Kahuna in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Went here on Wednesday evening 18/9/2024 1 hour before my booking with my wife and 14 month old daughter . Luckily they said it was fine for me to come in early,we were seated and a high chair was brought for my daughter. Me and my wife placed our orders for the 3 of us and was very pleased that the front of house team did their best to interact with our daughter who started to get frustrated from lack of sleep during our day out and keep her occupied whilst we were eating our starters and her eating from the kids menu. Now the food was great ,flavorful,fresh , colorful, citrus,some spice but not overpowering, sweetness everything you could ask for in Thai cuisine and the front of house attention to detail and behaviour when dealing with a baby who wanted to cry the walls down was spot in the way they handled the whole situation . so a great thank you to them . Sadly we had to take our mains asap as a takeaway and enjoy at home because we didn't want to disturb the rest of the guests. So what makes my review worth taking with a pinch of salt in regards to food and service Let me try to explain as briefly as possible Me and my wife have been working in the hospitality industry for nearly 18 years me as a chef in the top 3 restaurants in the world as well as 5* hotels,private member's clubs and Michelin star restaurants and my wife the f&b manager of top 5* hotels and Michelin star restaurants. So please if you love Asian, Thai and oriental cuisine take it from us and give it a try and hopefully you'll be greatly pleased with what kahuna has on offer as we were. Hopefully in the future we will revisit and give a much more in-depth review of the food, service and decor but for now Thank you

Take away ready when scheduled. Friendly greeting. Fair price. Decor looked great. Food was amazing. Hot. Full of flavour. Plenty of it. Would def go again. Sad it will be closing in September having only just found it.

Had red curry with special meats, partner had bibimbap. It all looked nice but Red curry far too creamy and thick to the point of sickening and the chicken and prawns were chewy. Starter of spring rolls were bland but shrimp gyoza was fairly decent. But certainly overall disappointing. staff were pleasant.

Visited this place the other night for dinner, and I can safely say I was very pleased. The food was very nice, and was served quickly considering it was pretty busy. Service is very friendly too, and overall the atmosphere in there is very authentic and cosy. Would recommend!

The food is insanely overpriced for what it is. I don’t recommend it at all. Go somewhere cheaper with better quality food. The teriyaki tempeh tasted like cardboard. The green curry was alright, but nothing you couldn’t have gotten cheaper from a more authentic takeaway.

Terrible customer service came in Wednesday please avoid this place

Visited for an early evening meal, all staff excellent, we liked it that the tables were not crammed close together, it was cool with the big front windows open on a warm day. Excellent crackers and dips, two very tasty Thai curries, very generous portions.

Delicious food, great vegan options. Yes, the food takes 45 minutes but it’s all fresh and delicious.

Bibimbap was not authentic, pad thai was too sweet. Quite pricey for what they were. The interior and atmosphere of the restaurant was nice.

Unfortunately this is not a good review from us as we were hugely disappointed especially after reading some great reviews. The service was poor as the lady that served us was very rude and made us feel very unwelcome even though we had placed a collection order. The atmosphere wasn't very pleasant in there at all, almost a sense of awkwardness. Needless to say we were relieved we weren't eating in. Food wise we were really excited to get stuck in as it smelt great from the bag on the walk back. When we got home and opened it the squid smelt super fishy and not right. The Thai curry and Massaman were quite bland and the chicken was chewy. The Nasi Goreng was very different to any I'd ever had before and lacked in flavour and traditional Indonesian spices. We also had bad tummies for 2 days. The best part of our meal were the spring rolls and the walk home. Waste of £57.

This is probably the worst pad Thai l have ever had in my life. The food is not good at all. It is not worth the money at all. Definitely do not recommend

Absolutely incredible food, friendly happy staff, a wonderful dining experience.

Overall it was a good experience! Each dish below is rated with a maximum of 5 points. The price/performance ratio is not very high, and only two servings of staple food are enough for one person. 1️⃣Pad Thai🌟🌟🌟🌟 The ingredients are okay, but the rice noodles are really scarce. At the end of the meal, there was still meat but no rice noodles🥹 2️⃣The shrimp crackers are delicious! 5 pounds serving🌟🌟🌟🌟 The accompanying sauce is also good👍 3️⃣The squid is very delicious, and the plate is empty as soon as it comes. 🌟🌟🌟🌟 Only 5 + 3 slices of pickles for 9 pounds. It would be better if the price was higher but a full plate was available. Otherwise, a small piece of squid weighing nearly 2 pounds is really a bit expensive. 4️⃣Red curry, unfortunately not soup. 🌟🌟🌟 It would feel better if it was thinner. If you like soup, it would also be nice to make a curry soup! 5️⃣Korean bibimbap. I really don’t recommend this! 🌟 The Thai style is still good. This is just vegetables and rice. There is really too little sauce. Even if I order another portion, it is not enough to mix with the rice. The rice does not use the stone pot, it is completely unauthentic, so it is not recommended! So the overall quantity is too small, so the price/performance ratio is not high! But it tastes really good! Finally barely full for two people, 71.5 pounds.

I had Mi Goreng fried rice with special meat. The taste was great and very close to original mi goreng. The prawns were fresh and not overcooked. The whole dish was perfect and would definitely recommend this. My boyfriend tried bibimbap but it was not authentic enough.

Korean Gochujang pork ribs and egg fried rice is highly recommended.

GREAT FIND Rocked up over bank holiday weekend without a booking (ideally I would suggest to book here) super friendly staff managed to accommodate table for 2. Obviously popular with take outs being collected throughout our stay. Great service from all staff. Menu is just the right size, plenty to choose from but not a mind bender. Wife and I had prawn toasts, crispy seaweed, prawn Ramen and chilli beef but could easily have chosen most dishes off the menu. Food came out of the kitchen in good time and was all hot. Generous portion sizes, my wife didn't manage to finish hers. Good vibe, great decor, 2 sides, 2 mains and 3 drinks for less than £70, you'll struggle to do better. Yes like anther reviewer says there is some damp/staining on the toilet ceiling, but the room itself was clean and would in no uncertain terms stop me from BOOKING and visiting again.

This was a very mixed experience. The positives.. amazing main course, great red curry and sticky rice, friendly waiter, good sized portions. The negatives… weeping tiger was not rare, squid was chewy, service was very slow and had to keep asking for things like water glasses, serving spoons. The noise level was deafening so we had to shout in each others ears. The mouldy ceiling in the toilets is very off putting. Coconut tequila was not to our taste.

Popped in early for dinner without a reservation. The service was very helpful and also pointed out if something was very spicy, thanks! Food was great, really enjoyed it. The Pad Thai had a wonderful taste, and the yellow curry was nice and creamy. Too bad they do not serve cocktails..will try to go back during this vacation. Highly recommended and not expensive for the quality.

Amazing service, it was our first visit.. but after such a wonderful meal and fantastic service last Saturday… Our meals arrived promptly, we were extremely pleased and the delicious dessert Mmmmmmm I felt awful for the young waitress that was spoken to abruptly for absolutely no reason and she didn’t deserve it.

The food was really tasty, very fresh. The waitress’s were lovely.

They accidentally double-booked our table so we were sent away for 30 minutes but once we had our table, the service was fantastic and the food delicious.

Service is always good, the food was not as good compared to previous visits. Seems to be getting more expensive too, especially the wine!

The menu was excellent - a great variety that caters for all dietary requirements with good vegetarian and vegan options. We had Edamame to start, which had a tasteful kick to it) and I had yellow curry (pic) The food was well presented and was probably of the best Thai food I’ve had (and I love Thai) I highly recommend Kahuna. Great experience all way around.

Loveliest Pad Thai I’ve had in the UK

We had Ramen, Chili Beef & Thai Red Curry all really quite good & authentic & to be recommended but not enough rice!

Honestly, the best Asian food I have ever tasted. Highly recommend the Rendang. Not sure why there is no beef on the menu here though, I am told that beef Rendang is better. So, the search is now on for a beef Rendang in Cornwall. An elusive beast!!

Not sure what the hype is about… We visited after being recommended by multiple people and seeing glowing reviews online. It was nothing above average. Basic looking restaurant (not aesthetic like it looks online) toilets were very dangerous and didn’t close or you’d get trapped in! Greeted by a rude lady who was too busy on her phone when we walked in and didn’t raise her head to greet us. Waitress was okay but hardly spoke. Took our food & drink order awkwardly by just staring at us not even asking. Never checked to see if our food was okay. At the end of the meal we hadn’t even asked for the bill and she put the card machine in our face! We still had 45 minutes left on our table but they couldn’t be quicker to hurry us out! Food was good but way over priced! I had the Tempeh Korean Bibimbap which was £17 for some greasy tempeh, plain rice, stale Asian salad & an egg. Overall very average, glad we went to see what it was about but we won’t be back again 😊

Great owners, lovely chilled atmosphere, the food is incredible. So much flavour and the portions are an excellent size. Highly recommended food location in Newquay by my partner and I. Be sure to book a couple of days in advance as they are a busy restaurant, I can see why.

Kahuna serves deliciously tender pork ribs and a flavorful rendang curry that together create a delightful dining experience.

Geschmacklich war das Abendessen im Kahuna eines der besten, was ich jemals bei einem Thai erleben durfte. Es ist jetzt vollkommen nachvollziehbar, dass man bei spontanen Besuchen mit hoher Wahrscheinlichkeit keinen Tisch zum Essen bekommt. Der Service war freundlich, aufmerksam und sehr hilfsbereit. Kahuna ist eine absolute Empfehlung.

All the reviews are really good and thought we would try it. Starter amazing but the mains just were not up to the standard of the starters over cooked hard rice in both Nasi Goreng and the Pad Thai. Sadly it just wasn’t what I would expect for the price we paid for it.

Incredible. I would have never thought to have found the best Thai in Newquay. The flavour is just banging and full of aroma. We ordered the green & red curry and the chicken was super tender.

I rarely got out of my way to write a negative review. The food took 2h to be delivered (not their fault, of course). Perhaps that's why the rice was microwaved, but still the pad thai was vile (terrible smell and poor taste) and the jackfruit in it tasted like raw chicken. Perhaps taken out of the freezer in a rush? Not willing to give a second chance.

As someone that has lived in Asia for twenty plus years I found some of the dishes not authentic.But to most people I'm sure this food is amazing. And it was only the odd dish I had an issue with. If you are a seasoned Asian food conisseur maybe go somewhere else 😄

We have started bringing all our visitors to dine in at The Kahuna in Newquay as this is our favourite restaurant of all times. My son summed it up last night by saying "This takes Thai food to a new level" and for someone who has travelled around the world this is high praise. Won't go anywhere else now we have been so spoilt. Lovely place, lovely food and great service.

Freshest Thai Red Curry I have ever had

Very nice Thai food that tasted as authentic as you can get it outside of Thailand, great service with attention to detail. If we're coming back to Newquay, we'll definitely eat here again!

We came last year and had the beef rendang and prawn toast, talked about it all year , so when we came back to Newquay had the same, we were apprehensive incase it didn't live up to expectations, had the same amazing meal, great staff, you get a lot of food for your money. Highly reccomended.

Came here last minute and they kindly got us seats at the bar. The food was incredible and we ate every bite! The food tasted fresh; my only qualm is the use of egg noodles in the pork ramen. The broth was incredibly rich still, and the pork was so tender!

First ever visit tonight. It was absolutely amazing, food was fresh and hot, looked great and tasted even better. Next time I am in Newquay for work I will definitely be coming back here as my first choice for evening meal!

Vor allem fie vegetarischen Frühlingsrollen, das Chili Tofu, Chili Beef und die Coconut Pawns können wir weiterempfehlen. Die Preise sind für das gute Essen absolut gerechtfertigt. Wir kommen gerne wieder.

I'm Asian and can definitely say that their food is not Asian! I guess their definition of fusion is Asian names with European looks & taste. I knew right away when I saw their ramen soup that this would be a disappointment and it was. I couldn't eat it. The Weeping Tiger wasn't much better either. If you are Asian and/or know authentic Asian cuisine, do not go there. I was also very surprised by their £30 minimum value for click & collect orders. I get it for deliveries but not for click & collect. I will still give it two stars because staff were nice and the restaurant decor was pretty.

Amazing food! Beautiful Indonesian dishes! As a chef my self. I've cooked most of what's on the menu. Some of my favourite foods. This place does it so well! Amazing dim sum! So tasty! Awesome value for money! Must try! Pad Thai was okay. We had the veggi version and was okay. Some strange smells coming from the tofu and tempeh. But was still good experience.

Kahuna Thai Restaurant exceeded my expectations with their flavorful Pad Thai and delicious Chicken Satay. The Pad Thai had a perfect balance of sweet and tangy flavors, while the Chicken Satay was tender and accompanied by a rich peanut sauce. The restaurant's ambiance was inviting, and the staff provided excellent service. I highly recommend Kahuna Thai for an authentic and enjoyable Thai dining experience.

Very pleased with our visit to Kahuna. Service was friendly and quick, and the food was quite flavorful! For a starter, we had the Weeping Tiger, which was awesome. The sauce that came with it was SUPER spicy but very dynamic. I mostly ate it without the spicy sauce, and it was still great. I had the Asian Beef Rendang, and my husband had the Pork Ramen. Portion sizes were generous, and we left with extra! The Rendang was a little spicy, but not overwhelming - it had the perfect amount of spice (I have a low spice tolerance for reference). Very complex flavors and perfectly cooked rice to go with it - heaven on a plate. The pork ramen was good, but we wish the noodles had been more flavorful. We suspect the noodles might have not had time to sit and absorb the broth - maybe they were added last? The ramen’s broth was flavorful and all the other elements, but just not the noodles themselves. The restaurant is very clean and modern - decorations and plating are beautiful. Lots of different options for food on their menu - both appetizers and mains. Would happily go again, there’s so many different and very interesting dishes to try!

As a party of 3 I reserved a table for 3 at 17.30 just after opening. I researched Kahuna on the net beforehand and was happy to go there from what I read. The food was exceptional. I have not have had better food in any restaurant it was that tasty. Will eat there again.

Excellent food ambience and service.

Absolutely delicious! I tried to chili tofu and it was the beat tofu I have ever had. I had the tempe starter which was gorgeous too. The main was good value for money, but even though the starter was delicious, there was only 3 tiny bits of tempe which cost 9 pound. Could give a little more for 9 quid. Other than that, beautiful food

This is by far the best asian cuisine restaurant i have been too. The taste and presentation is unparalleled. Excellent service and attention to detail by the host makes the experience even better
