A lovely place to visit when on our annual holiday to North Devon. My decaf latte was one of the best I’ve ever tasted. Pedant that I am though, we always question and guffaw over the missing apostrophe in “Johns”. Found two other apostrophe errors on other signage too. Please tell me I’m not the only person to notice this…! :-)

Great shop in Instow and cafe. I love to buy their tarts, pasties and desserts. The steak pasty and cheese and onion are delicious. I have noticed though that the pasties are smaller than they used to be and the pastry much thicker, too much. But disappointed, probably won’t recommend those. I do love the quiches and particularly the walnut Stilton and broccoli tart.

On a recent visit to meet a friend for coffee, my first impression was ...so many dogs....you could smell dog and hear dogs ... constant barking... This is not very relaxing and does not make for an enjoyable place to eat food. It was a very disappointing experience and will not be returning.

My family and I decided to have a light lunch out and visited John's Cafe as it was nearby. We arrived and we were served by very friendly staff. As we waited, the cafe started to get busy and everyone that came into the cafe had dogs. Some of the dogs were wet and smelly as they had obviously been on the beach fir a walk. My sister is allergic to dogs but they were all around us, close by. So, if you want to eat lunch away from dogs, give the cafe a miss. The food was nice, as were the staff though.

Coffee was cold. They Charge 60p more for them to take the cakes out of a plastic tub and put on a plate if sitting in. Orders made after ours were being handed out sooner so when I suggested the children will be fine to not have a plate and keep the cakes in the tub the staff said well it’s table service so I should suggest you don’t come here again! Abit harsh considering the service was taking so long!!

Whenever we are in the area on holiday we always head to John's for eating in but also to stock up up for one of our holiday cottage stays. Everyone is so friendly and helpful there and the menu and shop are packed with well chosen, high quality treats. We've had family illness of late and not been able to visit as much as we'd like. Paula arranged for a much needed supply of their excellent chocolate brownies to be posted to us. You really do need to try the brownies to appreciate how fantastic they are! Looking forward to returning in 2024. Many thanks

A lovely location and vibe - been here many times but today's visit was very poor! We ordered a sharing fish board but it was a long time before someone told us one of the main parts had run out - the substitute fish was just not the same - for £25 you expect it to be spot on! We had to change orders - my partner had a crab baguette. It was hard and very chewy and she couldn't eat it - we've had better in Greggs! She complained and it was reduced by 50% - fair enough but again, at £13 it should be excellent? I had the steak pasty, really nice but it must be the smallest I've ever had - again really expensive and just not worth it. Nice place but very over priced and slipping standards....

Came in this week for a take away coffee and cake, despite it not being busy and no queue, it took over 20 minutes for coffees to be served. Staff chatting amongst themselves whilst we were waiting. Unfortunately, my experience wasn't great. Johns closes at 17.30 and I walked through the doors with my baby at 17:15 only to be made to feel like I shouldn't be there. The young lady (blonde, around 18 years old) huffed when I came to the till with a handful of deli items. I actually had to ask if they were still open because that's the energy that came across. I felt rushed, there was no eye contact or chat, I tried to make light of the awkwardness I felt but she never cracked a smile. John's isn't cheap, I spent about £30 on different deli products. In 1 arm I had my baby and the other I was balancing salami, cheeses, olives etc yet I was never offered a bag!!! So strange. She immediately walked away once I was served without a 'thank you or bye'. I left feeling deflated as I really like to support the locals. On this occasion I wish I had shopped else where. Disappointing.

The food was exceptional, so tasty and nicely presented. The table however was SO sticky. I asked for it to be wiped but this did not solve the problem. The varnish/finish is clearly not fit for purpose. Another couple sitting close by said the tables have been sticky for many years. Why let yourselves down by not sanding the tables and sorting the problem. It totally put me off from returning. Shame as it is a quality place and top dollar prices with ghastly tables. Sort them as a matter of urgency.

They also found a cake supplier and that was truly fantastic as well. A huge thank you to Anthony and the team. Gerald and Anne

Best carrot cake I’ve eaten! Not much seating so had to take away. Delightful deli shop selling a varied range of quality goods.

We booked here for breakfast before our trip home from a short break. Ignored when we went in, then after asking we were stuck on a table next to the toilet with 2 young children and a dog. Asked about gluten free options and explained this was an intolerance for my daughter not an allergy. Weren’t prepared to help or advise, very uninterested - just continued serving at the till and more or less told us everything could have gluten in. We sat back down and looked at each other and I said to my husband “I’m really not happy here” and he replied “nor am I”. We left and on the way out briefly explained why but were ignored. They didn’t even say bye. Went down the road and discovered Ali @ Adele’s Cafe who were super with us, very accommodating, friendly and great food. Night and day compared to this place.

This is a great place for a coffee or something to eat when waiting for a train or shopping in the area. I meet friends here once a month and have never been disappointed. The full vegetarian breakfast is excellent. Don’t go to Costa, come here instead!

Stayed here for 2 nights to attend a friends wedding in a resort 5 minutes walk up the road. When we arrived it was very busy with people eating in the pub/restaurant and there was no parking. Staff advised they had saved us a space and we moved the cones and got parked. Quickly checked in and shown to our room. The room was spacious and clean. Large bed with 2 single duvets, my only grumble was it was not great sleeping under 2 single duvets on the double bed. We asked staff about getting to the bed behind the hotel and booked a table for dinner bit later, they were really helpful. 20 minute walk up a very steep hill behind the hotel and down a steep cliff path, we were on the most stunning beach, we had a swim! We had the local rump steak and chips for dinner that night and it was delicious. Breakfast both mornings was included and was very nice indeed. Would recommend the food here. We enjoyed our stay here and very good location for attending our friends wedding at Watermouth Cove.

After visiting Captain Jack's in 2023, we were not disappointed on our return visit! The pub decor is great with a good amount of space indoors and outside, the beer is good and the food tasty! Staff are friendly and make tourists feel welcome! A great visit for either lunch or an evening meal!
