Having just moved to Barnes I was excited to try this restaurant with some friends. I had been pre-warned about the off hand service and it's true, only one of the waiters made an effort to serve nicely. The food, however, is gorgeous. I will probably return as the restaurant is cosy and the curries are top notch, but I would hesitate to recommend to anyone who thinks an expensive restaurant should employ staff who actually do their job and try and smile now and then.

I will keep this short.....service was awful....waited an hour for our main course to arrive...no one bothered asking if the food was ok/we needed anything else - maybe because they knew it wouldn't be. The rice was old and dry, the dhal, the worst I've ever had....the Kerala fish curry was ok but nothing to rave about. I'm pleased we tried it but definitely will never go back.

I went to Indian Zilla for the first time with my wife and had a great evening. We were booked in quiet early - 7:30pm and at that time there were only a couple of other people in the restaurant. We very much enjoyed the menu as there were a lot of interesting options that we had not had before at an Indian restaurant and so we selected some starters to share and some curries for our main courses. The food we had was very good with some nice presentation styles.Towards the end of our meal the place really filled up and you could see the people serving were struggling a bit to get everything done which is what you note in other reviews. Hopefully the team will put on some extra staff to cover what seems to be a great food experience but could do with a bit more man power. We will certainly be going again and are excited to have such a great Indian close to where we live.

We ordered simply a main course and a basket of papadoms. We waited well over an hour for our food to arrive, despite politely enquiring twice. The restaurant was busy, but not entirely full. Regardless, I do not feel that taking that long for one course of food is acceptable. On arrival, one of our dishes (duck-based) was good however the beef-based curry (I forget the name/exacts now) was incredibly chewy and tough, despite being described on the menu as 'tender'. Regardless of whether you are in an 'upscale' Indian or local 'curry house', meat should be (and often is) tender, as that is part of the curry 'DNA' - to have soft meat that has been slow cooked. To wait over an hour and to be finally served tough, chewy meat - not good!We will not be returning!

Start with puppodums as a started. starters are a bit small but tasty. If you like fish, fish shirale is the best dish. if you fancy meat go for the lam curry. Try the indian wine if you like to try new things, you won't regret it. Staff friendly and indians family come often which is always a good sign. My husband went to Brick Lane as apparently you can find the best indians however not at the same level at Zilla. The restaurant itself is light, classy and tasteful (if you don't mind the Kama Sutra images in the toilets), with reasonable but a bit slow service. However, as a bit of an amateur foodie, I'm all about the food taste. Maybe different people have different expectations for Indian food. From my limited experience here, it didn't have the distinctive and elusive 'British Indian Restaurant' flavours. But that's not the point...The starters set the tone for a delicious and innovative meal. The Vegetable Bhanavla with a tamarind sauce was like stacked onion bhaji patties. This was light, not dry like onion bhajis you might get elsewhere, and flavoursome. I couldn't wait for the mains!Unfortunately the first spoonful of each of the mains dashed my hopes, the second and third just confirmed the disappointment. They were rated as 'Spicy' - which they were. A little too spicy for me but I can handle it. The problem is that spiciness does not equal taste. There just wasn't much of it - it was all just a bit bland with any flavours being too subtle/weak. I wanted flavour. It wasn't here.Let me describe it like this: Imagine making a curry at home starting off with a tasty base gravy. You've got your onions, tomatoes, garlic and so on. Smells good, tastes good, it's definitely going to end up being good. Then to make a particular curry you start adding other spices, you add this and that, you're winging it a bit like some kind of curry magician - a currygician(TM)! After all that hard work you taste it... and it doesn't really taste of anything much. The flavours have got lost somehow. This it that. The lamb shank meat was slightly too tough for what it was - not the tender melt-off-the-bone meat I've had before. The duck breast was also a little bit too over-done. Minor forgiveable points in comparison though. I've grown up with curries and over-cooked meat but I'd expect a bit more finesse from such an establishment. The naans were 'OK'. The Peshwari naan was also a bit plain - barely a hint of sweetness, barely a hint of coconut or raisins. Forgettable.Due to the high disappointment quotient, we didn't bother trying any desserts, although they did look good on paper, i.e. from their descriptions. This seems to be the main theme of the restaurant. It looks good on paper, but it's just not quite 'there'. In my humble opinion it doesn't quite live up to it's image. Take away the nice environment, the prices and the fancy menu descriptions, then it's just another by-the-numbers London take-away to satisfy a curry craving. The taste of the food didn't match up to the delicious curry smell wafting across Barnes. Perhaps it was the smell of the base gravy. Perhaps it was coming from elsewhere. It's best to have no expectation but it's difficult not to based on glowing reviews and the price point. The first page of the menu proudly displays quotes from the likes of Michael Winner and other food critics. Maybe they had other expectations or tried dishes with more flavour. Even without my expectations it would've been an anti-climatic disappointment. Am I picky? Yes. But I want what I pay for.

Four of us ate here last Saturday evening and we all agreed that it was one of the best Indian meals we have had. Everything we ordered was delicious, but the starters stand out, in particular the prawns. The spicing was subtle and the food tasted fresh, not the warmed up meat in sauce that is all too common. We would definitely eat here or order from here again for these reasons. The downside was that they forgot one of the dishes we ordered and all of the poppadoms were smashed into small pieces. Putney station in South west London jumps, thronged with flat dwelling yuppies and boomers who got in early buying Edwardian family houses now worth a fortune. 4 minutes down the line out of town is Barnes station in the middle of the common, quiet, dark but with the same stock of Edwardian family houses and more green wellies. Indian Zilla is in Barnes and that may be its downfall. In younger, urban Putney Ma Goa prospers offering a similar new take on Indian food. At Zilla the food is pretty good too, though priced 20% higher. So we are talking about an expensive Indian and I judge it that way. Chicken in the starter and my curry was tough, sad to say, but otherwise flavours were interesting and fresh. It was good to eat brown basmati rather than the usual white and indeed not to be fishing for food in ghee. I wish Zilla well, but I wonder if Barnes has the population to support it because I doubt those youngsters from Putney will pass Ma Goa to visit.

This restaurant suffers a bit from its location, where parking not always that easy. It is brave of them to persist with it view a few other failures, some quite notable chefs, before them. The food is excellent with wonderfully fresh, tasty and varied dishes. It tends towards the spicy side, but there are plenty of milder dishes as well. Strongly recommend the scallops starter and the chicken Miravna, and finish off with a settling Rasmalai. Service as one or two others have remarked is a little chaotic and disorganised, but polite and well-meaning.

However no one had appeared to take our order for another 15 mins. He had to go and get someone to take our order. The food took ages to arrive and we weren't eating till about 9.30.The food was hot and good. They gave us a free bottle of wine but no real apology. Then we asked again, then on the third time we got lucky. We then sat and stared at our empty starter plates for ages whilst we watched take away after take away get handed out. As diners in the restaurant we were ignored and had to prompt for our main courses several times. After nearly an hour we gave up and asked for the bill. It's amazing how ignorant some people are. The minority who have criticised Zilla are clearly in the wrong place and should go to Monzil around the corner which is not actually Indian at all. Rather it is Bangladeshi owned and operated as are most 'curry houses' in London. India Zilla on the other hand is Indian. From the owner/chef Manoj (of Chutney Mary, Tamarind fame etc) to the staff serving you. Authentic Indian food and hospitality. This is a very high end Indian restaurant where you can be assured of delicious food freshly prepared for you. The menu is short and caters for all. There are a few of the 'traditional' dishes you may expect to see but they are far from the same look or style. The chicken tikka for example is melt in the mouth tender but devoid of the food colouring you would associate with this normally. I recommend the aubergine and king prawn starter and the lobster dishes. This is a very strange site for a restaurant and having been there a few times I'm delighted it has done well. On the most recent occasion the place was packed and understandably they were making the most of it so squeezing tables very close to each other. The atmosphere was understanbably buzzy. As for the food; this isn't anything you are likely to recognize from your student curry days but the dishes are delicately spiced and well flavoured. I hadd Gitta Lamb which was very spicy and went well with the plain naan.Overall, this is a good place to come to get your spice craving catered to in a more sophisticated environment. Not the usual dishes you get on the menu of an Indian restaurant, a variety of regional and authentic food. The thali option is a good way to try multiple dishes. A few complimentary nibbles also make it a nice service experience.

Visited with friends on a whim and were very happy with all aspects of the visit. A lovely well presented restaurant, which was quieter than the food would suggest it should be. We skipped starters for a choice of sides with the mains, one of our party was a vegetarian and they advised what would suit her very well, opting for some delicious banana flower croquettes in a creamy sauce. During the meal the waiter bought over and additional side of roasted aubergine and corn which he thought we would like to try on the house and he was right as I will be ordering it next time. The only negative was the lamb on my lamb shank was not as tender as I'd have liked but still ery flavourful. If you drink red I thoroughly recommend the organic malbec. Overall a superb experience.

had a superb meal last Friday ~ I was amazed the place wasn't full, but that was to our advantage as the service was 2nd to none!the whole place is beautifully decorated and set up and feel very luxurious!the food was extremely tasty and a very interesting menu with the staff only too pleased to explain or recommend ~ and to cap it all off, I thought it was very good value indeed!

At the northern-most end of Rocks Lane, Barnes is a light bright space - gleaming cutlery and crockery and crispy white napery. The friendly uniformed staff are knowledgeable and helpful. We were slightly pushed for time so opted for the daily special menu at £12 for two courses. We started with a fish patty and a lamb patty (which sound better in Indian but taste just as good with my translation). Followed by a spicy Malai Chicken Tikka and a spicier Lamb Rogan Josh, Cauliflower Baji and the most delicious Peshwari Nan we have ever tasted. All this aided and abetted by a Chardonnay/Gewurtztraminer blend from the Chilean Tamarind Garden. Bliss all round, clearly freshly cooked, with so many flavours enhancing each other. Will return soon

Cannot fault Indian Zilla. Beautiful interior, lovely staff, and flavours you've never tasted before. An amazing experience with beyond amazing food!

Our 1st visit but we shall return. We braved the prevailing snowy conditions but thoroughly enjoyed the meal even though the starter portions were perhaps a little meagre. The spicy tastes were subtle & not too hot & this was definitely a curry with a difference. The service was good & we are pleased to have discovered this gem which has been going for 2 years now.

We had the two veg starters and the two veg mains with a couple of side dishes. Extremely good food and service but would probably choose to skip the starters and go with more sides next time.Somewhat disconcerting on Christmas Eve for some at the next table to be given presents by the restaurant; we're not regulars and perhaps that's why we received nothing but it did feel like a bit of a snub after an otherwise excellent meal.

Along with its sister restaurant in Hammersmith, produces a good range of Indian food. Not the sort you expect from Indian restaurants that cater for Brits. really imaginative food. Try the gymkhana lamb chops.

I'm sorry I can't really remember the specifics of what I had at the restaurant - what I do remember is the food was great. All the dishes I had were very well presented and tasted lovely. The restaurant was a tad on the expensive side, but I guess you've got to pay above average for food that tastes far above average. The decor was nice and inside was light and airy. All in all, good experience here, I would recommend the restaurant and go back again in future.

I enjoyed my second visit to this restaurant. If you enjoy Indian food Irecommend Indian Zilla. From the decor to the service and range of dishes it takes Indian food to another level.A little more expensive than some traditional curry restaurants but still good value taking into account thequality and taste of the dishes.

Food was absolutely amazing however delivery was 1 hr early. Luckily someone was home to collect it however was cold by the time we got to it. Not sure if this was an app or restaurant fault although I do highly recommend the food!

We visited this restaurant for the first time yesterday, it truly was remarkable. From the minute we walked in the waiters were all so friendly and helpful. We were shown straight away to our seats and given the menu. There was so much choice it was hard to choose and when we ordered we were asked did we want any spices added. Which we have never been asked before in an Indian restaurant. The food was delicious and piping hot which is just how I like it. It truly was the best Indian I’ve ever tasted and I’ve had quite a few. We will definitely go back and when we do we will have extra spices added
