My fourth visit this year. I'm won over and love this place. The food is delicious and cooked with great skill and care. On a beautifully sunny early autumn day, we had a table in the loggia looking out at the spectacular view above the Tamar surrounded by forests and with the extraordinary long herbaceous border to one side. Very enjoyable served by a thoughtful and warm team. Thank you.

We live in Cornwall not too far from Endsleigh, but nearer to the Horn of Plenty. We used to lunch at both places when out for a meal. Of late the former has greatly overtaken the latter so much so that we will no longer be choosing the Horn of Plenty preferring a vastly superior product provided by Endsleigh. I would now rate Endsleigh 5 Star and Horn of Plenty 3. If you are in any doubt try both and experience the vast difference.

Just had Sunday Lunch at this Hotel/Restaurant…What a complete “Ripoff” £29 for one course which consisted of 3 slices of grisly Beef 3 small hard as rock roast potatoes that were not cooked properly 1 had thin carrot again not cooked 2 stems of broccoli again almost raw a spoonful of overcooked red cabbage and some at best warm gravy for £29!!! The remaining meals were no better having had my own restaurant before my retirement I now the difference between fair value for money for well cooked fresh food and being ripped off. If the Polizzi family still own this Hotel then you should be ashamed. Would never set foot in this place again and the only positive thing I can say is that the staff are lovely people and the setting of the hotel is quite beautiful.

A bank holiday, sun was out and wanted to show my guest the gardens with a lounch on the terrace as a treat. Suprisingly quiet when we arrived, yet the maitre de'hotel said it was busy. We ordered coffee and requested lunch menu, adked twice, eventudlly given the wine list, i questioned but was told 'its all in there' so i questioned self. We finally gave up and left the table to pay inside as he didn't return to table. We were charged a whopping £10.13 for two really poor coffees, and not even questioned. Not even a small shortbread or go with it. Price tag did not warrant the coffee. Next door table complained about their lunch so maybe why we didn't get the 'service'. Felt it was a disappointing visit, anticipated something more special. Especially especially after watching The Hotel Inspector with Alex Polizzis high standards. The gardens were beautiful though.

This hotel is absolutely beautiful. The day we arrived we were upgraded to a suite which was bigger than most flats. We had our dog with us and everything is set up beautifully. We had breakfast with our dog in a dining area which overlooked the gardens, all 108 acres of them which are stunning. We went for an hours walk around them and let our dog off lead which was lovely. Food and service excellent. Everywhere spotlessly clean. We will definitely go back.

The food was absolutely delicious and good value. The service was excellent but overall bit on the stiff and starchy side which when the place is small and supposed to have a country house feel it. It led to a slightly restrained atmosphere. Does that come from the staff themselves or from the top? We went because we were staying nearby and we were curious to see inside the former 'cottage' of the Duke of Bedford. Please do something about the hall - it has a forbidding atmosphere to it which I don't think it would have had originally when the place was a family holiday home (or even as a fishing club before the Polizzis came to its rescue). Paint the hall bright orange or something. It's not a good welcome to the place and sets the wrong tone. No one wants to walk on eggshells in a country house hotel. It's a stunning place with a wonderful story to tell. It needs to loosen its corset!

Whilst the food was very good and the gardens are nice, every other aspect was poor. The main waiting staff were very unhelpful and blunt when we asked about taking coffee in the lounge - residents have priority and as guests they wouldn't even consider making space for us. Be aware the atmosphere is like a rest home, staff have no personality, a place for quiet conversations not laughing out loud. If you like atmoshere and a bit of vibe then don't come here it's boring, maybe try one of the chain of Pig hotels, much more fun!

A fabulous and generous birthday tea today at beautiful Hotel Endsleigh. A savoury first course of perfect smoked salmon and coronation chicken sandwiches, with scrummy crab and avocado tartlet, sausage roll and truffled cheese soufflé in a delicate crunchy coat. Followed by a sweet second course of lovely scones, jam and clotted cream, accompanied by three really delicious patisserie style mini-puddings. Pots of top quality tea and lovely, considerate and polite staff. Preceded by a peaceful walk around the picturesque Repton-designed grounds. We’ll definitely be back!

I don’t like to write negative reviews but I feel that my experience of afternoon tea at Hotel Endsleigh last week was so disappointing I had to say something. The waiter was lovely but the maître‘d was blunt to the point of rudeness. When I enquired if there was Ginger & Lemon tea available he replied NO and stared at me, no offer of any other type of alternative tea, just a blunt no. When the food arrived I was expecting something with a bit more theatre, what arrived was 5 savoury elements on a round plate. When the sweet course came it was exactly the same, all the elements just placed on a plate. The whole point of an afternoon tea are the little touches that make it special, if I had just wanted a couple of sandwiches and scones I could have popped to M&S and done it myself. For £35 a head I expected more of an event but it was all really dull, an anti climax not at all what I would expect from such a highly rated establishment. All in all we felt that we were a nuisance just being there.

Went for the gardens, booked afternoon tea, it didn't disappoint!. Met the head gardener Ben. You and your team are doing an amazing job even tho you haven't got the full team. So thank you. A total pleasure. Afternoon tea served by Rob on that beautiful crockery was delicious. We couldn't work out if we preferred it on the simple plate without the faff of the multi layered thing. Started off preferring it then changed our minds after the sandwich fillings left on plate. Anyway worth trying. Thank you

Afternoon tea was most disappointing despite costing nearly £40 each with service. Lovely venue and good service but the food was very mediocre - tasteless sandwiches, overdone scones and dubious cakes. My wife ate very little and asked for replacement scones as the first lot were a bit burnt. Replacements came but alas not much better. The previous time we went there for tea, the food was laid out in the library to take what you fancied but now alas it all comes on one plate as a package

We have been to Endsleigh a number of time and I have to say the grounds and the view are beautiful across the valley is stunning, but the cream tea was a big let down the scones 1 fruit and 1 plain were very over cooked! They should have been a golden brown on top and a light colour around the sides these were a brown all over and very hard. ( not at all like they used to be). I feel they were a bit tight on the jam and the cream to go with the overcooked scones. Would not recommend.

We went for the evening set menu, three courses for £67.50 for my husbands birthday. He hadn’t been before so we arrived an hour early and asked reception to recommend a walk. They were very helpful and explained the walk and gave us a map. The weather was glorious which obviously helps. The walk up to the waterfall was magical. We took our time and arrived back to the restaurant a little late but no bother. We were invited onto the terrace for pre meal drinks and nibbles, a look at the menu and to take in the view of the gardens dropping down to the river. After about 30 minutes we were told our table was ready. The three courses took about two hours which we felt was perfect. The staff are friendly but not in your face, just the right balance. The food was outstanding, beautifully presented with each mouthful bursting with different flavours. My husband was presented with special birthday plate at the end of our meal which was a lovely touch. After our meal we were invited into the lounge but we chose to sit on the terrace again and enjoy the view one last time. We just had the most perfect time 10/10!

Many times we had dinners in this place, and the last time we stayed for four days, sadly no improvement in the ambiance - as it was back in 2019 it still is similarly boring, gloomy and dead quiet, really brings you down, particularly if you are a couple or a small party: it feels as if you are in some sort of institution must eat quickly, quietly and go. One feels even scared to speak- we reduced our voices to whisper, sitting alone in an empty room. Some gentle music would help immensely, and better lighting that envelops. The dining in Endsleigh was and still is the most disappointing and weakest part of the experience. The food is hit and miss, difficult to choose from the limited menu after two consecutive days. Also, our Afternoon tea with friends whom we invited for a get together in this hotel, was not very good - to many sweet offerings and not particularly exciting or tasty, as were the scones, whereas not at all enough sandwiches. Also, like rightly noted by one of the previous reviewers, a senior male member of staff (with pony tail in a scruffy black suit) as always unpleasantly snobby looking down at you - no change there over the years.😐 Probably, we will not be returning soon, perhaps in a few year’s time to check if there is improvement in the dining department because the setting of the hotel is second to none.

Make sure you bring your walking boots and explore the extensive grounds, which are quite magical. Formal gardens, shell grotto, dell with amazing waterfalls and champion trees - do the ‘garden walk’ which takes you right to the top of the valley, with amazing views of the river below and over to Cornwall. A few friends met at Hotel Endsleigh for afternoon tea and to celebrate a birthday. We were all a little disappointed in both the service and sandwiches. Having experience afternoon tea at the hotel on a few occasions we knew what to expect. Usually the service is excellent but we felt this was lacking, having to find someone to ask to refresh our tea. Nobody came to ask if everything was okay either. The sandwiches were not up to their usual standard, with skimpy fillings and therefore more bread to eat. However, the scones and little pie were delicious along with the selection on the cake table. The price has risen to £25 per person and we felt that we had better value and service when the price was £18 per head!

We visited for Afternoon Tea and the most important question, would we go back again, answer yes!The driveway is a mile long and settles you down for a very relaxing experience with very professional and helpful staff. Clearly they want you to enjoy their Hotel. The front door is easy to find but there doesn't appear to be an obvious reception inside. But the Maitre d' appeared within seconds. We decided to risk the wasps and asked for a table outside. We sat at one of the 3 tables just outside the door, under cover with fabulous views of the lavish gardens.0If you want fast food go to McDonalds. If you want a relaxing experience allow time as we took 2 hours. This included a proper choice of tea and coffee served in silverware (fancy tea strainer) and an eat as much as you should buffet of sweet treats (macaroons, mini pavlova, pannacotta, eclairs, mousse). With tea delivered the long plate of sandwiches and scones arrived. The scones, jam and cream allowed for the Devon vs Cornwall debate! So the disappointment and reason for 4/5 was the finger sandwiches. They looked precise but with bland bread the fillings described to us were hard to find. The bread to filling ratio was 99:1! Shame, as the rest of experience was 5/5.Remember to take walking shoes and take a stroll around the gardens. This will finish your afternoon nicely.

I came on my first visit with friends for afternoon tea. Firstly, we had a walk round the lovely grounds - I would advise you pick up a guidebook in the hotel reception before you start. It was a beautiful day and we had been looking forward to sitting outside but, upon being warned that there were a lot of wasps around, we settled on eating inside. We were seated in nice comfy chairs but around a really small table and behind an open door so any view was restricted. The table was totally inadequate and we ended up having to put teapots on the floor and balance plates on our knees. When asked about dietary requirements, one of our party said she was vegetarian - a separate plate of food was brought for her. However, the long delay that ensued was blamed on the preparation of this plate - when it arrived, one sandwich looked suspiciously like ham so we queried it. The plate was taken away and did not reappear for about 15 minutes! The afternoon tea, itself, was not great - the sandwiches were bland, the savouries were basic and the scones overcooked. The saving grace for us all were the gorgeous cakes on offer, although we had to go to a separate room to collect these. Overall, I have had much better experiences at much less cost in other establishments in the area!

Oh, how they love dogs here. They are spread all over the main drawing room with their own bowls of water, just waiting to be tripped over. This is a great dog's home, for which paying guests are charged £240 a night for bed and breakfast. The smell of wet dog permeates the splendid hall and the tiny reception area. Dog owners don't notice a damn thing, of course. Others, with a sense of smell which is anything approaching normal, will reel back at the stink. So certain rooms are scuffed, as you'd expect. The main dining room (in which I didn't see a dog, to be fair) could do with a complete redecoration and renovation. The exterior of this expensive hotel under the mist of a gloomy wintry morning looks grey and foreboding. The service is cheery from young, hard-working staff...so long as you accept that petting a dog followed by serving afternoon tea is perfectly fine. Food on two nights varied between ordinary and reasonably good. Rooms - and we moved from one to another because of the whining of a dog during the evening - are beautifully furnished. But until hotels of this intended quality and price rule out dogs (or give guests who don't want to share their space with kennel-like conditions a warning when booking) the bill is ridiculously high. It was politely pointed out to me that it is a country house for country pursuits. Fair enough. The setting is wonderful and the potential enormous. For dog owners this is thoroughly recommended and your hound will have the time or his or her life. So will you, because the welcome is as warm for your pet as it is for any human. But for the rest of us without leads and plastic bags for dog poo? Avoid.

Lovely afternoon tea to celebrate my mums birthday. Good selection of sandwiches and as many cakes as you like. Really excellent service, nothing too much trouble. Beautiful house looked so lovely candlelit when we left.

We went there for lunch in Nov. 18 on a monday. When we arrived we guessed the reception door (no sign)? We entered into a dark room with no one to greet us so we had to shout hello hello. ! Is this supposed to be Alex Pollizzi 's place? May be she should do the hotel inspector in her own hotel because we felt we were bothering them and the staff keeps on disappearing, hard work for a supposed relax lunch. The grounds around are very nice and the food was excellent but we 'll more than unlikely not come back.

Perhaps our fourth visit over the years, and the best cooking yet. This is sophisticated food in a lovely and very personal, boutique country house hotel.

We were a party of 10 and had a room of our own for our meal. We had pre-booked our choices for the Christmas lunch menu. We were greeted initially and taken to our room for dining and told it was too busy for us to go into the other reception room but we should wait in the room and they would take us through shortly. The room was very nicely decorated and pretty crackers were on the table and a fire was set but not on. After 5-10 minutes without any drinks being offered we ventured out ourselves to one of the sitting room areas. We then ordered drinks. I think I chose less well. I had a smoked salmon dish, beautifully decorated but didn't stun at all. The truffled goats cheese was popular with everyone and I enjoyed the taste of it that I got. I also tasted the liver parfait which was unusually presented in a bowl and was a strong flavoured parfait. For the main course I had Vension which was a large portion and was all rather dark looking and heavy with everything rather similar and no highlights in flavour. The meat was well cooked which I liked. The hake dish a number of people had was popular and thoroughly enjoyed with a flavoursome sauce. There were choices of chocolate dish, parfait or Christmas pudding which we all had. I had the Parfait which was very light, and beautifully decorated and flavoursome. The bread provided was freshly baked and great.

We had dinner for my birthday, we were recommended by friends to dine here. The weather was superb, so we joined the diners outside in the excellent dining area. Our starters were really good, but the mains were both very disappointing, my salmon was nothing out of the ordinary in fact a little bland, my partners beef sirloin was very difficult to cut and extremely tough and by no means the highlight it should have been. We mentioned this when the plates were collected, we were told the chef would be informed - the response back was that it was very sinewy. Nothing further was said or offered to us, we asked for a cheese plate to add to our desserts and this had to be checked for permission. We paid the bill and again nothing was mentioned when we replied to the comment was everything alright.

As we entered the stately home the first thing we noticed was a huge bouquet of flower - unfortunately most of them wilting - not a pretty side.

We returned to Endsleigh knowing that our stay would be perfect, but each time we visit this extraordinary place we are amazed by the combination of outstanding service, hospitality and taste. It is our favourite hotel and the perfect place to unwind. Olga Polizzi has a marvellous sense of design, the hotel is an architectural gem by Wyattville and the Repton landscape is so beautiful. Throw in a marvellously loyal, friendly and hard working staff and you have perfection.

Went here on a wet day for afternoon tea. The location is gorgeous and the hotel has a lot of charm. Were served tea in grand silver service style as you would expect, with very a selection of very nice finger sandwiches brought to the table. A small buffet of cakes scones and puddings is laid on and these were of a fairly high standard - the scones, clotted cream and jam was scrumptious and there were macaroons, chocolate brownies smothered in ganache and little pots of trifle as well. Service was efficient. You can sit in the old hotel or on a couple of different terraces with nice views. One vegetarian in our party who was looked after well. Reasonably priced for a sumptuous afternoon tea.

We made a reservation for afternoon tea to celebrate a friend's 50th birthday. Two grandchildren - almost 3yrs and almost 2yrs of age. Great grandma 94yrs and six other adults of various ages. From youngest to eldest we were all made very welcome and nothing was too much trouble to make our afternoon relaxed and enjoyable. The separate room worked well for the little ones who were very well behaved.

Visited for lunch which was booked for 2pm so we arrived early so we could take a stroll through the grounds and beautiful gardens, well worth a visit. As I was visiting from Australia my brother suggested this hotel as he had been before and rated it very highly. A lovely drive out to Milton Abbot across the moors north west of Tavistock.

It was a nice sunny day so we opted for tea on the terrace. Offer of tea or coffee to drink. we had one of each. First off the coffee was undrinkable. It was made in a caffetier but it was just awful. Changed to tea pretty quickly. There was no difficulty but no was interested as to why I wanted to change. The sandwiches were excellent as was expected but were very delicate and one needed a little extra. Further supplies were offered and taken. The cakes were on a self service table as too were the cream and scones and jam. No limit to what was had and an opportunity to try a variety of lovely cakes. Scones were quite special. Just go there and try them. Staff were courteous and some were quite natural and friendly. The grounds were at there best and a nice walk around them after tea was welcome. The whole thing though good was somewhat expensive, forty four pounds for 2 people. OK for a special but not too often for normally paid people.

Lunch outside on the patio was, as ever, a lovely way to spend the afternoon. The gardens are immaculate and the hotel beautifully maintained. Highlight of the food was the whipped goats cheese and pear starter - such delicate flavours and very pretty on the plate. The risotto was delicious too, all served by very attentive staff. The Endsleigh is a class act but at the same time a place that is relaxed where guests are made to feel at home.

I have already reviewed the restaurant as part of my Hotel review. I would like to add that the food is superb and, thankfully, the portions are small which means that I could enjoy three courses without feeling over-full. It is a case of quality rather than quantity, which is how it should be.

Had noticed a couple of poor reviews on here but decided to go with the flow and booked a table for dinner with family. We were well looked after, the food was good quality, generous positions and served efficiently with a friendly smile. Seems all good to us!

Had an amazing Sunday roast here - service was fab and pub was warm and cosy. I've only knocked a star off as I paid £6.40 for a can of 0.0 guinness and half a lime and soda - which seems quite highly priced
