King Haakon in Highland

Pessimo cibo l’odore di olio esausto che si sente e persiste all’ interno del locale disgustoso soprattutto se appena aperto non credo sia normale Non lo consiglio a nessuno..

Just like everyone else in the area, we showed up at 7PM hoping to get dinner. Despite the place being quite crowded they did get us a table even if our table was one of the few with no view of the bay. Oh well. One has to order at the bar and the food is then brought out. We had the chicken and a burger. Both were tasty. Try the deep fried Haggis appetizer, it is excellent. They had good beer on tap servers were pleasant. prices were reasonable. There are not too many places to eat in that area, luckily we found this one.

We came here for dinner when we stayed on the island at the start of February. I ordered our food and straight away something didn't seem right. A group of around 15 tourists came in around 10 minutes after us and when the barman took my order, he wrote it on the same page as a member of the tourist group. I told him I wasn't with them and was told "it's ok, I know that we always put orders in like this". So, I asked how would he know where to bring my order as there was no table numbers, I was told "we just come out and look for you, don't worry we'll find you". Regardless, I showed him where we were sat. Around 30 minutes passed and still no food... we had ordered a starter and 2 mains. The tourist group who came in started to be served their meals and still nothing for us. By this time an hour had passed... no food. We watched the waitress serve a plate of fish and chips to the group who looked confused. They sat with this for around 5 minutes before coming over to us to ask if we had ordered fish and chips, my fiancé said he had, but had asked for it plain. The young girl offered it to him and said all the group had been served and that this was obviously ours. My fiancé refused it as it had been sitting with them for 5 minutes and wasn't correct anyway. Shortly after this, the barmaid started wandering around holding a steak pie. I approached and asked if this was for us, she said yes. I told her to forget it and asked for a refund. No starter brought, wrong mains and appalling service overall. We were given a full refund and left. In total we were there for 90 minutes. It's a disgrace of a bar and the service is shambolic. The staff were pleasant enough, but the nonchalant way of taking orders is not efficient at all.

Abbiamo cenato in questo locale durante un viaggio on the road in Scozia. Incuriositi dall'ampio menù, abbiamo deciso di provare la nostra prima CULLEN SKINK. Una delizia per il palato. Abbiamo altresì preso il famoso fish and chips, il primo della vacanza. Lo staff molto disponibile e gentile. Dal locale c'è una bellissima vista sulla baia e sul ponte che collega la terraferma all'Isola di Skye. Un bellissimo ricordo! Passate di qui se siete nei dintorni, non ve ne pentirete!

We were delighted to find a place that served gluten-free fish and chips and it was one of the best I can remember having. The service was highly efficient; we were seated, we ordered and were served five portions of fish and chips all within 10 minutes.

Came here for lunch after a long drive , very dissatisfied. I had fish and chips and mushy peas at the price at 12.50 pounds. My daughter had macaroni cheese at 10.00 pounds. Both portions were more akin to children’s portions , The fries that accompanied the fish was refried and dried out . My daughters macaroni had a garnish of croutons with no added side to accompany. This place is more akin to fast cafe food at double the prices . The hospitality food service industry in Scotland is very ooor in comparison to other tourist hot spots. There is a general lack of interest in keeping the customers happy and it is devoid of professionalism on all levels. I say that as an expat Scot on holiday here.

We dined as a group of 12 for a celebratory birthday dinner. We were delighted with the warm welcome we received from Kathy and her team with the private area adorned thoughtfully with decorations to mark the occasion. The service was attentive and the food judged by the entire group from young to old as excellent! Unequivocally endorsed as THE stop in Skye if you are looking for a warm welcome and great food.

I very much enjoyed the food, friendly staff and view here. Also generous outside space and rainbows if the weather is right. Extremely wheelchair friendly space, as is the Castle Moil self service cafe next door. Again, staff lovely here too.

Excellent food! But gets very busy, so be prepared to wait. There seems to be only 2 pubs in Kyleakin, so choice is very limited. Wait staff were friendly & location is good.

the King Haakon had amazing food, i was sitting next to these couple (who made a review below me) and i can just say they were extremely rude them complaining about the little things was terrible. you can tell the staff have worked the whole summer and i presume it was very busy. as she said the collegues were 'flirting' with the locals. Shes obviously not aware of people being friendly to other people. The staff were rushed off there feet and did everything they could to help. that other review they were trying to get a discount. The food menu worked for everyone. myself and my wife got langos to share and can i say they were amazing. if you ever go here you should defiantly get them!! The staff were all very friendly and talkative which is good to see. This lady next to me was a nightmare i was relieved when she had left

We went here as the menu online looked really nice and we were looking forward to the offering, it was our wedding anniversary and unfortunately the place we fancied was fully booked our own stupidity not to book so we decided to go down from Portree to Kyle and see what we could find. We finally decided that King Haakon offered a really good and varied menu online it showed seafood platters and good wholesome cooked food. This is where we were wrong, upon arrival we entered the building turned right expecting the restaurant to be open it wasn’t not a problem though as we are not adverse to eating in bars, we found ourself a table went to the bar got menus and drinks ordered, looking at the menu is was nothing like the one online and the specials board was the usual soup of the day, langoustines all the touristy food that you would expect during the season, so we ordered a soup a Cullen skink to start and mussels and a burger for mains, now the atmosphere was to be expected being a Saturday night in a bar filled with locals, but it got to the point that I couldn’t hear my wife unless she was shouting anyway out comes the food, it’s the burger and mussels no sign of the starters a few minutes passed and as I was about to approach the bar here comes our soups, puzzled we said that it was supposed to be starters then mains only to be told that I didn’t specify that when ordering surly if a table of 2 orders 2 soups then 2 “main courses” one would think that oh they must want the soups first? The waitress went away for another few minutes then brought the sides we ordered virtually slamming them down and took off as fast as she came there were no condiments on the table and my wife attempted to ask the waitress she walked away ignoring her completely so my wife followed again as said excuse me ignored again by this time the frustration was showing, the waitress on the other hand was too busy flirting with one of the locals ignoring my wife. Eventually she turned and very rudely snapped aiding what! So my wife asked for salt pepper and condiments all of which were delivered without a word. By this time we had finished our soups and moved on to the main courses, the burger my wife had looked as though it had been cremated either side but was raw in the middle, now I know myself that some people like their burgers medium rare but this burger was that raw that a good vet could have brought it back and with it being delivered before our starters it was stone cold. We were never asked if we wanted the mains to be taken back to the kitchen to keep warm to which we would have gladly accepted, my mussels were tepid but again having not been asked what could we do, trying to get the attention of the waitress was impossible and by this point we were that disheartened that even if fresh hot mains were provided it wouldn’t have mattered, the portion size of my mussels was ludicrous I would have sent a bigger portion as a starter especially for the price £16.50 for a small of what I would have given as a starter is a bit steep. As you can imagine we didn’t stop for dessert, I drank half my pint got the bill and left. It is a real shame that the experience we had goes against so many of the reviews on here as this place is a busy bar and could be busier and offer a nicer atmosphere if only the restaurant was opened and people were given the option where to eat.

Although it was very busy the young lady was very helpful. She said it could be quite a wait but luckily we found a fellow traveller who shared his table. The Soup was amazing Cullen Skink and we had 2 additional travellers join us who also had a good meal. Definitely with a try when going to the Isle of Skye

Good food typical of the area. Definitely recommend, specially for the nice views by the windows to the sea. It might be hard if you are on a diet!

I would describe this place as a spit and sawdust pub. It is very busy and has an excellent atmosphere with a good mixture of friendly locals and tourists. The food is average but reasonably priced and what you would expect from a pub.

As the title states, can't say anything about the food. The bar itself, staff, service and atmosphere were all great.

All other dinner options nearby were fully booked due to coach-parties and all the tables here were full too but a very friendly (I want to say French?) female staff member offered us to sit at the bar until a table opened up. That's how...

We were here with our 2 kids (4 and 6) 2 nights in a row. The food was great. Especially the fish and chips. The staff went above and beyond, especially Erica! She was great to our boys! Would definitely recommend

Popped in here for a tea and and a scone as we were on a coach trip, the tea was fine but the Scone was tiny that two bites from it this would be finished, they were not home made as they would be bigger,...

Came here for a lunch with my husband on a rare break from our toddler. Staff were friendly and service was quick. Food was fresh, portions were good and it was reasonably priced. This place isn't fancy but it's got great views over the water.

Lovely food and nice staff. I had langoustines which were delicious. Would definitely recommend King Haakon for a nice meal, if you're in this area. It wasn't the most characterful of places but it was clean, with a fantastic view and wonderful, fresh, seafood.

Service was 100% spot on. Staff very attentive and friendly. True pub feel and felt welcomed even though we aren’t local. Would definitely recommend to anyone visiting the area

Can’t wait for C19 to be over. We are ready to hit the “go” button as soon as we can and get back to Skye. If you want a real Highland welcome and genuine fun - visit the Castle Moil / King Haakon.

We camped close by, decided to have a couple of drinks, but on looking at the menu decided to eat. Wow! Probably one of the best 'pub meals' we've had for a long time. Would highly recommend the beef chilli and venison burger.

1. for a paint with friends, 2. dinner. Both were excellent. Usually they close quite early though. I'd recommend to get there and go for a tennents ember + fish & chips or smashed potatoes and local-porks sausages.

The haggis and cullen skink were delicious, as was the local Skye beer. Nice to chat to the staffs and the friendly locals

Fabulous fish and chips - highly recommend. Friendly service and a good choice of meals. We returned and tried the mushroom soup which was also delicious.

We were staying at a hostel close by and this restaurant was recommended to us.I am glad we came here, the service and food quality was amazing.Not a big menu to choose from but a good variety. I ordered the chickpea dish and it was delicious.

We happened to stay in Kyleakin for the night - and found this place for supper. The menu is quite small, but everything we had was delicious. The best part was our server (a young man) who was efficient, friendly, funny and an absolute pleasure.

The meals are served after ordering at the counter. This wasn't our first choice for lunch but it was a reasonable backup when another restaurant was not open. We had a party of 7 and no one raved about their meal and no one complained, hence the rating. There was a reasonable selection of items and food was prepared quickly.

Was on an organised coach trip so had no choice but to eat here. Asked for a baked potato filling in a panini to be told 'we don't put seafood on the grill'. First time I have ever heard tuna mayonnaise being described as seafood. Ordered the cullen skink which was at a price premium compared with soup of the day. It was very poor. Watery consistency with a couple of cubes of potato and almost no haddock. Won't be back.

The seafood was good but there was not a huge selection on the menu. I am not a seafood lover so I ordered the pasta with vegetables. It served the purpose but was not somehting I would order again. The views of the water and atmosphere offests the food in ever way.

Visited the King Haakon on our hiking trip around Skye. Great views of the Skye bridge and the Kyle Akin.

Came in after a long cold day expecting nothing more than “passable” pub food at the closest place we could find after a day of hiking. I was happily surprised by one of the best fish suppers I’ve had in Scotland so far. Lovely lightly battered haddock, and did not taste at all of the fryer—very impressed! The peas left a good impression too. The fries were good—nothing to be writing home about, but definitely did the trick. Hubby had sausage and mash. The gravy could have been better, but hey, were not complaining!! Beer was cold and the pub nicely heated. Nice bar staff. Would be happy to return.

Veel restaurants zijn hier in de omgeving dicht op zondag maar vanaf 17:30 is de king haakon wel open met knetter snelle service, aardig personeel een een hele lekkere fish and chips zoals je dat maximaal in een pub kan verwachten. Terwijl jij biertje en je f&c; eet gaat de lokale bevolking uit zijn dak bij de voetbalwedstrijd op tv. Alles simpel alles basis maar ook alles zoals je verwacht bij een pub op deze locatie.

The two of us and our tour guide enjoyed a good lunch here including a hearty soup. It was not fancy but perfect for a rainy day.

This is one of the few places to eat in the area. The food was okay, though overpriced considering how basic the menu was. The service in the bar seemed to be better than the service in the restaurant, though they serve exactly the same food.

Very little atmosphere in dining room. Very plain. Adequate menu featuring sea food and some special dishes. Food was average but nicely served

A very good hearty evening meal plus the staff were very pleasant and friendly. The restaurant was extremely busy but the staff coped very well.

Not too many dinner options in this area with good reviews. Our (terrible) hotel recommended this place and unfortunately we tried it out. The chips were awful, the cheapest frozen kind with zero taste, likewise the burger (which didn't come with the listed bacon, perhaps for the best!) my pulled pork was passable but the prices are absolutely ridiculous for the quality of the food.

Our B&B; was just 50 meters from the pub so it was getting there. Order at the bar and they bring the food to your table. I found the staff very friendly and eager to please. There were six of us and we had the langoustines and the rest had the seafood platter. All were very good! Great beer and wine to go along with it too!

We were staying at The White Heather and wandered down here on the first night. We never went anywhere else. It ticks all my boxes for a great bar. Good range of beer, pool table and juke box plus the food was excellent. Cherries on the cake though were the views towards the bridge combined with the sunsets and the extremely friendly and attentive staff. It's a lively and friendly place and we absolutely loved it.

We stayed in the nearby hotel, which wasn’t very good, so this little pub was a pleasant surprise and we visited 2 nights in a row. The first night we were treated to an amazing sunset view over the sea and the Skye bridge, truly spectacular and the pub seems to be well known for this with many people taking photos. Pack your midge repellent though, those tiny critters mean business..... Staff are friendly and efficient, locals are friendly(!), the food is excellent, just good pub grub with no frills. We had the langoustines and the haddock and chips the first night, the sausage and mash and a chickpea and spinach dish the second, all very good. Special mention to the smoked salmon starter, best ever tasted. Highly recommend this pub if staying in the area.

I was served a dessert that was still frozen and inedible and so returned it - was told to wait for it to defrost and when I said no I was patronised and refused a refund - never again!

The King Haakon was right across the street from our B&B;, so it only made sense to go and check it out. Great selection of ales and scotch, so it made for a nice night. We were able to watch the sunset off the back patio and it was pretty stunning. We were too late for dinner, so we had to eat down the road and come back for the cocktails. Dinner shuts down kind of early, so keep an eye on that.

Me and a few friends visited here one Saturday night whilst staying in Kyleakin. The Haakon is a great lively pub with a wonderful atmosphere and lovely staff. They even had a live band on on our first visit! We have returned many a time and the food is also excellent value for money. Great stuff!

I had the prawn dish, which was good and not too costly.they had good selection of sea food.i would recommend it definitely.

Abbiamo cenato 2 sere di fila in questo pub. I piatti sono ottimi, le birre anche e il prezzo è economico. Ricordatevi che alle 20.30 la cucina chiude, quindi ordinate prima. Ci sono anche i tavinini all aperto..... E noi ne abbiamo approfittato

Siamo stati in questo pub una volta, il cibo è nella media mentre i prezzi sono leggermente sono nella media. L'aspetto positivo è che offre tavoli all'aperto vista mare.

The reviews on this forum have been amazing but sadly we had a bad experience. Maybe because we are vegetarians and the only two veg items on the menu were tasteless and terrible . We had the bruschetta and the linguine in tomato sauce . The bruschetta was strangely deep fried and swimming I oil ; I may not be an Italian Food expert but I do know enough that bruschetta bread is never deep fried !! The pasta was insipid and had no flavour .

The menu is rather limited, but there were several fishy specials on and a couple of veggie options. The Cullen skink was excellent, but the slice of baguette could have been warmed for maximum effect. My seafood platter was excellent - crab, rollmops, prawn and two types of salmon but I could have done with some salad and bread for the salmon pate. Friendly very fast service

Nothing pretentious here. Just good hearty food with a Scottish flavor. A bonus is the waterside position.

Friendly atmosphere, decent food. If you haven't already tried haggis, do it - surprisingly good. Here you can get good one as appetizer with whiskey.

We visited with our 3 Border Collies. They were offered a drink even before we were! The dogs approved of this level of attention! The food was good pub grub and the choice of local beers was great.

Just popped in for a nightcap. Couple of nice chilled stellas and I tried the local Talisker whisky which was brilliant peaty but also a sweetness coming through. I had just come back from Talisker bay after taking some photos. Really great pub

Walked down here from our hotel on good Friday for dinner and drinks. Called to book a table but was told its just first come first served. Which turned out to be great.

Es el típico bar que querrías encontrarte en un pueblito escocés como Kyleakin. Buenos platos a precios económicos (uñas alitas 5£) y la cerveza lo mismo (una pinta 3,50£).

This restaurant is one of the only good ones in this region with a sea view. It is right on the seashore and it does offer seats by the sea.

I went here with friends where burgers, fish and chips, salads and sausages with potatoes were ordered and they all looked amazing! I have never had such a complex and satisfying salad in all of Scotland as I did at this place! It was truly impressive. The portions are huge and reasonably priced and the environment is clean. The employees go above and beyond, are sweet and helpful. We stopped here on our way in and out of Skye. I will be returning to this establishment on my next trip to Scotland and Skye!

Staff really friendly. Had food two nights both nights great. Would suggest go for salmon and oat cakes - the amount of salmon was great, tasted superb and price brilliant.

During a recent stay we ate at the Haakon both nights of our stay. The seafood platter was just simply perfect. We had a lighter meal on another night that was equally well prepared and as tasty.

Stopped here for lunch on our way past, the fish & chips was good and a good portion, plus there's a good choice of beers. The view of the bay is very nice as well
