Just came back from a Halloween party at The Hook and Hatchet in Hucking. Our kids, aged between seven and ten, had an amazing time. We booked dinner, and the party started at five with a high-quality disco and games for the kids. They gave our kids a party bag on arrival, which was a really nice touch, and the atmosphere was fantastic. The party games were brilliant. I would highly recommend this evening to anyone with kids who enjoy Halloween parties! Plenty of candy was given out throughout the evening, and even some at the bar. It’s great to see a pub host such a fun event for kids. At 8 o’clock, it turned into an adult Halloween party. We also come here often for breakfast on the weekends. It’s one of the best breakfasts I’ve ever had, offering great value for money and wonderful surroundings. If you have a dog, it’s completely dog-friendly, with great walks on your doorstep in the estate. I can’t recommend this place highly enough. Well done, guys!

Most of my reviews are three stars or above, as I do not like leaving a bad review if a place is understaffed, facing a crisis, or someone in the team is just having a bad day. However, I like to warn when it is bad, and praise when it is good. This review gives a full recommendation from start to finish. Hook and Hatchet wins my five stars without hesitation. The pub is situated on a country road within an area of outstanding natural beauty. There is ample free parking. The public (and dogs) are made to feel very welcome. Horses are also 'watered' free. This is a family owned and run establishment and it shows in the superb service and standards. There is ample seating inside and out. The garden area is well tended and there is plenty of seating - apart from reserved tables, you are free to choose wherever you wish to sit. The food and drink options are extensive, food freshly cooked to order, and helpings large. Tables, cutlery, toilets were all clean, and the atmosphere friendly and unhurried.

At first our experience was great with the waitress being really friendly and helpful. From then onwards, we had an awful experience. The food was pretty average and our next waiter/waitress we had were very rude which ruined the whole experience for us. We were offered a desert menu and within 2 minutes she came back to take our order. We politely asked if we could have some more time, in which she gave us 1 minute and came back again saying “have you decided yet?” Then I said “I’m not going to have a desert, but please may I have a Coke Zero?” She abruptly went “can I do deserts first”… I never bothered to have a desert because I never actually had the time to look in all honestly. Then shortly after once my friend had her desert, we got the bill. We felt that we were pushed out and they wanted us to leave. Wouldn’t go back there again. Staff were incredibly rude.

We went to the Hook and Hatchet last night and the food was awful. We both had calamari and it was sooooo deep fried and tasteless (frozen item). I then had the cajan chicken burger that was extremely dry, was supposed to have garlic mayo in it and there wasnt any sauce in the burger, the chicken was very dry and the bun was just a bread roll, the sweet potato fries were ok (but these come frozen) and the coleslaw had a funny twang to it. My partner had sausage and mash and it was OK. A family near us had fish and chips and they was tapping at how hard the batter was! We didnt bother with any desserts and the first two courses were so disappointing. The menu is boring which is a shame as last years menu was so fun and exciting and the food was stunning so clearly its chained hands / chefs and its now your bulk standard 90's frozen food menu thats deeply fried and processed. Nothing fresh on the menu. Had we been asked how are food was, we would have stated this at the time but not one person checked on us and we couldn't leave there quick enough, after such excellent food last year, I didn't bother to look at the menu before coming, something I will now do, sadly we wont be returning.

Visited here recently for a birthday celebration. Was really looking forward to trying the roast, but unfortunately it was very average with small portions. 3 potatoes per meal with 2 slices of meat. 2 of us went for the mixed meat roast which was more expensive, this came out with 1 slice of pork and 1 slice of beef. Same amount as the other roasts ordered so didn’t understand why it was more money? Yorkshire was very tough. Pub was very loud, we were sat on a table next to a large booking with children running around and screaming. Couldn’t hear ourselves have a conversation at some points. Service was really slow, had to keep going up to the bar to ask for more drinks, more gravy, the bill etc. Was eager to leave once we finished eating due to the atmosphere not being relaxing at all and having a banging headache. Such a shame!

We decided very last minute to come and stay for NYE. The grassy camping area was out of use due to the wet weather but we were kindly offered a space in the car park with electric hook up which was all we needed. We arrived a little late (due to traffic) and it was absolutely no issue, had a lovely Sunday lunch before getting our camper van into position! Being New Year’s Eve, they had an evening function which was well organised and lots of fun! It’s so nice to see a pub so child friendly and dog friendly! Our little one had an amazing time, made some new friends and danced the night away until almost 11pm! The lovely ladies behind the bar even came round to tables taking drink orders. The toilets and showers are AMAZING! You’d never believe they were camp site amenities! Shower was lovely and warm, toilets clean and warm too! So refreshing! As I write this now, it’s NYD, I’m enjoying a lovely warm cup of tea waiting for breakfast! The dogs have been made a fuss off by the staff and given lots of treats by the staff. Nothing is too much trouble for the staff. Definitely recommend 100% and we will definitely be back! Thank you so much!!

Such a shame - the pub is so beautiful in a gorgeous location, but it was totally let down by the very lazy menu / cooking on the occasion we visited. We went on a Sunday and it wasn't that busy when we arrived. There were a few tapas style nibbles (olives, bread), but only 2 starters (prawn cocktail and soup). I opted for the prawns, which were watery, pre-frozen bullets in a very lack-lustre Marie Rose sauce...with lots of water at the bottom of the cup. My husband ordered the Sunday roast - chicken. It was abysmal. A very dry chicken breast, with over cooked veg (all sitting in water which did nothing for the cauli cheese), and a flat, crispy Yorkshire pud that should never have made it onto the plate. My father in law had the burger, which he enjoyed, but i had the pie...steak & ale - sadly the pie was stone cold in the middle and the hard pastry crust far outweighed the filling. the crust was thick and rock solid. Such a shame as the filling was quite tasty. No apology for the pie being cold either. The menu is limited, so if you're going to have a small menu, at least make sure what you are putting on the tables is exceptional or at least hot - there really are no excuses for such lazy cooking.

The location of the pub is incredible, but the Sunday lunch today was poor. The nut roast lacked seasoning, flavour and - crucially - any discernible nuts! It was a very strange lump of rice and mashed up kidney beans, which appeared to have been baked and then covered in gravy. Vegetables were very over cooked and mushy, and my partner’s burger was black on the outside and undercooked in the middle. The side dish that we ordered didn’t turn up, despite us asking the waitress and being told ‘she’d go and see’. When I went inside to ask for a refund of the misting side dish and give a waitress feedback, she was apologetic (it wasn’t her fault, of course), but we won’t be coming back anytime soon if this is the standard of food now. It’s a shame, because we’ve visited on quieter midweek days and had quite nice sandwiches/baguettes for lunch. I suspect that the kitchen simply doesn’t have the capacity for the number of covers they want to get through.

On our first visit to the Hucking Estate we came across by chance this “oasis in the dessert “ after an hours dog walking in the rain. On arrival all of the staff were so friendly and hospitable. The first member of staff told not to worry about our rather damp appearance with two bedraggled pooches in tow. We were ushered in to what felt like a really warm and well presented pub/restaurant. It felt clean and fresh with some lovely pictures and knick knacks dotted around. We’d planned to have just a quick drink and a bag of crisps but because of the welcome and feel of the place we stayed for 3x Sunday roasts. These arrived really quickly and were hot tasty and perfectly sized. We were asked a couple of times if we were ok and the mutts were given a treat each too. We waited almost an hour for our food. When it arrived it was luke warm and the chips were sweet like they had been sprinkled with sugar. I had ordered chicken in a creamy mushroom sauce with peas, and I swapped new potatoes for chips. The sauce and peas were missing. I was told it was because the till hadn’t worked for a few minutes so they had taken it from what the waitress wrote down! They only had to look on their own menu, it was the only chicken dish on there! The waitress went to ask about my peas and sauce but I was told it hadn’t been done because it wasn’t on the waitresses notepad. The food was dry, charred in places and looked appetising- lack of colour. Not once were we asked if the food was ok. Strangely enough, even though I was served food that wasn’t on the menu, the price was as advertised for what I had chosen. Very overpriced. I could have stayed at home and with a little effort dried up some chicken. A very disappointing visit.

Our first visit to this quaint country pub, but certainly not our last. Set in beautiful Kent countryside, this pub really is in the middle of nowhere. The food was served in good time, very tasty and absolutely great value for money. The atmosphere in the pub is really nice, and the service spot on . Would highly recommend, you will not be disappointed, we will be returning very soon.

Visited early evening in October, firstly it is not the easiest place to find. But on saying that it is well worth a visit. Nice big car park, and lovely country pub. Had booked in advance and was shown to our table, a very extensive menu and good selection of drinks. A lot of time had gone into the Halloween decorations and there was a lovely atmosphere. Food was excellent , although I felt there was a long wait to deliver the starters seeing the place was not over busy. And then the main course was delivered immediately the starter plates had been taken, I would have liked a slightly longer delay in the mains being served. The service was excellent, will definitely be returning.

We thought we were on a wild goose chase when we followed the signs from the main road, trying to find this pub. But luckily we didn't give up and eventually there it was just around a bend.

Me and a few friends decided to hit somewere different for a change. And what a surprise we had. Tucked away down a small country lane. But defo worth the drive. Loads of outside seating. As well as inside. Never got to try the menu but something cooking on coals smelt amazing...

We went after a walk on a hot Sunday so it was busy. I had a chicken salad which was not really worth £10 . I had to ask for the couscous which had been left off. The guy behind the bar wasn’t very friendly either so I don’t think I would bother again.

Our eldest daughter had booked us in for a Sunday Roast, this pub is in the middle of nowhere and right in the countryside. On arrival we were shown to our reserved table. This pub is dog friendly so was ideal for our daughters dog Ned. After ordering our drinks, there is a great choice of beers etc, nobody wanted starters except me and I ordered the carrot and coriander soup which was served nice and hot together with half a baguette which was hot together with butter, it went down a treat with the soup. After that we ordered our roast, my wife and daughter had the chicken and I settled for the slow cooked lamb shank, altogether served nice and hot with red cabbage, peas and yorkshire pudding together with gravy. We cannot fault the food, infact it was the best we have tried for a long time and compliments to the chef and kitchen staff. This place is amazing certainly worth a visit, it has a caravan and camping field in grounds at the back, a burger bar etc out the back plus plenty of outside seating when we have good weather and also a place for horses and their riders to stop for a rest and get refreshments including their horses and nice for the kids to see the horses, plus there is plenty going on entertainment wise throughout the month.

I visited the pub with a friend. She wanted to take a walk in the woodland, owned by the Woodland Trust, where she has a tree planted in memory of her mother. Having the pub nearby and also serving vegetarian meals made it into a really nice day out. It is wonderful to see the pub back open again. The people running the pub have put in so much effort and organised so many different events.

Brought our caravan here and stayed for 4 days - last day today. Have eaten in pub 3 times - each time had a perfect meal , the Sunday Lunch was superb , portions were so generous we couldn’t manage a dessert- and they looked so tempting. Taking into consideration how very busy it was we had amazing service. Great atmospheric pub , full of character- extremely clean and well looked after. Friendly, helpful and efficient staff- extremely well run & professional establishment. Absolutely fantastic to see such an extremely dog friendly pub - no segregation whatsoever even in restaurant area - perfect and lovely to see such a mixture of dogs welcomed. Surrounded by beautiful countryside with the Woodland Trust Hucking Estate literally on the doorstep. Dog walking paradise. All in all a pleasure to have visited and well done to the owners- it’s obvious how much hard work is put into the place - and by the looks of how busy it is - it’s paying off.

Had a lovely weekend here, food was tasty and reasonably priced, Saturday evening was great fun with a music quiz, would def recommend booking well in advance we were a large party and obvious a very popular evening not a spare table in sight. Hillside camping was very nicely set up, the shower and toilet facilities were a nice surprise very modern, clean and the nicest I’ve seen. Nice touch to have some lovely hand wash and hand cream in the toilets. Showers were lovely and warm, had a boutique hotel feel not the usual drafty toilet and shower blocks you expect at other campsites. Highly recommend a visit we will be back very soon !

Pleasant staff, nice food with some homemade dishes in the restaurant part. Remote locations on top of the north downs access via narrow single track lanes. Great place for a summer evening with quite country grounds to sit outside for a drink. There's also a camp site facility but I don't have any knowledge of it

Went there for a short break as there was camping at the pub and we were truly wowed. They have obviously put a lot of effort in as the bar, restaurant, garden and camping field were beautifully presented. We were lucky to be there for their Thursday open mic which I would recommend as it was fun all night and had so many talented people. Topping everything off was the staff as each one we met on our 3 visits was so happy, smiling and helpful.

Wow! What a fantastic evening with extremely talented musicians and singers. We both had a scooby snack at the bar which set me up for a good boogie on the dance floor.

We went to The Hook & Hatchet Inn for Sunday lunch with my brother who lives nearby. After driving through many narrow country lanes it seemed to appear out of nowhere!. We had a fabulous lunch which was well cooked and the menu was varied. Staff were so friendly and helpful , you could even bring your horse here for lunch. Just tie him up at the horse park outside and he can have as much free water as he wants!! We will certainly be visiting this establishment again.

Didn't eat, just a pint with old friends I had not seen for decades. The place now has inside toilets but it's otherwise very much as I remember it. A proper old village pub with a warm welcome. Must try the restaurant some time. The walls are decorated with old clocks and memorabilia, which are for sale.
