Great place to stay, eat, drink. So welcoming (dog-friendly) and cosy. Because we have a dog, we stayed in the Salutation Inn, which is literally 1 minute’s walk away. The staff, food and drink were all wonderful. The room in the ‘Sally’ was small but cosy, warm and very accommodating, including tea/coffee facilities, dog bowls and treats. Will definitely stay again; and highly recommend.

No volveremos

No había atmósfera alguna. . . . This was a good Sunday lunch in a big village pub/restaurant which deserves to survive the coming hard times in the hospitality business. It was ominously quiet, as the whole area was, and this summer's prospects look grim. But that didn't affect the food; the Sunday roasts were above average, the vegan main course option was ... adequate, and the desserts were truly excellent. The vegan shortbread was so good you couldn't tell it was vegan.Service was friendly and mostly efficient with a rough edge or two, but lets not quibble. The Inn was busy, very dog friendly and clearly very popular with many people. However, the pleasure of the evening could have been improved by a more personal service (we were served by 4 different people) and by the place being less rushed. Called in for lunch, welcoming place with good atmosphere. Pint of shandy and glass of wine £9.50, bit pricey for a village pub relying on tourists... Hubby had fish and chips, £10.95 a huge portion, I had scampi, billed as Whitby Scampi, but it was just like my supermarket frozen stuff, so coming in at over £9 wasn't great, now if they would have served homemade chips instead of frozen we would have given top marks. New owners apparently- they were great and I will visit again happily and maybe try a sandwich next time :)

We called in at the Horse & Farrier whilst visiting Keswick with my American cousin & his wife, Mum, Husband & our two dogs! The staff were so accommodating and didn't mind us having our dogs sit with us in the bar area. The food was to die for. So much so that we dined for 3 consecutive evenings I can't recommend this place highly enough and would just like to say if your in the area please go in and try it. You definitely won't be disappointed. The lamb shoulder is amazing. Thank you to all the lovely staff for giving us such a warm welcome and the chefs for cooking us some amazing meals. We will definitely be back when we next visit Keswick.

Waited 40 minutes without any further intervention by staff so asked what was happening to our order; a mistake apparently. Whilst the waved the cost of the food it was poor service and did not go back. Basically a pub trying to be an up-market restaurant.

We did not make it to the top of Blencathra; the wind drove us down. So, before walking to Keswick we stopped for a coffee at the Horse & Farrier in Threlkeld. That was our mistake. There is a coffee shop in the village, which we did not see until later. My friend ordered four coffees but the barman became extremely grumpy and was almost grudging in his attitude. If I had been ordering I would have walked out! There were plenty of empty seats and tables. We provided a minute additional sale without denying other customers service. It was a shame since the other staff were warm and welcoming. We would have returned; but not now. The grumpy old man will ensure that we take our custom elsewhere.

We been coming to the north Lakes for our holidays every year for the past 8 years and every time we've made a point of having a family meal at The Horse and Farrier. The reason for this is because the food has always been excellent. Excellent quality, big sized portions, excellent value for money and above all excellent service. During our latest visit, last week (which again didn't disappoint), we were served by an excellent waiter called Graham. He welcomed us and got our 'drinks and food' order sorted very quickly. We also had 6 small children with us who quite frankly were kicking off due to them being tired after a week of fun in the lakes, but Graham had the situation under control by engaging with the kids and getting their meals out ASAP which worked wonders.I don't normally write reviews but felt like I should write down our thoughts about this place as I think we should give credit where due. Over the years, The Horse and Farrier has become one of our favourite pubs as the consistency of food and service has been excellent.

went there last week with visiting friend's, I live close by,i have been here a few times before, the place was full, I ordered off the normal menu, my food was overcooked and dry, they offered a special menu but I noticed the prices had gone up by about 40%,service was slow and some of our order was wrong, overall not a good evening, It seems as if the prices rise and the quality goes down went the tourist season starts,

Amazing food. Be sure to book early. 4 of us had different meals - vegetarian Lasagne, lamb shoulder, chicken, pork belly and each if us were delighted with the quality if the meal. The lamb melted in my mouth. The dining rooms were full - obviously it has a reputation that is justified!

We waited patiently for fifty minutes after ordering food. When we noticed a large group on a table nearby, who had arrived after us, being served we queried our wait. The waitress said she would check. Ten minutes later she came back and asked us what we had ordered. They hadn't even started preparing our food. I understand that sometimes a wait us necessary at busy times but at no point did any one tell us it would be at least an hour, nor did anyone bother to check we were ok waiting, or offer us a drink. Common courtesy would have been nice. We left, hungry, and still not knowing if or when our food would ever arrive.

We first visited the Horse and Farrier at Lunchtime together with a large party of disabled Ramblers. (about 15 heavy duty electric scooters plus walkers). The Landlord had agreed we could use his carpark and facilites to have lunch mid ramble. Many of the ramblers brought packed lunches whilst others bought food and drink from the pub. So this wasn't a particularly profitable enterprise for him. However the staff were brilliant and couldn't help enough. We returned for dinner a couple of nights later and it was excellent although the place was packed out (apparently booking is always a good idea) we were seated and served very efficiently but most of all given how busy it was with such good humour. As I said the food was beautifuliy cooked and well presented.,

We're a family of four (our two sons are 9 & 6). We had a very upsetting time when we visited Horse & Farrier on our last evening in Lake District before travelling to London and then returning to India. Since I'm primarily vegetarian my choices at most restaurants are limited, however, I've never had a problem as either I or the restaurant work around something. It's the effort and warmth of a place that matters more than the taste of the food. Hence I was struggling with my choice of order. The kids were hungry so I wanted to rush theirs and ordered a veg lasagna for one son and a child's portion of a beef burger for the other. The rude behaviour started with the black gentleman telling me rudely that if pasta (since I thought a simple arabiatta sauce with pasta could fix me) isn't on the menu then that's it, nothing can be done and grabbed the menu from me. Then our older son (who ordered the kid's portion of a beef burger) got it without anything in it (not even butter; dry and poor). We requested some salad leaves, onions and tomatoes to be put in and that we'd be happy to pay for it. We then received a plate of salad thankfully to fix my son's burger. Then my husband's burger (he also ordered a child's portion as he wasn't very hungry) was fine after that (since I'm sure the Inn didn't wish a repeat of a salad request). We've ordered kids burgers before but never seen one so plain & insipid. Then I finally ordered the mushroom stroganoff (which clearly mentioned being served on a bed of rice besides garlic bread and salad). It came without the rice. When I requested rice I got it back with a few spoonfuls mixed into it! Atrocious. This is just not acceptable. I just ate so that we could pay and leave. I also noticed, during our meal, that only our table didn't have a candle. Were we being discriminated overall? I wonder! No apologies from the lady who clearly looked like she managed the place. The cherry on the cake was that I have not still received a response from the owner (who clearly asked for feedback as stated on the menu and who I emailed the same evening after finding a heap of their business cards in the Ladies toilet - as I'm sure they were left there for a customer's feedback). Good luck to so called successful snooty restaurants where pride goes before a fall! Atrocious behaviour and service! This is the first time I have ever gone out of my way to post a bad review which I avoided for 2 weeks hoping to get a reply and explanation from the owner which I haven't!

After a family holiday in the Lake District, on the last evening we booked a table for supper. Firstly the staff were very accommodating when the party number increased last minute, and we had friendly bar staff and waiter service through out the evening. The food was delicious. I tried guinea fowl for the first time which was off the specials and I would like to tank the chef for giving me such a great first experience - will definitely be trying that again and hopefully it will be as delicious. Other members of party had belly pork (half a pig - huge portions!), lamb shank, pie, steak, stuffed chicken. All extremely happy and very full.Unfortunately we didn't try any desserts as we were simply too full form the huge portions! Great view from beer garden if your just after a drink off an evening, great all round pub - Will definitely try and return,

I must say that I agree with the review by Littlesuzie, below. I have never felt less welcome in an inn in my life! We called in for a light lunch. The atmosphere was 'chilly' to say the least and I was not welcome to attend the bar for service - I was told to sit down and await service. The waiter demanded my name, 'for the tab' said he. This was in spite of the fact that the tables were all numbered. When I go into a pub, my name is my business, not that of a surly waiter. Two half pints of draught bitter cost £3.50 and was excellent Jennings' beer. Two baguettes brought the bill to £16.50. Judge the value for yourself. Frankly, this inn needs to improve its customer relations and to get rid of the (African?) waiter. To the waiter, I would say 'I have eaten in places that you could only dream about and have always been made to feel welcome and have been treated with respect! Learn your trade!

A large group of friends were camping together at Burns Farm campsite (highly recommended ) and we booked a meal here on our last day. The staff were very accommodating and very friendly. They asked us to preorder our meals which worked extremely well and they managed to bring out meals for over 30 of us at practically the same time. Good sized portions of food and very tasty. Kids portions very generous too! A lovely welcoming atmosphere and a great place to relax on a dreary day!

This is a great traditional pub serving excellent food and not overpriced. Makes a fantastic half day out if you park up in Keswick and walk the 4 miles along the Old Railway line (flat walk) into Threlkeld. Although it is even more welcome after walking up the mighty Blencathra first! You can catch the bus back into Keswick from a stop only a couple of minutes away.

This little gem of a bed and breakfast is set in a quaint old building, with low beams and sash windows. It is run by a number of extremely experienced and friendly men with super efficiency. We stayed in room 6 which had a king size double and a bath. Everything was clean and the towels were soft and fluffy. The temperature of the room was cosy. As with the food in the pub/restaurant, full English breakfast was excellent. We were sad to leave and had a great time.

Me and my partner were staying for a three night break at the brilliant burns farm just down the road.Decided to go in on the first night, partner had an ok steak, drinks overpriced. We went back for an evening meal on the last night of our stay. We opted for the olives to start which were ok. Limited menu - I opted for the scampi. It was greasy and tasteless. No member of staff came to check if everything was ok.When a member of staff did come over my partner was about to say the scampi wasn't great when the very rude waiter looked at me up and down and remarked 'must of had a cream cake earlier' Desserts were average and plates left on the table for approx 20 minutes after we had finished. My partner had to ask for the plates to be taken away. Get the impression they don't really care what customer service is delivered as trade is mostly tourists. We will certainly be back to this area of the lakes. But never will we waste our money in this dreary, overpriced pub where their idea of customer service is to insult their customers0

We dined in Bustro 1871 as part of a short break holiday at the Appleby Manor Hotel. What a lovely break this was. Our first after the Spring and Summer lockdown. The food was really good and the waiters attentive. Appleby Manor itself is a delightful hotel full of old world charm. We are returning there again for my wife's birthday in October. I shall again dine in Bistro 1871 as well as sampling the gourmet restaurant at the hotel on our second night.
