Few venues have more ratings of “Terrible” then all other ratings combined. This now defunct bar was hilarious if you knew what to expect, but quite horrific for many who wandered in. To suggest that Janet was eccentric does not begin to describe it. You can get a flavour from the reviews below (and her responses). Inasmuch as this bar was in a touristy location, I cannot imagine how many visitors have decided never to come to London again based on their experience in this one dive. The irony of it all is that you could have some (expensive) fun here if you caught it on the right night and knew what to expect. Sadly no more will we get to read her acerbic responses to those who dare to criticise her. Perhaps she will do me the kindness of writing now to accuse me of turning up with a lot of very drunk people who peed on the floor and threw drinks at her long-suffering staff whilst refusing to pay in advance for a ridiculous round of drinks before going to her disgusting toilet and writing graffiti on the wall (or other such outrage). Good luck Janet. No hard feelings – I had some good tomes there.

I went here after work with some friends and colleagues and it was the most horrible experience. Never go here!! We were given a very expensive espresso martini that looked and tasted like dish water. When we asked for another Janet put baileys in, when we said this still didn’t make it an espresso martini she gave my partner the finger, absolutely disgusting behaviour for anywhere let alone a very expensive bar. Like I said pleas never go here.

If I could give this no stars I would. The worst drinks and Janet is the rudest woman I have ever met. Do not go here

Gemütliche, freundliche Bar für einen oder zwei oder … Drinks. Nicht einfach zu finden, da die Terrasse fast im Strassenbild verschwindet.

We went here after dinner on the way to our hotel. We sat on the little balcony and had a lovely time. It has quirky decor and the people there were friendly.

We went last night and received the worst service I have ever experienced in a bar. My friend, after having ordered drinks, came back to our table almost in tears by the way she was dismissed and spoken to by the awful owner. After receiving our drinks we were still treated with the least respect, and I’m certain after having had that small encounter with Janet, we were all sipping on her spit in our drinks. We also ordered hotdogs (DON’T ORDER THE HOT DOGS THEY WE STALE AND CRUSTY) and when we complained to the bar staff (and Janet) about the quality we were once again dismissed and told to sit back down as if we were dogs ourselves. All in all, this is the WORST place in the world, do not come here unless you like being treated with the least respect and told you are a psychopath.

Where to start ? Janet is possibly the most repulsive lady I’ve ever met. She has the grace and decorum of a reversing dump truck with no tires. Her attitude is appalling and after assuming we couldn’t afford to pay / that we were underage ( without even asking for ID when we arrived ) she tried to kick us out after being sat for approximately a minute. She only cares about materialism and the money, not about her staff or customers and this is very evident. You can’t buy class , and I witnessed this first hand with Janet. If I could give 0 stars I would. The bar is outdated , the only reason people visit is because it is the only place that is open after a certain time. I’ve been to much nicer places and spent a lot of money, but I wouldn’t spend £1 in that place.

WORST BAR IN LONDON. What a rude lady, never experienced such rudeness from a bar owner. Attempted to order drinks but would only be served under the condition that “you have to order at the same time”. We were kicked out as 2 people were not ready to order yet. Rediculous, worst place ever.

Janet is a nasty, mean, sour lady with the worst customer service skills I have every experienced. When politely raising issues about our drinks obviously being watered down Janet came over and threatened to kick us out / call the police and was very aggressive with us. The bar was filthy, not COVID secure and all the bar staff were just as rude as Janet. My advice? simple. Avoid Janet's bar at all cost. To get rid of this bar out of London for good should be everyone's mission as no-one deserves to experience Janet's attempt at customer service. It makes sense that the bar was completely empty on a Saturday night :) It is impressive that she even has a 2 star rating from nearly 400 reviews as 2 stars is far to kind. If i could give a -5 i would. AVOID AT ALL COSTS PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!

Staying in Gloucester Road for wedding anniversary. After meal in hotel we headed out looking for a late drink. Everything was closed and then we came across Janets bar. Even though time was getting on and the bar was full Janet found my wife and I a table. We had a great time in a friendly bar and Janet was a fantastic host along with her team. Decor is quirky but tells a story and so refreshing compared to pubs that all look the same. Reminded us of bars in NY that are always great fun. Yes the drinks are a little pricey but this isn’t a chain with huge buying power and I can’t imagine rent is cheap in South Ken. Thanks for a great couple of hours.

Janet’s bar is back. But lockdown has not eased her aggressive personality. Cocktails are overpriced and undrinkable whilst Janet herself thinks the best business strategy is to chase out paying customers. How long can Janet put this up, based purely on being the only bar in Kensington open past 11? Surely rivals will soon spring up offering more congenial alternatives

Went there tonight with friends, I work locally and never knew it was here until found it randomly tonight, a true hidden gem and open late. We loved the quirky decor and as it was quiet had a really lovely chat with Janet herself and her team. If you are new in town and looking for something less mainstream then this is your place.

One of the rudest reception possible, not even possible to sit before ordering, and it got even worst after as we were told by what appears to be the owner to "shut it off" following a few laughs. Wow! I forgot that a bar is supposed to be dead silent? What a madhouse! We didn't even reach the 5 mins-stay mark. Be smarter than us, don't even dare to enter!

If looking for a nice little bar I would suggest that you quickly keep walking passed Janet's and find another.💩 Absolutely shocking, served a tiny little cocktail in a glass the size of a double shot for the price of a bottle of wine💩. No alcohol could be tasted💩. You're asked to order another before you finished the first and Janet is not a welcoming and friendly lady☠. Avoid and walk the 5 minutes to the next pub around corner. 👎👎👎👎

Over the last 25yrs I have travelled across the world and enjoyed the food and drink in a variety of places. In all my years I can confidently say that this was the most disappointing experience ever. The drinks were awful, SIGNIFICANTLY overpriced, and the owner makes you feel very unwelcome. There is absolutely no reason for the prices being so shockingly high, even in London. I paid nearly £30 for a couple of very weak cocktails in two small cheap glasses that only vaguely tasted of alcohol. Physically, it is very grubby and dark, and the walls are covered in notes from apparent customers saying how amazing the place was. I suspect that most are very very old and they remain on the walls to pat the over inflated ego of the rude and unwelcoming owner. The bar staff seemed ok but I really can’t understand how they have survived as a small business, this is beyond me! My advice is find somewhere else to drink. Poor service and shocking value for money!!!!!!

Utterly disgusting establishment. Radox body wash as hand wash, no social distancing (not that there was anybody inside). We were greeted by an American woman who quickly lost interest. Drinks were awful. Cocktails were dreadful and drinks tasted watered down. For the price they charged, we were thrown crisps in a bag on the table? What is this? Atmosphere was non-existent. Music was ok. What brought our stay to an end was what seemed to be the lady in charge pass my friend and told him to ‘skooch’ in his chair because she had another group coming. How rude. The bar was empty all evening. I didn’t see any group coming and to be honest, I doubt there will be for a while.

Si va a tener su nombre encima de la puerta con una gran imagen sonriente de usted mismo, ¿quizás trate de ser menos dragón?¡Nunca me había hecho sentir más incómodo en un bar en mi vida! Janet emitió vibraciones de directora de escuela. Vine por un Vodka Soda, no para que me regañen como un niño cuando no pedí lo suficientemente rápido y pedí usar el baño. Las bebidas tampoco son baratas (pagamos 35 por 3 mezcladores por debajo del par) y ni siquiera se nos permitió sentarnos adentro debido a las reglas de distanciamiento social. Nos enviaron a sentarnos en el escalón del frente (afortunadamente evitamos la ira de Janet por las leyes de licencias con las que otros parecen haber tenido problemas).Cuando entré para usar el baño antes de irme, Janet chocó muy groseramente conmigo. El nivel de falta de respeto y falta de profesionalismo es SALVAJE. No puedo esperar a que responda a esta reseña, estoy seguro de que volverá a destacar su mal carácter. Lordisa, había pensado que estos clichés de Londres se habían ido. Supongo que no. COVID parece haber traído de vuelta los viejos tiempos de Londres de los 80. La elegancia "tosca y lista" de este lugar no es suficiente para justificar los precios deslumbrantes. Realmente no hay excusa para este dinosaurio. 30 por 2 cervezas y un vino. Asombroso. La broma definitivamente fue para nosotros. Evitar. Verdaderamente horrible.

Éramos un grupo de 4 amigos tomando una copa y charlando. Después de que cada uno de nosotros tomamos nuestra primera bebida cara, volvieron a ver si queríamos pedir una segunda y cuando dijimos que estábamos bien, ¡nos dijeron que teníamos que irnos porque "otras personas necesitaban los asientos"! Esto fue mientras no había nadie esperando un asiento, ¡eran las 11:00 PM y la mitad de los otros asientos estaban vacíos! Parecía que querían imponer una política mínima de 2 bebidas por persona, pero ni siquiera tuvieron el coraje de expresarlo, lo que lo hizo aún más molesto. No volvería a visitar de nuevo.

Visité el Janet's Bar para tomar un par de copas por la noche después de cenar con cinco amigos el viernes por la noche. No demasiado ocupado y el ambiente era relajado y relajado. A very unwelcoming atmosphere and very rude staff. When stood outside for a couple of minutes deciding where to move onto next, Janet herself came out and threatened to call the police on us for no comprehensible reason. A very strange experience and from the other reviews, it seems not an unusual one. Would not return.

Absolutely dreadful experience. Horrible atmosphere, expensive drinks, tacky decor and incredibly rude/dismissive staff. Everyone, both customer and staff, looking miserable and it is easy to see why. I do think Janet's staff base their attitude on 'Bad Janet' from 'The Good Place'. This is probably the most accurate way of describing how you are talked to. Also based on how fragile the ego of the person replying to the many negative comments I am fairly excited as to what I get in retort. All jokes aside, a shameful display by staff.

We went in the late afternoon when it was very quiet. I have to say the Barman seemed very disinterested and just played on his mobile, not good. I can imagine late at night when it is busy, it could be funny. I would try again for the humour, not a classy joint mind.

Visited Janet’s last night and from the moment we walked in Janet took a dislike to our group, she was very rude and clearly didn’t want us in there for no reason whatsoever. Wouldn’t tell us where the toilets were even though we had just bought 4 drinks then raised her voice to us and had the cheek to accuse us of being angry. Very strange woman who clearly has a lot of issues, if I’m honest the world would be a better place without people like Janet in it.

In the midst of souless chain pubs and bland conformity, I was delighted to discover Janet's Bar still going strong in South Ken. So cool as to be beyond cool, tbis is a kitsch little oasis of quirk hidden amoung the hustle and bustle. Great cocktails and friendly bar staff. Well worth popping in to say hello.

We are booked into the Brompton Hotel and found the bar beneath called Janets bar. Amazing little place and great atmosphere. Janet is an amazing landlady and bar staff are fab. A must if you’re interested the area.

Last night, Friday, wanted to meet up with five old friends in South Ken. Hadn't been to Janets for a few years, saw all the negative reviews on this site and chose a pub nearby. The pub was heaving, the noise level ridiculous, nowhere to sit, dreadful pounding trashy music - so moved on to another well known pub near to the station - actually worse than the first one - so, with some trepidation, back to Janets. It was a top quality experience, as eccentric and cool as ever. Three smiling, polite, efficient barmen, served immediately, space to sit down and chat in a sensible environment - prices are fine- I ordered five Italian beers and a bottle of Pedigree - £37, not bad for a very special cocktail bar. Next time my friends and I will ignore the critical reviews, they are either on a vendetta or should really have been round the corner in the awful pubs to start with! If you have a bit of style and maturity about you, then you can probably afford to pay a bit extra for a superior experience at Janets.

Llegué a Kensington con compañeros de trabajo y me alojé en el hotel Brompton. Genial tenía un bar por las escaleras que no es parte del hotel. Primeras impresiones, el pequeño y peculiar barman del pub en ese momento fue muy amable, ordenó una Coca-Cola y se sentó afuera en el pequeño balcón, que pensé que era agradable, pero luego vi dos botellas llenas de colillas, que no es algo agradable de mirar y olía horrible. . Salimos y volvimos tarde por la noche y pedí un arco fuerte que no podía creer el precio 7. 50 por una lata que ni siquiera estaba fría. El balcón no estaba abierto por la noche, había dos sillas bloqueándolo, por lo que no podía sentarse en él, no sé por qué, mientras la gente se reunía afuera del pub charlando. Estaba tocando música muy alta, por lo que era difícil escuchar una conversación en el interior, ya que solo era un pequeño pub. No conocí a Janet, pero me alegro de no haberlo hecho, ya que suena horrible y grosera, especialmente por los comentarios que hace, no muy profesional. En el lado positivo, la música se detuvo a la 1 am, lo cual fue un regalo del cielo ya que me estaba quedando en el Brompton y podía escuchar la música desde mi habitación, pero de repente se calmó. Puedo decir con confianza que nunca me han tratado de esta manera en ningún establecimiento antes de este horrible bar. Nunca he escrito una reseña antes de hoy, pero no podía dejar esta diapositiva. Fuimos con 8 amigos y cada uno de ellos pidió bebidas (extremadamente caras y mediocres de degustación), con la excepción de un amigo nuestro que quería pasearse y esperar un par de minutos. Pensamos que al principio Janet estaba bromeando, pero ella, de una manera extremadamente grosera, nos informó que las reglas del bar requerían que todos ordenaran de inmediato si queríamos quedarnos. Mi énfasis aquí es en el hecho de que ella era extremadamente RUDA, ya que me di cuenta de sus respuestas a otras críticas que intentaban defender esta regla arbitraria.

One of the worst experiences I have had in a bar. We went in undecided on what we wanted. We were rudely asked for ID. When we decided what drinks we wanted a card machine was shoved in our face. £24 for 2 double gin and tonics. The tonic was flat and the Gordon's gin was so poorly measured. Clearly the barman didn't know how to make a G&T; it had lemon orange and a LOT of mint in it. We literally walked out. Go to a pub down the road and avoid this place.

Av en slump såg vi balkongen där man kunde sitta utomhus och ta en öl. Baren var härligt stökigt och där skulle jag kunna tillbringa några timmar men nu skulle vi vidare till flygplatsen så det hanns bara med en öl. Värt ett besök.

This is a bar a few metres from south Kensington tube station and not easy to figure out.

First time we've visited this place was even nice. No problems at all. But on the next day She came out of shadow! Owner is the rudest person I've ever seen. Can't believe that it's possible to have a business with direct communication with customers with 0 soft skills. Situations can be different, but shouting on people that they didn't order something expensive enough for each after 4 minutes we came in, while half of us were already drinking, that's just stupid. That means that she have 0 economy skills also. Have never seen anything like this before.

Can someone please open a late night, relaxed bar in South Kensington? This place sucks; filthy, overpriced, incredibly rude owner. None of the staff know anything about drinks, measures or cocktails- just haven’t been trained properly.

Went here with a few friends. The barman tried to charge my mate’s girlfriend £8 for a pint that wasn’t even full and then got into an argument when she asked for a top up. Genuinely one of the worst pubs I’ve ever been to (and by far the worst one I’ve been to in London). Avoid.

I actually looked to see if there was a hidden camera! How can a drink be so awful?? A warm vodka and flat coke, and a crap supermarket beer (tesco £1.15) for £16!

Estaba Justo en la puerta de nuestro hotel y entramos a tomar unas cervezas. El ambiente es muy agradable y divertido, aunque hay que pagar precios de Londres 6-8GBP por una cerveza de lata pues no tienen tiradores. Los cócteles a 13,50 creo recordar. La música estaba bien y la dueña muy cercana y pendiente de sus clientes a pesar de su edad.

After reading other reviews I feel I have to contribute mine. I am a local and have been to the bar many times. It's a great place to go late at night when all other places are long closed. It's a bit more expensive than the pub but it's a bar and the prices are fine for that.

Terrible place, avoid it at all costs! It looks fun but the owner Janet is a disgrace I can't wrap my head around her. She is the rudest person I've come across in London or probably anywhere. She's a 70 year old american drunkard about to burst from fillers and botox and has zero respect for her costumers. I live 5 minutes from her bar so I decided to pop in for a drink and did not have my ID with me. She refused to serve me a drink which is fine but she was shockingly rude about it. She started screaming and cursing and telling me to "go fu*k off" when all I did was ask if I could show her pictures of my passport. Then she started screaming that she was "the counselor of South Kensington" and therefore knew where I lived (LOL). Also drinks are extremely over priced and the place is filthy but its covered up by lights so you don't really notice it right away. The other bar man is clearly terrified of Janet but he just cowers in the corner while she yells at costumers because he knows she's a psycopath.

Arranged to meet my friend there. He was 2/3rds thought his drink and we were going to go for food so were not planning on staying. Sat down for less than a min and was offered a drink. I said I was fine thanks.ans was told I would have to leave as it was policy. The whole thing was just rude and they pretended to look surprised as if it was my issue. The attitude sucks and guarantees I'd never think about spending a penny in there ever!

Do I need to say anything more than this; I paid £6 for a bottle of Budweiser! No beers on tap, really poor selection of bottled beers, unfriendly staff

De bar ziet er zeer aantrekkelijk uit van buiten, maar meer dan de quirky inrichting is er niet aan. De cocktails zijn overpriced en extreem slap. Er zijn zeker betere alternatieven om iets in deze buurt te drinken.

Llegué antes de la cena del domingo para tomar algo rápido antes de que reservara la cena. El lugar estaba muy tranquilo, esperaban que llegara el hielo, así que no había cócteles. Pero tengo una buena cerveza artesanal local. Charlamos un poco con la amable señora que estaba detrás del bar (le dijeron que era la hija de Janet). Peculiar, interesante lugar, pensé.

Quite possibly the worst drinks we’ve ever tasted not to mention the most expensive! The bar maid was rude and ignored us whilst telling her relationship history to a guy at the bar...boring hell! God awful decor and a very unwelcoming atmosphere, judging by the reviews here I have no idea why Janet hasn’t made some effort to make this better but either way we won’t be returning or telling our friends!

Terrible service and awful overpriced cocktails. £12.50 for cranberry juice and one shot of their ‘cocktail mix’. Staff laughed at us when we complained. They charge you before you get your drinks - must’ve had so many people refusing to pay because it’s SOOOOOOO BAD. Avoid at all costs.

It reminded me heavily of an expat bar you would find in Spain. Pretty tacky. No selection of draught beer, generic wine selection with no region or year. Heavily over-priced. A large bottle of beer is £10.50. Placed within a hotel, clearly taking advantage of tourists. I feel sorry for those who stumble in here, moreover, it saddens me that this venue is probably taken as the standard over other English pubs and bars. Poor representation and shameless exploitation.

You get charged before drinks are made - wonder what the typical clients are like - all drinks under poured and made by inexperienced staff. If you complain you will be kicked out by “friendly”, acerbic Janet. Plenty of very good other places nearby.

Obviously had to check out janets bar. Definitely quirky and very friendly. Come here if you want somewhere with character and cocktails

I had been here a couple of times before but after the last visit I will never return. Janet is one of the most awful people I have ever come across. Judging by her TripAdvisor reviews, the majority of others also agree. However interestingly enough she seems to think it’s the paying customers who are the problem - not her. For somebody that obviously hates people it escapes me why she would want to work in hospitality as she has 0 idea of customer service. Do yourself a favour and find somewhere else to drink - unless of course you want to be subjected to overpriced drinks, verbally abused and just generally treated like garbage, then by all means - this is the place for you!

A cider out of a warm can, coke without gaz, beer with no tast and a normal soda, and some olives for 22£ - for 4 disgusting drinks !

Never written a Trip Advisor review before but felt forced to after my visit here last night.

Mi amigo y yo caminamos alrededor de media hora antes de la hora de cierre, y pedimos una botella de vino, Janet y una de sus personal muy groseramente se negó porque Janet no me pareció justo para servir una botella muy cerca de la hora de cierre (bar) dijo que no. En vez ambos fuimos para una copa de vino blanco exageradamente caro cada uno y sabía absolutamente repugnante. Me alucina que este lugar ha logrado permanecer abierto durante tanto tiempo. . . . .

Bar HORRIBLE! El personal era super grosero y antipático conmigo y empiezan a gritar en mí porque me pidió un vino y me dieron otro. No recomiendo el bar!

I recently had a horrible experience at this bar and PLEASE read Janet's replies to the reviews below to see how out of order and inappropriate this woman is. Not to mention entirely out of touch with reality. Honestly there are loads of one star reviews on this page and yet Janet always has an excuse and rude reply ready- truly interesting how all these terrible reviews yet some how its always the customers fault! ha! Avoid this rude woman and do not give her any business. I look forward to reading the news one day (soon I'm sure) that this place has gone out of business.

I was sitting with friends when a few ladies come in and a couple had rucksacks and Janet shouted to them it wasn’t a hostel these ladies are professional people who after a long days work looking after people just wanted a drink you have lost my custom janet maybe you should put a sign up bar only for toffs with top hats tails and tiaras your a disgrace Janet to publiccans.

Wow! Gob smackingly rude!!! A group of 6 ordering cocktails and 1 person doesn’t want a drink? They threw a hissy fit! Empty for a reason. Not coming back.

The owner of this bar in incredibly rude. Avoid! There are plenty of nicer bars across London. Honestly any pubs/bars in the area are 100% nicer. Don’t risk ruin your evening.

The friendliest staff and a lovely atmosphere, which was just right for unwinding after a difficult day.

Éramos un grupo de 3" de color marrón "gente viniendo para una bebida el viernes por la noche. Le dije a la señora mayor que servían las patatas fritas de ella y ella comenzó a llegar rancio desagradable sin razón diciendo todo lo que había hecho fue para quejarme ya que llegamos. Ha perdido? No se había quejado de nada antes de eso! Quizás es hora de retirarse a la señora si no mantener y recordar cosas? ! Luego nos compramos algunas patatas fritas y ella estaba de nuevo solo pedir un argumento que acabamos teniendo como ella continuó siendo grosero. Sin duda nos sentimos como ella estaba siendo grosero con nosotros sin razón debido al color de nuestra piel. . Sólo me siento mal por su personal, sólo puede imaginar cómo los trata.

Janet’s eponymous ‘bar’ is the worst, most filthy, prideless, lowest quality, dreadfully staffed, hideously owned, rip-off dump I’ve ever been to. It is simply omni-revolting.

been going there for the past 15 years and it never disappoints...low key, fun place, far more fun than a lot of drinking holes in the area !! Do try it if you are in the area, the later in the evening, the better.

Horrible, ruthless and utterly without love. Overpriced and run by the nastiest bartender in London. You can hear her bully her staff behind the bar - 'that man has been standing for 5 seconds and hasn't bought a drink'. If you under order you are thrown out. Pints of beer - in bottles - at £11 a throw. The owner is truly charmless and held together by plastic surgery and sheer capitalist, bullying ego. Avoid at all costs.

This place is awful. Staff are incredibly rude and demand prepayment for drinks after having to wait 10 mins before they actually come up to serve. To be avoided!

Janet me sacó del bar porque me había pedido un grifo de agua potable, ya que no era, aunque también había traído 6 amigos que estaban bebiendo. This “bar” styles itself on being outrageously rude, kitsch and over priced. It is, £10.95 of a 660ml beer, £7.95 for a small.

Janet's charge £13.00 for an Aperol Spritz. Having just spent a week at the Hotel du Palais in Biarritz, I was forced to compare the €12.00 for the same drink, in a Palace by the ocean, drinking by the pool. I'm not sure how they can justify this.

Excellent bar - not for lightweights. Know what you want to drink, don't fanny about, and don't ask where Janet is.

I've never been treated so badly in a bar. I couldn't dance cos apparently was 'dangerous', I was denied to get a second drink, its overpriced and the ladies that are running the business are not fit for that. If they get custom it's because it's the only place in south Ken remains open till 3 am. Don't recommend to anyone

After working 12 hours in a hospital. We went there to have a drink. After one drink, we asked for a second one. They did not want to serve us because we looked tired. My friend and I had to leave the bar as they were very rude ( owner and bartender). It is very expensive place. Many thanks for ruining our night.

Janet the owner is a horrible host, very rude, nosey and will kick people out of the bar out of personal dislike. Me and my friends decided to leave after being treated so poorly, avoid!

First I have to say that I hardly ever write bad reviews, unless I have been treated badly, like it was the case in this bar.I was with a group of friends and we were looking to have a drink on a Saturday night in south Kensington. I suggested this bar since I used to live around and I always thought it looked beautiful from the pictures.When we got there it was quite quiet for a Saturday night, but I instantly loved the feel of it. That feeling rapidly disappeared when Janet told one our friends, after looking at us weirdly from the moment we walked in, that we were too many people (10) and that we were not going to be served. She basically invited us to leave the bar and refused to serve us. I just couldn't believe it. We were a group of girls and boys, and in our thirties, sober and not making any fuss. She stand there at the bar and invited us to leave.Up to now I honestly struggle why she had that attitude and why they treated us like that. We went and spend our money elsewhere, obviously. I obviously cannot rate the drinks!After all those years open, they should at least know how to treat clients. Just saying.

Five years ago, I ventured abroad to London to study Shakespeare for a semester and my Uni had put us up in a few flats in the ultra-posh, very centrally located South Kensington neighborhood. After a month or so trying at least a dozen drab Wetherspoons' variations on a theme, we discovered Janet's Bar on a walk home from the nearby tube station. We slipped in and were transported. The decor of the bar is kitschy and magical, with unique and eccentric news clippings, photos, memorabilia, and light-up objects adorning every service save for the bar. On our first visit, we chose to sit at the bar, despite there being ample seating throughout the cozy space, including some tables and chairs outdoors on a small street patio. We ordered a few cocktails, quickly prepared (with generous pours) and did not have to worry about tabs as the bar charges up front for drinks. Perhaps this is unconventional, but it can be a breath of fresh air when you're used to racking up unseen tabs throughout the course of a night. We sipped, relaxed, and enjoyed laughs shared between our party, our fellow bar goers, Janet, and her staff. The night was memorable, delicious, and entirely singular. That was five years ago. I have visited London every summer since, and every time I do, I make sure to pop into Janet's Bar for an unforgettable sort-of homecoming at a spot that goes the extra mile to make you feel like a neighbor, or better yet, dear friend. My partner and I have made many new friends and held countless fascinating conversations over drinks at Janet's. Janet, herself, is a one of a kind dynamo, always willing to whip up a favorite cocktail or engage with you in a smart conversation in between running a very tight ship. Every visit is different from the last, as unique as the characters who have picked up rounds for new friends at the bar, but something remains the same: the unforgettable fun and communal sense of spirit that can be so hard to find in the hustle and bustle of city life, and especially in the sterile, posh bars or cookie cutter Wetherspoons pubs that overrun South Kensington. For that, Janet's Bar is a most essential South Ken gem.

Look, Janet's Bar is a trip. The decor is super kitchy, sometimes the staff are crazy excited and sometimes they're a little standoffish, the signage is overwhelming, you have to pay in advance, the selection of drinks is a little unusual, and it's just overall a very strange place. But like... that's the whole point. You need to have a sense of humor about the whole thing - the bar is super not pretentious, charming if you let it be, and a wonderful divey alternative to other bars, pubs, etc etc. Sure, it's a little pricey but no moreso than anything else in the neighborhood, and Janet's Bar has way more heart than anywhere nearby. And the drinks are just fine, honestly. If you walk in here expecting a "normal" bar, you probably won't like it or have a good time. But if you're game to just sit and see what happens, you'll probably end up having fun, silly, or unusual experience - drop in. My boyfriend and I have been twice and every time we're in London we want to go back - we've made friends and gathered fun and hysterical stories to tell both times we've been. Oh, and Janet is awesome. She comes on strong with a big personality, but if you're kind to her she'll be kind to you - not sure what's so hard about that.

Most pathetic excuse for a bar. I had high hopes when I walked in and there were customers even in August. I ordered an Old Fashioned but I was told by the manager that they were not making cocktails tonight (despite displaying a cocktail bar reference). A can of Strongbow Dark Fruits, which costs 6 for £5 in a shop costs £4.95 per pint (full of ice which does not consist of a can) at this bar. We also ordered 660ml bottles of Tyskie for the group at £6 each (which is unreasonable for a shop but fair enough for a bar) to share between friends but the second time we went to order apparently they had no Tyskies. In fact the manager insisted they neither had Birra Morettis plus whatever other beer they served. The frustrated bar lady (who probably found a new job by the time this review is posted) offered us replacements in the form of not pre-payment warned £6 Heineken bottles, which the manager refused to bat her eyelids from her priorities in the form of sexual flirtations. As someone who works at a bar/restaurant two minutes walking from that bar I have seen children with disabilities display more charisma. Pathetic excuse for a bar and I hope either Janet removes her staff or sends her customers to an actual bar that can cater for their needs...
