Horizons offer guests - open to anyone - once or twice weekly ? - a three course evening meal served and attended by students supervised by tutors. The standard of food, cooking and presentation is good (they have a Principal Chef who is (so we were told) of Michelin standard) and the ambiance very pleasant. The students - wait(ers)/(resses) and the sommelier - are trainees and pleasant young people, albeit a little nervous at times, but they're a good bunch. It is very good value (ie quite cheap - relatively) and we have been twice. We intend to be regulars and encourage the students. Recommended - do try it !

Forgive the educational title pun but the evening was truly outstanding. At a recent event at which the college students prepared the food and serve it, I was very pleased with what we received. The food options for this event were just excellent and the standard of food produced would rival any local restaurant. I would recommend everyone tries South Devon Colleges, Horizons.

We are on holiday in Brixham and had pre-booked the ‘Mitch Tonks Seafood academy’ evening as we are on his ‘rockfish’ mailing list. What a lovely evening - the students worked very hard and whilst not perfect both food and service were very good. Mitch also did the rounds talking to most guests and we found him to be a very nice person genuinely interested in the students and his guests. We would return if we lived closer.

We often frequent horizons restaurant in the south Devon college. The staff are wonderful and the students very impressive. The food is of a very high standard and excellent value for money. It is great to support the caterers of the future and enjoy a superb lunch or evening meal at a fraction of the price charged in other establishments. If you haven't been before , get down there!

We have just had a very good seafood meal here. The students are very young seventeen or eighteen and they did a fantastic job. The gurnard, salmon and dessert were our favourites out of all the courses. Do the expect perfection,as they are students, but it was a very good meal and very reasonable too.

Went to The Horizon for a meal with a friend, however we were refused a seat because it was full...it was empty. Then after requesting a seat, we both ordered a roast dinner. It arrived fairly quickly and it tasted like bloody soil. The chicken was so RAW that it woke up and hecked off. This restaurant did me such a heck, that I'm not coming back again.

Not many girls don't like chocolate. All the 5 coarses were very good Well done to all the young people involved that made the meal so good and of coarse thank you to your mentors. Our best Christmas dinner at the college since we ve been going there (6th) year

Having been told Christmas dinner was excellent we went today and found it rather disappointing. Turkey was sliced into one large lump, sprouts over-cooked and all very bland. Soup quite tasty but not hot and the bread roll under-cooked. Christmas pudding a heavy tasteless lump and mince pies inedible the pastry so thick and hard. The female staff were pleasant but the males were shuffling around looking most uncomfortable. Tables were presented nicely. Saving grace was that they are all youngsters learning a trade, can only get better and it was inexpensive. I might add I have been cooking mince pies for 50 years and they are still thick and hard!

We booked dinner at Horizons ,after reading reviews on Trip advisor, before coming to Devon on a short holiday. Now we've eaten a delicious three course dinner this evening, I wish we'd booked for dinner every evening of our break! However we have luckily been able to book for lunch tomorrow before leaving the area😊. Everything we had was cooked and seasoned beautifully and the smoked haddock fishcake starter was the best either of us have ever eaten. We highly recommend that you try a meal here. You won't be disappointed.

Several times a year the students at South Devon College host a themed evening in the Horizons Restaurant.Tonight was a Turkish experience. Five courses spread out so there we were able to tackle them all. Over all every course was to good standard and made an enjoyable eating experience. The Students were attentive and Tutors were on hand to help and advise where needed. We were treated to an exhibition of belly dancing at the end of the evening and the young staff were encouraged to have a go too.I would be pleased to attend further themed evenings.

I was slightly disappointed when on arrival I was told that all seafood was off the menu. This wouldn't have been so bad, but this actually cut the menu down by at least two thirds!! The saving grace however was the fact that for every main course bought you got a free dessert! In fact, my 2-course lunch only cost me £3.95 - excellent value.

Your chance to rub shoulders with the stars of the future in the catering world. A Wednesday evening experience with the apprentices. Fantastic from start to finish, ably led & directed by a seasoned professional. The food was great, to deliver that quality of food to 30 covers in such a short time without fault takes serious ability. Too many people to praise. Please, please go (I believe they're sometimes short of customers) Our evening was £10 a head for fine dining. Unbelievable. A must visit. The soft egg & fishcake was sublime.

Decided to visit whilst taking advantage of the dog grooming also offered by College students on a Wednesday evening. When you consider your meal is cooked by apprentices and you are waited on by apprentices the quality is as good as eating out in a posh restaurant. You can easily forget that you are within a college environment. The wine list was impressive and reasonably priced and students are watched and encouraged to serve the wine properly. We had delicious starters of ham hock terrine with pickled baby vegetables and pea shots guacamole served on celeriac . This came with home baked bread. For our mains we had chicken breast with winter veg on a creamy mash which was really tasty and filling the chicken was moist and perfectly cooked and the breasts huge !!I had a delicious home made chocolate brownie with ice cream , my wife had the raspberry soufflé which was the only disappointment as it was a bit like scrambled eggs but overall the food and service was excellent and we would recommend and return.

An interesting evening, showcasing the culinart expertise of students at Mitch Tonks seafood academy based at the college. The evening started with an introduction to the food and matched wines on offer by the students and the sommelier who seemed to have over indulged in his trade as he repeated everything he said several times.in an accent ranging from French to West countryThe food was OK but not fantastice, highlight wa sthe baked scallops and the Gurnard.main course. Overall I found the food too rich, all dishes cooked with a creamy or buttery sauce and I felt there could have been a bit more imagination in putting the menu together. Quite an expensive meal for what was on offer and it seemed like you were paying a premium for the albeit brief presence of Mitch Tonks rather tham the quality of the food

I so enjoyed the dinner in February with celebrity Chef Mitch Tonks working with the College students and staff. The dishes just kept coming and to have seafood and fish cooked so perfectly was a delight. The accompanying wine flight provided by Mitch's sommelier Tim really enhanced the whole experience, which was a delight. It's the experience of the Seahorse Dartmouth at half the price, amazingly good value for money. It was great to see the College students enjoying the experience of being coached by Mitch and Tim to go the extra mile for the customers. Well done everyone at SDC and hats off to Mitch and Tim for investing in the skills of next generation and sharing their passion for great seafood and wine.

We went to Horizons on their 'Mitch Tonks' fish night - he runs the College seafood academy & once a month runs an evening with a set 5 course menu. The recipes and wines are the same as in his restaurant (with a much lower price tag!), but prepared by the students. Fabulous food - local Brixham crab was great, and the sea bass main course was the best-cooked fish I've eaten bar none. You can watch the students cook via a big screen, Mitch did the rounds and talked to every table, I tried local wine which was utterly delicious, and the students serving were friendly and professional. The atmosphere was great and it was an all-round great evening. I'm already planning my birthday meal!

I have been here a couple of times, once for a family meal on one of their normal fine dining evenings and also for a Christmas meal. Very reasonably priced and very good food and service. The service can be a little slow and some of the waiters are not as sharp as others (some are excellent!) but please remember they are students and are learning, if you do then i doubt you will be disappointed. It really is excellent. I have specific dietary requirements and I called up a couple of days in advance and the chefs were able to prepare something for me that was suitable without any problems. I would really recommend coming here for lunch or dinner. I also love spying through the glass walls at the hair studio!

The soup was amazing and included a lovely freshly baked roll (mine was still warm) then a roast turkey dinner with all of the trimmings followed by Christmas pudding. All this for £13.50. There were drinks available for those who wanted one, crackers on the table and our water glasses were continually re-filled. The service was excellent and the students worked really hard. Portion sizes are sensible so we had room to appreciate the lovely puds.Everything was truly delicious but for us the soufflé and the pistachio ice cream are worth a mention here.So a 3 course meal with drinks for 2 came to under £30! This is a training restaurant run by staff and students of the OfSTED "Outstanding" South Devon College. The students, whose ages range from 16 - 19 in most cases train each year, rotating between kitchen / chef work and "front of house" and table waiting. The food and choice of menu is fantastic and as good, if not better, than some commercial restaurants. This is a popular restaurant and opens Monday to Thursday at both lunchtime and during the evening but booking is advisable. The college also has a partnership with the famous seafood chef Mitch Tonks who can regularly be seen in the college working with students.
