Tristan, all went above and beyond, really well presented, attentive, friendly and kind to us.

Visited the Old Thorns main restaurant last night to celebrate a family event and we were all really disappointed. Lying on the floor underneath the chairs was food debris from a previous meal, including a whole bread roll that was very hard – suggesting it had been there a good while. The table had that stickiness that you often feel in cheap pubs. The lass serving us took our drinks order and returned with the wrong bottle of wine which she then opened and started to pour before telling us it was different to the one we’d ordered as they’d run out of that vintage. We felt obliged to accept it (it was ok, just not what we had ordered). We all went straight to mains and having seen the small portions served at neighbouring tables all ordered a side of triple cooked chips. £5 for a very small bowlful equating to around 50 pence a chip – very poor value. Those who ordered duck said it was very undercooked (it did look very red) and about one quarter of the sea bass was inedible it was so tough. The chicken was ok. The vegetables were woefully undercooked and it was probably a blessing that the portions were minute. While we were eating a waitress started gathering the unused starter cutlery from the table – please wait and do that between courses and ask first. We ordered a mix of deserts though three of us plumped for the fruit crumble with custard. More like crumble without custard. We asked the waitress three times for more custard, she agreed but none arrived. Then just as we finished desert the bill arrived – no ‘was everything ok?’ or would we like coffees. I said that we didn’t feel it right to pay for the three crumbles as without the custard they were very dry and not very enjoyable; the waitress disappeared to come back with a bill with one desert removed – she hadn’t listened so we gave up and paid. Summary: the waiting staff looked completely untrained and the service, while they did their best to smile, was very poor. The food was poorly cooked (it had the feel of being rushed) and the portion size was just so small it was silly. The experience cost a little over £40 a head and it felt more like £15 a head value. Best avoided for a while until standards improve significantly.

Previous experience was good but this time it was really poor. Starters delivered at different times and only arrived when chased. Carvery was cold and poor selection of vegetables. Potatoes were under cooked and most hard. The only thing that was hot was the gravy! Staff were lacking and also those that were there were not well trained on etiquette. Trying to clear plates before everyone had finished. Atmosphere was poor.

My partner and I were looking for a place for Sunday lunch and found the Old Thorns which had a carvery which we like. Booking through their website was easy, although on the day we went the place was pretty empty, so we could have just walked in. My partner walks with crutches and there was a slope up to the main entrance from the car park, fortunately I was able to drop her by the door and then park. Also there were steps up from the reception area to the restuarant and we didn't spot there was a ramp to one side until after we were at the top. The staff were friendly and attentive, when we got to the restaurant one of the bar staff looked over and said "My colleague will be with you in just a moment", which is always welcome. The waiter who showed us to the table checked that my partner was OK with steps before taking us there. It was only one up to a slightly raised section and one down on the other side, but the consideration was appreciated anyway. We had a nice table for two with one of the chairs having a view over their golf course, although the other had its back to the view which was a bit of a shame, but the layout of other tables probably militated against us both being able to see. When the waitress came to see what we wanted to order she also brought a carafe of water without us needing to ask which is a nice touch. We both decided we didn't want a starter, so we went to the carvery. The meats on offer were turkey, gammon and beef, all of which were nice and not dry or overcooked, although the beef was a bit too pink for my partner's taste, but the slices were generous, not tiny silvers. There was a reasonably good choice of vegetables including peas, carrots and parsnips, also they had pigs in blankets, stuffing balls and good sized roast potatoes as well as boiled potatoes too. Probably the only negative point is that the drinks (especially the wine) were rather expensive, but overall we had a very positive experience and it's certainly somewhere we'll come back to again.

My partner and I stopped here for something to eat and drink while charging our car. I asked the barman if they had any alcohol free beer. They did not as they had run out. He very helpfully suggested a shandy and I thought, ok, I haven't had one of those for a long time, why not? Then when we ordered our overpriced food and paid we saw that the shandy had cost £6.30. so I questioned the barstaff about this and pointed out that this was very expensive and, in essence, was overcharging me since a half a beer and a half pint of lemonade (sugary fizzy water) would be cheaper than that. Not much cheaper since they charge £4 for a pint of this "lemonade". But, nevertheless, it would be cheaper. So they say they can't do anything about it - they don't set the prices. But they ask me if I want to speak to a manager. I say yes and they call one down. When Erica arrives she repeats what they've said, shows no understanding of my complaint and talking to me like she thinks I'm stupid says "well you've drunk some" (a mouthful..) and "you saw how much it was and paid". Well, obviously, we didn't notice the rip off price straight away. Now, I did lose my temper a bit at this point and ended up shouting across the bar from my table that they were taking the piss.. so Erica decided to throw me out. I said if you want us to leave you will have to refund us for our meals. So, having made such an issue of refunding a pound she ended up giving us all our money back. Good job, well done.

Went for a Sunday Carvery for a birthday and definitely will not return. As soon as we sat down the waiter asked what would we like to drink. At that stage we hadn’t even seen a menu! I had a prawn cocktail which had lettuce with brown bits on, not appetising at all, my partner had the pate which also looked non appetising ! After waiting for a waiter to come back to the table to clear it and inform us where we should go for our Carvery, we hadn’t been here before, we gave up waiting and found it ourselves. The Carvery was ok but we had to look for horseradish sauce, gravy etc. empty bowl of cranberry sauce and all was in a mess! Got back to our table with our food and the table still hadn’t been cleared from our starter. We put our dirty plates on the opposite table, which also hadn’t been cleared, the people were leaving as we arrived! At no time did a waiter return to our table, not to ask if everything was ok, not offered more drinks or the dessert menu. A large party of guests eating at the same time as us cleared their own table after their starters! No waiters to be seen we left our table and went to the till to pay, giving up waiting for dessert. After pointing out the poor experience we had we were given a 10% reduction on our bill. Needless to say we wouldn’t recommend and certainly wouldn’t return!

We’ve been coming to Old Thorns for our family Boxing Day meal for over ten years as we’ve grown to expect a high standard of food and service, however this year will be the last. Standards have slipped badly, which seems to be recognised by many as the place was almost empty - a first for this time of year, it’s usually packed. Food was tasteless and generally poor. Meat was acceptable but no Turkey option available, a shame for Christmas time. Veg was a very limited peas, carrots and white cabbage, alll was lukewarm. Stuffing was inedible, Yorkshire’s floppy and gravy thin. Veggie option was a laughable ‘carrot wellington’ which was left by 4 or of 5 people. Starters and pudding were limited and uninspiring. A great shame as previous years have been excellent and we look forward to our meal at Old Thorns but after todays experience, we won’t be returning.

We booked a night in the hotel so it made sense to book for the restaurant. Lovely place to have your food but unfortunately you can't order much! You had a choice from 3 starters, a carvery is only offered for a main and 3 desserts. When we asked if there was a different menu, the waitress said "if you want a bigger variety go and use the sports bar".... Gee thanks! FYI, this is part of the hotel! So we said that we would give the carvery a miss tonight and we would go to the sports bar. The couple next to us had a carvery and it looked awful and dry. When I asked David, who was running the floor in the sports bar, about the restaurant he said that they served the same thing every day in there! He said that it was a bit ridiculous for people that have a few night's at the hotel. It was all very odd...

Understandable it would be busy, so you’d think extra staff would be assigned to the carvery, but nope just one poor soul trying desperately to carve for everyone in an massive queue. It took AGES to get served which also then meant the veg was all pretty luke warm as it sat there waiting for people to get through the carving wait. The whole meal was pretty poor. It seemed like they just wanted to pack the place to make as much money as possible with the minimum effort.

The service was a little slow - I think that there should be more staff for the volume of customers. Our waitress was lovely but I think that she was so busy with other tables- everything was a bit slow ( ordering drinks, clearing plates, after dinner coffees). There was a very long queue for the main carvery which made it feel like a canteen - the food was good though. I checked with the waitress what food was suitable for my dietary requirements ( I am coeliac and dairy intolerant). I also had a jus instead of the normal gravy and separate tongs in case of cross contamination. I would have loved to have had a dessert- there was a gluten free pecan pie - but it contained dairy ☹️ I could have had the fruit salad, but decided against it.

She then returned with a colleague holding cooking stones a quick hussle to clear some room was needed. Now this was never explained when ordered if it had been they would never had ordered it . The bride's steak arrived after 10 mins someone had to get up to ask for a steak knife . Someone ordered a drink after 10 mins someone had to get up to chase .drink arrive wrong after 10 mins someone had to get up to change it I think you all know how much the table was getting annoyed. Twice the organiser had to speak to the manager who then came back with the usual we are busy excuse and supplied 2 comp bottles of prosecco . Now I have worked in hotels for 15 years and we are all based In a retail / customer care roll. The young lady who served us was given no support from her colleagues or manager as far as I could see . No check back was done at all if this simple thing had been done a lot of the issues would not have escalated to the point it did.

We had lunch today (Sat 9th June) in the Kings Restaurant. It was an 80th birthday lunch, so we’d booked a table and phoned in advance to confirm the booking for an extended family meal. On arrival we were shown to two small tables, the waiting staff said we hadn’t reserved and this was the best they had. There was a quantity of half-eaten food under the tables, which we pointed out and asked the staff to clean up. Disgusting.

We had Sunday lunch the weekend of the 20th May. Really good value for money. The roasts were succulent and delicious. The range of vegetables to many to name. Starters, if you were really hungry could end up being a meal on their own. Vegetarian dishes were nicely prepared and my veggie friend announced the Meditterranean tart was delish.

Beautiful roast beef, moist and tasty. But I must return and try one of the other roasts on offer. Huge selection of serve yourself vegetables made this a very filling and very good value meal. It was full, so don't forget to book! Enjoy!

Visited with friends for a carvery. Place gone downhill ALOT. The restaurant and bar staff look barely out of school and disinterested in their jobs. Basically it's a kids hangout, more like a youth club. I can only imagine they are cheap labour. Old Thorns, up your game and employ mature, capable people and your clients experience may improve!!

Ate here twice during our recent visit to Old Thorns Golf & Hotel and I have to say it was good. A wide choice of salad items to start which changed from day to day. The choice of cooked meats were turkey, gammon and beef (which was nicely pink in the middle). Very good selection of vegetables.

The Kings Carvery at the Old Thorns 4 star Hotel is located in a lovely resort with a golf course and spar. You should book ahead for the delightful Carvery. The carvery is a must for carvery lovers, Your starter could be a range of salad with paste, prawns, eggs. But then the main carvery has a meat selection of turkey, roast beef (rare or well cooked joints) and gammon joint. The French cook will carve you very generous slices of what ever meat you want. Then there are the trimmings including a good variety of cheese paste, vegetables and potatoes like bacon sprouts, cabbage, carrots, parsnips, broccoli, mash potatoes, roast potatoes, pig blankets, all the sauces, etc. Then for dessert there are a selection of profiteroles, cheese cake, a variety of cakes, ice creams with sweet sauces, creams with all the toppings. Obviously, we should have a pint to wash it all down. I am sure after all that you will be content to just need to roll yourselves into your car and back home. Enjoy.

Two couples staying at Old Thorns on a DBB package we enjoyed a two course carvery dinner on Saturday night. A wide ranging buffet salad bar to start with a huge selection and a traditional buffet roast of pork, turkey and beef with all the trimmings and tons of different vegetables. All delicious with a decent service and friendly staff and for that reason I’d recommend the Kings Carvery Brasserie.

Just returned from our first visit to Kings Carvery, impressed with the surroundings service and most of the food, however the parsnips (usually one of the best parts of a roast) were horrid - such a shame as there was a superb selection of vegetables and all the others that we tried were fine?! Come on Kings Carvery - look up how to make yummy parsnips please!

I have eaten here on a number of occasions and always experienced excellent service. Unfortunately the last time I visited here the waitress was extremely rude, my daughter had arranged for a bottle of prosseco to be waiting on the table, which she had pre-paid. The waitress brought the prosseco saying ‘there’s your prosseco ‘ no greeting whatsoever, she then spilt some prosseco on the table with no apology and didn’t offer to clean it up, another waitress offered to do so. During our meal the waitress made no appearance. Our feeling was that we had inconvenienced her, she made no effort to be friendly or helpful, she very obviously could smile as we saw her messing around and joking with another male member of staff. On paying for our meal we had been charged for the pre-paid prosseco, when we questioned our waitress she became argumentative and defensive, a senior member of staff intervened and apologised.

I travel most weeks and stay in 2 or 3 hotels every week. This was the best breakfast I have had in a long time. Self Service buffet. sitting in this excellent environment was calming and peaceful. the scrambled egg was perfect, not the usual overcooked and watery offer, the bacon was cooked well not just warmed up and soggy.

This is a fantastic venue for weddings golf spa , true luxury. But I must say this is one of my favourite carvery’s. For those special birthdays anniversary’s or anything you want to celebrate or just a Sunday treat , this is the place to go. Large party’s should book in advance , but the food is amazing., my wish they had bigger plate.

We were going to the pub down the lane for dinner but we decided to ‘have a look’ at The Carvery. It was fantastic. Beef, gammon & turkey, carved to order (and yes we had all 3), beautifully cooked vegetables, slight crunch just as I like and a whole array of accompaniments from cocktail sausages, stuffing etc. I did not have a Yorkshire pudding but my hubby did. He asked me to try it as it tasted slightly perculiar, neither of us enjoyed the taste nor consistency. However it was a truly delicious meal, good value for money with a young lad serving us politely. Would definitely recommend.

We ate here as part of a spa package, and there was a vast array of choice for the evening carvery. Three choices of meat served by a French chef, several types of potatoes and lots of veg. There was a good choice of puddings too - with ice cream and sprinkles to add. The dining room is well set out, it's large but there are button back banquettes so you are hidden from other diners and it feels cosy.

What shocking service for such lovely food. The food was perfect. The service was non-existent, we had to ask to have our starter plates removed, we had to ask twice/three times for jugs of water. No one asked if we were enjoying our meal, if we wanted more drinks, and when the young lady came through carrying coffee asking if we had ordered coffee, and we replied no but we want to order, no one came back and after waiting we found someone to get the bill for us...... would we go back? doubtful, a meal out is all about the package that includes service!!!!

Had dinner and breakfast while staying at the hotel. Choice from the carvery for our evening meal was good overall and to a very good standard with the one exception of the sausages, which were over cooked, but in the ground scheme of things this did not spoil our meal. After our meal we had desert, again what we had tasted nice but if you didn’t want cake or ice cream you were out of luck. No puddings were on offer. With regards to breakfast again the sausages were over cooked and didn’t taste very nice, apart from that the rest tasted okay but nothing special.

Booked a table online, taking a chance on a place to eat we had not eaten before. My wife and I were with another couple and had the following from the menu: Starters; 2x Ham Hock & Cheddar Croquette, Mustard Mayo. 1x Cajun Tiger Prawns, Asian Sauce, Mixed Leaves. 1x Nachos – Sour Cream, Guacamole, Salsa. Mains; 2x Slow Cooked Rack of Ribs, House Made Barbeque Sauce, Fries, Coleslaw (1x half & 1x full) 1x Quesadilla, Toasted Tortilla Wrap with Melted Cheddar, Onion and Peppers, with added Cajun Chicken 1x Cooked Venison Haunch Steak, Chive Mash, Seasonal Vegetables, Port Reduction, Berry Jus. The food was outstanding, all of our food pierced at the table hot and freshly cooked, flavour of all the dishes was fantastic. I had the venison dish and it was exquisite. Staff were very friendly and helpful, with table service and a good knowledge of the menu. We would all definitely return to this pub/restaurant. Food and drinks were reasonably priced.

The good: The staff are truly amazing. For young staff, they were really attentive and happy to help. The setting is also beautiful, lots of parking and you also have the ability to have a private room for functions. The Prawn cocktail was really lovely, decent size and tasty. Please see the ugly for the bread. The bad: Mix up in orders (even though we had to do a preorder). Food also not available despite doing a preorder! The ugly: Children's starters. Carrot and pepper crudités. No peppers, carrots cooked?! Who serves cooked carrot sticks as a crudité?! Bread. Stale. Must have been cut in the morning and left on the side. This was served with the soup and prawn cocktail. Fish and chips. Fish burnt and small size. Definitely not worth £17. "Triple cooked chips". Definitely not. Some were served cold, not what you'd expect if they were straight out the fryer. Steak. Grisly. Small. Underwhelming. Chicken. Served partially raw. This was refunded in full and starter given for free in fairness. Chocolate brownie. Extremely dark chocolate and crumbly. Not the texture you'd expect for a brownie. I would describe the entire meal as barely adequate. They are advertising their Christmas menu currently. If it carries on like that I genuinely think your Christmas would be ruined! Either that or they half the price of everything as you are paying top whack price for mediocre food. We should have known something wasn't quite right when there were only a few tables at the pub, for a Friday night! I hope it picks up and gets better as it would be such a shame to see the place go. As I said before, the location and staff are great but the chef needs letting go!

Tried to have lunch here today. It was lunchtime and with the relatively small choice of meals and snacks available, (breakfast stops at 11:30am) it would have been reasonable to assume that demand could be met. Wrong! With only three quarters of tables occupied, my first choice of meal was unavailable due to a lack of potatoes. So, having had to choose another dish, twenty minutes passed before being informed that an ingredient for that was missing. I found this unacceptable and left having been refunded for the inconvenience of having to put up with such shoddy service. I was not the only complainant and something needs doing to improve service in this establishment.

Staff did their best but the wait was long and when it arrived it was cold and very poor. Been sitting around for awhile so was dried up. Staff did offer replacement but was past it by then. We had 4 tapas plates and it was only the kofta that was worth eating. Very disappointed
