We enjoyed the pork set and tempura set and ice cream. I hadn't realized how much I was missing Japanese food until I was reminded of what I'm missing. Everything was super tasty and comforting.

From what I gather, Kansai Kitchen runs the kitchen at the Hillgrove pub. With a small menu of japanese dishes. They also do events where they do pri-fixe menus. We attended a Shabu Shabu night which was amazing. If you know Shabu Shabu, its a beautiful meal, soup, stew. Some people will mistake this for a chinese hot pot, but really only the heating element is the same. Started off with a gorgeous cold sake. The quality of the meat was amazing, the vegetables crisp and fresh. The accompanying sauces were delicate and bold. Two big rounds of shabu, one round of rice soup and then a matcha ice cream with red bean paste to finish off. Liam was lovely, super informative. We were very well take care of and will join him again I'm sure! The pub is in stokes croft, it a quiet residential area, free street parking after 6pm. The pub was buzzing but not loud, great music in the background, super nice barman. All around a great night. Anyone who says the neighborhood is quesionable is pretentious and doesn't know the area!

Really enjoyed the Japanese food - very different to the likes of Wagamama, but in a good way. We tried lots of new things, including lotus root. The dishes were quite small so suggest 3 dishes per person, which means it is not cheap. Chef friendly and passionate about the food. We enjoyed ourselves.

Came here off the back of a Wrigggle deal, food sounded amazing, authentic Japanese cuisine. There are very few photos of the venue, The Hillgrove, and for good reason. This isn’t a restaurant at all, it’s a bit of a run down pub with tables dotted around where you can drink or eat. As a drinking venue this is fine, barely any parking though FYI as it’s on a residential street with big blocks of flats. But as a dining experience, I had hoped for something a little more refined. What I will say is that the food seemed authentic, was full of punchy flavours, and Liam even came out and chatted through some of the dishes and his experiences of Japan which was a really great touch. Personal favourite was the pancake, which was just incredible but very rich, and the lightly battered chicken. The food was very good, it would have been nice to be told that the dishes will come as and when they’re ready though, and we didn’t receive one of the dishes that we had paid for. The Wriggle deal was only £30 which is good value, but due to the venue and missing a dish it has to be 3 stars. If you don’t mind dirty toilets and a bit of a hipster atmosphere whilst eating then I’d say give it a go, unfortunately my girlfriend was put off by this.

The Kansai Kitchen is based in the Hillgrove Porter Stores pub so you get two for the price of one - amazing Japanese food and fantastic real / craft ales. Both top quality and can’t recommend enough!

We were lucky enough to stumble upon this place (currently tucked away in a lovely old English pub) after finding a deal in which we were able to taste the entire menu at a discount. Every single dish we had was incredible, and at such a reasonable price (even without the discount). It was great to taste some truly authentic Japanese dishes, unlike what you usually find in a typical commercial Japanese restaurant. There is something to cater for everyone, with plenty of vegan and vegetarian options too. The chef, Liam, came out to deliver our courses, and explained each one, why he liked it, and how he had chosen to prepare it. It is clear that he is very passionate about Japanese cooking, and after living there for many years, we can certainly taste it too! We will absolutely be visiting again - the only thing better than the food itself was the passion it was created with.

From the simple but lovely lotus root crisps to the succulent karaage chicken to the famous okonomiyaki, everything is just so good, and so authentic. This is a little bit of Japan right here in Bristol. We always look forward to their next pop up, and we always wish we could have just one more piece of chicken!

They have really made the effort to stay true to the street food in Japan. It's awesome to get some genuine, authentic Japanese food that sticks to the traditional ingredients and cooking methods.Me and my friends went along to The Hillsgrove (where Kansai Kitchen were doing their kitchen takeover) after being recommended and we weren't let down. Both chefs were happy to talk through ingredients and explain how and why the dishes are cooked the way they are. You can tell they've got a real passion for this cuisine!Amongst all things, it tasted incredible.

I tried Kansai Kitchen at St Nics Night Market in Bristol and it was the most authentic Okonomiyaki I've had outside Japan. After living in Japan for 3 years and returning to the UK it was an extremely tasty and good value surprise! The two guys running it know what they are doing and I hope they will be a permanent fixture on the Bristol scene!
