Booked Jolly Carter Little Lever to celebrate friends 75th birthday on Saturday 25th November. Told that the food could run out so be early. Booked table for nine at 5pm. Sat talking and deciding what to have. After a while the waitress came to take order . Several things were missing. Easier to tell us what they had rather than deciding and keep changing. By six thirty meals started to appear. Ninety minutes wait! Mine was still missing. Along came the manager who informed us that the table would be needed by seven as they had a party of forty two coming in. After complaining that we had been waiting for ninety minutes my meal arrived and told that our booking should never have been taken. How to make customers welcome. next step was the waitress telling us that she had set another table up for us elsewhere. Asked for the manager again and told him we were not happy with the service we hadn't received. We decided that we would take our birthday cake which was in the kitchen and go to Tesco and buy ice cream and go home. Warmer reception at home. Never again will we step inside the Jolly Carter. Such a shame . Pubs are shutting down and to be honest the ones that are left need to get their acts together otherwise we wont have any places left .

Went with my dad and a friend. We had a drink and the lady who served us was extremely friendly. I noticed the regulars were known by name. My dad spilled his drink and within seconds a towel arrived to clear up and he was reassured it wasn't a problem. We went with our dog and she can be a bit hyper but she was brought some bikkies, which was a lovely touch. I had the fish and chips and it was delicious. The fish was huge. We all enjoyed our meals. We'll definitely be going back.

The Jollys is my local and I will always go in there for a drink but as far as the food goes I will certainly not be bothering again! Went in tonight to treat my son for his birthday and all I can say is the food we ordered was passible but nothing exciting and lacked in flavour. My boys left their curry as it was full of hard onions which they were trying to pick out. Mine and my husbands burgers were ok and we ate them but for the prices they are charging you would expect gourmet cuisine! A bit disappointing to say the least 🤦🏻♀️

Cottage pie; was chicken and mushroom with a very thin topping of veg. Didnt eat the cottage pie. So decided i would have a dessert. Jam roly poly; suet part was good but why did it have three dollops of jam on it and a strawberry on top? Overall the meal was a wasye of money. Staff were very nice.

Chess as ever, venue the working mens club near here. As usual I involve trains wherever possible. I arrived at Moses Gate station about 2 miles from the venue. There is a bus, route 524. Of course it's a long while since a train ran between here and Radcliffe. I walked the 2 miles along the busy main road to Little Lever. This pub is the first place you trip over, a welcome Inn for the weary traveller. . A well presented pub with a big restaurant area. seven pm on a Wednesday so not busy, I found a table near a plug so could recharge my phone, as well as me! I went for a 'pub classic' - beef curry, as I've had too many chips recently. A bonus is I didn't have to have the "does 'hand cut' chips mean unpeeled chips" conversation. The waitress suggested adding a Nan bread. I also had a pint of 'Bitter and twisted', a nice real ale. Reasonable price at £15.50 for the lot.

Felt very unwelcome we finished our meal and left. Young lad was very attentive older woman seemed she didn’t want to help in anyway. Food was average.

To celebrate our Anniversary we decided to try the Jolly Carter's and we were not disappointed. The service was excellent, efficient, helpful but not intrusive. We had the pate and garlic mushrooms to start and both were lovely, extremely tasty and portion size perfect. For mains I had the lasagne and my husband had the stuffed chicken, again both were delicious. Very reasonable prices and a lovely airy light dining room. After our meal we decided to have a drink in the bar and on learning it was our anniversary the owners bought us a celebratory drink which was extremely kind of them and a lovely touch. The Jolly's is our local pub and we are always impressed with the friendly service and excellent beers and now can add excellent food to the list. This initially started as a review of a bad response to a complaint about tiny position size but while feeling that annoyed I was typing a review in the pub to post as I left, the aggressive response of the landlord lead to me wanting to step back and write a new review after calming down. I can honestly say I’ve never had anything like it in any restaurant. We went as a group of 4 families. Two of us ordered pasta dishes and one ordered fish pie. Although most of the courses looked fine, these three dishes were barely the size of starters. I have never seen portions that small for a main course! Two were pasta dishes served in oval ramekin type bowls that were around 6-7” by about 4” (wish I’d taken a picture to show but at the time the whole thing wasn’t such a big issue). When I mentioned to the owner the response was “Well no-one has ever said that before” rather than politely dealing with the complaint. What followed was a heated conversation that wasn’t warranted or reasonable. It was a fair complaint and not intended to create confrontation. Not sure this was the right response in the situation! We’ve eaten here many times over the years (possible more under previous owners although our friends are regulars) and portions in the past have never been an issue. I’m not a big eater but these portions were just tiny compared to any other pasta dish I’ve ever had. The landlady did say the 2 pasta dishes would be removed from the bill without us asking for this which was appreciated but was also the only suitable response in this situation and shouldn’t have been dealt with in such an argumentative and defensive manner.

We went to celebrate my mother-in-law's 90th Birthday. We were a table of 15 but pre-ordered 14 meals as one child didn't need a meal. When I placed the order, the waitress did read back but I had said have you got 14 meals she said yes. We did receive the starters at the time booked but only 3 had starters starters. The main courses were served 45 mins later....when I asked at 35 min were we getting the food as I had specifically said we needed my mother in law to her meal on time. The waitress said" well you got your starters at the time you ordered, and they had other people who had come in so they were doing their best."When we highlighted that one meal was missing she said she would go and get it and then came back and said that I hadn't ordered it and that she had personally taken the order when i pre-ordered no apology when I said well I ask you did you have 14 meals written down you said yes. Her tone all the time was that it was our fault that we got the starters on time but not the rest of the meals and that one meal was missing. ( which also took an age to arrive) No acknowledgement either of a lady's 90th , Other people around us also seem to be waiting a long time for their food. I will say that the quality of the food was ok, wouldn't say brilliant but ok. I do believe that they have a too adventurous menu and maybe that is why the kitchen can't cope, also there wasn't enough staff. We were going to order sweets but decided it would be quicker to go to Tesco to get our own. Will not be returning.

Been coming here for years, always a bit hit and miss, as the management is always changing. However, the last few visits have been good. This has now been completely spoiled, because I had the temerity to ask for a bread roll. My wife and I, have just had a really nice 2 course meal and a bottle of wine, starters of asparagus wrapped in Parma ham with a poached egg, delicious. And a prawn cocktail, which was good, followed by a very good pasta dish, and I had the Lamb casserole from the specials menu. The casserole was fabulous, there was a lot of very nice gravy, and came with a warm roll. The roll though, was quite small and no where near enough to mop up the gravy. I asked the waitress if I could possibly have another roll, she went off to get me one, (the service, by the way, was as good as the food) but came back to tell me, I could have another bread roll, but would be charged a further £1. UNBELEIVABLE. I said I would pay the pound, but, I would never come back again, and I won't. I have come here about once a month, and spent on average, about £50 per visit, tonight's bill, including the £1 for the small bread roll was £46 ish, so, around £600 per annum. I can't imagine the bread roll has cost more than 20 pence, therefore, I can't believe how petty this charge is.

I rang in the afternoon to ask what time last orders for food were - I was told 8pm. So we arrived at 7.30pm to be told that food orders would not be taken!!! So having checked the times with the venue, not having been advised that it might be advisable to book a table or that the kitchen would refuse to take orders and having paid for a taxi there I was less than impressed. So don't waste your time here. Ended up going to La Piazza Bolton which was fabulous. I've only given one star because there's no option for zero.

My steak had been frozen and then thawed as, although it was medium rare, it was as dry as card board. My partners chicken burger was equally as dry and both servings of chips were over done. I've worked in catering before and suspect the chips were left over and then reheated. Mustard sauce was nice and nice pub itself, just the food is a let down. Drinks were ordered pre dinner and had to remind staff after twenty minutes that we were ready to order food. Main courses were OK, in particular the Sea Bass, superb.Main courses over we asked for Dessert, only to be told that the kitchen had closed at 8pm,. There was no mention of this from the staff and this was also not mentioned on the menu. Disgraceful..do the owners not want to sell food?My wife then asked for the bill and was told that an itemised bill was not available until payment had been made..must be some local commercial business practise having never heard of this before.Eventually got a bill and asked if I could speak to the manager.., told that nobody was available.Overall 4/10. 1 for the restaurant and the other three for the friendly other customers.

Pub, very nice, attentive polite staff, however the Sunday carvery was not as expected having read the reviews. The roast beef looked very succulent on the board, pink and moist but it was as tough as old boots and didn't taste of anything. The selection of vegetables was minimal, roast and mash potatoes, lumpy carrot and swede and red cabbage. NO GREENS. A roast isn't a roast without greens in my opinion. The gravy was very strange, very sweet and no meat flavour at all. A group of four were sat near us who filled their plates up and like us, left most of it. For a Bank Holiday Sunday the restaurant section was very quiet, perhaps this reflects something?? Won't be using the restaurant section again.

This is a new improved review. We visited more than 12 months ago and it was not in my opinion good. I believe the jolly. has changed hands and when we visited recently it was fabulous. The food was to die for. Scampi lovely and fresh , home cooked chips , cheese and onion pie was lovely. The staff were friendly and efficient. We will visit again and on a regular basis. It's all good.

The jolly is our local where the food since Chris and Steve took over is fabulous, very reasonably priced with more than ample proportions. The menu is extensive and the presentation is wonderful, so much so we took our wedding guests there on Tuesday. To our surprise they had decorated the tables with balloons and wedding confetti which was a perfect touch for our special day. We would like to thank Chris, Steve and all the staff for making our special day even more special. Would highly recommend. Anne and David

We have been visitors the 'The Jolly' for many many years and have seen management come and go and most of them have failed and the food been dire but since Chris took over the pub and restaurant have quite obviously benefited from his leadership. The Sunday carvery is on a par with a good old home cooked Sunday lunch, sometimes the meat could be better quality but the cauliflower cheese is amazing as is the cheese pie (veggie option). We always enjoy our meals and we are a family with children ranging from 2 to 8, the staff are very friendly and patient with the children which really makes a huge difference. The restaurant is always nice and busy and the if the quality of service and food continue as they are then I can see it being very successful compared to previous management.Service is good and the prices fair.

I booked a buffet for 50 with Chris the food was excellent and all the staff were very helpful and attentive nothing was too much trouble, we were made very welcome especially as it had been a very difficult day we were given the conservatory for our private function and the room was set out excelently for our needs. All the guests commented on the amount of food and the excellent quality. I cannot thank Chris and Steve enough. Thank you from Kath Wilcock and Family.

I hadn't visited the Jolly for many years but decided to try the Sunday lunch based on reviews posted on Trip Advisor. The only food available was the Sunday carvery and, as such, I am unable to comment on other food from the menu. There was a choice of three different meats on offer, which were very tasty. However, there was only three veg on offer plus roast and mashed potatoes. I would have preferred a greater choice of veg. The carvery was reasonably priced but rather average/basic.

There was 13 of us there to celebrate a birthday, we went on a Sunday which was the Carvery. you had a choice of two size plates, Standard or Large, on the Standard you received two very large slices of your selection of meat, Large you had a choice of three large slices of meat. All of the vegetables were nice and hot, to accompany the meal was a good selection of sauces i.e. Horseradish, Canberra etcetera. all in all a very nice experience and I would recommend it

Great pub run by a really nice couple. Able to have a laugh whilst still servicing the business side of the venture.Carvery is second to none, and the staff in general are highly welcoming and attentive to an empty glass.Food outside the carvery(on the standard menu) is brilliant, with an individual style put on the new menu. Would recommend to both couples and people working away. This is an all-round pub that suits people who just want a drink with the football, as well as those who fancy a good meal. Long may it continue to thrive.

We have been going to this pub for a few quite drinks for many years and have been disappointed in the past with the quality of the food and have always said this pub could be a gold mine if the food was up to a better standard well I am so delighted to say I can now at last eat my words. the NEWS couple who have taken over have overhauled the menu and boy is it amazing. So good we have eaten there 3 times in two weeks and every time leave with a feeling of wanting more. I've tried the Lamb Koftas which melted in the mouth the just the right amount of heat added and the fresh focaccia beard was sooo soft. Hubby had homemade burger and it arrived on a block board and was handmade beef. We went in for the carvery and it was the best carvery we have tried locally maybe because all the food was fresh all the veg was hot, well cooked but especially made fresh ( not a frozen piece in sight thank god) and brothers law said the sea bass with caper was to die for so all in all not only does the food taste good but the presentation of it all is amazing. I will def be recommending this little hidden gem and won't be happy until I,ve tasted all the menu even finding excuses to plan next outing midweek much to the hubby's delight. New owners are a breath of fresh air just what the jolly Carter needed.

There were six in our party and we all had different meals and all agreed that they were excellent, except for the black puddings which were hard. The BBQ ribs of mine were some of the best I have tasted - do try them! The staff were very helpful although they were very busy. The restaurant has a very good ambience. We will go again..

This pub has always had really good beer but the food at best was mediocre. It has now changed hands again and the village now has a sterling little pub with excellent beer and excellent food. Now all we need to do is to keep them here; keep up the excellent work thanks!

It's the first time we've been for a long time as the food really went down hill. Since it's recent take over it seems to have greatly improved. We had the Sunday carvery which was really very tasty. Had a good chat to the chef who was serving, really friendly. Big thumbs up, will definitely go back .

Living locally, we were keen to try the food once the pub had been taken over by new management. It had been quite poor historically and we were pleasantly surprised. The landlord is the chef, and a funky new menu is now on offer. With a range of grills, fish, burgers and home comforts, the quality is definitely improved. We enjoyed steak n chips after a chorizo starter (my partner had a black pudding tower which he also enjoyed). Food is excellent value for money and was pleased to see other diners enjoying their meals. Would recommend
