The location is simply fabulous. At the top of Swaledale with views all around. Set up for walkers - so friendly, helpful and knowledgeable about the area. Mixing with fellow walkers meant a very sociable stay. Room was good size and comfortable. Restaurant bar and lounge were of high quality and brought a high enjoyable stay. Matt and Dave are great hosts. Thoroughly recommended.

We stayed at Keld Lodge for three nights 8th 9th 10th of March. Despite the lodge being geared up for walkers who are doing the Coast to Coast or the Pennine way, after our experience we would highly recommend booking for a few nights to explore the local area. The Lodge has only a few staff, who are dedicated to making the guests comfortable and meeting their needs. The accommodation is comfortable with all the comforts of home, plenty of hot water, Internet, TV, tea and coffee. Food is reasonably priced, large portions, excellent quality and produced quickly. Breakfast has enough in it to set you up for the day and packed lunch is available to order. Apart from the Pennine Way and the Coast to Coast routes there are plenty of local routes which need navigating and exploring. We will be returning to continue our exploration of the area and hopefully be able to get a room at the Keld Lodge.

During our long day walking from hawes we exchanged pleasantries with other walkers and locals. Our first question to folk during these exchanges was ‘is there somewhere warm in Keld to get a pint and some grub?’ Responses were contradictory and in one case somewhat mysterious. When we finally beheld the Keld lodge. We were thrilled. I could almost taste the gravel laced beef, followed by a warm stodgy pudding. The sign on the door put a halt to my wishful thinking. FULLY BOOKED. A very sad sight. Damn should have picked up the phone. We still got in and had a drink. But it wasn’t the anticipated welcome we have had come to enjoy in Yorkshire. I wonder if this was why people had been hesitant to recommend it. Don’t think I would go back despite handy location for walkers. It was quite cold physically and metaphorically. If you book I’m sure you will have a better time.

I stayed here several years ago on the C2C walk and gave it 2 stars. As a result, my expectations were low. However, I have just stayed again for 1 night as part of the the Herriot Way walk and was very pleasantly surprised. From the initial greeting, to the service during both dinner and breakfast everything was flawless. They have a fabulous dry room and they even carried my bag up to the room beforehand - which most places do not do. Admittedly the room was still more Travel Lodge than Premier Inn but it was very comfortable and the place now deserves 4 stars. The Landlord was excellent.

Stayed at Keld Lodge for 2 nights during August bank holiday weekend. This was my umpteenth stay at the Lodge and it was as perfect as ever. Situated perfectly for anyone on the peninsula walk or coast to coast wals there are also a multitude of other walks from the door, from very easy to decidedly trying. The Lodge itself is well run by Dave and Matt who are perfect hosts. The rooms, mostly en suite, are perfect for the needs of walkers and are spotkessly clean and mist comfortable. The restaurant area has fab views and all meals are scrummy. And with a well stocked bar what else can you ask for. In my opinion the surrounding area is the best the Dales have to offer, and there is some very stiff competition, and u go often. When I do Keld Lodge is always my first choice of accommodation. Thanks for another great stay guys & team.

Visited Keld Lodge in June 2021 with my wife. Beautiful part of the country and received a very warm welcome from the owners David and Matt. Being on both the coast to coast and pennine way routes the lodge has a large number of walkers stay over as they complete their walks . The rooms are clean, tidy, comfortable and reasonably priced. We stayed two nights and there was everything we needed in our room. The Inn has a bar and restaurant and the food was excellent with something for all tastes on the menu.

A drive over from Kirkby Lonsdale brought us to the beautiful village of Keld with the Lodge and it's welcoming signs for teas, coffee etc. Stopping to visit we were surprised to find the front door open but the inner door locked despite two signs saying open. We saw people inside so tried a side entrance. Non existant. A couple of people sat on a bench just shrugged their shoulders when asked which way in! Found a back door only for it to be immediately flung open and we were told, in no uncertain terms to GO AWAY. Considering it was 11.45 near lunchtime I would hate to have been a hungry tired traveller in need of help. A nice hotel further down the road in Thwaite helped alleviate our anger.

Stayed at this hotel, a former youth hostel (stayed there nineteen years previously as a YH) after a tough walk from Kirkby Stephen via the Nine Standards. Property now a hotel but still feels like a Youth Hostel. It's old, slightly damp but very comfortable. The bedroom was very spacious, on suite reasonable as shower head needs changing. Terrific drying room & a couple of reception rooms which were okay. The welcome was not the greatest but the guy who did the welcome warmed as time went on. I should say the hotel was solidly booked. The evening meal was absolutely lovely, tasty, plentiful & with wonderful views. Sadly the breakfast was very greasy & small in quantity.Very limited accommodation in this location

The famous Northern hospitality we have experienced at every stop on the Coast to Coast walk came to a screeching halt just inside the front door of Keld Lodge when we were met by the unsmiling manager who, to put it politely, isn't suited to the hospitality industry. He is the type who seems to think he's doing you a favour by just being there. We were wet and a bit tired after a 19+ kilometre walk in the rain and were bluntly informed on arrival "the rooms aren't ready" in a tone that offered no hint of regret. Asked under the circumstances if there was somewhere we could perhaps sit out of the rain we were told rather off-handedly we could use the lounge but under no circumstances were we to eat our sandwiches on the premises. So it was something of a surprise when the miserable fellow offered us tea or coffee, which has been pretty common welcome elsewhere. "Yes" we said. "Thanks". It was only after delivering the warm drinks that he asked which room he should charge them to!!! Welcome to Keld Lodge! There are several excellent B&Bs in Keld. This is definitely not one of them. The restaurant however does serve good meals but I wouldn't recommend actually staying there given the alternatives in the village.

Before embarking on a long hike we chose to book ahead for an evening meal at Keld Lodge as we knew we wouldn't feel like driving with sore legs. Whilst the service was attentive and the views very nice, the food itself was a real let down. My veggie lasagne tasted like it had been overcooked and heated in a microwave more than once. It must have had just 2 layers of pasta, topped off with an inch of very tasteless melted orange cheese! If this had been a cheap and cheerful pub dinner I wouldn't have minded so much but the prices are too high for that! My partner's beef pie was tough and the pastry burnt. The vegetables were very overboiled and unseasoned. This place has great potential but unfortunately the cooking was poor.

We had the special soup - curried butternut squash and the warm goat cheese salad to begin the the roasted chicken and their signature braised beef with puff pastry as our mains. Each item was delicious and well presented. Dessert choices was standard. We especially loved the view and the artwork which was for sale - done by a local artist. Great meal and lovely ambiance.

Keld Lodge located on the trail after a walk up from Reeth which on our day was wet, windy and cold. So it was wonderful to find a fully operational drying room here...albeit full to the brim...which made all items of clothing dry but very stinky...there is no such thing as dignity on this walk, over pragmatism. Wifi was a bit useless here, being so far away from the exchange on copper with a few more establishments even further down the track...so don't expect to be talking with video to your grandson in Los Angeles. The other nice thing about this place was the guest lounge...we went in there after dinner and looked out at the clearing summer sky...very atmospheric.

Having walked 15 miles on the Pennine way my wife and I were really looking forward to some food at the only pub in town. Unfortunately we were turned away at just before 7.30 despite the place being relatively empty. We were given different reasons why we couldn't be seated- from they stop serving at 7.30 to they only took so many reservations and couldn't manage any more. Either way I felt it was a poor effort. We were hoping for a warm sit down meal but I'd have been happy with a take away sandwich. Little emphasis on customer service I'm afraid. There was no where else to eat and we were camping. We asked if there was anyway we could get something and the manager offered to sell us some crisps. (Thanks!)If you are going to chance eating here I'd advise strongly to book ahead. Personally I'd avoid. Not walker friendly from what we observed and frankly the sign outside advertises evening meals should be changed to early evening meals only.

I've been visiting Keld for about 25 years and was delighted when this former Youth Hostel was turned into a restaurant/lodge/pub. And for the first couple of years, the beer was pretty good and the welcome was pretty warm. However of late it has felt less welcoming and the beer is very unimpressive. In its defence, would say that the food looks very nice but it seems you may need to book in advance because the staff are keen to shut up shop very early. We have tried to visit for an evening drink at about 9.30pm on several occasions and been turned away because they are closing! Seems bizarre to turn away custom in a tiny place like Keld, but I guess they need to put their walking guests ahead of casual drinkers. Wouldn't go out of my way to visit this place, but Keld itself is in the most beautiful surroundings - so come for the scenery instead

Having stayed in Keld Lodge on our previous C2C crossing, on arrival we were welcomed by Matt with the words” You stayed here two years ago, welcome back” Whether he actually remembered or whether his computer ‘reminded’ him matters not– his acknowledgement demonstrated he took an interest in his guests and that was enough. Keld Lodge was once a shooting lodge and the room, although small, was clean and comfortable. The small en-suite was adequate for purpose. The huge drying room was great allowing boots and clothes to be dried out after a trek through the bogs over the Nine Standards. Meals served in the restaurant were delicious. The healthy light breakfast next morning was enough to sustain us on our walk next day, although the cooked breakfast looked delicious. There is no mobile reception and Wi-Fi (free, small donation to Mountain rescue appreciated) is restricted to the bar due to the thickness of the walls in the lodge, but this was not an issue. Just a little info: There are very few eating places en-route to Reeth. Matt informed us that they had taken over the Kings Head in Gunnerside and this offered light lunch meals for walkers taking the lower route. Stayed 7th June 2015

On enquiring if we could order some food - I was assured that would be fine and he went to look at where we could sit. I then explained that we had 3 very tired but well behaved dogs with us and that if needed we could even sit outside. The reply came back that 'the kitchen was now too busy to accommodate us for food but we could have a drink , not even a sandwich was offered to take away, despite knowing our walking day and camping arrangements. We were duly very disappointed. The sign outside the lodge needs amending as we felt quite unwelcome and it was very 'dog unfriendly'.

Food at Keld Lodge gets better each time we visit. Starters are imaginative with well-judged garnishes (if chicken liver pate is on the menu go for it). There is a good choice of beautifully cooked main courses sufficient to cater for all tastes, and a variety of interesting desserts. If you haven't walked over from Kirkby Stephen you may find the portions a bit generous, but you can order one portion between two, which works well especially for the starters. The wine list has a good selection of suitable wines. The setting is informal, the service attentive, the view out of the conservatory window unsurpassed. There are few better places to eat within a wide radius.

It was a wet and miserable Wednesday and decided to go out for the evening so checked out the three sample menus on line for the Farmers Arms, Keld Lodge and The Punch Bowl, we decided on Keld, booked a table and off we went. The table was booked for 7.30 as the last orders are at 8. We were met by the owner who was very friendly and efficient and served a very well kept pint of Black Sheep. We were shown to our table in comfortable if slightly old fashioned dinning room. There were a good selection of interesting starters all under £6 we chose home made soup and garlic bread and a garlic bruschetta with pesto, grilled asparagus and peppers. For mains we chose, lambs liver, a fish pie and roast shoulder of lamb, ranging in price from £11 to £14, veg and potatoes were included. They were all very good. Puddings lemon tart and a tart tatin again very good. In summary good honest interesting pub food and we would return.

This was our second stay at keld lodge and both times have been excellent hence the return visit. We have a German shepherd who travels with us and she is made just as welcome as us with her own doggy welcome pack. The food in the restaurant is fantastic, and worth trying if your just passing. We will be returning again in the near future thanks for a lovely break. For walkers there is a drying room and pack lunch service if needed.

A second stay at Keld Lodge and every bit as enjoyable. 'Guv'nor Matt and chef James provided excellent service and food. Rooms warm and cosy and a lovely relaxing atmosphere in beautiful surroundings.

I have never commented on trip advisor before, but felt in this instance I had to warn other travellers about this place. 4 of us were walking the Pennine way this summer and decided to book a table at Keld Lodge on the night we were passing through. Sadly, the service and food were both diabolical. It first started with the waitress coming to our table and telling us in an unfriendly tone "come on, be quite and give me your order". When the food arrived it was average at best. The waitress then came back to take our dessert order, and proceeded to accidentally knock my friend’s entire glass of red wine into his plate of pasta that he hadn’t finished eating. He was left with an empty glass of wine and a plate of pasta swimming around in red wine. We expected the waitress to apologise, clear up the mess and bring a new glass of wine for my friend, but instead she just picked the empty glass up, put it back where it was and said "I haven’t got all day, give me your dessert order!". Shocking service! The atmosphere seemed to be tense and we were made to feel very unwelcome. On top of all this, a member of our party was feeling queasy ever since eating their meal and the next morning they vomited violently. They immediately felt better after being sick and carried on with the days walk; implying the vomiting was caused by something they ate at Keld Lodge. I would not recommend this place to any hikers or travellers, I wish we had bought some sandwiches at the previous town and not gone anywhere near this restaurant.

Trying to be a niche restaurant in the wrong place. Most diners are walkers who require nutritious food.Menu had no pasta available and the portions were small. The belly pork must have come from a micro pig - it was 7.5cm long and 5cm wide & deep..Fish was tiny and the beef pie with Black Sheet Ale and puff pastry crust was actually mushroom and beef casserole in a dish with a pastry lid. No bottom=no pie.The fabric of the room is poor. I was seated on a wobbly floorboard, evertime someone walked behind me i was jiggled up and down. Nearly sea sick after an hour of that.

Keld Lodge marks the half way point on the Coast 2 Coast. It was an unexpected bonus to find that the restaurant here was an absolute cracker. Service by the welcoming staff was excellent. The menu was a delight after 8 days of Pub Grub. The Roasted Pork Belly was as good or better, than any I've had in a city restaurant. My husband thoroughly enjoyed a new entree offering - a pork and ham mosaic terrine. (Apologies to the chef - it's a bit more special than I have described.) Prices seem very reasonable for the quality of food and service.Absolutely worth a visit.

We were staying nearby and our hosts booked us a table at the Lodge for dinner one cold night this April. We arrived dripping wet and were immediately greeted by incredibly friendly manager who showed us where to hang coats to dry and proceeded to look after us personally the whole night. Very relaxed and warm atmosphere. Food just a nice cut above your average gastro pub fare, yet not so fancy that it was over the top for dinner as part of a holiday. Wine lovely - manager gave us a good recommendation. Good fresh veg, quality meat and thoughtfully presented. Just wish they'd caramelised the sugar on my creme brûlée properly.

No beer on draught, no food available. The only drink on tap was from yorkshire water. Don't know how the landlord makes a living, rumour is he has funds hidden in a barrel of Wensleydale Gold.

We visited 20th October 2024 for a meal for our sons birthday. We always go for special occassions however the meals were not as good as normal . Myself and daughter In law chose the bottomless Chinese my Husband and son chose trio parmos and my other son chose the Barney rubble mixed grill . Our table was booked for 6.30 we sat for 20 minutes and I had to ask Bar staff if we were to place our order at the bar to which she said I will come to your table . Long story short we waited and waited when the food finally arrived the trio parmos were extreamly dry and very hard unedible really . Very dissapointing experence .

I love my fish and chips and this place just went to number one in my hit list - taking me right back to my fave chippy in Thirsk. A quick pop in for lunch, but I'll be back for the full monty again. Unfortunately for my husband (who is veggie), they're a traditional chippy cooking in dripping, so no veggie options.
