Have reviewed 29 bar and Kitchen before and was not impressed then, We decided to give them a 2nd chance after a walk in Tyne mouth, On Tuesday afternoon. That really was a bad idea, there was no one in, that should of been a warning sigh, but the biggest problem and complaint I had was the bar man standing on the bar walking along it with shoes on and no covering on the bar, cleaning the brass glass rake with the glasses still in the rake, This should NEVER be done when the bar is open, if it needs cleaned then do it out of opening hours it is not a important part of the cleaning, ( I just hope they wash all these Glasses before they use them ), There was people coming in and walking back out and to be honest I don’t blame them, I wish we had. I also suspect the other reason that it is empty is because most people only come in the watch the sport on tv as the tv are permanently on sports channels, there is no atmosphere the staff are unfriendly, if fact it seems like an effort for them to serve you, this does not make an inviting and pleasant place to spend your money and time, I am sorry to say as all places need our support, But we will not be give them a third chance. Come on bar and Kitchen wake up you have the potential for a cosy enjoyable pub you just don’t seem to care, or is it the chain pub that owns this bar don’t care, and the staff have lost all intressed

Bad idea Did not realise that Newcastle football match was on TV. Don’t have a problem with people enjoying watch the football but why did they have 5 TV on in ever part of the pub even 2 on 1 wall, all with the loud sound on. Not ever one likes a drink with loud TV on. There was no reason why they could not turn off at least two of the TV, Especially the TV beside the window and fire, and in the small lounge. The pub is 29 Pub and Kitchen but they do not serve food and have not for a long time. It is now more of a sport Bar with 5 TV on most of the time. The other times there in hardly anybody in with no Atmosphere. The point is if you want a quiet drink with food, and staff that want to serve you with a smile and make you feel welcome, They defiantly did not make us feel welcome. Then consider going somewhere else. Will we back things will have to improve before we will return

We were a group of 8 going for lunch, we couldn’t sit together which was no problem, safety first. We were sat at 2 tables with a good space between us, couldn’t really carry out a conversation but we figured sticking to social distancing was better. Started off ok but went rapidly down hill after that. We ordered drinks and they arrived quickly. We had to shout for staff to take our food order as we had sat there for around 45 minutes with no staff coming near. Started ordering food and found that their food delivery hadn’t arrived and they had very little available on an already limited menu, even the cold sandwich choice of 3 fillings was reduced to 1 which was cheese! Food arrived, sandwiches were dry, chips were cold. During our time there a couple were seated on a table next to us and were much closer to us than the other table in our group, so the distance between our tables didn’t make a lot of sense then. We complained about the cold chips and they did some more free of charge, but we had eaten most of our food by then. The toilets were restricted to one in at a time, which would be understandable if there was only a few cubicles, but the ladies has 4 cubicles and sinks so 2 could have used them safely and socially distanced. Worse still about the very poor food is they are not doing the half price eat out to help out scheme. It wasn’t busy but I’m not surprised given our experience. In short, you’ll have no issues with social distancing as you’ll probably be the only ones there if they continue as they are.

My daughter reserved a table for 6 people for a family night out. When she made the table reservation she was not made aware that we needed to wear masks to enter the pub, if knew this we would have all brought one. One of our party did not have a mask with them so we were refused entry. It was literally about 8 steps to get in the doorway then were allowed to take the mask off. We had travelled 10 miles for our nigh out. Very disappointed with this pub. We managed to get a table at Head of Steam the door staff very professional and followed covid19 rules. I will not be surprised if this pub goes out of business.

Came here today for a late lunch with my daughter. Ordered two hot beef sandwiches with chips. A coke and a black currant and water as I was driving. The clue should have been the Luke warm water I was given with my cordial. The food arrived quite quickly but the positives stopped there, I have never been served ready sliced 1 millimetre thick supermarket chiller “beef” in a hot beef sandwich EVER , and if you think that sounds bad you should have tasted the brown water that could never be described as gravy. Do yourselves a favour if you are ever in Tynemouth and you are feeling peckish, give Hugo’s a wide berth It was appalling 😡.

We visited Hugo's for lunch today and were really impressed by the prices of the lunch menu. We ordered a fish finger sarnie and fries, a sausage ciabatta and fries and a cheeseburger, also with fries. The staff were lovely and really friendly and at £31 for three meals and three drinks, it was excellent value. Despite the pub being quiet, we waited ages for our food. 40 minutes later I had to ask where it was and it arrived a few minutes later. The fish finger sarnie was good, the sausage ciabatta average and the burger was so salty that I had to leave half of it. There was no check on how our food was and due to tje delay we only had 10 minutes left on our parking ticket, so we didn't have a chance to raise the issue - we ate as much as we could before we had to rush off. We'd come back for drinks but wouldn't eat here again.

It’s a bar. It’s in a good location. It has a few seats outside to watch the world go by from. It should be scoring 5 stars. But has to lose a couple because i) the gents toilet had an out of order sign but no indication of an alternative. Having asked at the bar it seems you have to use the ladies. Not sure what the ladies thought of me leaving the seat up. ii) I heard the barman upset three different customers by not having what they asked for and having no close equivalent either. Bit of a stock control issue?

We took our grandsons out for the day as a treat. The morning at the aquarium was fun and by 12 the kids were getting hungry. We got sat down in Hugo’s and ordered. By 1 o’clock we had not been served. After enquiring where the food was we were told it was being plated up. An adult plate ( nachos) was delivered. Ten minutes went by. We enquired again. The food came out but we couldn’t eat it. The chips were semi raw and badly cooked, the scampi was unidentifiable fish in a crumb, the nachos were covered in slop that had clearly been ladled out of a generic salsa in a jar and inferior cheese. The children were hungry so they ate their hard as nails burger and awful bun and undercooked chips. We were given half our money back but the food was not value for money and this place used to be so much better. I would recommend that future diners walk past. You will be extremely disappointed if you eat here. I was embarrassed to be giving my grandsons such indifferent an eating experience.

The open fire was lovely and we enjoyed warming up after a wild and windy walk. We had the roast sandwiches (I had chicken, partner had beef.) Both were served with chips which I believe were just oven chips? The stuffing in my sandwich was pretty crunchy too which wasn't ideal. The food took a fair while to arrive despite the place not being very busy. If choosing again, I think we'd go somewhere else as Tynemouth has so many great coffee shops and cafes.

Chose Hugo’s to invite Scottish friends who were visiting. I hadn’t realised that the menu had changed so drastically. Not a bad choice, exactly, but so much more restrictive than it used to be. No desserts or coffee available and no fish and chips! Friends had burgers, which were substantial and said they enjoyed. I had the pandora breaded prawns which were nicely cooked, but only four of them and very small. Not good value for money at all. Admittedly, we were early for lunch but the place was deserted for a good while. Frankly, I’m not surprised with the level of competition in Tynemouth. Can’t understand SJF spending so much money on refurbishment last year to offer such poor service. Not very forward thinking!

I used to like SJF pubs but there has been a decline in the last few years which is highlighted by Hugos. The staff were great when we went for lunch, the place is tastefully furnished but the menu as with most of the pubs in the group is abysmal as it does not cater for people who are not too keen on burgers or wraps. My wife and I did settle on a wrap which was tasty but we waited 45 minutes for it to come. Apparently they only have a very small oven and can only do one meal at a time. It seems that SJF are not taking note of the competition which is fierce and generally across the whole of the group are not pricing the menu competitively to attract families. I hope their business blueprint changes before it is too late.

We are regulars at Hugos and indeed many of the Sir John Fitzgerald chain of pub/restaurants. We called yesterday, looking forward to our usual seafood chowder and were shocked when we discovered the menu had been depleted so much so that it was difficult to find something appealing. We chose a bacon sandwich and toasty. The bacon sandwich was ok but the toasty not so. The staff, as usual very good, but appeared as saddened as we were over the change in menu and the empty pub. Whoever made the decision to change the menu will have to live with the consequences of the closure of Hugos as there are plenty more places to go in Tynemouth and we cannot see a future for Hugos unless drastic action is taken soon.

Called in on a Wednesday afternoon there was very few people in which was a surprise as it has always been popular.Yes the new look is lovely, Not rely much has changed just everything is new, and happy to say they have fix the drainage smell in the ladies toilets, The seats and Tables at the window now blocking your view out the window, which is a shame and also makes it darker, also seats all along the bar making it difficult to get near the bar to get served. The staff are all still friendly, helpful and polite so that has not changed. The new menu is reduced, with a price mark up, and not as good as before, mostly sandwiches or wraps I do think that £9.50 for Fried Chicken Sandwich, minute steak sandwich £9.50. And £7.50 for a fish finger sandwich, is a pit on the pricy side and not that appealing they do have a lot of competition in Tynemouth so they will have to be better to get people through the door for food, they only serve food till 4 pm so no evening meals. The outside Area has nice sitting and tables but are a little close together .Really don't understand why every Sir John Fitzgerald pubs you go in to has a different menu, why !!! Briar Dean, Shiremoor house farm, Twin farm, The Chillingham, all have different menu and a lot of different reviews, and not all good, Don't know who is responsible for the menu but suggest that they read these reviews and do something about there menu that are not working, or they will stop getting people through the doors to eat.Would I return yes for a drink you can't fault the friendly polite staff and the location, but not for food do feel they need to improve the menu to get people through the door and that is the reason I only give rating of 3I

Hugos has recently been refurbished and what a lovely job they've done. Everything has been renewed and the toilets have been totally revamped and have a Victorian feel with dark wood, dark green tiles and mosaic floor tiles. The menu on a Sunday has a choice of roast beef, chicken and loin of pork with black pudding and crackling, or fish and chips and scampi. Three of us opted for beef, two had fish and chips and one had chicken. The meals arrived promptly and were piping hot. The dinners were served with huge crisply Yorkshire puddings, new and roast potatoes, carrots, green beans and cauliflower and we had requested extra gravy. The beef was cut thickly and was very tender as was the chicken and there was plenty of it. The veg was cooked just as we liked with a bit of bite, but our friends would have preferred theres to be more cooked. The fish and chips came with mushy peas. The bar has a huge choice of drinks, although they don't have our first choice being Strongbow and John Smiths. Prices are similar to the other bars in Tynemouth. We will definitely return for Sunday lunch in the future.

We sat in a nice window table the staff are very nice, food came as soon as we ordered, Sunday lunch was pricey but worth it as portions are huge (would be good to add a deal such as 2courses for a certain price). Would of loved a dessert such as chocolate fudge cake or apple pie was disappointed for the limited dessert selection. Otherwise it was lovely atmosphere and lovely staff will be back to try the fish and chips which looked delicious

Yet again a lazy chef has taken over a nice pub. Raw ,unpeeled ,uncooked carrots, uncooked green beans. Half cooked roast potatoes and of course the traditional unpealed new potatoes.yuk. Trying to cut through a carrot sent the pork flying from the plate. Be a few years before I go back

Having been adventurous today & explored the surrounding area by bike, we were looking for somewhere to eat, called into Hugo's but saw no-one dining, so decided to try else where & ended up in the Buddha Lounge. The bar is looking a little tired with tatty, dirty carpets, nice staff though, would be a good stop off if in part of a group or on a pub crawl, plenty of seating close to the bar & throughout the pub.

The food here is always very nice as are most SJF establishments. The service is good and the staff very friendly (although there can be a long wait at busier times, we have waited up to an hour). We did think on our last visit that the whole place could do with a bit of a refurbishment to make it a bit more modern and inviting.

To be honest didn`t plan on going into Hugo`s but Ora wasn`t taking bookings till late and had parked up out front where you are limited to only 2 hours stay.Hugo`s is a pub with a surprising larger than normal pub menu. Fair to say I had low expectations, however, these were exceeded by a very large margin. The place was very clean and after placing drinks and food orders the service was excellent and the staff very friendly and attentive. My wife and I both ordered the philly cheese & steak sandwich which was very good but still had room for more so tried the coffee and cake deal for a fiver which was top notch and a very large portion.Hugo`s is also family friendly - the table next to us also received the same level of attentiveness. Definitely recommended and next time I visit I`ll be giving the seafood chowder a bash.

Looked deceptively empty but guess there is a lot of room inside so although we were warned about 30mn wait (after we had ordered), it actually took a lot longer. Not bad as bar lunches go and staff were very apologetic so can forgive them. Would go again.

Went for lunch today with family plus baby. Nice inside and plenty of room round the tables which meant keeping the pram near us was no issue at all and it wasn't in anyone's way. Staff friendly and the fish finger butty was great!

We found this restaurant in tynemouth as we were looking for a coffee shop but instead stumbled over Hugo's we entered the building and as soon as we went in there as a lovely warm atmosphere, the premises was lovely and warm and seating areas were very comfortable. The staff were very welcoming right from the first moment they were not stuck up in anyway and we had a very good chat with them. The service was fast and very efficient and the young girl who served us was brilliant.Could not have asked for better food service and the prices were great too a must visit for anyone, the girl who served us I think her name was Laura and I think it was the manageress she even said that she was her rock excellent service credit to the company.

Have been to Hugo's on numerous occasions and it has never disappoints us. All the Staff are Friendly and polite, Even remember what you Drink. All Food is well cooked. In The Summer it is Lovely to sit out side. Do have one negative point. This point does not effect us but could be a problem for some with access. There is no disabled ramp, only steps leading into Hugo's. There is also a small amount of steps leading into the main parts of the bar. There is a small sitting area just before the steps on the right, if the steps are a problem, but the tables are close together so would be difficult for wheelchairs. This point is the reason I only give 4 points.Would recommend and return. But rely think that the front steps should be addressed.

Would be a 5* rating but for sports TV blasting out in main bar. Having said that, there are quieter sections to sit on. The wine list is top drawer for a restaurant never mind a pub. Staff on the ball & friendly.

My family and stopped for a coffee and so our little one could have their lunch. The problem I found was that the baby changing facilities are located within the female toilets meaning I was unable to change my baby. This is NOT acceptable, it's 2016 and fathers do change their babies nappies.

Went here yesterday after struggling to find somewhere that would be good for kids. Sat down and order within 10 minutes at the bar. Me and the wife had fish and chips, kids had a Cumberland sausage and burger and chips. All the food was fresh and well made not cheap crap like some places. Even the kids food was excellent quality. This experience was brilliant and it's a lovely place with friendly staff and clean, well kept facility's. parking was a pain but that's the councils fault.

Asked if mocktails could be combined with cocktails on the 2 for 1 offer and was told they could so ordered one of each! I was therefore surprised to be charged £12! Was then told he'd made a mistake and they couldn't be combined. When they arrived at the table, the bar man wasn't sure which one contained alcohol! Both tasted like over sweetened lemonade with a tiny piece of lime and some wilting, aged mint! Mojitos? I think not! Will stick to beer and wine in here!

Took my Granddaughter here (Hugo's) with her boyfriend (their choice) for the first time to eat and was pleasantly surprised! I had fish and chips with mushy peas. The fish and chips were very tasty but the peas were very dry. GD had ham, egg and chips, boyfriend had beef burger with chips and trimmings. They both finished them off and enjoyed it. The price was very reasonable and would definitely go back for lunch.I've been plenty of times at the weekend when it's always busy and has an older crowd it's a good place to be!

Great location on Tynemouth high street for cheap cocktails. Thursdays and Sundays offering 2 for 1 @ £5.95 (for 2). Good selection and popular. A decent range of real ales too and not too expensive. Part of the Fitzgeralds 'family', so always a good professional service. A nice terrace to sit in the sun, if you are lucky enough to find a spare seat. A few meal offers, like 'Fish Friday', offering two meals for £15.Plenty of tv's to watch the sports, if that's what you're after.

Came to Hugo's for a few drinks and lunch. My partner and I really wanted Fish and chips, but in a nice setting. It was very nice. I was in doubt as I had read a review saying the fish was greasy. I have to disagree. The batter was beautifully crispy and the cod was white and flaky. The chips, mushy peas and tartar sauce was very good. We had a side order of onion rings and they were the best onion rings I have ever had. The staff were friendly and very accommodating. We will definitely be coming back soon.

We have been going to Beaches & Cream for years and always love it. Today was really disappointing. We arrived at 2.30, nobody greeted us, we had to ask if we could sit down, there were several tables dirty despite 5 staff and lots of empty tables. When we approached the counter to order, we were told the kitchen was closed. You’d think they’d tell customers this before they sat down. One girl was taking orders and having to prepare the order and take it out, whilst 3 other visible staff were chatting, this caused unnecessary wait times. One waiter was hovering around tables, too close, making conversation uncomfortable. It was a really disappointing experience and not what we have come to expect from past experience, we travel over half an hour to go there and wish we hadn’t made the effort. I’m not sure why the kitchen closed so early, if we had known, we could’ve gone elsewhere, but more importantly, we should’ve been told as soon as we came in.

Came here whilst in the area . I had the mince and dumplings ( more gravy than mince , watery mash ) , my wife had the chicken and ham pie ( she wasn't impressed with that either) . When asked about the dessert list, I was told there's a menu on the bar , and basically, go get it yourself . I had the cheesecake, which was OK ( to much middle and not enough top to make the tast of the cheesecake stand out , the wife had the sponge with custard which the sponge was cold , obviously just heated up in the microwave . Will not go here ever again.
