We had wanted to try here for something to eat for a while but just never got round to it . We called in bank holiday Saturday and was surprised to find it rather quite . A small choice of meals but all looked very nice and very well priced . I chose the liver onion , gravy and mashed potato my wife had the homemade steak pie and chips . Both were freshly prepared which we were informed by the landlady who was lovely even signing along to one of the songs playing in the background so nice to hear people happy in their job . The meals arrived piping hot and large portions . Both meals were lovely and with homemade gravy with both . 2 meals plus 2 large cokes under £20 bargain We will definitely be back for something to eat soon and although a bit quite today I got the feeling it would be a great pub and atmosphere when busy as such we will definitely be calling for a drink sometime as well .

Visited the Horse&jockey before Wrexhams big promotion game the pub was very busy but it did not take long to be served I ordered 2 bottles of beer and a pint of lager I paid by card machine and I swiped the top of the device.I never saw the amount on the machine. When I checked my bank the next day I had been charged £27 for my drinks. How many other people did they over charge that day??

We visited here for a drink after watching a Wrexham match, and were greeted by some Danes who'd flown in to see their sister. We enjoyed some good conversation with them and later in the night, they asked us where they can go to buy cigarettes. After informing them of where they can find cigarettes at this time (while outside the pub), the landlord interrupted us and told them the place we recommended will charge £15 for cigarettes, which is not the case. After politely correcting the landlord, she proceeded to storm back into the pub, locking us out of the pub with our stuff inside. After knocking on the door, the landlord opened the door slightly and asked us to stop. We informed her that our stuff is inside and she replied with, 'well you shouldn't argue with me then should you'. We then managed to get inside to collect our stuff and leave, though we had to locate this ourselves as the landlord had placed them into lost property and was not willing to hand them over to us. She threatened to call the police and told us that we are on CCTV, despite committing no crimes. All of this, over a disagreement of cigarette prices. I will not be returning until there is a new landlord.

I visited the horse and jockey last night after a spell away and the atmosphere was amazing. Unfortunately, I suffer with epilepsy and had a seizure in the pub. The staff and customers alike where so helpful in trying to sort me out. The landlord was one of the first to come to my aid and I can't thank her enough. I would highly recommend a visit to the horse and jockey, not just because of this experience but because it is a friendly and fantastic pub. Thank you horse and jockey.

This is my first trip to Wrexham and, as such, made a point of visiting the Horse and Jockey, which is probably the oldest pub in the town. The pub is located on Wrexham's main shopping street, but once you enter, you may as well be in another world. The pub is warm and cosy with oak beams on the ceiling. Was disappointed that there was no Wrexham Lager on tap, but a good selection of cask ales more than made up for it.

Having read the description of this pub and seen a photo of it online, I thought I was prepared for the reality. However, walking down one of Wrexham's decidedly uninspiring and characterless main streets, it was still a bit of a jolt to suddenly see this building sitting cheek-by-jowl with bland modern shops. The whitewashed exterior and dark thatch stand out starkly. It is almost as if you are looking through a rip in time or the pub has been dropped in from some 'living museum'. Once inside you get the feeling that this must be a buzzing and cosy place to enjoy a drink (and maybe a bite to eat) during the autumn or winter. It is a small establishment with nooks, stone-flagged floors and wood beams/panelling in abundance. Yes, it has character. At odds with this is the cross-section of modern pop/rock music played over the sound system (fortunately not too loud around lunchtime) as well as various posters advertising upcoming sports and other events, such as karaoke, at the pub. We received a warm and friendly welcome. My wife was pleased to find there was decent dry white wine on offer as well as the choice of well-kept real ale for myself. It was heartening to overhear the landlady guiding a new recruit through the finer points of drawing a fresh barrel of ale through and talking about the importance of cleaning the lines. We cannot comment on the food since we dropped in only for a drink. We certainly recommend a visit if you are in Wrexham.

We saw the beautiful thatch roof and thought, this could be good for a spot of lunch. However we were a little disappointed. The service was slow and we had to ask 3 times for the bill, and the food was mostly average, with the curry my Aunt had being quite poor. It was cold and the poppadom was soggy, and the mango chutney she asked for never arrived. The staff were friendly, but just did not seem to know what they were doing, unsure if they were new or just a little out of sorts that day. The building was lovely inside, rustic and clearly a grate place for a pint if you are local, but not quite what I was expecting. Prices are reasonable, the curry being the exception, though I am sure not everything is of this standard. Overall, I found it disappointing, my Aunt was not keen to kick up a fuss about the curry, so I am unable to say how they would have handled it, but given the service in general, my hopes would not have been high.

We initially ‘popped’ in here just to get a hot drink & while we were waiting for our (very good) hot chocolates, decided to have food too. The kitchen was about to close, but the landlady allowed us to order & recommended the roast dinners, so we ordered two beef & one lamb - they were all very nice & reasonably priced, we had a glass of wine with the meal too. It’s a quirky place - very old, but had a lovely atmosphere & we enjoyed our time there, we’d go there again if we were in the area.

The Horse and Jockey is a traditional, thatched roof old pub in the centre of town. Having lived all my life in the area, I have never been inside - had the opinion it was not a place to go for food. Visited for breakfast with family today and was pleasantly surprised. Interior is very welcoming and the staff were very friendly. Although we only ate beans on toast and had coffee to drink, the service and atmosphere made the occasion very pleasant. Full menu served all day from 9 am and after our visit today, we will certainly return to sample some of the home made meals. Highly recommend.

Yesterday I witnessed what I can only describe as the most arrogant and aggressive behaviour from a landlord. Throwing bottles from 2 metres away into a bin full of bottles creating loud bangs despite the pub being packed with fellow concerts goers. Many people from all over the country were there to witness this behaviour and what a shame for Wrexham and this pub which used to have such a good reputation. We watched the land lord telling the crowd to go and drink elsewhere if they didn't like the banging!!! Well that's customer service at its worse, they have also lost our custom too based on such terrible behaviour!!!

Visited for lunch today whilst out shopping with my friend and we were disappointed to find that the standard of food had gone down so much since our last visit earlier in the year. We both had omelettes with chips, peas and a small side salad. The omelettes were acceptable though much smaller than previously but the chips were thin, bland and obviously not home made. We also couldn't understand why there was half a slice of orange on the plate which, by the look of it, would have been better placed straight into the bin! Needless to say we didn't eat it. We will probably eat elsewhere on our next visit to Wrexham.

After doing all we wanted to do on the streets of Wrexham (and it was market day too!) we wandered on over to the Horse & Jockey and it was just as good this year as it was in 2014. The young man who provided the table service was very friendly and provided excellent service to all the tables. We ordered the large roast and an omelet and both were very good and enjoyed. It is definitely good value for money and a relaxing spot to take a meal. (And then we go up the road to the left and into the car park for the retail area...very easy!) Called in here with my friend for a bite to eat, never again. I ordered gammon with egg, chips and peas, and my friend ordered steak and kidney pie with chips and peas. The peas on both orders were cold, the pie should have been called a kidney and steak pie. Never have I seen so much kidney and the pastry was awful, my gammon was so fatty it was impossible to eat it and the fried egg was unbelievably small. We both ordered chocolate fudge cake with cream, the cream was from an aerosol and the cake had been microwaved for so long, the chocolate sauce was glued to the bowl, and the sponge was rock hard. When I went to the bar for our drinks, I gave the woman the order, she then attempted to sell me something totally different, and then when I declined proceeded to give me something totally different from my original order. When I pointed her mistake out to her, she proceeded to tell me that I had ordered the drink and basically that she was never wrong. Stay well away, horrible place and overpriced for the quality of the food and service you receive.

Three of us called into this old thatched pub (the thatch is a rarity for the area) for a bite to eat on a weekday. It reminded us of the Dr Who tardis as, after passing through the traditional bar area, it opens out into a good size restaurant and the whole place was spotlessly clean. There were a few gents enjoying a pint in the bar and several other diners and, in general, a very friendly atmosphere. The menu had plenty of choice from a range of sandwiches to a more substantial meal. We chose gammon, fish and chips and chicken and leek pie and all three meals came nicely presented and were most enjoyable. We will go there again.

I'm always reluctant to eat before mid day, but decided to challenge one of Elin's infamous breakfasts.Boy did I make the right choice!! The best breakfast in Wrexham by a mile! Following this, I had 6 Pints of Cold Carling, before trotting off up the street to Wetherspoons. I told a few people in there about my breakfast and I think I've converted a few to try the Jockey from now on. I also tried the traditional 'Fish'n Chips' a few months back and that was also outstanding value for money. I would recommend anyone to give the Horse & Jockey a go.

Haven't been to Wrexham, Wales in about 15 years and so we made tracks to spend some time there today. Busy place, loads and loads of shops, beautiful old buildings, churches, very nice. The main intent was to have a meal again at the Horse & Jockey on Hope Street. We got a bit twisted around after going into a couple of the big markets (and they are great with all sorts being offered)...in the front door and out the back so we inquired of two very friendly ladies that couldn't have been more helpful and we found that little thatched pub with no trouble. Sat in a cosy little spot and the bartender came right over to us to ask what we'd like and then the lovely, friendly waitress came over next...table service! in Wales! She even asked if we would like the TV volume turned down since it was close by! We ordered what we'd had before, i.e. one small roast, one large roast.. Takes a little bit of time but worth waiting for since it was very good...roast beef, horseradish, carrots, mashed potato, roasted potato, Yorkshire Pudding, cauliflower, gravy...I mean really? Just like my mother used to make! We are so happy to have returned and hope another 15 years won't go by before we get there again. Highly recommend. Good value for money. Lovely staff.

For me, what sets the Horse and Jockey apart from many other town centre pubs-that-do-food is the waitress service dining area at the back that gives this section the atmosphere of a small traditional cafe rather than a pub, complete with senior citizens' specials etc. Yet - the traditional "pub bit" is adjacent too, a normal bar where you can get all the real ales and the like to go with your nosh that you wouldn't get in a cafe. . Definite best of both worlds. This was my second visit, having been impressed when I first stumbled across the place last April. Service was very friendly and efficient, even though it was busy. The menu is also firmly "small cafe" rather than "gastropub;" lots of chips and sticky toffee puddings and prices are reasonable. My pint of Horse and Jockey ale (presumably brewed specially for the pub) was in perfect nick. The cod'n'chips (£6.95) was standard cafe cod'n'chips, not as good as a chip shop but tasty. When I wasn't hungry enough for any of the £3.50 desserts and looked pleading, the waitress brought me a small dish of plain ice cream for £1.50. Traditional places like this seem to be dying out in the post-smoking ban gastropub revolution (I'm with Al Murray, when he said that the only word that belongs with "gastro" is "enteritis"). The White Lion in Hyde is the only similar place I've been to in the last year or so. Long may they survive.

During this time the waiting on staff were informing everyone how short staffed they were, not what you want to hear when you have gone out for a meal with your partner. Eventually the meal arrived, as did an apology and the promise of free icecream due to the error. Finished a nice lunch with lovely gravy. Following this we waited and waited for the icecream to arrive. The car parking ticket was now well over the time we had paid so after aprox 20 minutes of waiting for a bowl of ice cream we decided to walk out. Just to mention, we had paid as they take your money the second you order which we found peculiar.

We have had breakfast here about 4-5 times over the last 12 months when visiting Wrexham and our meal has always been excellent. 2 rashers of back bacon, 2 sausages, fried egg, 2 hash browns, mushrooms and beans/tomatoes. The food is freshly cooked to order and always hot. Included in the price(£3.95) is a cup of coffee and a round of thickly cut toast. There is a separate dining area to the back of the pub which is spotlessly clean. I noticed a sign which I think said no children allowed in dining area after 2.30pm which may be of interest to people wishing to escape "ankle biters". We will definitely be visiting again as the lunch time menu looks very good indeed.

We have visited here many times for Sunday lunch & I thought it was about time I wrote a review! This is an historic pub in the middle of Wrexham with fabulous home cooked food. The Sunday lunch is a highlight and you have a choice of a small or large lunch which is great for pensioners or children. The landlord, Geoff is always very welcoming & friendly & is justifiably proud of their menu which includes gorgeous home made cakes & puddings. It is quite small inside so can get full very quickly so its probably best to book especially as their prices are wonderful value! Can't wait to return here as my Roast Lamb dinner was yummy!

one of the oldest pubs in wrexham, in the centre and with a thatched roof, it is a landmark.Open from 9am onwards, they serve breakfast, great if you are working in wrexham. the menu is good, and ther is also a specials board. from the outside it looks a small drinks only pub, but it is deceptive. well worth a visit, it is a gem in wrexham.

I visited the wheatsheaf with my family as we was passing and it was around lunch time, well all I can say is the staff members were foul mouthed and rude.

Food was lovely apart from hot and fiery wings, which were not very spicy were very nice. Good prices service very slow took 45 minutes to get a sandwich, due to kitchen equipment not working.
