Ichiban in Edinburgh, City of

My partner and I went in without booking for a late dinner while visiting Edinburgh. The staff were happy to let us dine in. The food was wonderful - we went for Sashimi, sushi and a rice dish. It was so tasty and we were blown away. I would go all the way back just to go again!! I cannot fault the restaurant - 10/10!

Honestly, not good enough and not worth the money, noodles were overcooked, tako Yaki were too soft and the dumplings were dry in the outside, paid more than 25 pounds for these, and again simply not worth the money ☹️ To not make all seem negative I can at least say that the Tako Yaki had a really nice flavour but again texture wasn't there, and the fried pork was also quite decent, 2 stars out of 5

Outstanding! Pink pickled ginger was the only downfall....id prefer homemade, but still very good portions. Sushi was fresh, light and very moreish! Will definitely order again! 10/10!

All dishes were tasty, a bit too small portions I would say. The “soup” was a nice touch , I was looking forward to taste it.. but come on guys…. It is not any soup , it’s the water from the food you cooked. When I cook chicken or potatoes I am not calling this water from potato “potato soup” 😂 Otherwise we enjoyed

Delicious food as always. Easily the best sushi I've had with consistently top quality.

Too much rice and not enough fish + filling with sushi. Everything tasted oddly salty. Packaged & delivered without issue.

Food was disgusting. Poor quality bits of tuna, maki rolls weren’t even rolls (more like open sandwiches), the teriyaki salmon was like something from a condemned Chinese restaurant in the 80’s. And to top it off, I had to wait over an hour for the delivery of this.

I'm very disappointed as I found a bit of grey metal in the rice...it looks like a bit of wire wool from a dish scruber..

Excellent - this is the second time I've ordered from Ichiban, and I must say, their sushi is the best I have eaten in Edinburgh so far. The delivery was very quick and the food quality is fantastic. 5 stars from me!

Good quick delivery but food was awful. Japanese dumplings were cold and soggy with something congealed at the bottom of the tub, couldn't even eat. The salt and chilli chicken bits were literally just chicken dippers cooked with some onion. No spice or salt and pretty tasteless, had about 2 and binned the rest. Really disappointing

So disappointed with my meal. Not what I would expect for £28 worth of food. The ramen was cold, bland and stodgy. The king prawn tempura sushi was also flavourless and starchy. I so wanted to enjoy this and was looking forward to it but it just made me sad.

While I in general have liked Ichiban's food, I must admit to being somewhat disappointed with the vegetable yakisoba and spring rolls---particularly for the price. My disappointment is due to two things: (1) the lack of variety of vegetables in the yakisoba, some carrots and bok choy, I think, and (2) the lack of volume of vegetables in the spring rolls---they were like flat pieces of deep fried pastry. I would like to see a wider variety of vegetables in the yakisoba, e.g., the some red bell peppers, green bell peppers, noticeable onions, etc. And I would like to see the spring rolls have some "spring" to them---some volume and some color, with crispier fillings perhaps. For £30, I could have gotten a lot more food and higher quality, more flavorful food from one of many Indian take-aways.

Food arrived cold and even though Just Eat displayed food was delivered at 23:30 it didn't arrive until 45 minutes later at 00:15.

The food was ok. The rice tasted like normal rice, felt like was missing some rice vinegar or something. The miso was very watery so no much flavour. The chicken and pork bits were nice but not enough in proportion to rice. The egg was rather pale.

It is a real shame to have been ordering for this restaurant every week, and receive a very disappointing set of sushi, almost no salmon, on the salmon roll, rice very badly cooked, and is a shame cause it used to be really good.

The Ramen was a pale sort of chinese imitation. Same the udon. The miso soup just water. The inari was off. What a terribile dinner.

Consistently good, I've never been disappointed with the food and the service is always polite.

Prompt, friendly delivery however very disappointed with the food. Ramen had little or no taste and katsu chicken had a bitter taste to it. Unfortunately the only okay item was the dumplings.

Love my Japanese food and this was first class. Will use again and probably visit too. Whole family loved it.

I wish we had read reviews on Trip Advisor, before ordering online, indicating as if this restaurant sells Chinese food. 'Japanese' curry did not resemble that of the traditional Japanese dish at all. I am not entirely sure but pork ribs tasted as if they had been microwaved rather than freshly prepared. Chicken & vegetable dumplings were average yet gummy and not crispy, hence we doubt they were freshly made either. Perhaps other meals resemble Japanese cuisine more. We are accustomed to Asian cuisine and the meals, that we ordered, were, from our subjective viewpoint, not worth their price.

Food was really good, only thing that let it down was the soft shell crab tempura. There was four pieces of vegetable tempura and one super small crab tempura for almost £10. Ridiculous. That said everything else was really good

Ichiban is my favourite place to order Japanese food from, big portions and always piping hot. I even ordered my food separately from my partner once (about half an hour between orders) and they managed to deliver both orders together, wonderful service and always very polite and helpful when I've been into the shop itself.

It was hot and filling but it had no taste and was very basic. We were unimpressed and would not recommend this place for a takeaway.

Pork tonkatsu was amazing but the Salmon and Avocado Maki I ordered disappointed me. It’s like 90% rice!!! There was barely any salmon and avocado in it.

The food was amazing thank you! First time had miso soup I could tell had flavour, and the sushi was lovely and fresh, will definitely be ordering again.

A wee bit later than expect but the food was great. This was the first time they have been late and we have ordered a number of times.

Tamago slices and Miso soup was great. Preordered meal for 7:30pm and was on time which is also very good. However, the sushi rice was very sour for some reason and didnt have a balanced seasoning of vinegar and sugar. There was very little fish used in the Chirashi sushi for £13.50 and it didn't taste the freshest. Salmon sashimi was OK but also didn't taste the freshest... All in all, probably wouldn't order the Chirashi sushi again but might try again for the Tamago slices and see if the fish freshness was a one off thing.

Delivery wasn't too late and the food tasted nice. However, there was too much rice and not enough filling. This is the reason I'd not order from here again. There are less expensive options which I believe to be better value for money.

We ordered food for 3 people to be delivered through the Just Eat app at a total of £70. we were informed it would take an hour to arrive, which is fine, but it was actually closer to an hour after the designated time when it arrived. When the delivery person eventually found the correct buzzer, 3 very hungry tummy's ran to the door to eagerly await the delicious food! Unfortunately, they were to be sorely disappointed by the most appalling meal i have ever had. Firstly, the 3 miso soups had completely come out of their containers and were sploshing around the bag. I understand soup is hard to transport, but if you cannot guarantee its safe passage...don't offer it. Losing the soup wasnt the end of the world, we had yummy gyozas, curry, teriyaki and all sorts awaiting us....again to be sorely disappointed. The food was cold for starters, the chicken a poor excuse for the meat. It was completely inedible. I understand there can be one of situations, but this a customer service providers opportunity to shine with how they make it up to you. Upon calling the restaurant despite a 20 minute conversation we got no where. i was told i lived too far away fro mthe restaurant so of course it was not warm (!), again, if they cannot deliver food they are proud of, do not offer the service! I was told the manager didn't speak English so i couldn't escalate the complaint or be refunded. In the end I gave up, we did not eat the food. Cut a long story short, if you want a good Japanese, avoid Ichiban at all costs

Tom yam was thick and prawns were off.. inedible the "yaki soba" was a fairly poor chinese veg noodle thing...gloopy msg fest when I asked if the chef was chinese the nice waitress admitted he was.. and asked if I had wanted Japanese food?! It was cold and unwelcoming and they refused to take the rotten prawn soup off the bill .. and when the bill came it has "the happy Chinese at the top of the printout" .. 'authentic japanese' - this is not.

Nice friendly waitress who did her best but....where do I start? Food was very poor - duck tasted old and nasty, noodles fair. Soups not good. Unwelcome room - so cold that staff wore big jackets! Drinks? 2 glasses of pinot Giorgio came with bubbles in the glass - wine with water! Even the Saki tasted like it was watered down... Whole experience got worse after a visit to the toilet- carpeted stairs down disgusting...like someone rolled an oily barrel down there. Then the Ladies.... dirty toilet, dirty sink, old nappies sitting on a baby changing table. Phew... Then to top it all, not even cheap. Never again. At least clean the toilet - absolutely no excuse.

Gutted as this is pretty local to me and hoped to find a good Asian takeaway place near me but the food was bad. Staff were lovely and helpful but the dishes that I picked, which are regular choices for me, are probably the worst I have ever tasted. It actually tasted like it was off. Had to throw most of it away, the smell from it was weird. A dish which does not usually have mushrooms, as I hate them, was full of huge mushrooms. Hopefully not all their dishes are like this but it was enough for me not to return.

Often eat from ichiban. Their food is very good in general, but their sushi is fantastic. Freshly made for every order and extremely tasty. Definitely recommend.

I tried to order online using the “just eat” app. It was 2pm and the estimate waiting time for delivery was 30-45 minutes, but when I completed the order it was confirmed for 3pm, so 1 hour later. At 3:15pm, the order still hadn’t arrived and so I contacted the restaurant, who told me that the food would come “within the next 30 minutes”, which would now update the delivery time to 3:45pm at best, nearly 2 hours after I ordered! I cancelled the order as I had to leave by that time. Do not order online unless you want to wait for hours!

Wir kamen gegen Mittag gegenüber im Hotel an und wollten anschliessend entspannt den kulinarischen Feierabend einläuten - praktischerweise war das Ichiban offen. Der Ramen sowie die beiden Biere waren sehr lecker, wie so häufig in Edinburgh war Kartenzahlung möglich - hurrah! Die Bedienung war mit ihrem Smartphone beschäftigt, hat sich aber schnell von uns "ablenken" lassen - so haben beide Seiten Ihre Ruhe :-).

I have many Chinese in my life but this was the worse ever. Starter Duck with pancake should be fat with pancakes. Lemon chicken and King prawn sweet and sour not even edible and was cold when delivered, Complained to the Chinese not even interested said they don't do refunds or any compensation, Do not use the restaurant ever they do not give a s,,,, got your money wish i had paid my card I woudl have cancelled and would rather pay bank charges. .

I never review any take-away in all of my reviews as I thought it’s usually a comfort food but this is definitely a false advertisement. My partner usually order take away here as he likes the vegetarian maki and today I decided to order Prawn Tempura and it was a cheat. I only get 2 prawn and the rest are vegetable, even my partner who loves vegetable only eat the sweet potato tempura that was on it. What a shame putting prawn tempura and only have 2 prawns. Definitely not going to order here again.

I have ordered from just eat two starters and rice which costed £15.80 with delivery. Although it is not cheap I hoped for a good meal. I placed my order at 18.21 and received it at 20.10! The girl on the phone said it was because of traffic, however the distance between the restaurant and the delivery address is about 2.5 miles, therefore by walk it could have been delivered faster. I was given a can of fanta and irn bru as an apology which I didn't need nor like it. I was still very patient and polite and did not ask for anything else nor made a huge deal about the extreme delay. However the food came stone cold (not even a bit warm), and the chicken katsu which should have come with the katsu curry sauce came without any sauce. Also the menu did not say there will be seaweed as garnish and I don't eat any type of seafood, luckily it is not an allergy so I could just scrap it off, however it tasted with seafood. After all this, I have asked the girl who was in contact with me by sms to refund my meal, she said her manager will contact me later. I am still waiting nearly 24 hours later. I do not recommend this restaurant, at least not for takeaway. Very poor meal and treatment of customer.

Ordered a simple takeaway from Ichiban which came quickly and was nice and hot. Went for the beef curry and house special chow mein. Good portion size and very tasty - will be a bit more adventurous next time. Everything as it should be.

Neither me nor my bf has tried many Asian restaurants in Edinburgh. But must say that the quality of food was really good, with nice, thick slices of salmon sashimi (yum!)

Really disappointed, I've ordered from here quite a lot in the past, but the last couple of times I've ordered I've been disappointed. Last time they were 30-45mins late, then even after having left delivery instructions (which I copy and paste and give out to every takeout I get), they couldn't find me - so I had to talk down the road in my PJ's to get my order. This time it was 45-1hr late, saw the driver (with the new app) head to the other side of town before getting here, no apologies or anything. I seemed surprised when I asked for my change... When I open my food, fishy water goes everywhere, doesn't look good, eatable but would never order again from here.

Delicious sushi - the salmon and avocado maki and spicy salmon maki were delicious - although these were California (inside-out) style rolls. Delivered within an hour and friendly delivery driver. The ingredients seemed really fresh too. Would order again!

It didn't arrive at all and when I went to contact the restaurant they didn't pick up and so I decided to check online when they are open and it turns out they aren't open just now. So how I managed to place an order and get 'restaurant has delayed your delivery by 5 minutes' is a mystery to me but I am dissapointed that I was able to order and be under the misconception that I was ordering when they weren't even open.

The order was late from the time that it was expected but I still didn't wait long at all, around an hour and 20 mins which is actually really fast for this time of day and it being sushi that I ordered. The delivery lady was lovely and gave me 2 free cans of coke because she was late which was really nice of her. The food is amazing I got the salmon set and it's really fresh and beautiful. I was worried what the agadashi tofu would be like on delivery but it tastes so good and the batter is still crispy, the eel temaki is beautiful as ever and the salmon skin maki is fantastic too. You can tell they really care for the food they make and I want to say thank you to the delivery lady again as she was stressed when she didn't need to be, definitely the best place to order sushi from in Edinburgh 💖
