Kavanagh's in East Riding of Yorkshire

My first visit here with a friend. It was a very busy lunchtime, Wednesday. Staff were good - very friendly and efficient. I ordered the BLT sandwich in wholemeal bread, my friend had a ham and tomato sandwich. Her's was lovely, mine not so. There was one very small piece of back bacon in the first half, and the bacon in the other half was so hard I couldn't cut it with a knife, let alone my teeth! It had clearly been pre-cooked and kept warm - probably from the breakfast which they curiously stop serving at 11.45. The lettuce was wet, so had made the bread soggy. The only bit I enjoyed was the side salad. I didn't feel able to say anything at the time, as my friend was paying for us both - a British thing! However, if anyone had approached to ask if our food was OK - I would definitely have said something. The coffee was very good - but disappointing food for me. I left most of it. I don't know if I would go back - there is too much competition in Beverley to serve at this level. And the upstairs room is cold and uninviting.

Another fabulous lunch at Kavanaghs today. Chicken caesar salad was lovely & my friends frittata special was really nice. Staff here are great and the food never disappoints. Highly recommended for lunch or afternoon tea.

The food was awful but the staff were excellent, particularly the manageress. I had scrambled eggs on toast with button mushrooms. I make excellent scrambled eggs, slightly runny and creamy. I think the eggs were made from dried egg in a tin, no butter no cream. In fact I’m not sure they had ever been anywhere near a hen. The toast was wholemeal, not white as ordered and soggy rather than toasted. The mushrooms were tasteless. The tea was as expected, but be aware Yorkshire tea is strong and you may want to take the bag out. The manageress knew her job, gave me plenty of time and was attentive. Ultimately she did not charge me for the meal which was astute of her. If I go again it won’t be for the scrambled eggs!

Lovely little cafe. Friendly staff. Nice atmosphere. Good menu. Very clean and airy. Can recommend. We'll be back again.

Having read a poor review on this site I feel compelled to review our experience - can't believe it! We visited here for a luxury afternoon tea with friends. I had previously visited a number of local establishments, in an near Beverley, providing cream teas. Kavanaghs was simply amazing. We had the luxury cream tea and it was absolutely gorgeous. Everything was perfect and there was more than enough - we took a 'doggy bag' home. The staff who served us were gorgeous and did not hurry us - nothing was too much trouble. I have bought gift vouchers as presents as want my friends to have this wonderful experience. Definitely a 5 * experience - you will not be disappointed.

Went for lunch just before the mid-day rush and managed to get one of the last tables available. So lucky as the queues quickly formed. We enjoyed a lovely light lunch of a panini and a Yorkshire pork pie salad. Great pot of and tea orange juice all served in good time with friendly smiles.

Visited for an afternoon tea which was lovely. Staff were friendly and we were not rushed during a busy lunch time. There was a nice atmosphere to the place. Would recommend to others and will visit again.

Went for tea and scone, lovely service, nice people, spacious. The scones were very fresh, served with cream and individual pots of jam. Tea was in a pot. Came to £15 for 2, so not a bad price.

Visited on a Saturday and arrived at 11:45am. It was full but were told we could wait and only had to wait about 7 minutes until seated. Staff were friendly and polite. It was busy inside and took about 20 minutes for a toastie and sandwich. Cakes were nice and came quickly. Food is very nice.

Terrible experience. We are regular customers to Kavanaghs going at least couple of times a month for the last 3 years and suddenly today out of the blue you have to book a table in advance! This has always been the case for afternoon tea but never for a lunch or cake. We were told that it has always been in place and that we were just lucky that everytime - in the last 3 years - we have ever been that we have been able to get a table even if sometimes a little wait which is fine. A very rude staff member who made us appear stupid when if this is the case that need to book it is a new policy why not just admit that instead of lying - not sure we will ever be back again after such treatment!!

We were waiting for half an hour for our order to arrive, which felt too long. Caesar salad had plenty of chicken, but leaves were drenched in dressing. It made it sickly and turned a healthy meal into an unhealthy one. Made some of the croutons a bit moist too. M&S Caesar salad is much better. Steak and cheese sandwich and chips was good though. Generally like it in here but it seemed an off day. The cafetière coffee was not well made - possibly too much coffee in there, or perhaps a blend I just didn’t like.

We had a fabulous (pre-booked) afternoon tea. It was delicious. Little details make all the difference; being offered extra tea & coffee and separate plates, cutlery and napkins for savoury and sweet courses. I would definitely recommend. They boxed up the cakes we couldn't eat!

First visit from going in the staff were friendly and the home Cooked food was delicious you might have to wait for your food but it’s worth the wait and we weren’t rushed and one of the ladies (kat) had a chat with us my friend and I would recommend this cafe and it’s independent

It was really busy as it was on a Saturday, however a really nice gentleman found us a table on the ground floor near the window, l had fish and chips and we couldn't fault anything, would go back there

Lovely little place, have to sit outside if you have a dog with you, but they still made us feel welcome and a fuss of our pooch. Lovely friendly staff, delicious food and drink. Even brought a water bowl out for the dog. We had the eggs Benedict, so delicious. Would definitely recommend. Will be back.

Cajun Salmon Fillet…. Very tasty salmon, but, couldn’t taste any Cajun flavour on it, plus lack of a sauce made it a very dry meal. Could have done with some Cajun sauce to flavour and make the rice not so dry.

Excellent food served by excellent staff. So friendly and helpful. Highly recommended. If everybody was as enthusiastic as the people working here, the world would be a better place.

I had afternoon tea here with a friend, the table we sat at was not very clean at all and the cutlery was filthy! The afternoon was a total rip off £18.95 per person for 4 little tiny sandwiches, 3 little tiny cakes and a scone with clotted cream. It is the worst afternoon tea I have ever had and a total rip off! Avoid!

We had a good lunch here and were well looked after by the staff. Our soup, panini and eggs benedict were very nicely cooked and the drinks that came with them nice too.

I’m recently diagnosed as lactose intolerant. The kind staff member went to check with the kitchen what I could have. There was an almond and orange cake which was good and moist.

I went here for afternoon tea for my birthday, I can honest say this is the best I have ever had, and I have been to the top London hotels, for afternoon tea, not as good as Kavanah. Food beautifully presented and absolutely delicious, selection of sandwiches including smoked salmon and prawns, lovely home made scones with clotted cream and delicious fresh cream cakes. Big surprise was they knew it was my birthday and the staff came and sang happy birthday with another cake. All staff were very helpful and efficient, and lovely,Doing best to help. Came home with a 'doggie bag' couldn't eat it all, and each item was individually wrapped and placed carefully in a box. Will be back soon for lunch it looked very good from what I saw on the other diners. Thank you all staff at Kavannah, I will be back.

Went to Kavanaghs to mark my Mums 90th birthday in a party of 5, contact was initially by email with Robert. Robert provide quick and detailed information about their cream tea options. I explained that my Mum required wheelchair access to the premises. In addition, I gave our preferences for drinks and sandwich fillings via email. On arrival, Kavanaghs were gea,red up and ready for us, providing a metal ramp to help negotiate the front step. Once shown to our table all of the staff were very attentive and service was quick and efficient. The sandwiches were excellent and filled generously, the small chocolate cake was lovely, the scones too were fresh and great. All in all it was a lovely surprise for my Mum, some of the staff even sang Happy Birthday to her when her food arrived. A huge thank you to Robert and the other members of staff who made out visit so good.

A day trip to Beverley for me is not complete without dropping in at Kavanagh's for lunch or a mid-afternoon drink or snack. I've been several times with my wife over the years and we visited on Easter Monday accompanied with my mother-in-law who was staying with us for a few days. You are always made to feel welcome, even when it is busy. I know the staff do their utmost to find a table, but I'd still recommend to get there early as this place is very popular for obvious reasons. We were led to a table at the back that had just been cleaned, in fact what really appeals is how smart the antiquated place is and this sets a great atmosphere to relax in. The menu covers a variety of breakfasts, light lunches and drinks, as well as a specials board. The whole experience of being able to choose food that is fresh is not lost on the more discerning diner and little touches like serving a biscuit with a hot coffee really do add a sparkle in these cost-cutting times. My wife ordered her main meal with chips and my mother-in-law had the fish pie. I ordered the satay chicken and rice from the specials board. Each meal was freshly prepared and very hot, a welcome change from your more average place. It really was tasty and well within the standard you'd expect from a top restaurant. We look forward to returning soon.

First visit and I never leave reviews,but had to as our first visit was absolutely faultless, fantastic friendly service with humour and a smile and they even accommodated our pooch with a fresh water bowl brought out. Took friends for lunch. Great atmosphere, comfortable table and excellent service. Wide choice on the menu at very reasonable prices. We were served some delicious food and plenty of it. Outstanding value for money.

This promised a lot. But sensed there would be problems when we had to wait a long time to get the menu and order. Even worse, people who came in after got served before us. The chips we had ordered as a side dish appeared at the next table and taken away as they'd not ordered them. They came back about 5 minutes later to our table. The toastie was not a toastie as such but two bits of toast on top of each other. Overall, highly disappointing as it looked good and to be fair the afternoon tea served to a table nearby did look good.

Lovely traditional place for a light bite, lunch, or a quick pitstop for coffee and cake or in our case tea and scones. Great service, polite and friendly. My only criticism is perhaps the lack of space for people with mobility problems.

Visited here for a quick coffee and teacake - after trying another local cafe where our order wasn’t even taken 10 mins after they brought us the menu and the waitress disappeared! Staff at Kavanaghs were friendly and efficient and brought us our coffee and a fruity tea cake in just a few minutes. Loos were a bit ‘snug’ and tricky queueing in the space available - but just a minor quibble!

We stumbled on this place looking for brunch. The food was excellent, the staff terrific. There were clearly a lot of regulars in, which is always a good sign. If we lived anywhere near Beverley we'd be in here a couple of times a week!

Having been several times on our way to the coast we enjoy Beverley. Kavanghs is always a must for food. We don’t normally arrive on a Sunday but this time we did and had a lovely Sunday lunch. They don’t advertise it much on the website but it’s on their specials board. Extremely good quality and value. Fresh vegetables ( having suffered frozen sprouts at a visit to a recent pub chain I was pleased) No sprouts on offer but a range of good vegetables. You can of course also have the usual lunches on the menu or sandwiches , panini’s etc. Very good staff and great customer care.Highly recommended

Covid precautions were excellent with dividers and sanitiser. Our waitress was so lovely and the food was delicious. I had afternoon tea with coffee which didn’t disappoint and my partner had hunters chicken which he enjoyed. Lovely area too.

We had decided to spend the day and Beverley and we were desperate for a coffee when we arrived. We spotted Kavanagh’s on the Main Street.The staff were really friendly and the whole area was Covid safe with individual screens around each table.We liked it so much we ended up going back for lunch. The scones were fantastic and my chicken sandwich was full of chicken breast meat. I can highly recommend it. There was a really personal touch and it was nice that the staff recognised us when we went back later in the day.

Really looking forward to the Lockdown etc lifting so we can get back to our frequent visits to Kavanaghs. Excellent food, whether there for coffee and scones, Sunday lunch or afternoon tea, this Tea Rooms cannot be beaten. The serving and kitchen staff are clearly well drilled in what they have to do and now that the Covid kerfuffle is wreaking havoc, the protection offered at Kavanagh's is the bench mark for other establishments. Roll on the return to normality so that WE can return to Kavanagh's!

Visited here in a cold wet day. This cafe’s COVID procedures are excellent. They have plastic screens between the tables which I found rather difficult to navigate around...perhaps it was just me? The coffee was very tasty...as was our meals but I would prefer my jacket potatoes cooked in the oven, I think these were done in the microwave. However, well worth a return visit.

Spent an afternoon in Beverly with my 2 young children and mother during the summer holidays and decided to have some lunch at Kavanagh's because it had curb appeal. Unfortunately there were no tables free outside so we headed inside. On arrival we were met by a waitress who asked us what we wanted! After asking for a table, she looked us up and down and noticeably sighed and said we would need to wait out of the way whilst she cleared a table. She made it very clear we weren't welcome. No hello, no smile, just a sigh and a glare. Surely in 2020, you would be welcoming trade with open arms. We've never been made to feel like this anywhere else so we walked out again. Very disappointing and quite shameful. Suffice to say, we won't ever be back.

We went in for an early lunch and felt safe as soon as we went in, Perspex screams to keep you safe, hand gels at lots of points. My husband had the scrambled eggs with mushrooms and I had a jacket with prawns in Marie sauce it was delicious, been before and definitely be back. Staff so friendly. Thank you.

Pleasant surroundings, lovely meal and helpful people. We felt especially safe as clear plastic screens separated the tables. Great service all round.

Covid Restrictions again gone mad here! If you enjoy eating and drinking behind plastic curtains akin to sitting in a loading bay, on your own, or perhaps like your coffee sitting in a shower stall this is the place for you!

Popped in here for the first time a week ago really glad to have discovered is a lovely friendly place which serves lovely home made food.

Visited on bank holiday Monday - had a short wait outside for a table but it was worth waiting. Had a lovely lunch including gluten free sandwiches and cake. The afternoon tea at another table looked amazing and we'll definitely go back to try that. Great value for money with good service.

The food was wonderful and the staff couldn't have been more helpful. Given the current circumstances, this place has adapted amazingly! First time today but now on top of our places to go/eat list when in Beverley.

Warm welcome, clear explanation of cleanliness measures, we were shown to a corner table in the elegantly decorated upstairs room. We were ready for a good tea after our walk and were not disappointed! A pot of tea arrived with hot water and glasses of iced water, closely followed by a cake stand piled with delicious sandwiches including sliced ham with Brie, coronation chicken with almonds, egg mayonnaise and smoked salmon with cream cheese. To follow were 4 different individual cakes (my favourite was strawberry shortcake), and scones with jam and cream. Our tea pot was replaced when it ran out and the last few cakes were boxed up for us to take home. Couldn’t have been better!

Wonderful Sunday lunch and excellent service. We had the pork which was succulent and the begs were perfectly cooked. There was even some crackling.

Service was very quick and friendly. Felt really safe due to the screens and table distancing. Only had tea and scones, which were decent but not amazing. The clotted cream was nice to have instead of just butter.

This cafe has gone the extra mile to make their customers be safe and feel safe. Tables are 1socially distanced with the addition of screens in between all. The food is excellent and the staff are organised, polite and have full control of who is visiting, they are confident and that makes the customer enjoy their visit and be able to relax, we have booked again for lunch, really looking forward to it. I had jacket potato with coronation chicken. My husband has the scrambled eggs with mushrooms both were delicious. The staff are friendly and make sure you are o k. Will definitely be back.

We visited twice on a recent visit. The staff were very welcoming and friendly and fully set up with social distancing. The food was delicious and I would definitely recommend a visit.

Whilst visiting Beverley on holiday, we stopped off for lunch at this delightful place as a family of four. We were seated upstairs in a gorgeous, oldy-worldy room which had been arranged very well in terms of Covid and the staff were excellent at social distancing taking much care in their duties. The tearoom was very busy but felt peaceful, safe and quiet. A lovely atmosphere. The staff were overwhelmingly professional, friendly and helpful. Service with a smile. We ordered drinks first and the service was in very good time. Someone across from us had the Afternoon Tea which looked delicious! We ordered three Fish and Chips with mushy peas and one Steak and Kidney pie. All of our meals were fantastic. The food was fresh, tasty and perfectly cooked. The portion sizes were excellent! The toilets are clean with special anti-bac sprays, hand sanitisers and wipes to keep customers safe. We highly recommend visiting Kavanaghs - it was such a wonderful experience. I visited kavannahs with my parents for lunchI have coeliacs disease and can't eat gluten and normally I end up having a jacket potato I was really pleased to see that there is gluten free bread available and I could choose any filling I wantedThe lovely waitress checked all the other ingredients with me and the chef and what I had sas a fabulous prawn sandwich with salad and crisps How lovely to have lunch like normal peopleWell done to all at kavannahs

Went here for an early mothers day treat 3 generations absolutely fantastic gorgeous sandwiches packed full cakes absolutely mouthwatering 7 scones to top it of. Absolutely stuffed couldnt eat it all! waitresses lovely explained that if we couldnt eat it all it wouild be boxed up so no need to try to fit it all in tea replenished. cannot fault this lovely tea room 2nd visit here definately wont be thge last! well done everyone xxxx

Had a coffee with my son yesterday as he fancied a wrap and I wanted to try a panini. The coffees were excellent and nice and hot not like some of the coffee shops where they can’t seem to make a hot drink. The wrap and panini were delicious and the staff were really helpful and patient waiting for us to choose.

Lovely to see this big cafe so busy. The tea room is very much alive in Yorkshire. Great service, nice food and good value with huge portions.

Called in for lunch and was very pleasantly surprised. Firstly by the size of the place - quite the Tardis, lot's of tables both downstairs and up. Quickly found a table for 3, despite the place being very busy.Wonderful, very reasonably priced menu - only problem was I really was spoiled for choice. Daughter opted for the homemade tomato soup, I opted for scrambled eggs with chives and mushrooms on toasted bloomer and husband had the pork pie and cheese ploughmans, two large filter coffees and a J20 - £25. You can pay more in Wetherspoon's and not enjoy the lovely, fresh homemade produce that this cafe has to offer. The food really was top notch and plentiful and the waitress service very friendly and efficient.When going to the till to pay I noticed an amazing display of quite obviously homemade cakes which, again, were very reasonably priced.I will definitely be calling in again and would highly recommend.

Leuke Engelse tea/lunchroom. Er bleven mensen in- en uitstromen; alle tafels bezet. Typisch Engels gerecht genoten: panini; die was goed. Mijn tafelgenoten hadden sandwiches en cheese plate; ook goed. Lekkere pot thee erbij. Vlotte bediening.

My wife and I had a very enjoyable lunch here recently. Service was great and the food was very good. It was busy but fortunately we arrived early so got a table Ok. Would certainly go back again.

I took my husband here for a valentines present and I have to say this is the best tea and cake we have had. Plenty there and really filling. When I phoned to book the lady was really helpful going thought the sandwiches and cakes and asking if we had any food allergies etc. Very good value for money. Definitely be back again.

At almost five pound for eggs on toast I expected something good but boy was I disappointed! The coffee was no better and the server had a definite 'take it or leave it' attitude. Nver again!

Disgraceful food, dry burger warmed in microwave with cold chips. My fiancé ordered a slice of chocolate fudge cake and received a slice half the size of what was on display. Dirty glass wear, will never be going back and warning friends and family to avoid.
