King Alfred's Head in Vale of White Horse

We stopped here for lunch on our way home from holiday. Service was friendly. We both had the chicken, ham and leek pie with veg and chips. The pie and chips were very nice but the veg was under-cooked, the beans in particular being virtually raw. We were, however, immediately given a reduction on the cost of the meals because of that and it wouldn't put us off visiting again.

Kids menu: Pizza and chips - pizza is very small chips were nice 👎 Sausage chips and beans - sausages are like chip shop ones, would have been good to have seen some proper sausages 👎 Adult - bacon burger was very nice and really well stacked 👍

Beautiful pub. We visited last time for the bbq day and there was a lovely atmosphere. The bbq was very reasonably priced that some of my party orders two mains. The staff were a little overwhelmed but food and drinks were flowing well and they provided a good level of customer service. Very dog friendly and the staff bring water bowls and treats out for the dogs. There's a little ice-cream shop that sells dog ice-cream too.

It's a great local pub. Friendly staff and a great atmosphere. It also has a lovely garden that is great to sit in in the sunshine, it's a real sun trap.

I hired out the function room for a baby shower and I can’t rate King Alfred’s enough. From the planning of the baby shower to the day, King Alfred’s have been brilliant. Super helpful when replying to all of my emails, quick to help with arrangements I wanted for the day and brilliant on the actual day. I’m thrilled with how the afternoon went and that’s thanks to the pub. I would definitely recommend hiring out their function room. Thank you again to the great time, especially Micheal and Masie. You have all been great!

Quite expensive food, OK but not amazing. Not really worth the price. Very slow service due to kitchen delays, but this was a one-off, usually service is quicker. Carvery is quite pricey, but has generous portions of meat and veg.

I used to live in Wantage and the landlord would get a wooden block out so I could get my wheelchair up the front. Back then it was an extremely worthwhile experience as the food! However, I visited today and had a simple drink outside and it was pleasant. No one asked if I wanted to go inside. I will go again and see if it's still accessible and why the food is now like.

Great selection of spirits and lovely food. Dig friendly. Staff are always friendly. Place is always clean. They hold private functions upstairs. My family have had christenings and small weddings there over the years and it's always been amazing. Lovely outdoor seating area for summer too. In summer they also have an icecream parlour which my kids love! The only small thing we all didn't like was the lights in the front room, annoyingly bright. Cool decor though.

Can do, helpful and charming staff.

Popped in for a late lunch with my hubby and my mum. Lovely, friendly staff and the food was tasty and plentiful too. As mum and I were having soup we were offered butter for our bread which mum accepted and as the lady serving felt that the butter was too hard she returned to the kitchen to soften it. This thoughtfulness and the level of attentiveness from both members of staff made this a very enjoyable first visit.

Quite a cosy little pub, with lovely food and service. The staff were very friendly and approachable. We wanted a ‘light bite’ as it was lunch time, but it turns out their portions are HUGE! If we are ever back in Wantage I’d be sure to return, but probably wouldn’t order a side to accompany my ‘light bite’!

The portions here are absolutely amazing. I ordered from “light bites” and got a giant hot dog which is no complaint because it was really good. The price is not too bad but the food is amazing. I recommend.

I had a Friday lunchtime pint of Tribute. It was undrinkable and by the end of the meal had a solid 20mm yeast cake in the bottom. When the waiting staff brought the food they didn't seem to appreciate how bad it was

I've worked in many pubs over the years but I'm seriously impressed with the King Alfreds head for their presence within the community. Not only do they have loyal and consistent regulars, there is always something going on with the community whether it be party's, events for Christmas, Halloween etc or just when there is something happening in the market Square, this is the pub in the town that is involved and at the forefront. It has a very friendly and welcoming atmosphere, the food is good and there's a great range of drinks on offer. A large garden out the back and even a separate ice cream counter next door for summer days. There's a function room available upstairs and the landlord and lady are very friendly, I was on first name terms within a matter of days. This is how pubs should be done.

A really nice pub tucked away in town center. The menu is simple and the food is tasty. The service was really good. The garden outside is really nice and the inside is cozy. Very simple pleasures at this one.

Great pub, spent a few nights out here and the staff and atmosphere has been welcoming and fun. Also booked the upstairs function room for a family event, private bar and an excellent buffet menu at reasonable rates. Worth a visit!

So friendly and reasonably priced. A hidden gem of a garden at the back. The owner is very welcoming and has opened a beautiful little ice cream shop to the side of the pub.

Stopped off because it has dog water out front. Bar staff instantly welcomed us. Menus were easy to find, and clean! Staff were friendly and attentive without looking bored or crabby. Food was fresh, well presented and flvourful. Although, slates not plates. Argh.

Nice friendly staff and accommodated a large group

Popped in for some lunch with a friend who I haven't seen in years and was disappointed. The fish was grey and the tartar sauce was clearly old and out of date. When I mentioned to the staff that it was bad the lady rudely asked what I wanted to do, so I asked for a refund and with no apology refunded me and walked off behind the bar. Avoid at all cost. A real shame, clearly the chef can't make a sandwich.

Dam. That was a good feed and a really good price.

We had our work do here recently and it was amazing. The staff couldn't have been more helpful and friendly and we were reallly well looked after. The food was good too and all in all we had a lovely time. Would definitely recommend+++++++

We had our angling club Xmas dinner at this pub at the weekend, the veg was just about OK but the meat having been under the heat lamps for so long was dry and tough. Definitely not worth the £15.50 price tag for 1 course.

Light lunch with my wife a few days ago. Very friendly and accommodating service with a smile. My dog ( Billy ) was fussed over with treats and water by the staff. Will be coming back !

Thank you so much to the wonderful staff at The King Alfred’s Head for making our son’s christening party such a special day. We hired the function room and had a buffet. The room was set up nicely when we arrived and the bar was well-stocked. The food was delicious and had been freshly prepared. Our guests commented on the quality of the food and how delicious it was. Every member of staff we dealt with was friendly, helpful and efficient - with a couple of members going above and beyond (helping to carry buggies up the stairs to the room and tracking down a couple of items for us). Ebony and Maya were extremely friendly and efficient behind the bar, serving everyone with a smile and ensuring that we had everything we needed. The cost of hiring the function rooms and the buffet was extremely good value for money. Thank you again for making sure the day was special and ran smoothly.

We ate twice in King Alfred's during our stay in Wantage. Ryan served us and he was SUPER helpful, friendly and attentive... all the staff were. Our meals were very tasty and presented well.

Consistently lovely. The staff are always accommodating despite our penchant for turning up without having booked. We have been served by Maisey twice now, who is always friendly and attentive. Beers are served as they should be, and the food has always been great. The menu has plenty of familiar favourites but also several novel dishes to keep it interesting.

Very nice pub. Large outdoor space. Very delicious food. Good variety of beer.

They cater for children, dogs, young and old (like me) and they do an amazing Carvery on a Sunday! It used to be 'My Local.Haunt' 20 plus years ago and is now once again the best place to be in town 😊😊😊😊😊

Hi, don’t usually do this sort of thing, but just had to just say how charming and pleasant your front of house guy is. (Think his name was Ryan. Baseball cap) was very accommodating to my needs and made me feel very special all night :) what a man. 🥰

Haven't been back to Wantage for ten years so wasn't sure where to go for lunch. Saw that "The Alfreds" now did food so thought we'd give it a go. Great choice.Food all very good and a good selection of beers. Particularly enjoyed the whitebait which we shared as a starter.

Polish manager extremely rude and this place has unfortunately become known for aggressive assaults outside the front. My first time back in years (bc of the rude manager) and he shouted something rude at us bc we were blocking the bar which was clear at the time. I once stormed out because he shouted in my face hence why I hadn’t been in so long. Horrible person. The only pub I’ve ever known to not have a big group of regulars, it’s not popular among the locals. I’ve also seen him be extremely rude to customers, there’s a very quick staff turn over here (I knew the chef here who hated it and the assistant manager quit on the spot bc of how poorly he treated them) and he has very unhygienic habits behind the bar which I spotted during the peak of covid. Such a waste of a nice building. I advise you not to support this place, the swan opposite has much better customer service and is an all round more pleasant environment. I won’t be returning until under new management and I know many who agree.

Was a place we just popped into to see about a lunch on New Year’s Eve they had a table so we chose from a varied menu.Everyone was pleased with their choices.very busy but we never made to wait or rushed in anyway.Definitely go again

What a great pub. Welcomed in on cold January day and we were allowed to bring bikes in and store in the garden so they were safe. Good pub grub and fantastic friendly service! Just what we needed mid ride! Thank you

If i could leave a 0 i would the staff are so rude and the food was terribly undercooked with the salad being unwashed a clearly out of date telling by the slime that came with my rocket. Staff didn't seem to be bothered and with them more interested in their mobile telephones avoid at all costs

New to Wantage so still trying out all the bars and pubs. Stopped in here on a very busy Remembrance Sunday managed to get a table and just enjoyed a Sunday drink for the first time in a long time. Bar staff were excellent offering to bring drinks over rather than have you hanging around the bar. Although I didn't eat there was a carvery and a comprehensive menu that others were tucking into.

So pleased that The Bear was unable to accommodate me for Sunday lunch! If they had, I wouldn't have encountered the enjoyable experience at this pub/restaurant. From the moment I walked in staff were welcoming and helpful. A menu was immediately available - it wasn't at The Bear- and I was able to book a table at my preferred time. The food was well cooked and flavoursome, with a good range of vegetables to accompany the roast. The service provided by waitresses and bar staff was exemplary; charming and attentive, without being over-solicitous. Will definitely return.

Food cold glass my wife had was dirty toilets all looking tired not a good experience

We regularly visit The King Alfreds Head because it is a really lovely friendly pub and the food is great. I especially loved the fish finger sandwich. Not this time what’s happened to it ? The fish fingers were very cheap probably catering packs of fish fingers the fish was grey and didn’t taste very nice ( has the chef changed maybe?) the sandwich had lettuce in, which made the sandwich soggy and the tartare sauce was spread IN the sandwich, not on the side like it should be. Basically it was horrible not up to their normal standard. I was very disappointed I have recommended this pub to friends and family and the food has definitely let it down this time. My daughter had a burger which was also not great the burger was actually cut up in pieces in the bun and very dry. I have never had sub standard food from this pub before maybe it was an ‘off’ day. The staff are lovely friendly and helpful. It won’t stop us from going there because we love it so much but I think the food needs to be better and maybe vary the menu a bit too.

Beautiful garden, friendly and polite staff, average food but a big disappointment when served a waffle that was not freshly made there but was the ones we buy from supermarkets in packages of four, charged £5.90. This kind of "desserts" shouldn't ever be served in a pub/ restaurant. The garden and the caring staff was the best part of our experience.

We have recently moved to the area we are trying out all the pubs and restaurants. King Alfreds Head has a beautiful outside seating area and welcoming interior when the weather is bad. This has now become our favourite pub. The staff are very friendly...

Had a great meal here, nice outdoor space, staff were good but we had to call them over after 10 mins to take our order - I think they were just very busy at that particular moment in time. We would definitely go back again..

Such a shame ....... lovely garden especially in the good weather. But the service is so slow, its a quiet Tuesday evening. We have sat with empty glass for so long. It actually pays to have more staff on because people will get through more drinks and spend more money.

Very nice place to rest your bones indoors or outside in the courtyard. The staff are welcoming. I had a lovely pot of tea with fish,chips and mushy peas, could anything be more perfect.
