Came here to celebrate my partner and I’s anniversary and we had such a beautiful dinner here! Didn’t know what to expect as the reservation was kept as a surprise for me but from the moment we came in the staff were friendly and attentive, and I remember the vibe of the restaurant being fun and modern. The food was amazing, we got the soft shell crab, pork belly, broccolini, and ginger and sesame oil fried rice - all of which were my favourites of the night and I highly reccomend. We also got the salt and pepper squid and lamb chop which were also delicious and worth getting too but didn’t stand out to me the way the other dishes did. I don’t reccomend coming here and not getting a dessert though because the fun Asian twist on French desserts like the durian and salted caramel soufflé, and pandan and milo creme brûlée with coffee ice cream are so fun and delicious and really stand out compared to the other similar desserts I’ve had at other restaurants. Overall a really lovely time thanks to the delicious food and really lovely staff here, especially the amazing woman whose name I never got but she wore a green suit and was always fun to chat with whenever she came to check in on our table.

Dining at Kai was a treat, with several standout dishes. The sweet and sour pork was the best I’ve had—perfectly balanced in flavor and texture. The open bao appetizer was fantastic, and the coconut mango and durian ice creams were a memorable end to the meal. The cocktails were skillfully made and added to the experience. However, a few items felt overpriced, especially compared to other high-end spots. While the abalone, cocktails, and even plain rice didn’t quite justify their price tags, the overall quality and unique flavors make Kai worth a visit.

Kai Mayfair offers a pleasant atmosphere and decent food, but it falls short in both value and service. I ordered the General Tso's Chicken, which was crispy and nicely done, but the Wagyu dish left me disappointed. The portion size was tiny, especially for the steep price—definitely not what you'd expect for a one-star restaurant. The service was also lacking. Our waiter seemed irritated when we asked several questions about the menu, which dampened the overall experience. For the high prices, I was expecting more attentive service and better value. Overall, it wasn’t a terrible meal, but for what you pay, I expected a lot more. 2/5.

We had an amazing meal here on a special occasion. The soft shell crab to start with was perfectly light and crispy, with the nuts and mango topping complimenting it. The chilli lobster was wonderfully done as well, the sauce was fantastic and the crispy bread paired so well. The black pepper beef and the fried rice were also good, but didn't stand out as much as the other dishes did. The dessert was surprisingly our favourite part - the pandan crème brulé blended in so many flavours so well, from the Malaysian coffee ice cream to the milo powder, it all just worked amazingly together. Would definitely recommend this restaurant for a special occasion, especially the lunch menu. It's clear why they have maintained their Michelin star for so long.

This place has gone downhill since my last visit a few years ago. I ordered a chicken dish and the chicken was really over done and dry, I could have made better at home. They were also informed I was dairy free but for some reason they served me a special birthday dessert, I asked if it was dairy free and the checked and told me it wasn't and they told my partner to tell me what it tasted like. Honestly shocking for a Michelin starred restaurant. I will not return.

Firstly, the service here really is great. Theresa and Evan hosted us and were fantastic. Great engagement with customers but didn't interrupt the food either. The decor and atmosphere is also unmatched as it really is a beautiful restaurant inside. The food was good/very good and only really drops a star for value. I understand this is the epitome of fine dining but a few dishes, imo, weren't up to high standard of what I would expect. The prawns were all incredible, as was the sea bass, which genuinely melted in my mouth. The lamb chop however was a bit more disappointing, especially at £39. It is very easy to spend £100pp on a single (non-alcoholic) drink, a shared starter, a main each and a shared dessert. It was a wonderful experience but unsure I'd return or pay out of pocket for unless some dishes and their value improved a bit more. A largely halal menu also was greatly appreciated - only the wagyu and duck weren't halal with no alcohol hidden in other dishes.

A Truly Magnificent Experience at Kai Mayfair It is worthy of Michelin star it has earned. From the moment we stepped inside, we were enveloped in an atmosphere of elegance, with stunning decor that perfectly complements the culinary journey ahead. The service was impeccable, staff members were not only kind but also exceptionally attentive, ensuring that every detail of our meal was perfect. My favourite starter was salt/pepper Squid, tasted best wherever I have tried them. Barnsley lamb was top tier.Their warmth and professionalism added a personal touch to the entire dining experience. As for the food, it was simply extraordinary. Each dish was a masterpiece, showcasing an incredible balance of flavors and textures. The food and setting is superb. This is not the first time nor will it be the last time I eat in Kai. On this occasion the restaurant was let down by the lack of attention of the sommelier. We ordered wine (eventually) and every time we needed our glasses filled we had to ask a member of the serving team, not the service I would expect, if you don’t want to top up the glasses leave the bottle at the table. The poor experience with the wine was made up by the service of the assistant manager who we later found out likes to be hands on, if only her team were more like her.

I was so disappointed with the afternoon tea here that I sent an email to the team, despite giving them a week to respond, they haven't bothered to do so, therefore, I will post the email below to identify all of the issues. It is definitely not worth wasting money on, I have no idea how they have managed to hold a Michelin star for 15 years and have won various accolades in that time... This wasn't the experience we received. "When we arrived it took a while for anyone to acknowledge us. We were shown to our table next to your bathrooms and left for a while until our server came and explained the champagne options etc. The food selection was unceremoniously dumped in the middle of the table and we were told that our server would be over shortly to introduce the food. At this point, I will say, that our server, who was a lady, was wonderful, polite, friendly and helpful, the food looked great and the concept is fantastic, but in actual fact it's thoroughly disappointing. To continue with the problems... The vegetable bao smelt vile and tasted very unpleasant. The duck egg was sloppy and inedible. The chocolate bird biscuit was very underwhelming and quite possibly stale. My wife described the money cake as like eating a wet sock and the jellied flower as like eating an eyeball. Revolting. The creme brulé was overcooked and resembled scrambled eggs. The other savouries were ok, but let me stress only ok, you hold a Michelin star and therefore we were expecting Michelin star worthy food, which none of this was. A thoroughly underwhelming experience and a complete waste of time and money. We left you having spent £150 on food that I would have preferred not to have paid for... I can't even put a value to what I would have been happy to pay, it was that bad. We were still hungry, so we went and paid for yet more food elsewhere... Is that really what you're striving for? For guests to leave you angry, disappointed and hungry?"

We have been to Kai now a few times and every single time we thought that it was excellent. The food is excellent - there are way too many great dishes on the menu. We already had a few times the duck with the pancakes which is out of this world. Service in the restaurant is very friendly but also of a certain standard. The dish portions are pretty generous and every time our waiter has warned us that we were ordering too much food. Seems normal but in many restaurants they wouldn't care. I used to love dining at Kai but my last two experiences were just not great when it came to service- what happened yesterday was just terrible, myself and my partner came from outside london and got caught in the protests, I called Kai to let them know we were running 15 mins late (in the grace period) and was told the kitchen was closing (it didn’t make sense cause why offer a booking at a time were there is only 15 mins to choose from the menu) I then asked if I could give my order over the phone as I knew the menu well and they have my info/ card details from open table and we were told no. So so disappointed- luckily we were outside Nobu who accommodated us straight away and we had a fantastic afternoon- I will NOT be returning it’s not what it used to be.

The arrogant, standoffish service grates. The food being just very average disappoints. The fact that the only standout element is the stupidly expensive price point makes you angry. I came here before and it was wonderful when there was actually Chinese management.Unfortunately , it is turned into a very racist establishment with horrible people that are servers. Not only were they incredibly rude but did not honor our reservation & tried to charge us. The manager a white older man, was racist and mistreated us horribly. The level of distress we had to face was unexpected and unnecessary. We called and asked them for changes and a delay in time due to our experience of our horrible car accident but in person everything was denied and not honored. Come here If you're white. Otherwise there are countless Michelin starred Chinese restaurants in London you can go to. Wilhem is incredibly racist and incredibly rude. He was not only horrific but insulted our ethnicity even though one if us was from China. They only support a certain type of rich elite and even though we had the means, we were treated like second class citizens, worse like property. It has been the most jarring experience I have ever been through and the saddest. Go to Core instead. Or literally even side street vendors because they won't treat you like trash. Shame on you all.

We had the worst service ever in my whole entire life at this restaurant, I cannot recall worst service than this, even your corner kebab shop will probably give you a better service. We arrived at 8pm and we tried to order cosmopolitan, the first waitress that came said she doesn't know what that is, then she sent someone else and this guy came and I requested a cosmopolitan, he said he doesn't know what that is and can only take food order. We specifically said that we would like to get a drink first before ordering our starters. He said he will send another staff member who will take the drinks order and he insisted we order starters with him, we said atkeast about 3 to 4 times that please bring our drinks before the starters. Then a third waitress came and took my drinks order. Out food came in next 10 minutes by 8:20 and our drinks didn't come, they kept saying it's coming. Also, there was only 3 waiters servicing the diners in the basement area so you would hardly see any waiter around if you need anything. I literally had to get up everytime I needed the attention of a waiter. Anyway, so this was now 8:45 and we still were waiting for our drinks , our starters were finished as otherwise they would have gone cold. By this time I was pretty upset and getting angry, I had to again get off my seat to get the attention of a waiter and I then demanded to speak to the manager as 45 minutes to get a cosmopolitan is unacceptable. The manager just kept apologising and saying we will offer the cosmo on the house, I said I would have rather paid and get it in time This spoilt our whole experience. To top it all up, the waitress who took my drinks order forgot which bottle of wine we ordered that we wanted with our mains. We didn't expect such service from a Michelin rated restaurant. The background music in the restaurant kept cutting off as well, so there would be like silence for quite some time which spoils the whole ambience.

Service was amazing, you could tell that the staff really prided themselves on wanting you to have the best experience and that it mattered to them, they also brought an extra little desert for my wife’s birthday, and actually gave an extra portion of it when we finished it which they didn’t have to. The food was overall very good, but somewhat inconsistent, some dishes were incredible (chicken cashew, crispy aromatic duck, prawn toast and beef starters) but others disappointing (lobster essence noodles were the biggest letdown, appeared to be basic noodles boiled in a lobster broth, but I had expected something more. 80% of the pork belly was extremely tender and delicious, with an incredible sauce, but the other 20% was a little dry and overall I wished I’d gone for the sweet and sour pork instead). There’s quite a lot of hype about this restaurant and some of food certainly lived up to the hype. The wasabi prawns were just delicious. The duck starter and main was good but not amazing and the duck brain was an odd offering that they served with a wry smile as if to say ‘I dare you’. The salt and pepper squid was nice but unremarkable and the Chilean Sea Bass was also good. Steamed rice is steamed rice and the long life noodles were nice enough but also unremarkable The desserts were interesting but looked prettier than they tasted. What wasn’t great is that the staff started hoovering and clanging plates and cutlery before our desserts were even served as if to say it’s home time soon and we were largely ignored until the bill arrived when we were chatted up in a rather unsubtle attempt to gain an uplift on the service charge. The sommelier was good and the wine we ordered was nice. I was glad I went but I think it’s ticked off the list and I probably wouldn’t bother returning. Stalwarts like Yauatcha and Hutong will see me returning again and again for delicious food at more reasonable prices rather than returning to Kai. I think Kai is possibly more suited to companies hosting clients on their expense account and both would leave feeling they chose well.

We were curious about what we definitely should have and about what was meant by the duck offerings, he said some things, and we said we would have a think and he left us. We planned to order some white wine to have with some fish starters, then some red wine to have with our mains. The next time we saw the waiter, two of the starters we talked about turned up with him. One was the wasabi prawns, and one was the yellow tail ceviche - which is what we wanted so great but we didn't actually order them, nor did we get the wine. After we finished the starters, my wife loved the prawns, I thought both things were OK, we ordered our mains and sides. We got the black bean beef (Wagyu) and the lamb. Both were OK but the Wagyu at £102 was definitely not worth the extra £70. We also got the broccolini, the aubergine and the garlic - too much food but we wanted to be wowed and experience what they did. They were all fine. They brought us the desert menu after the mains, we asked for recommendations, they said a little bit and left us to it. It must have been 10 minutes after they brought us the menus that we ordered the Durian desert and the creme brulee, then they told us that the durian fruit dessert took 25 minutes. Again, they were both fine, apart from the coffee ice cream with the creme brulee which was exceptional. We both ordered desert wines, the Banyuls and the Chinese Ice Wine, the waiter poured the ice wine and there was only a half glass, they spent the next 10 minutes looking for another bottle, but couldn't find one. He gave us that one the house. All in all the meal was OK, if it had cost £120 we would both have been satisfied, it was over £420. I have eaten in a couple of dozen Michelin Starred restaurants and for this one to be put on a par with Cail Bruich, L'Orangerie, Number One, Nomicos, Bardal (it had one when I went, not two) is doing those places a real injustice.

Afternoon tea with a twist. Grade A service and the tea and food (with a great Asian twist) was perfect. Just go!

I should have known looking at the pictures of the food online. All that fancy plating is often a sign of a restaurant’s need to impress if the food doesnt. But a Michelin Star Chinese restaurant always needs to be tried. Walking in I had the second negative signal. The restaurant decor is so tacky that calling it “90s style” would be a compliment. The pork was extremely tough, the sauce basic china town cuisine. The chicken way too sweet. Full of MSG which I don’t even mind that much when going to the local spot but had hoped a michelin star restaurant would steer away from. After we finished, the waiter asked for our feedback. I pointed out that the meat had been too tough. In the US one would at least get a dessert offered in return. Here: nada. Go to China Tang or Imperial Chinese instead!

We had lunch at the Kai. All the dishes we enjoyed were very good. Particularly outstanding were the whole turbot, squid and A5 Wagyu. A look at the wine list is also recommended. The entire staff was very attentive, always helpful and courteous.

I have been a lot of times, and this time I was a little disappointed. The waitress wasn’t very kind. The food came in 3 minutes. Unfortunately the worst time.

Food is always good at Kai! They also have an very good wine list and the staff is quite knowledgable about food and wine parings. One of my favorite "go to" London restaurants.

I went there because a colleague recommended it, but it wasn't delicious at all. Makes me want to sprinkle some chicken soup base on it. Well, it's perfect for London

Ordering it online doesn’t work. Tried it lots of times and they make me wait 2 hours and they end up not delivering the food. Terrible service.

Excellent menu, food beautifully cooked and presented, flavourful and unusual combinations. Service somewhat uninterested, an error with a dessert order not apologised for and correct item arrived very late. But I will not be back, because the lovely food can't compensate for having to suffer loud, bland club bpm music for the entire lunchtime service. A shame.
