Me picaron mal aquí.

Went to this pub for a Sunday roast as I’d been before and it had always been good. Looks like they might of changed hands since then. The veggie filo parcel was tiny, cauliflower was cold, beans were hard and chicken was a grey colour which looked like a manky old pigeon. When I informed the young guy behind the bar he said the cauliflower had just come out of the microwave so should be hot and the beans were cooked as they think the customers would like them (tender) and apparently the white wine the chicken is cooked in turns it a putrid grey colour. No offer of money back, complimentary drink or even to reheat it! All in all the worst roast and customer service I’ve ever experienced.

Picked this pub via google as we were looking for somewhere to get a late Sunday roast, arrived at a quiet little pub asking if they were still serving dinner to be told they would be in half an hour, so we ordered a drink and headed off the beer garden which turned out to be a large and busy sun trap. The lovely barmaid came and told us when the kitchen was reopen and our food came out quickly - perfection on a plate and lamb that melted in your mouth.Staff were all friendly, food was lovely, pudding choice was limited but very nice and very alcoholic overall we’d highly recommend.

All was well until barman innocently knocked over my colleagues half pint of cider. After trying to brush over offering another I eventually asked for a replacement. The barman started pouring a replacement, however to my humour only poorer in the glass what he thought he split. Good job I visited this put after reading the reviews - on a lovely bank holiday weekend (a rarity itself these days) I visited with friends and had lunch in the garden which is a peaceful location in the middle of a busy city location - I thin one reason why it is quieter is that it is out of the way which is fine

The website says "friendly staff" - don't believe it. On a very quiet Friday night in the Hope and Anchor my friends and I, a group of 15, were asked to move away the bar because "We were preventing other customers getting to the bar". We would have understood this request if the pub was packed but there were only 5 other people in the pub and half of the bar was being hogged by two locals who were monopolizing he two bar staff in deep conversation all evening. Frankly I'm not surprised the pub was empty on a Friday evening. We left an received a much warmer welcome in a pub nearby. It's a pity as this pub could be so much better.

Good range of ales (enjoyed Otter and Bath Gem beers), prices are okay and the food we had was pretty nice (giant dish of tortillas, chilli etc, some decent chips, a veg burger, which was a bit no-frills). More of a traditional pub than it used to be and that's not a bad thing, though it was less full than it used to be at the weekends. It was warm and cosy on a freezing day. And the landlord was cheerful.

My partner & I had the vegetarian roast & when mine came with hardly any gravy,, so I asked politely for some more. Rather than simply getting me some more, the waiter went off to have a conference with his manager and then came back to tell me that if I wanted more then I would have to buy it! When I protested about this he simply walked off and ignored me. Besides from this, the Yorkshire Pudding was stone cold...all in all, a thoroughly miserable experience.

Our daughter took us here without realising it had changed hands. We had vegetarian roast, which consisted of veg with a puff pastry tart on top smothered in the most peculiar sauce. Potatoes were cold, dry and chewy, other veg was tasteless and tart undercooked. Why put puff pastry with roast and then cover with horrible sauce? Staff didn't seem to know what they were doing, the guy who brought our food just plonked it on the table without speaking. They said they'd run out of puddings then the woman who appeared to be the manager said they had apple crumble (which to be fair my husband said was very nice). Not on the menu and bar staff had no idea what price it was. The whole thing seemed to be very unprofessional, so disappointed. Won't be back.

I had a voucher on Wriggle, so me and two friends went for an evening roast dinner. I'm guessing it was what was left over from the Sunday lunch but it really didn't matter as we paid very little with the voucher. It meant we got three meats, all the vegetables and other trimmings in one huge yorkshire pudding (which was a little burnt). It was delicious and very good value! Unfortunately, the draft beers I recognise and like were all off for some reason, so I was forced to try another Pilsner but it was fantastic! Definitely worth a visit, staff seemed a little 'off-ish' but it was 7 on a busy Sunday, completely understandable! Not too 'off-ish' to ruin the visit.

Although this isn't my local I wish it was. The staff are friendly, the beer choice and taste is excellent and the food is quality too. In addition it has even when busy a laid back, relaxed and welcoming ambience. There is a beer garden out the back that creates a haven from the bustling world outside where you can drink and relax and /or eat. A recommend I give cautiously, I don't want too many off you coming here, it will spoil it, just enough to sustain it.

Booked in advance and pre ordered beef roast and the vegetarian option. Staff very friendly and accommodating. The roast had come recommended so was looking forward to it as looking for somewhere for a work do ( we have a few vegans and vegetarians ) however I was really disappointed. The vegetarian roast consisted of cabbage, carrots, leeks and a root vegetable 'stack' which seemed to be a slice of more stacked veg - maybe more carrots?Couldnt really tell.Accompanying roast potatoes were ok....Yorkshire pud was home made but over cooked and the vegetarian gravy just seemed to be bland vegetable stock. There was no seasoning or thought put into what was basically a plate of boiled/steamed veg :( I'm sorry but there's no excuse it's just lazy to stick a load of badly cooked, badly seasoned veg out.The beef roast wasn't much better - I ended taking the meat home for the dog. But " gravy to make your mum blush "? she'd have only been blushing if she had made it I'm afraid and not in a good way. I'm sorry but this needs more attention all round - I won't be going back for a long time and will need convincing!

The Volunteer is one of my favourite pubs in Bristol so I thought I'd try the Hope and Anchor. It is, as one would expect, a lovely pub - good beer, friendly staff and furnished and decorated just right. The food menu promised good things but the roast beef was hugely disapponting. "40-day hung, glazed in black treacle, cooked in rosemary & thyme, sourced from Hereford" sounded fantastic but all that appeared were a couple of slices of an overcooked brown leathery substance which had little or no discernible taste. This accompanied by "seasonal vegetables" that included whole green beans - seasonal in Kenya no doubt, but not in Somerset in April unless global warming or polytunnel techniques have advanced further than I realised.I'm not saying it was bad, far from it, just a bit dull and the sort of Sunday Dinner you'd pay seven or eight quid for in numerous pubs around Bristol. But this cost £12.95......

I visited for the beer festival the pub was hosting early last month. There was a full menu of ale on offer, and as a bonus each pint was only £2.50! The pub must have been seriously losing money on some of the higher alcohol quantity ales, but as a student customer I'm hardly complaining about that. The selection was brilliant; a truly wide variety of styles and tastes - even in only drinking half pints I could no way have sampled all that there was to try.Staff were also very friendly and talkative, and gave good recommendations on the ale flavour combinations. Unfortunately, due to the festival, a "try before you buy" was refused though. Atmosphere in the pub was incredibly pleasant, with nice scenery and comfortable wooden surroundings to place oneself on. It is not difficult to see why it is a firm local favourite. From the city centre it is a little bit out of the way and up an uncomfortably step hill, but certainly worth the walk!

The pub is as I remember it and the staff were very friendly. We had a couple of pints of very nice beer. I was disappointed that the duck pizza mentioned in the offer details wasn't on the menu (it did say it was an example listing) so we went for the chilli beef and goats cheese, spinach and pepper ones. They were huge and the base was excellent, crispy and light - however, the toppings were underwhelming to be honest. There was no chilli heat on the beef one and no spinach on the goats cheese one. Both were quite underseasoned for our tastes so we added plenty of salt and pepper. Real shame as they were close to being amazing. The 4 stars are for the lovely staff and gorgeous beer garden. Would definitely return.

A popular pub half way down Jacobs Wells Road, it consists of a single L-shape bar along with a good size terraced garden at the rear which is a welcome and unusual feature in this part of town. It is, I believe, recently under new management, and is now run by the same team behind the Volunteer tavern in St Judes. Landlord was friendly and helpful. Décor wise, it’s fairly traditional with sanded wooden boards on the floor, and cream plasterwork on the walls along with some dark mauve wood panelling on the lower part of the walls. There was wooden bench seating around the perimeter and well as chunky wooden tables and chairs. Various knick-knacks were dotted around including a model sailing yacht and a motor boat complete with remote control in a nod to the pubs name perhaps. The wide window sill contained an assortment of miner’s lamps, a good selection of board games and a pile of Giles cartoon books. A number of beer mats were fixed to the wall, suggesting a frequently changing selection.Food wise, the menu offered a selection of burgers, pizzas and sandwiches as well as a few “pub grub” dishes such as sausage & mash, pie of the week, fish & chips, etc., and these were mostly priced somewhere around the £10 mark. There were also a few specials chalked up on a board. I opted for the sausage and mash, which on this occasion were pork with maple syrup I think. Whatever they were, they were very tasty indeed, as was the accompanying gravy. If I were being critical, I would say that there was really very little gravy and I had assumed that the “buttered veg” referred to on the menu was something other than just the potato. A pizza on the other side of the table was also well received. There was a good an unusual choice of beers on tap which on this occasion were Oakham Citra, DBC Flashman’s Clout, Gyle 59 IPA, Milkstreet Beer, Wickwar Cotswold Way and Flying Monk Elmers. Details of these were all chalked up on a board above the bar, as well as a couple of further keg options. Ciders too were well represented with Symonds Founders Reserve and Lilley’s Somerset on tap (the latter of which went down very well), along with Slack Alice and Red Rabbit served from boxes behind the bar. All in all, a great pub and well worth checking out.

I have been to the hope & anchor a few times since it was taken over recently and there has been a real transformation for the better. The food menu is SO much better, offering the best roast in Bristol! There is live music in the lovely beer garden and a really fun pub quiz on a Sunday night. Everyone there are really friendly and the staff are lovely. Highly recommended lovely pub!

We visited this wonderful pub for a meal and it was superb. The choice of food was very good - and the chicken & mushroom pie was delicious (our compliments to the chef). The service was excellent with the young man taking time to explain the various dishes in some detail - also the young lady was most courteous and helpfulI loved the floorboards which made the whole place feel warm and friendly. Outside seating is an advantage in the hotter weather. All in all - a fantastic place and we'll be going back as soon as possible.

I used to love coming here for food, it had possibly the best menu of any pub in Bristol - lovely salads, quiches, pies, lasagnes, with lots of vegetarian and fish options, reasonably priced and good portions.Unfortunately it has had a change of ownership and now has a very expensive and very limited menu, with roasts only on Sundays. There is very little for veggies or semi-veggies, unless you think a meat roast with vegetables instead of meat counts as a meal, or £12 for a ploughmans is good value. It is a pity as it is a lovely pub and the staff are friendly. I do hope the new owners get their act together!

Called in for a drink and sat in the room at the front. Lovely atmosphere and lots of board games including one which I used to play as a child. Great choice of cask and keg ales. Visited on a Sunday and the roast dinners going out looked fantastic. We did return later in the evening for some food but by this time it was a little late but we were able to get pizzas which were very good.

The Hope & Anchor is an excellent pub serving well-kept ales and delicious food which is more than enough to pull in the punters. However, from the quirky music to the retro clutter, it's aching to be cool. It really doesn't need these trappings of Hipsterdom because it's already offering a good product. The main part of the pub is light and airy but the back room is coldly lit and you feel like you're eating in a junk shop because of all the 'strategically-placed' objets d'art. It's all just too much. Lose some of the luggage and add some warmer lighting and this could be more than the front room's neglected sister. The service is friendly and efficient although my companion felt that the barman was better at talking than listening. The Hope has a lot going for it and is well worth seeking out.

Had a lovely fish dinner (not fish and chips) in the restaurant and enjoyed the atmosphere and people watching. The owners were working and are lovely to talk with. They most likely think we are just pesky Americans asking loads of questions, but we were tolerated graciously. :)

Q: How many Country & Western singers does it take to change a lightbulb?A: Two. - One to change the bulb and the other to sing about how good the old one was.I used to run the Hope & Anchor for a goodly span of time (20 years) and handed overthe reins to young whippersnapper Pete Gibbs in January this year. There have been the inevitable grumblers, whingers and nay-sayers but these arein a (diminishing) minority.I ate in the garden of the Hope & Anchor on this lovely sunny Saturday afternoon.Beer battered Fish & Chips. Perfectly cooked fresh fish in exquisite crispy batter. Chef Marc Fleming knows what he's doing and he really takes the game to the customersI am absolutely delighted that, going forward, the old ship is in good hands and with a clearvision for the future.Pete and his team deserve support in taking this lovely old Bristol institution to a whole new level.

This little boozer has had a gentle makeover and great new menu. Its a central location pub with a great little garden. The beer selection is always great and the bar staff friendly and knowledgeable. Great range of spirits, some of them local, on bar. The food is fresh, well cooked and delicious. Eaten in the pub a couple of times and really enjoyed it. The veggie burger or stack is tasty and juicy with fresh veg on the side. The veggie roast is the best in the city. Amazing veggie parcels with all the trimmings. Veg not over done like some places and the roasties were very crunchy but well cooked. I'd recommend throughly

We were out cycling on Monday the 6th April and popped in on the off-chance.The day was lovely and we sat in the garden in the sun, we ordered from the light-bites menu and between the two of us we have six dishes for the offer price of 3 for £10.Amazing really tasty food, dishes were larger than expected and we struggled to finish.A lovely way to eat with lots of options to suit any appetite.Garden was being "tidied up" whilst we were there although I think the landlord was working on the idea of destruction before improvement !! very entertaining.we would definitely go again and will tell all our friends. There is another pub owned by the same landlord "the volunteer" I think, and we will try that as well. All in all a memorable lunch.

Visited on Bank Holiday Monday as wanted to sit out in the sun enjoying a good drink and nice food. We soon learnt that the H&A is under new management but that hasn't changed its ethos at all. Great quality drinks, large selection of beers and some good wholesome sized portions of food. Very reasonably priced too. Garden out the back was quite a sun trap so a super lunch was had by all. Would thoroughly recommend the fish finger sandwiches! No pre packaged frozen fingers here - crusty white bread, homemade tartare sauce and rocket accompanied two large pieces of fish. Mmm mmm!Definitely worth a visit. We'll be back.

As in previous reviews I also have drank and eaten at the hope and anchor for many years and also know the previous owner martin and yes it was a lovely pub with great food and beers , so is this new incarnation different ? Yes , is it worse than before ? NO !!! Firstly the new landlord , is infectious with his enthusiasm for this pub , it's not just another business venture but a real zest to do something good and get it right . For people to criticise the food is just not fair , after trying Sunday roast the first time just had come back , so much so have visited four times in the last five weeks , now that's a recommendation it is to die for , good selection of meat and veg generous portions which is always a plus and the taste of everything is top drawer , empty plates every time , even took one of my more fussier friends there , and she loved the food not one complaint , oh yes one more good point if you ask for more gravy , there's no I will what I can do , it comes straight out in a more than ample gravy boat ( good job ) So is it just a Sunday roast place ? NO ! My girlfriend and I ventured in on a lunch time , ok the menu is not as expansive as before but there still is a really good selection , I had the sausage and mash and my girlfriend had the burger , to which she raved about ' the best burger I've had in a long time ' but in a spanish accent , and she's not easily impressed . As before the bar is well stocked with all your favourites plus an ever changing array of different beers to try . So there you go an unbiased opinion and not by someone who hates change . Yes, it's not the old hope and anchor it has changed but just a little bit and not for the worse . One last note to the land lord if you're reading this , I also would prefer salt and pepper mills keep up the good work .

The drinks selection is excellent for such a small bar and they offer a range of constantly changing beers/ales as well as some tasty permanent fixtures (Milk Stout from Bristol Beer Factory) .The service is great; Pete is a friendly and informative host full of helpful recommendations (try the pulled pork!)I definitely recommend coming here for any occassion - they also stock a range of very interesting wines which I can't wait to try.

We have been going to this pub about every 3 months to eat for the last 15 years. The food atmosphere and beer has always been excellent. The changes to the lighting makes it a very bright white light which makes it more clinical. The beer is still good so well done but the menu is the same as every where burgers and pizzas. No chilli no gammon freshly cooked. We had burgers, no real taste, the chips were white as if they hadn't been cooked fully. What a shame to see the changes. Sorry but after all these years we will need to find somewhere else to eat when our group meets.

We used to like coming to this pub when it was the previous owner, so brought some guests here for lunch. It was quiet, which is nice thing. We ordered our food with a member of bar staff who seemed very inexperienced. I explained I was Wheat Intolerant and picked a GF starter off the menu (Falafel). The food took such a long time to arrive we almost gave up. When it did arrive, The fish and chips were greasy, the burger was dry, apparently the soup was nice, but my falafel was awful. I can't even tell you! Three little "bricks" arrived with no moisture it was like trying to eat NoMoreNails. I asked for aioli or mayonnaise. The Bar staff brought something described as Mayo. It tasted so weird, I don't really know what it was. I managed to eat one and a half. Pub is not the same. Apparently the beer is alright, so I'd suggest you eat somewhere else and go for a drink here instead. What a pity.

I've been going to the Hope and Anchor for a decade. It was perfect for a grumpy or hung-over Sunday with the papers. Great beer, fantastic homely food- who could forget the Major Winthorpe's burger, the home made salad dressing in the little glass jug and the mighty Old Ma Riley's omelette sandwich? And the candle-lit evenings under the bunches of dried hops hanging around the place- it all worked.Unfortunately that's all gone, now replaced with terrible unappetising rubbish, inept delivery and the kind of liquid chalk dawb that would usually advertise £4.95 carvery. The staff even seemed bewildered by our request for mayonnaise, and we were equally disconcerted by the pot of what, after a great deal of consideration, I have determined could only have been a mixture of milk of magnesia and tahini.I'm not eating there again, but i might still drink there.

Excellent food and great atmosphere. The chilli sausage and mash with leeks was divine and selection of beers wide ranging. There are interesting artefacts and pictures with lovely furnishing which provides a very welcoming feel to the pub. It was a sunny spring day and the garden is little oasis. We couldn't see any problem with the loos and the prices seem to be similar to good establishments in the area.

I don't want to paint a bad picture of this establishment with a review on the toilets but they say you can tell a lot about a place by how they are kept as it gives an indication on the back of house going ons that we don't see.The pub itself as I understand has gone through a change. For me it has a comfortable feel about it, a nice layout and on my visit, full. The choice of beer was excellent and the quality superb. The menu was the same as its sister pub,the volunteer near Cabot circus and the quality of the food reflected on the price. You can see it's all freshly prepared and home made, excellent flavours.Dog lovers are most welcome as well as well behaved children, the pub was full of both but you would never have known it, you could have a conversation without any problem of being drowned out by an unruly racket of cutlery, kids and barks. As its early days perhaps the fore mentioned toilet issue will be resolved as it does spoil what is a great back street watering hole.

Have been visiting this pub on a regular basis for 30 years and over that time the food, beer and staff have been absolutely wonderful. I was aware that Martin had sold the business but was astonished to find that the new owners have abandoned the extensive menu and opted for a very dismal food selection. We called in on Sunday afternoon and only Sunday roast dinners were on offer. As we do not eat meat but enjoy fish our only option was to have the vegetarian dish which although perfectly edible was a bit boring. Usually the veggie option would have nut roast or similar but this was just vegetables and vegetables. Yorkshire pudding ok though! My wife ordered a large glass of Chilean Merlot expecting 250 ml but the measure was only 175 ml and the price was £5.75!! She declined to have a second glass as she considered the price to be a rip off. No salt and pepper pots but salt and pepper mixed in a bowl together! What is that about? How many unwashed fingers had previously been in that bowl? Pub was cold because the heating " keeps switching itself off".I had 2 pints of beer which were very nice. I love this pub and I am dismayed to have to write this review. I hope my comments encourage a change of approach.Valuable Customers.

The first thing you notice about this pretty pub is its ability to be cosy and spacious at the same time. The staff were helpful and friendly. Despite the pub having only been reopened for a few days since a management takeover earlier in the month a full lunch menu not having been decided on yet, the staff rustled me up a gorgeous Cajun chicken burger that was a perfect balance of texture and flavour. I'm not a real ale drinker myself but friends I was there with seemed to really appreciate the selection, and the wines were certainly delicious. Nothing prepared me for the garden though. Backing on to Brandon Hill, it benefits from three tiers and mature shrubbery means there are numerous spots, which considering the size of the garden, are surprisingly private. Believe the hype on the brand new painted wall out front. It really is secluded. The pub is easily accessible from Park Street across Brandon Hill park, or it's just a five minute walk down from the triangle, or a 10 minute walk from the waterfront. Highly recommended!

Located on Jacob Wells Rd at the bottom of Constitution Hill the pub is a cosy escape, especially in the cold winter months. Serving a selection of lagers and ales, its a nice place to go for a quiet drink, but its food has helped make a name for the place too. A big favourite at the Hope and Anchor are the burgers. They are well priced, fresh and tasty. When you're tucking into one you really sense you're eating something wholesome. I'm aware that wholesome is not a typical word used to describe a burger, but somehow these are - you can really taste the meat. With a double portion option for the very hungry, (two burgers on top of each other) and a selection of toppings and side it'll satisfy demanding appetites and the price for the meal is a very reasonable £7-£10. In the evenings on the weekends it can get busy, so get there early!

This is our favourite lunchtime pub in Bristol. A cosy, charming British pub with great staff, ales and beers that you can taste first and a very extensive menu. Their chips are gluten-free and if there's anything on the menu you can't eat (gluten, lactose, etc) they're very happy to substitute it with something else. A brilliant selection of cheese, including several goat's and ewe's cheeses for those of us who are lactose intolerant. They even have a bottle of cider vinegar for my chips! Well worth the visit if you're in the area.

Tonight 4 of us (adults), had a meal at The Hope and Anchor, a favourite pub of ours, to eat and drink good beer. The barman, friendly as always, recommended Nut Roast. It was dire! Inedible. Reheated veg, loads of potatoes, rock hard outer and soggy inner nut roast, covered in watery gravy. Completely tasteless, and warm not hot. The others had beef burgers. They were very average. The man serving us our meals was confused from the outset by which beef burger was the chilli one and it took several attempts to sort it out. When our plates were collected we were not asked if we had enjoyed our meal.......I wonder why?We have in the past had good pub grub. What has happened?Sadly next time we will be eating elsewhere.

My partner and I ate here earlier this evening - we sat in the garden, which is a large space with some nicely tucked-away tables and benches.I chose the whole trout with a salad and chunky slices of brown bread. Nothing complicated - just served stuffed with dill butter and prawns, and very tasty indeed. The other half's falafel (fnar fnar) also seemed good, though as with most vegetarian meals, I think, would have been improved with a nice fat slice of bacon.Good value here also - £25 for two main courses with a drink each. In the lovely Bristol Spring Sunshine, what could be better? :-)

Went here for pre theatre drinks. Two regular soda and blackcurrants cost £5!! It's £2 in the Bristol Beacon. The disabled toilet should be condemned. You have to ask for a key, which is always annoying, and the toilet roll holder looks smashed and hanging off the wall, the mirror looks smashed or very distorted, and it looks like it was once an outside toilet that has been built around! The ladies isn't much better with as many toilets as possible crammed into a small space which means having to contort yourself to get in there and close the door. Certainly won't be returning to this place although I doubt I'm it's usual customer anyway. Can't comment on the food as the place was near enough empty with noone eating. Tellingly, The Stable and No 1 Harbour side were both full of people eating and drinking.

The staff seemed utterly miserable. There were used plates and glasses on every table. It was 30 mins before our food arrived and the burger bun was black from being burnt. It was one of the most disgusting meals I have had, burnt, tasteless and do not even try the garlic bread, unless you like chewy, rubbery, non-garlic foods. Don't waste your money or time here.

Tidy pub with lots of seating, inside, outside, and upstairs. Toilets were a bit of a hike. Food and drink very standard for a Spoons. Guinness was rather nice and well poured.
