Kings Arms in South Oxfordshire

Lunch on a grey Thursday. Not very full, which was a pity, but the food we ordered, liver and bacon and a sausage and white beans casserole, was quickly served and both were delicious. The sticky toffee pudding was equally light and lovely. This was the first time we had visited for a long time but we’ll be back. Good home cooked food at reasonable prices is a rarity but it exists here.

Excellent excellent. Greater with a warm and welcoming attitude and atmosphere, service first class the right amount of banter with professionalism. Food service spot on, with the food being first class, quality produce, presented in a fashion that made you feel we were at a London central restaurant. Beer, refreshing, that’s what is required Atmosphere, ambience and furnishings spot on. Don’t let the out side of the building put you off, it’s been around I would say when we used a quill let alone a pen 😂 Ample parking, great garden area, staff are friendly, helpful and a pleasure to talk with. A gem of a pub, would go back, would thoroughly recommend

Great place! For mains the chicken schnitzel and the beef burger are excellent! A decent variety of beers and desserts to die for. The atmosphere is great and the staff really friendly! Highly recommended!

An extremely enjoyable evening, eating out in the garden. The food and service was absolutely excellent. Without a doubt, the best in the area.

Food poisoning We have eaten and drank here regularly and spent a lot of money over the last 6 months as a couple. My partner ate a burger here on the bank holiday Monday and three hours after eating suffered severe sickness and diarrhoea which was definitely a result of the food as he had been feeling quite well beforehand and not eaten anything previous to this. I went in afterwards to have a discreet word with the owner and felt dismissed as a result of this as she did not acknowledge my concerns or offered any compensation to us as would be expected. I now feel saddened by this experience and therefore won’t be going back now.

I ordered the Chicken Shnitzel. It was beyond tasty ! It was Sublime .. cooked to perfection. Oozing with garlic and butter, tender, succulent chicken and crispy Crumb, a side of new potatoes finished and sautéed in butter with a Mediterranean side salad. I've had it twice now and it was cooked exactly the same both times and equally as delicious both times. This pub is my favourite and the winter menu is on another top level !

Very enjoyable lunch in the beautiful, well-cared for pub-garden, which looks out over the countryside. We spoke with two members of staff; they could not have been more pleasant and friendly. This pub is the perfect place to visit for a good meal (generous portions!) and a refreshing cold beer on a hot summer's day.

It was a hot day and there was no better place to enjoy a pint in the sun than that beer garden. Good beer, friendly staff, amazing beer garden.

We arrived towards the end of food service on a Friday night, without having booked. The service was excellent, food (chicken souvlaki and burgers) was great, and there was a nice friendly atmosphere.

Risotto absolutely gorgeous. Son had scampi. 1st time visit - will most certainly return soon! Lovely atmosphere as very busy. Staff were friendly.

Another excellent lunch at the Kings arms. Dog friendly. The food was excellent at a reasonable price and the staff were brilliant. If you want a traditional English pub, this is our go to place. Consistently brilliant.

This used to be an excellent venue with very good cooking. But our visit last week demonstrated that it seems to have joined the ranks of the many pubs serving fairly pricey, unremarkable food. The chicken schnitzel, £17, although soft in the middle, was overcooked and quite tough; the accompanying kale was miniscule and cold. The scampi, £16.50, was accompanied by a pile of overcooked chips. We forwent a sweet course as they were £9 each for the usual crumble, brownie, cheesecake etc. I do not mind paying for excellent cooking, but I thought that our meals were fairly mediocre for the prices charged. However, the staff were very welcoming attentive and friendly and the service was good. Perhaps it was just a bad night.

Lovely venue but food is not good. Went for a Sunday roast - no roast potatoes and the meat was super tough. We arrived and the place was empty which is probably a reflection on the food. Many better places for lunch in the area

Our recent Sunday lunch at the KA was epic: as well as great food, little common sense touches like and extra gravy jug with your meal as standard. Saves you and the staff the hassle of ordering extra, 'cos you're gonna need it anyway. Antonia and Chris are great hosts!

Visited on a lovely summer evening with friends and what a lovely setting, staff good and wheelchair friendly inside & out in pub gardens of which overlook the Millennium Green with many apple trees etc. The meals we ordered was thoroughly enjoyed plus the desserts hence along with good company a good evening was had by us.

Family wedding reception (120-plus) superbly catered - excellent facilities and service. Highly recommended.

We popped in here on the off-chance for some Sunday Lunch......and I'm so glad web did. A beautiful pub...cosy and inviting... And then there's the garden.....beautiful landscaping..lots of tables in the sunshine...and parasols for those that needed shade.. But the food...was the best. I had the Pork belly with Yorkshire puddings and all the trimmings.. My family had the chicken supreme...in tarragon gravy. Everything was delicious....and the service was perfect. I would recommend that everyone comes to try this... We'll certainly be coming again.

Went here with family for lunch and we all decided on the sardines! A great choice, fresh and delicious! Drinks were also great and at a reasonable price . Staff were very nice too, we will be back! Thank you

Lovely old pub with huge garden. Food extremely disappointing. Ordered chicken Caesar and when we apologetically suggested we’d misordered when a tiny green salad arrived we were told by lady manager that it didn’t come with chicken and we must have misread ‘croutons’ for ‘chicken’-...

Our experience wasn’t a good one... food was dreadful, family had pizzas, not worth the money very powdery and abrupt staff. Dirty punters among the eating area constantly walking through. We came for the village summer fete thing, nothing for kids really, there is only so much eating and drinking you can do in a day. stayed for the Frankie valley tribute band, very good, but come the evening couldn’t really see them. Doubt we would return again.

A group of 30 people sat down for the Christmas menu on Saturday night. All meals had been pre-ordered, paid for in full and a 10% service charge had to be paid at the time of the booking. After sitting down at our booked time it took some 25-30 minutes for the starters to be brought out. The group then waited for at least another 40 minutes for the first of the main courses to be produced, quite a few were found to be cold and had to be re-heated. We were one of the last people to be served and we were told that the pork we had ordered was no longer available. We asked to speak to the manager on duty, who kind of apologised and his explanation was that some of our group had taken pork rather than the turkey they had ordered. He seemed to be quite happy with this explanation, making the error out to be our group's fault. However, as all the meat dishes arrived with the same vegetables, trimmings and completely covered in the same very salty, thick, dark gravy, it was almost impossible to tell what meat was on the plate by looking at it. The only obvious difference was that the beef came with a Yorkshire pudding. (Surely gravy should be served separately as not everybody likes gravy on their meal). We were, therefore, reliant on the staff telling us what they handing out and at least two of our party were told their meal was turkey but on tasting both meals were actually pork. We were eventually given a main meal, but without any potatoes. By this time nearly everyone else had finished and we decided that a further complaint would not achieve anything, apart from further upsetting our organiser. To complete a "wonderful meal" we then had to contend with a still frozen cheesecake which we bravely chipped away at. Overall the whole meal took over 3 hours and was memorable for all the wrong reasons. We hope that the service charge goes only to the serving staff as they did their best under very difficult circumstances. However, the management and kitchen staff should be very embarrassed by the time taken, presentation and temperature of the food. We have never been to a restaurant where we have been asked to pay for the service charge before having the meal, perhaps this should have been a clue. It would seem that the restaurant cannot handle a large party and, therefore, should not accept bookings of this size. Needless to say we will not be returning.

With a group of people for the Christmas menu last night. Starter was ok. Main meals came out at different times so my wife had finished before I'd even started. Roast dinner was lukewarm at best (some were stone cold) with dry potatoes , very salty gravy and almost no vegetables ( 2 small sprouts). Cheesecake dessert was still frozen and so inedible ! Overall a very, very poor dining experience.

My wife and I had enjoyed a nice meal at the Kings Arms about a month ago, but last night with a Christmas group booking for about 30 of us it was a different story. Others who had roast beef or turkey found the meal cold, or at least just warm - one was sent back for reheating! Meals arrived at different times, so one of our friends had finished her meal before he husband got his. Another of our friends did not get the Pork meal he had ordered and had to make do with something else. My own main course was Cheese Wellington and I had to first chisel in through the very solid crust , whereupon i found the merest hint of cheese but none i could really identify - it tasted slightly of cheese. There seemed to be a general lack of green veg, and though my wife did had sprouts they were apparently very anaemic looking and overdone, and why does the roast beef come with a sausage?. Dessert wasn't much better, and some had opted to share cheesecake, which was quite large and rather luridly presented, but unforgivably, still frozen. In the British spirit of not making a fuss (we didn't want to upset the person who had booked this meal) most just gradually chipped away at their cheesecakes as they defrosted. Apparently, my wife said, it was not really a cheesecake as we know them. I was lucky I hadn't opted to share my Xmas pudding dessert as it would then have amounted to about one mouthful each, though it wasn't too bad though. I'm sure the waiting staff did their best and hopefully, as i believe we had pre-paid a tip, they did actually get this, but the management and kitchen staff should be ashamed. Basically if you cant cope with a large party then don't accept the booking. We wont be returning.

We had a booking for 12 people on Saturday night and have to say we left very disappointed by the food and service.

Five of us had Christmas lunch here yesterday, and I've got to say that we were treated like Royalty. The staff were friendly and very keen to ensure we had a pleasant experience. Our table was decorated nicely with a small Christmas tree, baubles and crackers, and while we enjoyed a drink complimentary olives, breadsticks and dip were served. All of our food was delicious, very generously portioned, and there was more than a hint of refinement particularly in the presentation of the puddings. We lingered over our food for more than two hours, and the staff were happy to let us enjoy the meal at our own pace. Thank you, Kings Arms.

Great pub with good ale, good food and the landlord goes the extra mile to organise events a great English pub in a great setting.

Great evening for all the family, bonfire fireworks and dressing up competition, the food was great aswell.

First time there, early on a Friday night for a drink pre dinner with local friends. Very well staffed, unusual for local pubs, and very friendly, happy team. Good beers incl the local Harvey's. Pub showing classic signs of a leasehold pub (assume it is, don't know to be sure) where the maintenance is kept to the bare minimum. Large eating areas but only a small bar area.

We were on a trip to East Sussex last week and happened to pop into the Kings Arms for Sunday Lunch. My wife ordered the the chicken Sunday roast whilst I had the beef, she remarked it was the best Sunday roast she had ever had eating out and gave it 10 out of 10. My beef roast was equally as good plus the staff were very helpful and pleasant and it is a very much a warm pub full of character. Also noticed it has a large garden that looks good on a hot summers day.

Great range of drinks, civil staff, well-prepared food. Varied places to sit with country views outside (steps) and cosy inside in winter (tables near the bar are most congenial). Sited on very tight corner but extensive patrons' parking alongside.

I went with a friend for lunch it has a huge garden area which was perfect to sit out on a beautiful day.

We may be biased with The King's Arms being just 200m from our door but we are very lucky to have it. The pub is both comfortable inside with a fantastic beer garden. There is a petanque piste, giant chess, out dor pizza ovens, BBQs and a short stroll to pigs, chickens and an orchard. They host a variety of excellent events throughout the year including mini-festivals, outdoor theatres, quizzes and much more. There is a great choice of beers and the food is good. For those with young children the beer garden is absolutely perfect.

This is our favorite pub when we are in the U K. The staff the service and the food are all excellent. If your are in the area don't miss the chance to visit this lovely old village pub

Dropped by for dinner and had the chicken salad and there was a lot and a lot of salad. The chicken was buried in the salad and not much chicken just a few shreds. Kinda disappointed, however, the soup was good and the staff were nice.

We had a great day when we visited The Kings Arms in Rotherfield. They regular have events on Sundays which offers great food, real ales, entertainment and fun for all the Family.

Great pub! Staff friendly. Good food. Great beer. Sunday nights are a blast with their excellent quiz night run by the barman, Dan Glass!

Was very disappointed with service and meal, we waited over an hour for our food and when it did arrive it was over cooked and barely warm.

We have reviewed the Kings before and as previously the food was excellent, the staff helpful and friendly and all at a very reasonable price. Don't miss this gem in the quaint village of Rotherfield you will not be disappointed.

Sadly I feel compelled to write a review because a nice night out with my parents was ruined by one of the worst eating experiences I've ever had. Firstly, let me say the good points: the staff are nice and friendly, the pub is quaint and welcoming and the drinks are fine. Having been here before we noticed they had a pizza oven outside so we thought it was novel enough to enquire about and we were told that they make fresh pizzas and we were given a leaflet which spoke about "00 flour" etc, so it sounded like they knew what they were doing and we decided we had to try. Tonight was the night and unfortunately I can only describe the pizzas as disgusting. As soon as I saw them arrive I realised there was a problem because these had clearly been cooked in a tray - having eaten at many very good pizza places in Italy and London I have never had them cook the pizza in a tray, consequently the crust looked very crispy and it turned out to be far too crunchy! The whole pizza looked rather unappetising and the toppings looked like a mess - it was as if Jackson Pollock had been handed the ingredients and threw them at the base! We were given standard knives rather than pizza knives, which is fair enough but to my horror I found that the pizza base was also crispy - a bit like a tortilla but not as easy to break! I have never eaten a pizza before which has been completely crispy! To make matters worse the toppings did not taste good at all and the whole experience was incredibly disappointing and we were left in shock that any establishment could happily serve something so foul. My Dad left most of his pizza on the plate. My mum and I left about a quarter. In a good establishment this would have alerted the management that something was not right but sadly in a lot of places these days the establishments have little pride in what they are doing or in caring about their customers. The waitress kindly asked if we wanted to take the remaining pieces away with us but we eagerly said we did not!

I live about 97 steps away & frequently go for a meal or a pint. Always brilliant. Great real ale choices. Proper local.

Visited for lunch on a quiet Monday just after the ‘beast from the east’. Very impressed with the variety of the menu and the quality of the food, especially considering they had no running water due to a burst water main. As a vegetarian I was particularly please to see 3 good options and some dishes I hadn’t seen before. Well worth a visit.

Have been here a few times over the busy Christmas period and other times. Lovely meal always. Service good.

My partner and I fancied a late lunch on a Sunday about 3pm and were driving past the pub when we saw the sign for fresh pizza from a stone oven so thought we would chance our luck. We were really pleased to discover that we could still have pizza on a Sunday during Sunday Lunch service and that there was space in the restaurant to sit. We got a choice of 5 toppings from a fairly extensive array and all for £10. We did have to wait a little while given it was Sunday, but it was definitely worth the wait! Both our pizzas were delicious and a good size, fresh and hot from the oven in the garden. The bar staff said that pizzas are available whenever the pub is (12-9pm) and I wouldn't hesitate to have one again.

7 of us this month to sample the delights of this well established hostlery. As always the table was booked and prepared for us. Jugs of water were supplied. On arrival we were greeted and given the menu. After about 5 minutes later our order was taken. In about 15/20 mins our meals were served. All the meals looked great, I struggled with what to choose as there were so many dishes I liked. I settled for the fish pie which was hot and with plenty of mixed fish. The mash with cheese topping went well with it too. The pie was also served with seasonal veg cooked to perfection with just a slight bite.. Everyone thought what they had was excellent and seven empty plates were returned. The pork loin, liver and 5 bean curry looked super too. I order a sparkling water which was £1.00 cheaper than last months pub choice coming in at £2.50. Service was good with the waiters asking if we were all ok or needed anything. All in all a very successful lunch and I am sure we will be back. We all paid individually which was no problem. I had dined here a couple of times as a pair previously and found the food to be as good in the past as now. The premises have a rustic feel but clean and smart. It has a large car park with further parking down the road a little.

Went for a meal with a group of friends. I had a roast beef version of a Christmas dinner which was very good, loved the crispy potatoes, was less impressed with the cheesecake which was a little bland.

The pub is a mock Tudor style building with an almost historical time travelers feel the inside is dark beamed and log fired warmed feel with just the right amount of modern day a table was booked for 6people with no problems for dinner the staff and management made us feel very welcome our orders for drinks and meal were taken with friendly banter and officiency the food was absolutely fabulous hot and timely delivered to the table the menu varied and the chef happy to accommodate individual needs they have excellent carpark outside eating areas with large play area for the kids to let loose. They can although do marquee functions in the gardens. If you are in Rotherfield then go to the king's arms

Have eaten here a few times over the years and have always been underwhelmed. Today, however, I had the BEST chicken tarragon dish I have ever tasted. Very friendly staff and they have clearly employed a FABULOUS chef! Will definitely return!

Had a brilliant evening trying six different gins and tonics, each chosen to demonstrate the history of gin and each accompanied by a selected dish to complement the drinks. Very interesting and enjoyable and excellent value. The Kings Arms is a great pub anyway and this evening just cemented my already very favourable opinion of it.

We are in the middle of a move to Rotherfield and we visited the pub to see what it was like. We were delighted to find it doggie friendly as well as human friendly ! The staff were really nice which makes a massive difference in any pub / restaurant . We ordered two fish and chips which were very good. We didn't see the menu until afterwards when ordering dessert as we knew what we wanted. The meal was really a decent size with plenty of chips ( which I find more and more pubs skimping on) and the fish portion good too. I had bannoffee pie which tasted homemade and was delicious . The locals drinking there seemed very friendly and welcoming .We look forward to going back .

Had a stunning Sunday lunch at the Kings Arms, excellent portion size, well cooked beef, fresh vegetables and lovely crispy roast potatoes. Attentive service, just everything anyone could want for a Sunday lunch. Absolutely recommended.

The menu is a bit limited but contains all the normal pub choices. Good is well cooked but I think a more inventive menu would be better for this brigade. Front of house were all excellent

but the salad was good and the service was quick. Unfortunately the pub lacks interesting outside areas. Either one sits on a road junction or in a field.

Tuvimos un almuerzo familiar para el Día del padre. La variedad del menú era muy bueno, con mucha variedad y buena relación calidad-precio. Comimos fuera en el jardín amplio y pasamos una tarde relajante. El pub estaba lleno de gente y se olvidaron de nuestra vajilla. Sin embargo, sin duda volvería otra vez.

Gran pueblo amable boozer, muy bien dirigido por Chris y su esposa. Vino un poco caro, pero la comida es excepcional y buena relación calidad-precio! Probablemente nos tomamos (en general) de 2 botellas de vino antes y durante la comida, y el total de 3 platos. La factura estaba bajo de 100 libras, y por la calidad de la comida, no tuve ningún problema pagar eso.

Venía con 3 pequeños en el fin de semana. La zona exterior es genial con un hoyo de arena (zona de petanca pero nadie estaba petanca, ING, así que todo bien) y piggies pollos poco, genial para los pequeños corriendo. El personal es encantador, el lugar es muy amable con los niños y la comida también era genial.

This is a very quaint place to stop for a coffee. The coffee and walnut cake was amazing. It took a little time to arrive but it was definitely worth waiting for. We spent a very pleasant hour just sitting and talking. Recommended.

Somos una familia de 5. La comida era excelente, asadas era delicioso y hamburguesas eran deliciosos, aunque la presentación de la comida de los niños podría haber sido mejor, pero eso es muy delicado, ya que a los niños no les importa en absoluto! !

Nos dieron comida fría cuando comimos allí. Tomaron la comida volver a calentar, e incluso entonces sólo fue un poco más caliente! Pensarías que volvería caliente después de una queja!

Visitamos aquí con mi familia para el día de la madre. No reservamos hasta ese día, pero se las arreglaron para poder acomodarnos. El asado estaba delicioso. No tuve desierto pero el resto de mi familia me aseguró que también estaban muy sabrosos. El menú de ginebra fue fenomenal. El servicio era muy lento, pero fue probablemente porque estaban muy ocupados. El único inconveniente era que estábamos sentados en la parte delantera del pub en la zona del bar y el idioma de algunas de las personas de pie en el bar era bastante chocante, especialmente porque había niños pequeños con nosotros. Sin duda visitar de nuevo pero asegurarse de que teníamos una mesa en el restaurante.

Reservamos una mesa, tuvimos que esperar más de 20 minutos antes de que nos trajo un menú y tuvimos que pedir eso. Fue una hora de llegada hasta salimos entrantes. Más de 2 horas desde la llegada hasta nuestros platos principales llegaron. Tuve houmous con mi entrante - este era muy sosa y no tenía sabor. Los gustos del propio lidl houmous mejor! Cuando tuvimos nuestra orden tomado nos dijeron que lo sentían pero que estamos teniendo para escalonar los pedidos ya que vinieron todos al mismo tiempo. . Tal vez si ellos nos avisaron que sería un retraso ya otras mesas estaban llenos al mismo tiempo, me han cambiado la hora de nuestra reserva. El personal era bastante agradable, la presentación de la comida era buena, el lugar estaba limpio, pero yo no estaba impresionado con la larga espera y la comida estaba bien, pero no genial.

The perfect venue for one of our pub favourites, steak and chips. Tender and flavoursome steak, chips were chips. Excellent starters. Check prices before ordering wine.

Fuimos a este restaurante por primera vez esta semana y sin duda regresaremos. Cada miembro del personal que nos encontramos era muy acogedor y servicial, y era fácil de averiguar sobre que platos contiene gluten. Me trajeron un menú separado indicando todos los platos que podía comer y explicó cómo otros podrían adaptarse. Elegimos la opción tanto de cordero que fue cocinado en una salsa de hongos y crema agria y fue absolutamente deliciosa!

Good friendly bar staff in a lovely old pub, full of atmosphere and many locals having a drink or two. The menu is interesting and not too long, which indicates they have a proper chef, and the thrice cooked chips, clearly home made, were superb.

I went here for lunch with my family. Absolutely amazing food with brilliant service. Highly recommended. A massive thumbs up from me!!

We were highly recommend to this lovely old pub. Food was superb, extremely good menu with varied choice. Service was most attentive and very friendly. Our first visit, it won't be our last, thoroughly enjoyable.

Excellent evening, different gins matched with a sample menu. This was a well run themed evening, the staff were very knowledgeable and friendly. The accompanying food was amazing and well matched. Good value.

Nos han escrito acerca de los Reyes antes y sigue siendo mejor y mejor.

Came to the pub as a lunch break from my Challenge Walk, drinks were served very well, the outside was nice. Nice rest stop.

I came here for lunch with my 82-year-old mother (who has dementia), her cousin and my aged Labrador. The staff were so warm and welcoming, and the food was delicious. We then went to the Stanley Spencer gallery which was almost right next door. A lovely day's outing - and most of it thanks to the lovely staff at the King's Arms, who went out of their way to be helpful and accommodating. Thank you so much!

We arrived for Sunday lunch as I had been meaning to get to this place having signed up to their Email news letter about events, Sunday roasts, birthdays,Christmas etc etc.

Four of us cyclists arrived for lunch on 7 June. Fortunately the weather was great, so we could sit at a table on the patio, overlooking the green space that the pub is lucky to use. We would have been just as happy to sit indoors. This pub has a really nice cosy feel to it. But the best bit must be the food! One of us had the plentiful Sunday roast (beef). The rest of us ordered off the blackboard 'specials' and golly we were not disappointed! If you decide to eat at The Kings Arms I hope you enjoy the experience as much as we did.

There is no such place near Henley on Thames!Someone has confused Rotherfield Greys with the Rotherfield near Tunbridge Wells.The clue is in the postcode!
