Hungry Bear in Isle of Wight

One of the best roast dinners we have ever had. We had the roast sharing platter and it was excellent. Meat was perfectly cooked, and the potatoes were amazing. The platter came with plenty of trimmings, which were all great. I especially enjoyed the roast carrot and the red cabbage. A very filling meal, we didn’t need dessert.

We had the sharing roast plate. Three meats, Yorkshire puddings, pigs in blankets, roast parsnips, carrots , potatoes and fantastic red cabbage.

Lovely Beef roast dinner, we will return, plenty of options. Friendly staff & nice and clean. Service was brilliant we didn’t have enough room left for a dessert!!

Repeat visit on our annual trip to the Island. The Crown and Bear never disappoints. Great service,with a smile, excellent roast beef meal, the beef was so tender and plenty of it. Can't fault it. Roll on next year. Thankyou

Great local pub with a chilled out atmosphere. Their roasts are the best and the other dishes we had were really nice. Recommend booking, expecially on a Sunday. Limited on beers, no local ale. Great place for a family or romantic meal. Lots of history on the walls to look at. No parking but there is a car park up the hill, only takes cash!

1st time visit.. absolutely beaut meal… had a job to shift it all. Roast Pork… very tasty tasty tasty. Polite and friendly staff. 10/10. In those immortal words… “ I’ll be back “

10/10 doesn’t do this place justice!!!we come every year and it never disappoints !!! The roasts are to die for !! We live in London and we haven’t found a roast that comes near !! For freshness, choice, quality and you also to top it off have the staff !!My son tried your burger today instead of the roast this too was so freshly cooke with the best quality meat !!!!It’s a restaurant not to miss out on if your on the island

We came here last minute without booking but the staff were super helpful and able to accommodate us. We all agreed it was the best roast we have ever had and the prices were reasonable too! We will definitely return

Very tasty food in a lovely building with great staff. They serve roasts all week and so epic burgers, what’s not to love. Large tables and do not feel cramped in, I’d highly recommend visiting 👏🏼

Visited here last night with another family. Made us very welcome from the minute we arrived. Food was amazing and very generous portions. My peppercorn chicken was lovely and the mixed roast was awesome. Well worth a visit if you’re in the area. Thanks again

Visited here during a trip to the Isle of Wight and so glad I did! Unfortunately the first day we came for food we arrived after kitchen closing time, but the manager was really friendly and recommended us other places to go which were open for food. We decided to come here earlier the next day to get food. The manager recognised us, was really lovely, and we managed to get our Sunday roasts in. The meat was cooked perfectly, presentation was delightful and honestly the whole meal was delicious! Friendly service and good food. I’d highly recommend visiting the Crown & Bear. ☺️

Fit us in last minute which was great, went for the sharing roast dinner platter and it was incredible! All staff lovely too- really attentive hard working young girls on a busy Sunday. Can't wait to come back.

Visited for dinner to celebrate a 70th birthday, 17 guests, didn’t pre order and every meal came out perfect, hot and incredible. Not one thing wrong. Ages ranged from 1 to 70, all needs catered for perfectly, very attentive, friendly staff and super helpful

Our family came here for birthday celebrations, there was 17 of us in total including children. We ordered a variety of meals, they all came out together, piping hot and absolutely delicious, not one person had a complaint about their food. I enjoyed a brisket of beef with creamy mash and long stemmed broccoli, it was incredible. The staff were all so attentive and helpful. Children were provided with activities and writing boards to keep them entertained. Highly recommend and will be back next time we visit the island.

Great food. However I can't eat a large portion but wasn't allowed a child's portion which I think is not accommodating at all to small apertures. Was given a smaller portion but charged the adult price. Pure greed on their part

This place is wonderful. Really old building in Brading. Great atmosphere and staff that really look after you. We went for dinner earlier in the week which was excellent and the staff went out of their way to accommodate us and our dogs. We had been told about the Sunday Roast being superb by other people during our trip, so promptly booked up and returned. Roast beef - wow. The meat was excellent, melt in the mouth. Ordered cauli cheese as a side, which didn't disappoint. Definitely a place to go for food and, if you can, Sunday lunch as it's worth every penny. We look forward to returning on our next trip over.

They don't accommodate for smaller appetites. Will make you up a smaller dinner but charge adult prices. Wouldn't allow an adult a child's portion. Why? What's the reasoning. Waited ages for food which was pretty good for pub grub.

Wow! Just had the best roast dinner I've had in a long time. Fresh, tasty and a huge portion! Make sure you add the cauliflower cheese. Lovely place with friendly service staff. Will definitely be returning.

We waited for 45 minutes for our food, but it was worth it. The staff were apologetic, as they had a big party of gest. The portions were big, and they gave us extras compliments. Can't complain about the food. I would recommend this place.

Shepherd's pie is very tasty. The hamburger was great. Special thanks to the team, they noticed that we were taking orders at the table for the first time. I highly recommend getting to know real English cuisine right here.

We popped in for some lunch after reading the Google review and we had a warm welcome, asked if we wanted to sit in the bar area. We both had burgers and it was excellent. The main lady was great, serving staff fast and efficient. 100% recommended.

Had dinner at 12:15 today. Staff were very accommodating to our requests. Food was delicious. Scampi x2, cod loin and burger. Ok, no car park but the public car park is about a minutes walk. The atmosphere was great, felt calm. Even liked the music playlist. Thank you.

Omg.!!!! This is a MUST visit pub if you want to either lift your day or lift your holiday. !!! Steak, cook perfectly, tasted fantastic.! Breaded chicken in sauce, huge portion, high quality chicken and melt in the mouth, sauce was 1st class Shepherds pie, This is a quality lamb dinner, disguised as a shepherd's pie.!!! Chunks of quality lamb in a lovely gravy covered in mash, not mince.!!! Breaded mushrooms, fresh perfectly cooked chunky mushrooms in a very tasty herby crumb, really addictive.!! Perfect if your a veggy.!! Fantastic addition if your not.!

Sadly, not what we expected. Nice waiter, food was ok, drink ok. Place, doesn't feel finished off. No car park attached to it. Menu was only sunday roast and couple of other dishes. Nothing much to pick from, sadly. Seemed little fast, the food, to be done "freshly". Pitty. Price didnt reflect the food. Anyhoo. On to the next one.

10/10 all round experience. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who went above and beyond to make sure we had a great evening. Great atmosphere and excellent food. 100% recommend.

Visiting the island for the day with family and found this place on google maps and decided to give it a try based on its high rating. One the best meals I’ve had in a long time, all four us ordered different dishes and clean plates all round. Kitchen is semi open plan which gives confidence in the chefs and their ability. I went for the shepherds pie which wasn’t traditional in the sense it uses chunks of lamb leg rather than lamb mince but it was delicious. Food was good value for money, large portions and friendly staff.

Great food, loved the garlic mushrooms followed by a juicy steak. Prices are well pitched, not a rip-off! Service was warm, friendly and polite. We'll definitely be going back.

Finding this pub was a lovely surprise & we all had a different main meal which were all delicious & served by Dean who was very professional & friendly. We will definitely be returning. We would encourage everyone stopping in Brandon to taste the fantastic food on offer.

Absolutely amazing. My partner and I visited for Sunday roast. We had the sharing platter for two. When the waitress bought it over I was stunned. The meat was tender and plentiful, the veg was hot, the gravy fantastic, even the parsnips are good! There was one potatoe that we couldn't eat, but the waitress wrapped it up for me to take away 🤣. All in all, outstanding place with food to match, would definitely recommend and visit again.

Such a lovely place. The food was incredible, and the service was amazing. I wanted the pork belly special, but I was informed that they were sold out, but then was offered an alternative pork belly made by the chef just for me. It was super flavorful, cooked perfectly. I cannot recommend this place enough.

What a fantastic find whilst navigating the island - such a hidden gem, absolutely fantastic service, made us feel really welcome even though we hadn't booked, food was absolutely amazing, piping hot, great portions, tasty, so much so we all ate every single morsel, including The Teens..... Definitely worth a visit, loved it there!!!

Greeted by Dean and shown to a fantastic window seat and then shown the specials board which had a great selection. We ordered the lamb shepherds pie and it’s Up there with one of the best lamb shepherds pies I’ve ever had. Also the peppercorn chicken was delicious. Fantastic service all round cheers guys.

The newly refurbished and renamed venue is a great improvement . It is an old building and a little chilly but the welcome was warm . More vege options would be better as there were none on the specials board but they did offer to add more if we pre booked it . We will be going back again . Bev & Paul

We had a lovely Sunday roast at The Crown and Bear. Went for the half a chicken option and ended up with chicken breast, and the roast potatoes were a little soggy, hence the 4 stars. That said, I would go again.

From the moment we stepped in to the moment we left such friendly and welcoming service. We sat in the dog friendly area and our dog was offered a bowl of water, which is a nice touch. Nice to have a dog friendly area and not dog friendly area to eat as not everyone wants to eat with dogs! Seating areas really nicely done , a cosy feeling. I ordered the pork roast from the specials board and my husband had sausage and mash. All the food was lovely . My husbands sausages were excellent as was the onion gravy. My pork was so melt in the mouth. Perfect portions. Very good value for money and a lovely visit. We will definitely be visiting again.

Do not leave without trying the cheesecake.. my son’s words, Best cheesecake he’s ever tasted.. great food and stunning transformation of a hysterical building..well done

Absolutely amazing Sunday roast today, as we were there we booked in again! Can't wait to get back and really excited for the re-brand!

We were really looking forward to our visit as it was a christmas gift. As a non meat eater I knew the choice was limited but I opted for the veggie roast. We were impressed with the portion sizes but honestly the food was disappointing. The veggie option was slimy mushrooms in a Yorkshire pudding. I hate mushrooms. The veg was just too big. A whole stick of brocoli. An entire parsnip and the cauliflower cheese looked like it had been reheated or sat for some time. The red cabbage was delicious though, as were the roast potatoes. Sadly the food wasn't piping hot and honestly I don't think my meal was worth the very high price tag. £60 for two mains, two soft drinks and one pudding. It seemed to me they've put quantity over quality.

We went for the first time with friends on new year's day. What a lovely place, very spacious clean and tidy. The food was to great, and generous portions. Staff first class. And dog friendly. Love it, our new favourite place for a roast.

Amazing lunch at the Hungry Bear. Had the sharing platter for 3 bears and was a feast. Meat, veg, potatoes, Yorkshire and gravy couldn't fault at all. One of the best roasts we have had in a long time. A really welcoming and friendly place. We will deffo be back!!

Had a lovely meal with the family; the food was outstanding and only outshone by the wonderful and attentive service we received. The portions are huge, well cooked, hot to the table. We had individual roasts but also saw the mouth watering platters passing by our table. It's all about the roasts and guest service.

What a fantastic Sunday roast. We'll cooked meats and plenty of vegetables and gravy. Our first visit today but will definitely come again. Great service and good value too.

We were so excited to try a roast here after seeing the pictures and reviews only to be absolutely let down the food was absolutely awful nothing was fresh apart from the veg and beef, pork chops 🫣 weren't even cooked properly roast potatoes were under cooked or frozen just like the rest of the food. The gravy was like water and on top of that placed all over the food before coming out of the kitchen which shouldn't be done as like Mt partner some people can not stand it so his food was absolutely even before he got to try it. Safe to say it was a huge let down and we won't be coming back

Visited this excellent restaurant twice - the best roast dinner I have had since I was last here two years ago. BIG BIG portions and everything excellently cooked. No visit to the IOW is complete without a visit to the Bear. Does really good puddings too - not that I had room for one. Important note - now in BRADING not as shown in some old guide books. It is not too far from the lovely old church and next to that is the municipal car park.

We booked Wednesday evening 20th September for a meal to The Hungry Bear that I had seen online before we arrived for our week's holiday on The IOW. It was going to be the highlight meal of the week. So we dolled ourselves up. Even though it was very heavy drifting rain and wind blowing a like hurricane, we travelled 25 mins to it. Had to park in a car park and pay, 2 mins walk away from the restaurant. In that time, we were blown to bits and our clothes were soaked. Got to the restaurant, and there was a closed notice on the door, which said the porkies did not arrive with a smiling emoji. They might find it funny but i can assure you, we certainly did not. When I booked over the phone, they asked me for my mobile number. So why the hell didn't they ring me to inform us it was closed? The worst bit was that we then had to find somewhere else for dinner. It's not easy in a storm, and you usually have to book everywhere. We did get in somewhere, but the car park for that was flooded, and to cap it all, that is what ruined our shoes. I am fuming. We don't believe in letting anyone down by not turning up even in such dreadful weather conditions, so I believe they should have let us know, when they decided to close the restaurant. 🤬🤬🤬 xxx

I came here two years ago and loved the food so had to visit again. They now have a more structured menu (two years ago they had some daily specials) but I did not need to venture away from the roast which is what they are famous for. It was still as good as it was a couple of years ago. Staff were friendly and accommodated my needs.

We had two delicious roasts tonight, food is tasty and healthy, enjoyed the nut roast, polite and caring service, the restaurant is beautifully decorated and clean, thank you chef for serving us dinner even if you were fully booked! We were like two hungry bears! 😉

Best place on the island for a Sunday lunch or dinner. Also child friendly with super nice staff. Good. Had the trio of meats beef was my favourite.

Absolutely brilliant a full homemade roast midweek (and sunday) booking essential. Full of flavour and a full plate. What's not to like. Good quality food cooked a traditional way with plenty of roast potatoes, parsnip, carrots with a huge substantial Yorkshire pudding (not filled with air so no chance of your yorkshire flying off your plate!) Just the sort of roast my mum and nan would cook full of flavour and lots of rich gravy! A real treat for me as I'm the one cooking the roast at home. Nice friendly atmosphere. Obviously all places have slip ups and I did notice the table next to me were waiting a long while for their meals but we had no problem. The owner even has a roast delivery option on the island. Handy for locals and holiday makers self catering without transport. It's not always easy to get a roast dinner in holiday season so look no further Hungry Bear Brading is a must. Wish we had a Hungry Bear local too.

Nice restaurant , contemporary and modern, albeit tables close together. For roast meals, very good, but for children the alternatives are few and too rich to enjoy ( the worse macaroni cheese were we confirmed by our 12 year old - who left most of the serving). Dogs, allowed in , but why not sit in separate area, the couple next to us were invaded by a hound whose owners deemed it acceptable fir there pooch to keep going under the other guests table of sitting up begging. We were fortunate to leave just before the issue got heated. Roast good, not good for children and beware you may have a dog n very close proximity

The staff were so friendly and attentive and the quality of the food and drink was exceptional. Our waitress was so attentive and I highly recommend her as she genuinely cared about ensuring we were looked after and had a great deal of pride in doing her job well and I can’t not praise her enough (unfortunately I did not get her name our booking was in the name of Jeanette table for 2 @ 18:00 6/9/23). I will be recommending you to absolutely everyone and will be including a recommendation in our information pack in our rental property.

First time eating here and it was awesome definitely going back.

Visited with my Brother for Sunday lunch. The overall experience was excellent. The food was fantastic and we both said it was probably the best roast dinner we had ever had. We had the sharing platter and it was delicious. Most of the diners seemed to be having the same and looked as happy as we were. The staff were very welcoming and the ambiance great.

We used to love the Hungry Bear but sadly we didn’t enjoy our meal there this evening. Perhaps the change to a ‘roast house’ just isn’t for us. We didn’t order any roasts (it was a warm late summer evening so no-one felt like one). Our teenage children thought the ribs tasted like churros (perhaps too much cinnamon?), the steak we ordered rare was medium/well done (although tasty) and the crumble was inedible (bizarrely it tasted like gravy - I think the cream might have been on the turn). The waffles were a hit though. The staff were very sweet but over attentive (we were asked about 10 times if our meal was ok). Please bring the old Hungry Bear back! It used to be a cosy and reliable eaterie.

It was ok…we were expecting more based on the reviews. Be warned first that the only parking is up the hill in a separate car park - cash only!! We don’t carry cash normally, but luckily did that day. As a Roast House, I was hoping the Hungry Bear had proper roast chicken: crunchy skin, juicy leg meat on the bone with wings etc - was just a standard skinned chicken breast like anywhere which was a huge let down for the adults. The roast potatoes were very overcooked but we ate them through hunger. A little overpriced in all, but that’s what we always say when it’s not brilliant. As a local islander, we just won’t visit again. Shame.

Googled for a birthday meal while on the isle of white. What a great find. The food was excellent and the staff so welcoming. Was no rush to leave the restaurant. Would return again definitely.
