What a lovely little cafe. Our first time in Penrith and something about the decor on the outside of the shop drew us in. We had lunch and hot drinks. Hubby having a baked potato and I had soup and a scone. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. Really lovely place. We took cakes away to eat later and pleased to report back that they were excellent too. We'll be back if ever in the area again!

Enormous cup of very good coffee. Tea served in bone china cup - always a point scorer. Cheese scone had lovely consistency and contained whole grain mustard - tasty, but a touch more cheese would have made it even better. Toasted teacake was delicious. Service friendly and efficient. Wish we'd noticed the garden though!

. . . especialmente si te gusta la sopa casera.

We called in to Penrith for a break from the M6 looking for lunch. So delighted to find this first rate cafe serving wonderful soup and excellent sandwiches. And at a reasonable price and with very friendly service. My wife had Cumberland ham salad sandwiches and I had egg mayonnaise. We both ate a spicy paprika tomato soup with potatoes, Patatas Bravas I think it was called. Absolutely delicious. The chalkboard menu offered five sorts of sandwiches and five types of soups, choose one from each, all at £4.50 per person. I can fully recommend this splendid place for soup and sandwiches. Visiting Penrith with an anglophile American friend, he said he was determined to find 'the quintessential British tea room'. Walking into the Ice Cream Garden and Tea Room, we knew we had actually done it! Sitting in the garden, enjoying the sunshine, serenaded by a bird on a nearby roof, we consumed probably the finest soup in northern Britain, [lovingly made by the owner's daughter], accompanied by delicious sandwiches. The little establishment has a delightfully quirky charm, my American friend and I were enchanted, and I recommend it without any reservations.

We tried to visit here on Bank Holiday Monday but they were closed so we revisited on our last day staying near Penrith. They had a lovely selection of soups and we managed to find seats in the main shop. There are more tables in the rear courtyard but as the smokers go there, it wasn't for us.The staff were very friendly but a little disorganised and it felt as though they were struggling to cope a bit. When we left one of them mentioned that the owner was away and they were covering so that helped explain it a bit. The food came promptly, as did the drinks and I really enjoyed all of mine. The creamy vegetable soup and cheese sandwiches were lovely, and at £4.50 all in it was excellent value. My milkshake was nice too.

We finished off a short break with a trip to Penrith and enjoyed a family lunch together at this quaint tea shop. A wide selection of homemade soups were available, including the unappealing sounding, but intriguingly popular sprout soup! The service was excellent, as was the food which was tasty, fresh and wholesome. The soup and sandwich combo included a generous bowl of bacon and lentil soup which was filling, tasty and reasonably priced at £4.50. As a coffee geek I opted for a mug of tea because there was no indication of whether they serve fresh brewed or instant. However we all enjoyed the meal and would happily recommend. On the day of our visit the weather was cloudy so we opted to sit inside, although the tea garden looked pleasant and inviting. Our family decided to visit this café on our day trip in penrith and this stood out as very pretty and we are big fans of vintage also , well when we entered we had a 10 minute wait for someone to serve us when we were served we they did not notify us that there were no plain scones left so we ordered a plain scone and a fruit scone well they both turned up as fruit scones however we brought up this issue to be told there were no plain scones the woman just explained to us she would take it off the bill. By this time the whole family had the correct order apart from 1 of us who waited 25 minutes and the staff had to be prompted we had ordered a pot of tea even after that we had a 10 minute wait for the actual pot of tea to arrive when we had finally got the tea it was fine.We were about to go pay and the woman shouted at the youngest employee to come serve us as she went outside to go look at a baby which we thought was highly unprofessional! especially when we were about to pay and we all had that bad experience we are very disappointed with this place as I may add we were the only customers in the café! and still received bad treatment! also our waitress not knowing about common things on the menu appears there has been a high lack of training! otherwise the café is quite pretty and loved the vintage appearance :) but the experience was appalling

I've visited here a few times and its always been a lovely experience, - good food, well presented and great friendly service. Today my partner and I decided to get a takeaway lunch from here, he had a bacon, brie & cranberry panini which he said was very nice and I ordered a baked potato with cheese tomato and ham, - I was very dissapointed. Firstly there was no ham at all, just cheese (most of which wasnt in/on the potato) and some very roughly cut large chunks of tomato thrown beside the potato. There was no garnish or side salad and it was very unappetizing. I don't know if perhaps they have employed new staff or if whoever put my baked potato together was just having a terrible day, but either way I would expect more from any food outlet.
