Enjoyed a lovely lunch with my husband and parents. Two of us had the parmo, one had the haddock and chips and one had the burger. Portions were huge, everything was fresh and delicious. Very reasonably priced with a huge menu to choose from. Service was very friendly from the moment we walked through the dirt. We will definitely be back.

Very disappointed, will not return. Chips were greasy and soggy and the vegetables didn’t even get to the table. The food that we were served did not fit the description as advertised on menu. In top of that it was very expensive.

It was one of the worst meals I have had in a long time. Soggy greasy chips (party of 11 all the same) we complained when the meal served and after. 1 meal sent back completely it was cold. Poor quality, I personally had prawn baguette about 10 prawns in it bread not very fresh either. Side salad garnish lovely. I ate the prawns plus the salad about 1/4 of the bread, as did the rest of the party on what they had ordered. Not one person ate the chips. Complaint handled very badly, didn't take onboard the initial complaint when the meal was served ended up being even more disappointed when the meal concluded. The waitress said would reduce the price of the meal, and then didn't. Poor service even poorer meal a very negative experience.

Been before but it's got new people running it. Great improvement and very clean. Food excellent and well worth a visit. Sean has some good ideas and you feel a warm welcome when you go through the door. Well Done Sean.

Fantastic food and service . First time visit but won't be my last . Sunday lunch was delicious all fresh and real Yorkshire puddings . The sticky toffee pudding was the best I've had . I'm so glad we booked otherwise we would have been disappointed as it was all fully booked up . We now need to go back midweek and try something off the evening menu.

I live locally and it was my first time.Saturday lunch time and was very quiet surprisingly as the food was great. I’m looking forward to going again so very surprised to read the bad reviews. 3 of us and drinks less than £20 a head. I’ll be back!

Sorry to say this was the worst pub I have been into, dirty tables and dishes everywhere. Come to the point we sent our drinks back with the glasses as could not drink out of them. In the end left as could not imagine what the kitchen was like. Pub needs more staff and a thorough cleaning throughout. So very disappointing

the food was very good the young man behind the bar was rude the wine choice was almost non existent the chair i was supposed to sit had a large tear in the seat the carpet was sticking to my shoe and the gents toilet urinal was blocked and smelling wont go there again

Normally come 2/3 times a month and we have never had an issue. The normal staff cannot be faulted but have visited today and received the worst service I’ve ever experienced. We’ve been told numerous times in the past they don’t do half pints or pints, and they offer one standard size. No issue. However when we ordered the drinks today, we were given half pint glasses that weren’t even full. We then ordered another round of drinks, that arrived in the ‘usual’ large tumbler glasses (I’d say around 3/4rds of a pint). We then asked for the bill and some containers to takeaway leftovers. The waiter acknowledged our request however proceeded to stand behind the bar cleaning glasses for 10 minutes before we had to go back up and re request the bill. Usual jobs like cleaning glasses etc isn’t an issue, however when there is no other tables in and 15 minutes from closing time, there is no reason for a bill to take 10 minutes. We then re-asked for the containers and they were slammed down onto the bar. Very unprofessional. When we finally got the bill, we paid. This was before we noticed that we had been charged for 2 rounds of drinks in the tumbler glasses. When we mentioned this, I was basically accused of lying, saying that all drinks were served in the exact same size glasses. When I proved him wrong, the waiter then said he would ‘make a note of it’ and when I asked what he meant, he turned his back on me and started a conversation with someone else, even though we were mid-conversation. No apology or explanation was offered at any stage. It’s such a shame for a place that usually has such good service, however if this is going to be the new standard then we will not be returning.

Some of the worst presented food I've seen. Look like it had been cooked by a five year old. Included the hard cheese rind in a dish claimed to be the most popular. Terrible.

Had a late lunchtime cod, chips & mushy peas. Well. cooked, crispy batter, good white fish. Very generous portions -I had been eying up one of the desserts, but I was too full! In spite of that, some bread and butter would have been a welcome accompaniment. Cod and chips lends itself to soft brown/white sliced bread/soft white bun/bap etc, but only a baguette was available. Pleasant, efficient service from Katie.

I booked a table for 10 of us for lunch at the Hope and Anchor in Greatham on the outskirts of Hartlepool just off the A689 the Barmaid was very welcoming and friendly she served us at the bar for drinks then we sat down at our reserved table menu’s where placed on the table our group ordered different meals some of us having the main meals and some of us having the light bites meals the Barmaid brought the meals to the table then brought bowls of vegetables bowls of boiled potatoes and bowls of chip she was lovely kind and polite to us all nothing was to much trouble she’s looked after us brilliantly I had the mains chicken New Yorker with chips the chicken New Yorker came on a large oval plate it was that big I managed to get a few chips up each side of the plate it was vey tasty my friends all said they had loved the food very tasty and presented well and good value for money I will definitely return next month with my hubby for a anniversary lunch

Had a very good lunch from a wide choice of dishes ..can highly recommend the Light Bites as excellent quality & value for money. I had the King Prawn & Chicken dish which was also excellent and highly filling. Chips & salad also good. Nice pub & restaurant and surprised it was quiet at lunch time. Well worth turning off main road for this one. Good pleasant & happy service.

Lovely warm welcome awaits as soon as u walk through the door . Food is lovely 😍 we got the light bite option. Absolute credit to the chef and staff . Well worth a visit. Highly recommended 👌.

Beyond bad. Still in shock at how bad our meal was here. Seeing the photos taken has brought it back to me and made me want to leave a review. I feel people will be impressed by the over generous portion sizes yet that has come at the total cost of actual taste. The garlic mushroom starter had the same thick sauce as the mussels and clearly the chef had plenty left as he used this for the Thai green curry from the specials board I can't even begin to write about the service as this was so slow when the place was really quiet. The younger barmaid was apologetic and tried her best and perhaps she didn't have the authority to offer anything in way of a gesture for an apology. I couldn't ever recommend this place which is such a shame being local but save your money and go somewhere else. I'd rather have less of a portion than compromise on taste and quality. The photos attached should you be wondering what they are or should be, well as we can't do answers on a postcard I'll tell you: one is supposedly a mixed grill but really was more of a glorified full English breakfast very greasy and the other. .... Well, your guess is as good as ours but it was ordered as the Thai green curry - the green in this instance relates to the brocoli and not the strength of curry! You could stand your fork up in this stodge, absolutely terrible!

I booked a table for 8 people based on what I had heard and reviews from other people. Saturday night and only 3 tables were busy, now I know the reason why. This is possibly the worst meal I have had to endure. 4 x Starters were ordered and although not the best they were edible so not the worst start. Out of the 8 main meals ordered, 4 were left and 3 were only half eaten. 1 person enjoyed her parmo!!! The so called chef should be done under the trades discrimination act as he ain't no chef.... I could describe what was wrong with each meal but the review would go on forever. The service was beyond bad, the ladies were really nice and did try their best, however when a plate of scampi comes out on its own then a good 5 minutes later still waiting for the chips to come with it is just a joke, oh this was whilst serving a few other plates which also came with chips!!! scampi was cold by the time everything was received. The Tai chicken curry was a plate full of carrots and brocolli with a garlic sauce boasting the consistency of custard, obviously this was left. Constantly had to go to the bar during our meals to order drinks, sometimes waiting again a good 5 minutes to get someone's attention whilst the meals are going cold. Two people decided to order a dessert, reason being they have to get something right.... well a chocolate sundae arrived and no chocolate, unbelievable. Atmosphere, well their wasn't any, this is a really bad place to visit and I honestly cannot understand how anyone can say the food or atmosphere in this place is worth visiting for. I really try and support local businesses but this will never get another penny from any of the group we went with. If I was a chef and 4 x full meals were returned, 3 x half eaten meals returned then I would be really embarrassed and would want to know why, not one person was bothered, have to say worst experience in a very very long time. This is 100% an honest review so you have been warned.

We originally wanted to go for Sunday lunch at the spotted cow at Elwick, however due to it being fully booked, the owner said to try his other pub the hope and anchor in greatham and we would get a table no problem. We were greeted with a warm welcome and the light bite Sunday lunch was fantastic. We now book every Sunday now and love it.

One member of our party had a hair in their food which the staff kindly sent back and got sorted out. The other food was incredibly greasy, apart from the sad salad accompanying the food. Also the place was freezing. Not up to the same standard as the elwick pub which has the same owners.

I love this place. Great food at a more than reasonable price. The staff are always very friendly and helpful. Would definitely recommend.

We are very close in proximity to the Hope and anchor so it is too tempting not to cook at home. Great fresh food and lovely atmosphere.

The service is very good and the menu is extensive. There is a good range of drinks. The only downside is the furnishing and decor which are aged and threadbare. However I understand that a major refurbishment project is planned in the next few months....

Wow, not to be missed. Excellent food and service. The pub is due for a refit shortly, which will enhance the whole experience. Good for couples, families, get togethers with friends. High recommended

First visit on 29 November for family birthday lunch. Food was excellent. Portion sizes large and the quality of the food first class. Service very good. Will definitely come back. This and the Spotted Cow has the same quality food

My friend Allison H recommended this venue and off we went. Quickly seated and dink’s order taken. Quiet when we first went in but busied up. I had the steak and ale pie and Dave had a humongous beefburgher. It was super ace. Chips sensational and gravy to die for. Formidable fodder. Very efficient staff. Please don’t change it too much when you refurbish.

Just had garlic mushroom starter and light bite hot shot parmo with home made chips delicious. My wife had light bite scampi salad n chips massive portions . New owners well done.

This pub has been closed since September 2018 , To Let sign is on the outside of the pub , hopefully it will reopen one day. Greatham village once had 3 pubs , The Smiths Arms , The Hope and Anchor ( being converted into flats) and the Bull and Dog (which is open) A village shop and Post office are still open.

I fairly regularly visit this welcoming pub, sampling the generous portions of food, the corn beef pie being a particular favourite of mine. The staff are always welcoming and I always leave with the intention of returning in the near future.

Called for drinks only, enjoyed what we had, nice atmosphere. It was a Saturday early evening when we arrived, the pub was quiet, however it was getting busier as we were leaving. There were menus set out on the tables which appeared to have a good choice and an appealing specials board. The staff were very nice and the locals appeared to be friendly.

Had a great night, food was very good and there was a quiz to follow which was different from the normal quiz, it was like bingo quiz. Would definitely recommend.

Love the food here. Visit regularly with my gran for Sunday dinner and my partner. Can't fault the value for money. Reasonable menu considering it's a small village pub. Portion sizes are huge. And can't beat the homemade chips

Después de haber reservado para comer el domingo para 6 personas, me ofrecieron una alternativa vegetariana de brócoli y papas hornear. No parece que sea muy apetecible, y como me ofrecieron un porción de gambas y patatas fritas, nos preguntó si podía tener una porción de adultos de este. La respuesta fue "no". Me traían parte de un niño de gambas y patatas fritas en un plato de té, sin verduras. Me sentí totalmente absurdos y pedí un plato más grande.

This is a typical village pub that has kept up with the times and serves good food too. This is also the "local" with a good community spirit and good conversations......you're not a stranger very long.

Visited with friends who are regulars but it's been quite a while since we were last here. The pub is still the same and we received a friendly welcome. We decided to skip starters and go straight for the main course. I chose the chicken and steak combo and was very pleased with my choice, wifey had the steak and shrimp combo and she thoroughly enjoyed it. My mates steak looked great and that could be my choice next time. The gammon steak chosen by his other half was just as good. Four great meals at very reasonable prices, good beer and a friendly atmosphere. I predict a return visit soon!

Went to this pub with my family on mothers day for lunch it was a last minute decision so we had not booked a table,as expected it was very busy but they still found us a table after a short wait and boy was it worth the wait,the food was fantastic and plenty of it and very reasonably priced,the staff were first rate and could not do enough,will be back without a doubt.

Brilliantly friendly staff the pub owners are always around either tending the bar of serving guests. The pub is always filled with friendly regulars who could make any stranger feel at home. The staff maintain the pub to a high standard ensuring that the place is always clean and tidy. Excellent price's for everything on offer here and the food is not to be missed. With a range of tradition pub food to the hearty north east favourite of a chicken Parmesan the pub has plenty to offer. This is the pub to go if you want to be treated by a smile.

Been here quite a lot and it's a lovely place for a quiet drink and meal on a night. Got the 10oz sirloin steak with chips and Diane sauce and it was lovely. Place is very welcoming and great service.

Have been here many times for their Tuesday night quiz, but this was the first time we wanted to eat also. We went for a only main meals despite the wonderful selection both in the menu and on the special board. I had the steak and chicken with tasty veg. The food and service was great, all in all a great night. Sadly we did not win the quiz, maybe next time.

Had a family gathering here after a funeral, really varied buffet and they opened early to accommodate us. Friendly helpful staff
