would normally send a review to trip advisor, however, since I received an email from you directly asking to leave a review, I thought it better to give the review direct to you. We stayed for 3 nights, in room 3 at the sister inn Salutation Arms Appreciate that the building is very old, but the access to the entrance of the building is not good, especially for older people. The two steps down were difficult to use, especially when carrying cases, and with a dog. The stairs upto the bedrooms were steep. The state of the carpet was terrible, stained very badly, obviously from the footfall using it. The fact that it was light in colour didn’t help. The room was large no complaints there, but there were a lot of chips in the painting, and again, the light coloured carpet had stains on it. The en suite, if you can call it that, was the smallest I have ever seen. You could sit on the loo, brush your teeth at the sink, and wash your feet in the shower all at the same time. For the size of the room, the en suite could have been a lot bigger. We ate in the Sally bar the first night, and the meal was very good, the barman was very friendly. Breakfast was at the Farrier, and the cooked breakfast that morning, tasted as if it had been left under a hot plate and was dried up. Dinner that night wasn’t the best either, my husband had the garlic mushrooms and it was like a soup. The lasagne wasn’t the best either. The next two mornings breakfast , the coffee was cold, and we had to ask for a replacement hot pot of coffee. Staff were all friendly and pleasant, however didn’t ask during the meal if everything was ok, even when collecting plates, which is unusual. On checking out, we weren’t even asked if we had enjoyed our stay, again, very unusual. I don’t normally have any issues with where we stay, and would write a good review, but unfortunately The Horse and Farrier, Salutation Inn, just didn’t tick the boxes for us. Update-I am still waiting on a reply to my review from marketing at the horse and Farrier

Great place to stay, eat, drink. So welcoming (dog-friendly) and cosy. Because we have a dog, we stayed in the Salutation Inn, which is literally 1 minute’s walk away. The staff, food and drink were all wonderful. The room in the ‘Sally’ was small but cosy, warm and very accommodating, including tea/coffee facilities, dog bowls and treats. Will definitely stay again; and highly recommend.

The only positive thing I can say about this place is that the dogs like their sausages. 3 out of 4 main meals were dreadful. A dried beef burger and 2 lamb dinners with tough meat. The burger was eaten without complaint but was given a score of 4 out of 10. The lamb dinners were returned and replaced with turkey but for some reason they didn’t include roast potatoes with the replacement meals. We ordered 4 deserts but only 2 were served. A waffle which was acceptable and a sticky toffee pudding which was rock hard and inedible. I assume the chef needs to work on his microwave skills. After we complained they didn’t charge for the inedible desert and took 30% off the bill. The discount didn’t make up for the absolutely atrocious food.

We were very last-minute booking a break in the Lakes, but luckily found this little gem! We were warmly-welcomed the minute we walked in and I must say, ALL staff, throughout our 2 night stay were very friendly and professional - a real pleasure. Our room was comfy, clean and cosy - a little small, but this was clearly stated in the room descriptions so not a problem at all. Breakfast was outstanding, with a wonderful choice of fresh produce and again, all served with a smile. We ate dinner here too and, oh my goodness, what a truly delicious meal. The location of the pub is wonderful - right in the middle of the most beautiful scenery, especially lovely if you get the weather to enjoy the beer garden (we did!). It's in great proximity to visit Keswick too. We did the Threlkeld to Keswick 5km walk along the old railway line, which was stunning, then got the bus back, which drops right outside the pub. Highly recommended, and we will definitely be back

My friends and I were cycling the Coast 2 Coast and spent our first night (Saturday 17 August) at the Horse and Farrier. Keith and Rachel were wonderful and could not have done more to make us feel at home and so well looked after. Despite being very busy during dinner service Keith and Rachel attended to our many changes in guest numbers with a calm air of professionalism yet laser focused top class customer service. For a wonderful bed and breakfast experience, and excellent quality food topped off with world class customer service, I cannot recommend the Horse and Farrier more highly. We will return.

Great inn in quiet location. The room was spacious with king bed and very modern large bathroom whilst keeping the period features like ceilings beams. Quality of the room surprised me given the age of the building. Dinner was most enjoyable and the breakfast was also full of choice. One of the best inns I have stopped in on my trip from Australia. Staff were also excellent.

Amazing customer service and top quality food. Visited today with 2 Miniature Pinschers, one of whom is extremely nervous and wary of humans after a bad start to life. She is terrified of everything & everyone. Cannot praise our waiter enough for how patient & persistent he was to gain her trust. We were at table 11 & would ask the management to recognise just how good our guy was. Forever grateful. Food was amazing & service exceptional.

On a driving tour around the extensive and dramatic Lake District scenery I came across this attractive Inn and decided to stop for lunch. It was quite busy but still had some space in it's good size car park. Went in and was made welcome. It was my first lunch in the Lakes and went a bit traditional with a Cumberland Sausage & Mash with fried onions and tasty gravy. Delicious. If you find yourself in Threlkeld then this is the place to go for a good meal and a well stocked bar.

We were greeted immediately by Keith when we entered the pub with a warm welcome and smile. It felt comfortable and relaxed. Our portion sizes were impressive and of high quality. We had the Greek salad and the Tuna and Onion baguette with a good salad garnish. Martin and Libby were also attentive and friendly as they served our food and drinks to our table. Overall, an impressive experience with staff who clearly know how to run a hospitality establishment. Well done everyone and thank you.

Always enjoy popping into the Horse & Farrier when we are in Threlkeld. Love the relaxed feeling inside and on a good day its nice to sit outside. Staff are always welcoming and there is a pretty extensive menu to choose from. I personally love the starter loaded nachos to which I add beef chilli. Its a meal in itself.... absolutely delicious. Lunchtimes you can generally get a table but it may be advisable to book in advance to secure a table in the evening.

Party of 4 and all happy with the main course though I do think that £5.50 for sides, eg. Portion of chips/tomato and onion salad/onion rings, is over the top. Dog friendly pub but they are not allowed in carpeted areas. Not everyone like dogs so it is good to have some segregation but I would say that the carpets have seen better days. Overall a good place to go but it does sometimes suffer from its popularity.

This is a decent pub and beer, nice staff, good atmosphere, snug with its fires. However, the chicken piri-piri salad was totally inedible. The 'chef' clearly doesn't taste his own creations. The cold chicken was smothered in hot chillies that they blistered my lips. I overheard other diners also tell the waiter that their dishes were tasteless. It was the first time this 70 year old had eaten so little of a plate - even in central Africa I managed to finish my plate. All I can imagine is the chef was on holiday and a poor sub was in his place.

MORE AT TripAdvisor

We stayed here for a 3 night break just before Christmas. We were really looking forward to our stay as we have stayed here before in the past and have really enjoyed ourselves. But this time after our stay we will not be returning. I will start with the good points. Lovely old building with traditional lounge and bar area. Convenient to get to Keswick and Penrith by bus as its just outside the door. The traditional breakfast was delicious and with local produce. However, when we arrived we informed the reception that we are travelling with a campervan which we have parked in the hotel car park. We informed reception that we were telling him this as we didnt want anyone to think we have parked up and abandoned our vehicle as we wouldnt be using it during our stay. However, when we checked out and returned to our vehicle, a very rude abrupt man (which we assume was the manager) came up to us telling us that we could not just park our vehicle in the hotel car park as its only for hotel guests. I explained to him that we had been staying in the hotel. He totally ignored what I was saying to him. He then repeated that we couldnt park in the hotel car park and that he had been banging on the campervan doors for the past 3 days trying to catch someone in! I again repeated that we had been staying in the hotel. And again he ignored what I was saying to him and again proceeded to say we cant park there and that they had had trouble with campervans just parking up and leaving their vehicles. Third time of telling him that we had stayed in the hotel for 3 nights and thats why he couldnt get anyone in the campervan as we were out during the day. I then told him that he can check with the hotel if he wanted to prove that we had stayed there and that we get hassle off people all the time as they just assume campervans shouldnt be parked anywhere. This time he actually too it in what I was saying and then said he used to have a campervan and was sorry he had got rid of it!! I suggest that you should take guests car registrations when they check in so that incidents like this can be avoided. Especially as we had informed reception upon arrival and maybe it would help if the Manager had actually listened to what guests are saying. Apart from this very unfriendly departure, which was just the icing on the cake for a bad experience here. Our room can only be described as a broom cupboard as it wasnt much bigger than one! It didnt help either with the walls being a dark grey colour which only added to the feeling of a prison. The room was that small that the bathroom door could not be opened fully because it hit the bed. We could not hang our coats up as 1) There was only 3 thin wire coat hangers which looked like they would break and 2) if we had hung them up then they would have been on top of the tea tray as the coat hanging rail was above the chest of drawer with the tea tray on top. The shower room was small but when you went to use the toilet, you were dripped on from the ceiling light and the paint on the ceiling was peeling off. It was a good job we were travelling light as there was no wardrobe and only just about room between the beds to open your case, but you would have to stand in the case to move around the room. The staff could do with a retrain in hospitality. They were not friendly, infact they didnt speak until we said "Good Morning" to them first. Which is a real shame as the staff used to be so friendly here which is why we have stayed before. It was a very unpleasant stay overall and we wont be returning.

Great pub, great food, great beer and really good staff. The servings were huge, especially the fish and chips. I went for the belly pork from the specials menu and it was amazing. My daughter really enjoyed her meal too. Thanks
