Dear [Restaurant Management], I have been a loyal patron of the Horn of Plenty for the past 20 years, making it a tradition to dine at your establishment during my annual October visit to Cornwall. I have always cherished my experiences, which have consistently been a highlight of my trips. However, my recent visit in 2024 left me disappointed and saddened. Firstly, the new decor, with its dull and somber wall colors, lacks the warmth and elegance that I used to associate with the restaurant. The ambiance now feels flat and uninviting, which is a stark contrast to the vibrant and welcoming atmosphere I’ve enjoyed in the past. Secondly, the quality of service has noticeably declined. Staff seemed inattentive, and the overall service felt lackluster compared to previous years. I’ve come to expect a high level of hospitality, and unfortunately, that standard was not met. Regarding the menu, I was surprised by the limited options available. As a long-time guest, I have always appreciated the variety and creativity of your offerings. This year, however, I found myself having to order two chicken-based dishes for both my starter and main, as the fish option was underwhelming and did not meet the quality I’ve come to expect. The flavors were not as memorable, and it felt as though the culinary experience had taken a step back. Furthermore, the prices do not seem justified given the reduced quality and variety. It is disheartening to say that I will not be returning, as the Horn of Plenty no longer feels like the special place it once was. I hope you take this feedback constructively, as it comes from someone who has truly valued your establishment over the years. Thank you for taking the time to consider my comments, and I hope the Horn of Plenty can once again reclaim its status as a cherished gem. Warm regards, Norma Tako

We were here to have a reception and stay two nights in the hotel. I'm no pushover on what I expect but this hotel with an enchanting location was matched by the sheer excellence of the food, the size of the room (worth paying more) and above all the staff that have the rarity today of actually wanting to serve you and are professional in doing so.

We would like to thank Horn of Plenty for an excellent Easter lunch enjoyed by our family today. Some tempting dishes from a well curated seasonal menu - the first time I’ve had the pleasure of trying proper Simnal cake in a restaurant! The rhubarb crème brûlée and crab risotto excellent and the lamb as delicious as you’d expect. We really appreciated being able to have our coffee outside in the sunshine to enjoy the gorgeous view and for the staff to bring cushions for the outside seating. Lovely not to feel rushed, as too many places are on a Sunday lunchtime. A first visit, we look forward to returning to Horn of Plenty.

This was our first visit to The Horn of Plenty & visited with friends for lunch (6 of us). They are currently offering their charity lunch menu on behalf of Macmillan cancer which helped influence making the booking. The hotel is in an amazing location with wonderful views from the restaurant. There was time for a pre lunch drink whilst making our choice from the menu & we were then shown to our large round table which was covered in a pristine white table cloth - a nice touch as some of the smaller tables were left uncovered. The food was great & nicely presented. The only slight criticism was that the main courses could have been served a bit hotter, however that did not spoil the experience. Staff were very efficient & friendly - special thanks to Ellen (I think that was her name - shorter older lady) who's professionalism & friendliness added to the visit. We will definitely be back in the not too distant future.

Horn of shame ! Not keen on writing negative reviews but there is no way to ignore what was probably the worst eating out experience of the century. The problem with “Horn of Plenty” is the previous reputation of the place and the expectations that go with it.If you were heading to Pizza Hut you knew what to expect so you come out feeling content with what you got. It’s when you head for something that lives on its reputation and portrays itself and prices itself as a fine dinning establishment and you come out feeling robbed.Let down after let down after let down. Our visit to Horn of Plenty was a trip down memory Lane marking a special birthday. The last time we were there we were greeted on arrival outside the front entrance by a member of staff addressing us by our name and directing us to the car park. Not this time.On entering the building we couldn’t not notice the pathetic nearly dead smal bunch of flowers on the table while looking for somebody ,anybody to welcome us.Not this time. After waiting around for couple of minutes we made our way to the main dinning area where we found a member of staff behind the bar who acknowledged us and offered us a drink.Nothing personal aimed at the member of staff who was incidentally efficient enough but did not expect to see face piercing and tattoos and scruffy uniform with a hole on the skirt in a fine dinning establishment. Was then directed to an empty silent restaurant with one other table. Why no background music ? Why do we have to do sign language in a restaurant so that others can’t hear us ? Expected linen table clothes as you would in a fine dinning restaurant, instead it was naked tables you would find in Burger King ! Total lack of style and class.Ordered a bottle of sparkling at the table. It was clear that the waitress had no training in opening a bottle of sparkling drink. You hold the bottle and turn the cork. It’s easy !The drink was poured but the glasses were not refilled again throughout the meal. The bread arrived. Not home made but probably bought from Tesco and warmed up in the oven served with very chilled hard butter. Why don’t you try spreading hard butter on a piece of bread to see the problem ? All these could have been forgiven if the food was of reasonable standard. It wasn’t ! Servings were ridiculously small which was a blessing to be honest since the food was so tasteless and badly put together you could be forgiven in thinking it was the first time this chef had cooked a dish. The table wasn't wiped after our plates were moved, leaving bread crumbs and water which had leaked from the bucket that contained the sparkling bottle. There was another table in the restaurant all the time until another couple arrived and was placed at a table right next to us.There were seven other unoccupied tables in the restaurant so it was a mystery why they were placed right next to us.Somebody help please,I am confused!!! We were served a very watered down filtered coffee at the lounge at our request and paid the £212 bill for two leaving feeling totally deflated and robbed. What has happened to the Horn of Plenty ? How long can it survive on its old reputation ? We ended up at Pizza Hut for a substantially better meal later. Please don’t respond by apologising and offering a better visit next time. That’s been done before and it doesn’t work.Read this review couple of times and improve for your other guests so they won’t feel bitter as we did.Thank you.

We had a wonderful night at The Horn of Plenty as a result of receiving a really good offer by e mail. We have stayed 3/4 times in the past and have never been disappointed. Food was quite excellent once again for both our dinner and breakfast. Clearly some extremely capable chefs have been employed to maintain excellent standards. We had the opportunity to meet the owner who is clearly passionate about the future of the hotel. We will be back in the summer for lunch to celebrate another birthday.

We had the tasting menu with matched wines. Just great, all round. Firstly, the food exceeded expectations. The impression of a meal always rests on the key ingredients and for us this was scallops and venison. Both were great. The venison in particular was memorable. The service was also well judged. The restaurant is well staffed, but you aren't fussed over... Or rushed... Or waiting too long. That is really hard to get right. The space is also nice. It doesn't have a particular style - I guess that's left to the view in the summer - however they've not fallen into the trap of too many. tables close to one another, or two few that there's no background hum. Again, well judged. All in all, would thoroughly recommend.

Upmarket dining that is actually family friendly with staff who are more than willing to accommodate young children despite the usual expectations of such a setting. We will absolutely be back. High quality food with a price that fits just right. Beautiful building inside and out. Clearly a venue loved by all. Portion sizes of the vegetarian options were a bit light. Otherwise delicious, special flavors and textures. Very talented and respectful staff.

Visited the Hotel after a period of several years. Although the location and ambiance of the dining room is good…regrettably we were extremely disappointed with the quality and quantity of the main course. Also the wafers of cheese was served with bland flavourless black and red biscuits! Conclusion very poor value, current rating unmerited!

Oh dear. We left our last visit to the HoP feeling rather sad. We booked in for an Afternoon Tea, with my partner saying on the online booking form that she was dairy-free and vegetarian (she has been for some time). We were ushered through to the small drawing room and had to sit among giant 'Happy 40th' balloons, then moved to the restaurant area where there were perhaps 3 or 4 tables in use. Our hot drink orders were taken promptly - I changed my mind and decided to go for an alcoholic drink. I was told a little abruptly "That will cost you more." Yes, I appreciate that. Seemed a little hostile so I stuck with the coffee. We were then brought the Afternoon Tea on a single stand, with veggie one side and non-veggie the other. We checked if it was dairy-free, and the lady told us that the sandwiches were made with dairy-free butter, and the scones were also dairy-free (even though they looked like regular scones and were next to a portion of clotted cream). The cakes on top looked distinctly creamy, and she stopped herself and said she would go to the kitchen and double-check. She returned and told us that they didn't have any note to say my partner was dairy-free. Really? Then why did you tell us the sandwiches and scones are dairy-free? If that had been an allergy, that could have been incredibly serious. Anyway, the lady disappeared. After 45 minutes of no communication, with us drinking our hot drinks as slowly as possible, we were eventually brought the Afternoon Teas with an apology, and one being free. The lady poked at the food as she explained it "That's a lemony one with some bits and pieces on top." I felt she had never seen the dairy-free food before. The food was fine - nothing to write home about, certainly not worth £22.50, and not really the right experience when we didn't even have a drink at that point. At no point did anyone ask how it was, or whether we needed another drink having been served our hot drinks nearly an hour earlier. We appreciate the apology and the discount and I know mistakes happen, but we were so disappointed. We were made to feel as if it was our fault and the implication was that we hadn't added the note to the order. We definitely did, as we wouldn't have put veggie without dairy-free. The lack of communication during the wait, the strangely abrupt and confrontational service, not a pleasant experience. I desperately wanted the HoP to return to its former glory days of silver service, expert hospitality and sublime food. It doesn't feel that long ago that this was the case and my family would return multiple times a year for major celebrations. I'm now genuinely sad to say it feels more like a village tea-room, a little bit bumbling and over-familiar, with overpriced and uninspired food. What a huge pity.

We had dinner at The Horn of Plenty recently for my Mum’s birthday celebrations and we weren’t disappointed. We were greeted on arrival by Sarah who was lovely. Polite, considerate and nothing was too much trouble. That included a rendition of Happy Birthday for my Mum. The food was delicious as was the wine. Previously been here to meet up with friends for lunches and dinners. This time we booked in for the night. Everything here is excellent, staff, service, spotlessly clean and very comfortable. We stayed in room 7. More of a suite than just a room, balcony with views. We have stayed at many top hotels in the UK and around the world. The food here rates as good as, if not better than many high end establishments. Thoroughly recommend a stay here. Thank you to Jeremy, the owner who took time to talk to us about this beautiful Hotel. We were celebrating our Birthdays and had driven a new car up onto the moor, parking here is easy and safe. Went there for dinner, they had a 3 course menu for £69 which is reasonable. The food was tasty, not amazing but decent enough. Certainly not the best I’ve had in this area. The service however was terrible. Our waitress kept disappearing and although there were 3 other waitress walking around not looking very busy they all ignored us. We had to ask to order, after sitting there being ignored for about 15 minutes. We then had a very long wait for bread and starters. After desert our waitress disappeared for ages again so we had to get up and go to the bar to ask for the bill. The tables were too close together as well. So it was not a very relaxing experience. Really not the standard I’d expect in this sort of restaurant

An enjoyable experience from start to finish. Friendly , helpful staff , superb food and a peaceful rural setting . Immaculately clean. Only one downside - a freeloading couple on a nearby table who right from the start were (loudly) trying to cheat their way to a discount and kept demanding extra food . Still , the restaurant can’t choose its clientele (although one would hope this couple , who surely pull similar stunts wherever they may go, won’t be back) and bravo to the staff for their diplomacy

Steer Clear I was expecting great things but the restaurant from the start was really bad, poor greeting and the waitress staff lacked personality, to entering the restaurant which was a complete H&S hazard, the dinning chairs were broken and I had to request a new chair which wasn’t much better than the first chair. I did manage to make it through a poor lunch, without landing on the floor, the rump steak was extremely chewy and not edible. What a really sad performance all round and not worth the fine dining price tag. You get better value from Macdonald’s fast food restaurants!!!

This is our second, and last visit to The Horn of Plenty. We had a super visit for two nights the first time round. Based on this we booked a five night stay. We walked into our room to be met with an all pervading smell of wet dog. Upon complaining at reception we were told there was nothing they could really do as all rooms were fully booked. The receptionist went to clean again. Still wet dog smell. Our first night was spent trying to get comfortable on the old, prominent springs vi spring bed. We eventually unzipped the twin mattresses and turned the mattress. The housekeeping staff padded the mattress with an additional quilt under us. The next day we returned to find the original throw had been replaced with a damp one. Upon complaining this was replaced with the original one. Breakfast on day three was a poached egg and bacon on a muffin. Mine arrived minus the bacon. Upon mentioning this to the waitress she apologised. A couple of minutes later this was replaced with bacon which was grey in colour looking as if it had been cooked briefly in the microwave for speed. That evening we requested the tasting menus. We were placed on the worst table in the restaurant. Upon complaint we were originally told there were no spare tables as they were fully booked. We persisted and were eventually moved. I mentioned we had had several issues and we were presented with a complimentary glass of Prosecco each. We noted another couple were placed on this table. On complaining it was too crafty they too were moved and the table was then left empty. This was obviously not needed. A couple on the next table to us sent their red wine back. They said there were dead flies in it! Much apologies followed with replacements. So we will never ever go back.

Have just returned from having lunch at the Horn of Plenty, first time we have been able to visit since before COVID-19. Recent work on the restaurant and terrace area look lovely, with super terrace the full length of the massive glass doors providing great views of the Tamar valley. The menu was perhaps a little reduced to 3 choices per course, though that didn;t make the job of chosing much easier as the food is always lovely here. I had ham hock terrine followed by the most tender slow cooked beef I've had for years and to finish a sublime lemon posset with strawberries and elderflower sorbet. My wife had the catch of the day (hake) followed with the chef's delicous 'take' on banoffee. Tables were well spaced and staff made an extra effort to be warm and engaging as I know some people feel put off by face shields. As a bonus, the hotel is taking part in the 'eat out to help out' scheme so £20 came off the bill! Will definately return soon.

The restaurant is very airy with great views overlooking the garden and Tay valley. The food is quiet varied and is very well presented. It was of very good quality. The staff well excellent, attentive and friendly. As we were staying for 3 days we had 3 beakfasts and dinners. Highly recommended!

A lovely place for a posh family meal. We were well looked after and were not rushed at all. Staff were very receptive and allowed us to have our drinks outside, and desert in the sitting room. Great location with stunning scenery. Food was very good.

6 of us went for the hotel's charity lunch in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support at Derriford Hospital. 2 courses £17 & 3 courses £21. Staff were very welcoming & efficient. There were 3 choices for each course - starters & mains one each of meat, fish & vegetarian. Between us we sampled everything & all well pleased. We went to celebrate a birthday & our menus were personalised to reflect this - a nice touch. We were lucky to go on a sunny day & had the benefit of the wonderful view from the dining room.

Just came back from Sunday lunch. It was an absolute treat. Beautiful food and beautiful setting, despite the stormy weather. Lovely attentive staff and I think very good value for money. I can’t wait to go again.

Four of us went for dinner on Saturday evening. It was like going back in time - not in a good way! Staff were pleasant enough but oh my it was all very wrong. Vegetarian options limited, steak special only available if you were on the “ 3 night gourmet break”. The first course of “whipped Brie” turned out to be a solid and very cold lump of Brie stuck firmly to the plate, inedible unless starving! We persevered for the mains and each one of us had fish which was quite raw. At this point we decided to abandon the soulless and chilly dining room with its 1980’s decor and leave. Our departure was dealt with professionally and apologetically by the woman in charge. Never again - do avoid!

We booked to have dinner at this hotel & were really looking forward to the evening. We were greeted by a lady who took our jackets & then showed us into an adjoining dining room. She seemed to be in charge of the small reception desk as well as the dining room. It's not an inspiring place to sit, quite bare, with around a dozen tables. It must be lovely in the daytime with the views over the gardens but not very inspiring at night. Ambience is rather cold & stark - certainly not for the romantic & definitely reminiscent of a hotel dining room in the 80s.We chose the set menu, opting for scallops & the duo of pork. Amuse bouches were rushed to our table before the wine arrived. There were 3 people serving, an older lady with grey hair who scuttled past to other tables as well as the head waitress & another, younger girl... they were all wearing rather dated, black & white uniforms (acorn antiques anyone?)So far, so good. The food was beautifully presented & we enjoyed our courses. One of us opted for dessert, the other, the cheese plate. The younger waitress was really delightful, taking time to explain the dishes & especially each of the cheeses. We thought her engagement with us was spot on.Unfortunately, the head waitress seemed to take umbrage at this... she swept in while my husband was talking & cut him off mid sentence, ordering the young lady back to the kitchen. I felt embarrassed for her, we never saw her again. It was also disrespectful to us.She then proceeded with great flourish to change all the tablecloths on adjacent tables, waving & smoothing with an exaggerated sense of purpose, presumably ready for the breakfast service. Never have we been made to feel so unwelcome. We were the last remaining table, but it wasn't late at all. I was seething - obviously it was time to go. We asked the head waitress to kindly call a taxi, to which she replied that it was usually impossible to find taxis at that time of night. We gave her a business card of a local firm.We were ushered into a sitting room with an unlit fireplace next to the hallway to wait, which was all of 5 minutes. I didn't want to sit down, I just wanted to get out of there. The attitude here completely spoilt what was meant to be a special occasion - front of house is vitally important to the whole experience.

This is the time of year when Horn of Plenty offer their charity lunches which for years we have supported. Just returned having experienced menu B. Really good. In the past portions tended to be on the small side. Right for me but not really for a man,but this year just right size. We will all return for menu A and will say to one and all, do not miss out.Book now. Thank you to all front of house staff and of course those behind in the kitchen.

What a superb way to see in the new year. From the moment my husband and I arrived we were made to feel most welcome at this delightful country hotel. The New Year’s Eve 7 course meal was delicious, especially the lobster raviolo, and the table service was spot-on. All in a relaxed yet entertaining environment to see in the New Year with a bang. The room was just perfect, clean and spacious with the most magnificent view.Breakfast consisted of locally sourced food with plenty of choice, again delicious. To top it off, a falconry display before we left - how wonderful.Thank you to Sara and her hard working team for starting our decade off in the best way ever.

This is the second visit to the restaurant in three months and once again 3 stars. Whish to be honest is a little unfair because there is much to like: the situation is very pleasing, overlooking the Tamar deep below. The staff and service were top notch and the food represented excellent value for money. But still not convinced about the food, all of it is beautifully presented and you get canapes, amuse bouche etc to make the experience a cut above. But taste not always great- tuna that tasted mainly of sesame, beautifully tender pork cheeks that ate very well but didn't hint at pork and a creamy ravioli that hinted at cauliflower rather than tasted of it..and a beef main that though tender was again slightly off in terms of taste. Still I would go again and you cant say fairer than that.

High quality food, superb presentation. All the staff were friendly, polite and knowledgeable. We were served swiftly. Each course was served with care. The Venison was cooked excellently. Tender, meaty with a flavorful jus. Ashley and his team are amazing, experts in their trade. I can't recommend this place any higher.

Booked afternoon tea for a special occasion and liked the variety of choice. Selected savoury and vegan/dairy free options and both were excellent and beautifully presented. The only thing I would do when we visit again, is ask for a better balance of sweet/savoury for the vegan option. It was aimed more at a sweet tooth and I personally would have preferred more savoury, but that is very personal taste and it was still superb. Our waitress Wendy was friendly and helpful.

My family and I recently stayed at the hotel for 2 nights over a weekend. On the second night we were woken by the fire alarm going off around 3am. My 2 young children and my husband and I left our room immediately and gathered with other guests outside. The young man who was left to supervise that night came to our annexe and asked if everyone was out of their rooms. I replied that I didn’t know because I didn’t know any of the other guests. I suggested he should check to which his reply was ‘I can’t go into peoples rooms can I’ in quite a suprrisingly rude way. He then asked if there was a fire in anyone’s room to which again we told him we didn’t think so but of course we had all left our rooms in a hurry in the middle of the night. He then switched the alarm off and said it’s probably a fault as they had experienced issues with it and we were all told to go back to bed with no further investigation on his behalf. The alarm then went off again with a different tone and another guest went to find the porter but he was now nowhere to be found. Luckily the alarm went off but I was unable to sleep for fear of my family’s well being after the odd non investigation from the hotel.

Superb experience for those who are fans of minimalist Nouvelle cuisine, definitely not stick-to-your-ribs sunday lunch! Everything else is classic English style and grace. Great service. Take a stroll on the grounds, soak up the gorgeous views you gazed at while you dined. Not inexpensive. Needs Booking.

The Horn has a lovely situation overlooking the Tamar Valley and if you can get a table vith that view. We had a set menu to choose from and all of the choices were interesting Rabbit Terrine does not crop up much elsewhere! Overall the menu was ambitious but we felt the food was underseasoned and didn't deliver the flavours it should have. The exception to that were our sweets which were all excellent. The service was friendly but our waitress spilled coffee as she was overreaching herself and she didnt really deal with the situation too well. Worth trying but could have been better

Surroundings so drab and dated. Service was friendly but not that knowledgable. Starters were good. My fish main course (brill) was acceptible but certainly had better - my wife had a lobster rsotto that she said was excellent. Desserts boring but the cheese was good (and local). Not a bad meal at all but slightly disappointing although the staff tried hard.

I’d been meaning to come here for years but had never got round to it. Went today for lunch, for the first time, and absolutely loved it. Beautiful restaurant, great service, and amazing, well priced food. The restaurant has great picture windows overlooking the Tamar valley and even though the weather wasn’t great today it was still a lovely view and the restaurant was bright and airy. It had just the right combination of sophistication and laid back elegance where I’m sure you would fit in whether going out for a special occasion or a casual lunch. We will definitely be back very soon. Thank you.

My husband and I got married here this year. We had the most amazing day which was mainly due to the beautiful venue and friendly staff. The weddings team helped to make the day so special. We loved being able to choose our wedding breakfast and buffet selection. All our guests complimented the food! The weddings team were organised and quick to reply when discussing the details for our special day. The day went so smoothly and way too quick!!

The price charged for a meal at the Horn Of Plenty means it has to be compared with London restaurants and Michelin starred restaurants and I’m afraid it falls well short.

My daughter who is something of a foodie took me there as a treat. From the moment we stepped through the door the service was exceptional. We wanted to start with an aperitif so were ushered through to a relaxing lounge for our G&Ts; which arrived with amuse Boucher. When our table was ready we were ushered through. The table was beautifully laid with crisp linen. Our various courses which were amazing arrived with good timing. We weren’t rushed or left waiting. The staff made sure we had everything we needed but weren’t intrusive. Overall a brilliant experience which I am keen to repeat
