Island Cafe Flat Iron Square in Southwark

Loved the place. We had an Egyptian menu today and it was amazing, from hawaushi to goulash and mousaka and also fatta! Not to forget the kunefa, rice pudding and Om Ali, all 3 really good. The best desert Om Ali. One more thing: tried an Egyptian hot drink called "Hot Hummus" and is warm tomato juice with chick peas, chilies and lime juice too. We will be coming back soon, definitely! The staff was very helpful and kind. Moroccan tea was really good too

I’ve never seen a kitchen with so many flies. We went to grab a shawarma after meeting some friends in Flat Iron square and it took 45mins to make make two. I had to ask them to remake them after noticing that one was covered in flies when they left it on the counter getting cold for 10mins while they cooked some chips. I could only eat half of it before I started to feel ill. The actual shawarma itself was poor with oily pan fried chicken that lacked any distinctive flavour, no sauce and limp lettuce wrapped in a bread that seemed more suitable to felting a shed roof than eating.

It’s been two days since my visit to island cafe and frankly my stomach hasn’t been the same since. We went on our way home after popping to see some friends at flat iron square after both me and my partner having had worked late- thought to ourselves, here’s a restaurant with some people sat outside, must be quite good. How wrong we were. It was about 15 minutes before we were asked what we wanted and a further 45 minutes until we received our food. We ordered two shwarma wraps which firstly were pan fried?! Something I’ve never heard of... and secondly had to ask for them to be remade on account of the huge number of flies in the food preparation area. Which was generally very dirty. The staff seemed more content sat around chatting and letting the flies crawl all over our food. They also cooked our chips and left them on the side so by the time we got the rest of the food they were stone cold. We were also over charged and as the review tag line states - after this abismal meal my stomach hasn’t been the same for the last two days. Horrific.

Been coming here weekly for the past few years the last 10 months there has been a group of new people running it... total joke now, loyal customers are not taken care of the same, they allow people to bring alcohol and drink it at the cafe, the shisha has gone down hill, the prices have gone too high service is just not the same, i was sat there for 2 hours and got my coals changed once, I am now looking for a new place to smoke regular they should change it back to how it used to be with the old crew working there used to be the hidden gem in london to smoke shisha but now not to sure!

The staff are more than accommodating. They go the extra mile. Great value and great quality flavour. Rumour has it - you need the try the apple. Great facilities nearby and friendly clientele. 10/10 all round - tourists must come!

Staying nearby, we decide to walk the streets to find a proper caff for breakfast & chanced upon this place. It was a bit ramshackle inside & a little scruffy. Just how I like it! We ordered 2 small full english breakfasts & a mug of tea. Lapped it up, how a fried breakfast & a cup of tea should be. Check this place out. Recommended.

Having gone in a few cafes were the portions left a lot to be desired, this one has changed the trend, there are different set breakfasts and they are all good and plentiful. Very good staff will certainly visit again.

The food quality was not very good. The service was okay. Location in order but toilets could be cleaner.

Good breakfast and nice coffee in an interesting location with plenty of shaded seating outdoors. Bicycle friendly and on the CS7 and Quietway 14 routes.

I have visited a couple of times recently, once while in the area on business and most recently with my wife for a coffee to pass time. It's well worth a visit. There's a good choice of food and drinks, the Staff members are invariably welcoming, cheerful and helpful. Prices are very competitive and portions are generous. The whole place is clean and tidy and there's a range of seating from basic to comfortable and with outside seating and tables in an area that's not got heavy traffic. They have extended hours from early morning breakfasts to late evening and Shish. I've only been there in the morning and early afternoon. It's well worth a visit and we shall be returning. The range and quality of food, particularly for the price, is hard to beat. It's popular with office staff from nearby during the week. Several come in for takeaway. I had a really good bacon sandwich and our coffees were spot on. It's easily possible to get a good snack and a drink for around £5.

I've been here a couple of times. A nice cafe with a good selection of food for lunch, with both indoor and outdoor seating. Great place to stop for a huge pannine and giant mug of tea!!

Returned here after a while away on a freezing cold day but found a warm welcome and cosy heaters in the outdoor area which add real charm. I like the atmosphere here very much and the coffee and casual foods are great. The location is lovely - even though you are in such a busy area it feels quiet as basically you are in a pavement location away from traffic.

Not sure what has happened but what used to be a reliable place for a café lunch has become unreliable with unreliable service and lacklustre food. The location is still excellent but it really has to up its game. It feels like the food has been sitting there for too long and is under heated. My pasta was really like yesterday's ready meal half re-heated in a microwave. Not going to visit again unless I read better reports.

Its a normal cafe in the day, and shisha middle eastern outdoor restaurant at night. We usually go once a week at night to get falafels ad the staff and food are always friendly and nice to us.

Lovely Hot chocolate and breakfast...the lasange looks good too. Shisha pipes and outdoor space if required.

This cafe was right on my route through Southwark and opens early so made a good stop for a casual breakfast. It was perfectly OK and I would come here again. Prices were reasonable and I got served quickly. Food was nothing to get too excited about but perfectly adequate. I like the location and 'laid back' nature of the place. Good wi-fi too.

Not a great start. We were only people in which was probably a sign, however clearly mid redecoration so let's see. Food average today but will probably try again and see if things have settled down. Continues to be a rollercoaster of a cafe!

Yes early morning meeting and an interesting outside bit hot but shady Mediterranean feel, waiting for the business meeting a bit early provided paper told wi fi and in all great service

Reasonable prices, steak and side dishes are all delicious.Very recommended. So many people were waiting to dine. I waited for a long time... But the speed of ordering and serving is quite fast, I got my dishes very soon.

Encontré este lugar para un bocadillo tarde y era preciosa. El menú tenía un montón de platos árabes. El Shawarma estaba bien antes de cocinar, el marinaded falafel era precioso. Yo habría estado bien tener una gran selección de postres de medio oriente. Fuera había un número de pipas Shisha disponible

Yo estaba asistiendo a la capacitación en un edificio cercano, así que entré a este café en época de vacaciones (aprox 11:00) para encontrar un bocadillo. Me decidí por un plátano. Los frutos estaban en un área cerrada, así que preguntamos al personal si podría haber un plátano. Dijo 'NO! "me lo miraron a la figura si era una broma, pero él parecía bastante en serio. Así que me pregunté ¿por qué? Entonces, el personal propio como si él tenía recorrected nuevos conocimientos para resolver una cuestión difícil, y recoger los plátanos dijo, son un £1, si quiere uno, dos,. . . . En ese momento buscaba él preguntando si había algo sobre mí que pensó que yo era un mendigo y no puedes pagar mi elección de 'comida' en su cafetería. También me preguntaba si él me trató de esta manera porque soy negro. Posiblemente nunca le diga por qué alguien en un negocio público, se debe tomar esta actitud. Volví a clase y no podía consentrate para una hora de tratar con las emociones de esta experiencia. Este es un ejemplo de cómo la discriminación puede ser destructiva, sutil como parece! ! ! Puedo decir que nunca ir allí de nuevo, pero me pregunto cuántas personas esta persona/lugar afectará con su actitud.

Never can tell who owns this place or runs it and the rollercoaster ride continues as our latest visit was below par, all very strange,

This was recommended to me as a reasonably priced place to eat with good food, I've been had over. Way over priced, gloop as food, very small portions. Food as mash of microwaved cat puck.Give this a miss. Walk 5 mins to any other eatery towards Southwark tube.

Met for lunch with friends. Wouldnt recommend the coffee for sure! Food is ok nothing amazing but edible.

前來倫敦前，好友已大力推介Flat iron , 起初覺得呢啲地用餐唔便宜，一客牛肉排只係10英磅，肉質鬆軟，香口，如加兩英磅，更有薯條配送，是次消費人均15英磅。

Stopped for a quick macchiato, but got a tiny white coffee instead! Needs some barista training updates. The outside seating was pleasantly sunny, and I didn't have time for any food, so I can't comment on that.

Had breakfast here but Not sure what you would expect these days but this cafe is certainly tired. Foods not bad and reasonably priced with a nice external seating area. My fried eggs were hard and the sausage a bit undercooked.Coffee was good though.Crying out for an upgrade as it's very dated.

Happy to say that standards are being maintained with our regular pre football/pub Saturday haunt knocking out consistent breakfasts etc. Can't believe how much the tourists will pay for poor stuff in the London Bridge area when value like this is available.

How hard is it to mess up a mug of tea and scrambled eggs? I don't know because I forgot to ask them in here!The toilets are putrid and the air in the cafe is thick with burnt toast.

This cafe has a lovely sense of space, inside and out. There are board games provided. Mug of decent coffee reasonably priced. Will visit again.

Bargain priced bacon roll and coffee - just what's needed in the morning. Staff are really welcoming.

I used to go here for breakfast 2 or 3 times a week. They have recently increased their prices by about 40% but the standard of food (probably the worst breakfast ever this morning) and the service behind the counter has really dropped. I'll just walk on past now and find somewhere else.

Prices back to what they where and breakfast items also back to normal. On top of the service issues now so all in all back to a decent average fry up!

Looks like a recent change of owners. Breakfasts up in price and tomatoes and mushrooms not on the plate today. Worse chaos reigned in the kitchen with orders confused etc. Too much nearby competition not to put things right or suffer.

I walk past this cafe each day and tend to stop for coffee and a bacon sandwhich a couple of times a week. Great service, good proces, clean and all that jazz. What's not to like?

Stopped in here for breakfast one day. Prices are very good... I think my sausage roll was in the 2GBP range and tea was 1GBP and my husband's full English breakfast was 6 GBP or less and it was very tasty and filling. I would go back again.

The trouble with Southwark being up and coming is that every Tom, Hix and Harry is putting their prices through the roof. A good old fashioned English breakfast should be hearty, well cooked and tasty. Correct on all grounds. Add to that a great price and friendly service, then you are on to a winner. I'll be back as Arnie would say.

I went here for one of their breakfasts with a friend. The waitresses are very friendly and the food is cheap. Big portions. The food was a bit heavy on cooking oil but hey, it's a full English Breakfast!Highly recommended!

Whenever I goo to the Oval to watch cricket the day starts at the Island Café with a 'Full English'. I've been coming here for years, they give good service at a reasonable price and if the weather's good you can sit outside and watch the world go by. Borough is not one the most picturesque parts of London but it's 'real London' with real pubs (my favourite is the Royal Oak) and a great market.There are loads of breakfast places in London but if I'm anywhere near Borough this is the place I'll go to. It's a ten minute walk from Borough underground station.

Bog standard but perfectly acceptable. 2 eggs 2 bacon sausage beans toms hash brown(another yank invention they are more than welcome to have back!) and 2 toast £4.80. Does a job and nothing at all wrong with that. Same thing in Borough Market they rave about but I can't see much difference.

I stumbled upon this place while looking for some breakfast and I decided to give it a shot. I had some eggs, coffee and a muffin. All decent, nothing too great. I noticed it was full of regulars all having full breakfasts, like another reviewer commented.

I went in today 20 March 2014. I had a chicken escalope with bacon and cheese panini. It was very good. The price was £3.80 and it was tasty and very filling. A coffee was £1.00. The girls behind the counter are very pleasant with beaming smiles. Just after I arrived, a number of guys came in, who were clearly regulars, with each ordering a full breakfast. I noted the price as £4.80, but did not see the quality as they sat around a corner - but I did not hear any complaints!Will I go back? I sure will.

Waitresses are very polite and welcoming.Breakfast is a complete dog though. Fried eggs were really hard with a crispy crust on the yolk. Totally solid.Best bit of the whole getup were the beans and the toast. Sausage is your typical value range fare, bacon is pre-cooked and the hash brown was a travesty. Didn't touch it.While I expect my fry up to be greasy I don't want actual oil visible in large amounts in the beans.The whole lot was just under a fiver. There are far better places than this.Shame really as the staff are great but the food is a complete let down.

This interesting cafe which presumably takes its name from the pedestrian oasis betwixt union street and southwark bridge road. It's on my walk to work and I occasionally pop in for a take out coffee for a very reasonable £1. My preferred cafe (Terry's) was full and I was in the area so decided to give it a go. I ordered the full english with a coffee and was charged a very impressive £5.80. There are two waitresses that I have encountered previously. Both super efficient. Both Polish. That's where the similarity ends as one is curt, stoney-faced and not exactly cheery. She's not rude in anyway or unpleasant but I try to avoid her if I can. The other lass is very friendly, and smiley. I was served by miss happy. Breakfast was: one average quality sausage, 2 slices of pretty tasty bacon, beans, a thick slice of fresh tomato (grilled)plus 2 eggs and two slices of toast. There was also a hash brown on the plate too which is ridiculous and an affront. The breakfast was ok. It was not great and nor was it poor but I was very disappointed when one of my eggs was not runny. This is school-boy stuff and it's not good enough. Coffee was good, toast was good with enough butter and colour to work and my other egg was correctly done. The cafe had a steady stream of custom during my visit on a Sat morning. I had to give an all round 'average' marking for this cafe but the service is very good and the food is perfectly acceptable. The friendly waitress deserves much praise for her welcome smile and customer service skills. Would I come back? Only if I can't get a seat at Terry's.
