On the 2nd April myself and my wife arrived for a birthday dinner. No booking could be made as they take walk in's only. We got there at 1pm to be told there was only 2 big tables free and they could not accomodate us. There was a couple in front and 7 more customers behind. We was all told under no circumstances were we going to be served. One couple even said they had been let down by a previous pub, But the waitress was having none of it. She told us to go away [not even a sorry come back in an hour or sit at bar and wait]. We have eaten here before and always had a great time as they are dog friendly. It seems since the online booking has been taken away the service has gone downhill. We will not be going back

We had a nice time in the park and beforehand I checked places for having dinner. So, it was proper choice! Everything was excellent: service, food (we got three different meals) baked stilton haddock, pie and risotto . I’m always very demanding of food, but I was very impressed by taste of my risotto , other dishes were very tasty too. Highly recommend it !

Stayed at Hever castle who recommended this pub as within a short walking distance, Great service and food although menu was limited there were some good options to choose from. Food was nicely presented and hot and even extra gravy served without being requested. Staff friendly and a nice ambience with gentle background music. Kitchen only serves food from 5.30-8pm which left a few disappointed customers who wished to eat before or after this time. If in the area would definitely recommend you give it a try.

Amazing History lesson to be learnt here for sure. We came here as we had Canadian friends that wished to visit. Don't be fooled by Google and the Knowledge that it tells. There are many secrets that this place holds, there is a History Teacher who works behind the bar, the wealth of Knowledge she knows is definitely worth while asking her about, from the brinks robbery to the actual History of the Castle.. be sure to ask for the History Teacher, you won't be disappointed. The food we didn't try, but definitely looked and smelt delicious. 10 star service from the History Teacher, keep up sharing the wealth, Hopefully one day the gold will come up.

Fantastic food and drinks, a super friendly team, and an amazingly unique atmosphere that all history buffs will adore. After our day at Hever Castle, we walked (the very short distance) to King Henry VIII pub. We loved our meal and drinks. We arrived a little before the kitchen opened, but we were invited to wait at a table with drinks in the meantime. We were very lucky to meet one of the pub’s incredibly friendly team members who was more than happy to share the various differences between their various ales. She helped explain a bit of the history of the ales and the pub. We loved our visit. We will definitely return again one day!

Great pub. Nice old aesthetic that fits well with Hever Castle. Food is very tasty and staff are good as well. It's quite expensive - on average about £18 for a main which brings it down a star but the food and atmosphere does make it great. Worth visiting if you're staying at Hever, although access isn't great from castle (you have to walk on the road) and it closes quite early (8pm on the website).

We arrived as a group of 6 on Sunday 12th Nov around 1pm. I'd tried to call a couple of times earlier in the week to ask about reservations with deposits as we were a larger group coming from Bexhill- a long way to travel to find you can't be accommodated and we weren't willing to book an alternative pub as a failsafe and then let them down at the last moment - however they were engaged each time. It was my birthday so I was a bit apprehensive about whether we would get to eat! We met a lady who said we would have a bit of a wait but she would find us in the bar when they could fit our group in. We had a couple of drinks in the lovely bar, it's clearly a popular place with local people. We were on our second drinks when a table was laid for us. Starters were excellent, full size camembert and lovely garlic bread. The roast was great, some had beef, some pork and some the beetroot Wellington (which very much exceeded our expectations) and generous portions of veg. Service was friendly, fun and relaxed despite how busy it was, it really made the difference. We really enjoyed both the food and the setting. I would be willing to travel there again for food and drinks, but a discretionary reservation system would be appreciated - and we'd be happy to pay cash deposits - otherwise it's possibly a gamble. I feel if we'd arrived even 30 minutes later that Sunday, we would not have been able to eat as it got extremely busy.

The atmosphere so romantic, with candlelit tables in a beautiful panelled, cosy dining area. The staff were all so friendly and genuinely happy to see us. We enjoyed a 3 course dinner. We eat out regularly and this is the best food we've enjoyed in months. I had the salmon gravalax which was incredible, followed by the steak and red wine pie. My wife loved her hummus starter and her scampi was so fresh and well presented. My dessert was the 'dirty Henry'.Two Belgian waffles topped with caramel, ice cream and flaked chocolate. Went outside to be sick. Still charged me. Avoid. God knows if they put goat in the salad! Avoid.

I used to love this pub. We would go every few months so not that often but each time was brilliant. Well the latest wasn’t great. It must’ve changed hands again or something because the service has gone downhill. We arrived and got a table in the garden. Went to order food but was told they aren’t serving to the tables in the garden but were on the decking area. So we just ordered drink and would order food once we moved. After about 45 mins we moved to the decking area. My dad went in to order the food. He was then told they weren’t serving food to the decking area. Dad said that other tables on the decked area were eating food. Staff said oh they must’ve moved. Dad asked to be sat inside as that seems to be the only area that was serving food. Was then told they were at capacity. We left. It used to be such a lovely place. Found a pub 10mins away that had much better service. Shame really. Doubt I’ll be back.

We did plan to have dessert, as there was homemade banoffee pie, but we were full after our mains ! Really enjoyed our visit to this historic restaurant. There is just one criticism and that was that on every dinner table, doors, walls, in the wash room and in even in the loo, there were QR code stickers telling you to download to leave a tip. It was far too much and felty pushy. Personally we did not download the QR code and were happy to hear they accepted cash tips too.

Visited yesterday for lunch and was very disappointed that the scampi is no longer on the menu. Had fish and chips instead with mushy peas and tartare sauce, as did my dining companions so I cannot comment on the other options. The fish was served on top of the excellent chunky chips but was itself very greasy with thick batter which had not cooked inside so was raw, soggy and most unpleasant. I just ate the fish and left the majority of the batter. The mushy peas were in a very small bowl as was the tartare sauce. The sauce was insufficient for my husband . On the plus side the food was very hot and the few staff on duty were pleasant. My husband had a generous portion of sticky toffee pudding for dessert which he enjoyed. The white chocolate and passion fruit cheesecake was not overly flavoursome but sweet with a rubbery topping. It was redeemed by a coulis and sorbet bursting with flavour and perfect sharpness. There are other pubs serving food within a short drive so I doubt that we will be eating at the King Henry VIII again any time soon. We may just have experienced an "off" day and other food options may have been better but it is not worth the risk in my opinion.

It's not about the money, you need to be upfront with what you are offering, would have rather it cost more to start with!

Beautiful old pub, with a great atmosphere. Beautiful food including vegan options. Brilliant service with a smile, welcoming and couldn't do enough for you. Can't wait to go again while we're in the area.

Fabulous pub with great food and service. Portions were generous and great quality and at a reasonable price. We’ll definitely be coming back. Never seen a steak and ale pie with such fantastic quality beef! Haloumi fries as a starter enough for three people!
