been going to this place on and off for years but this time would be the last rubbish service my husband had to ask them where the food was won ton soup large had hardly any soup base the only thing that was good was the chips and curry sauce its gone down hill

First time I'd been there, no acknowledgement , went to sit down, waited a while then realised had to order at counter, only one other table , around 4pm on Wednesday in August, food was ok, large portions, service pretty bad, didn't even say goodbye on way out. Only went there as usual dim sum place was closed for holiday

My favorite beef chow mein in Portsmouth. So smoky and the meat was tender.

I had the salt and pepper squid and vegetable spring roles. And it was absolutely delicious. Very reasonable price for the amount of serving on the plate. Authentic taste! The service was quick. Good for casual dinning. Will be back!

If I could leave 0 stars I would. Ordered a takeaway, but the order was declined due to lack of ingredients, sweet and sour prawns, hard to believe, but never mind. I asked for the order without the prawns, but was told it would take 1.5 hours to get to Southsea, so no takeaway. The guy sounded like he could not be bothered to do the order. The money was taken out of my account and I still have not received a refund almost a week later. I keep getting told that the manager has to do it and he will call, but I am fed up waiting. Appalling service and unacceptable and theft. Be careful when you order from this place.

When I was at college this was one of the coolest places to go. Now it just seems like it's all deliveroo or Uber riders. Food is still good though.

Hong Kong Tea Bar was my dad's favourite Chinese. He passed away recently and we have visited a few times in recent weeks while sorting out his house. Always good, reasonably priced, food, I can see why he liked it so much.

Food was brilliant, best chinese takeaway we have had in some time, tasted great, good portion size, and did not disappoint so a FIVE STARS from me. Small issue with one item, and a earlier than expected delivery time but the customer service to sort that out was also FIVE STAR so I am more than happy to use Hong Kong Tea Bar again. Do not hesitate to order from here, they are really great. Thanks!

Good food but nothing special. The ribs were reheated. The actual restaurant is very messy with a big pile of deliveroo bags and random furniture. A calour gas fire completes the scene. The guy who served us was nice. There are a few tables if you want to done in but it is very much a cafe not a typical dining in Chinese.

Food is ok. Curry sauce was watery. Onions need to be split better same as the chicken. Good to have plenty of chicken but smaller pieces would be better

Avoid. Ordered online for collection and order was declined due to one part of the order being unavailable. Was still charged for this order and 13 days later..still no refund!! Advised in store it would be 3-5 days so paid again for the order in store without the missing item...absolute scammers, and the food isn’t even good 😡👎🏻

Disappointing, noodles were definitely burnt as I could taste the char that it was cooked on. In addition got given the wrong order

The Singapore chow mein was so spicy my friend could no longer enjoy her meal. The chicken with pineapple was flavourless, just boiled chicken tossed in a pineapple syrup. And the order was late without even an apology on delivery, the driver seemed mad he was even out delivering at all. Wouldn’t order again.

Two excellent dinners WELL made and taste nice. Not all greasy like some places, but just right - we WILL be ordering again, the delivery was also very prompt!

My favourite Chinese and our go to for when we order, good variety of food and it all tastes amazing. The crispy belly pork is one to mention, never any issues with this Chinese and would gladly recommend to anyone close enough. The food always tastes amazing, a lot better than most Chinese that I have been to.

I asked the restaurant to serve the dish with no veg, veg was included. I then spent no less than 6 minutes on a call with the delivery driver saying he knocked my door which was totally false information, and then proceeded to direct him to the correct location. Although the delivery was early, the food was lukewarm, and rather slimy. This is thee worse order I’ve had from Hong Kong Tea Bar. I’ve actually moved away and thought I’d treat myself, as currently staying in the area again. But I was utterly disappointed with what arrived. Shame on you Hong Kong TB. A lot has changed, changed for the worse it seems 😢

Disguising food all cold and forgot half of the order and delivery driver getting all lairy and snatched the food back off me

As a decade long patron of HKTB I am very disheartened by the quality of the food the service from the staff and the lack of information on the app. Anyone who buys from this restaurant would be used to great quality & taste we didn't get this on our most recent order and considering the increase in prices I was very dissatisfied to receive my order with no portions of rice as has been traditionaly served by them with all dishes ordered, when I called to question I was met with a brick wall comment we don't do it on justEat as they charge us to use there service? If you order in person or on uber eats you get rice. To say I was disappointed is an understatement £35 for 3 dishes and a portion of chicken balls and no rice to accompany the bland flavourless dishes. The restaurant said call the manager later or we can come pick up the food you decide. So heads up you don't get a side of rice with your dishes you havw to order on uber eats for that. To the restaurant consider your practices and weather they make sense, you don't have continuity and you have made a choice to pay for a app service to promote your business the customer shouldn't miss out because of that choice. I spent 10 years driving to pick up my food with no issues.

It was late but wasn't the restaurants fault. They wer more than happy to resend my items as the app changed my address to another. Food was still lush an will order again

We ordered Sweet and Sour Chicken which was already £4 overpriced being £8 for such a basic meal. The Meal arrived with NO RICE ???? Come on.. was expecting £4 like most places to include rice, you cannot eat a tub of sauce alone! The app says you can choose to debone the meat but there is literally no option to debone the meat, so we left a note in the order to ask to debone and it arrived with bones. So both orders were wrong and overpriced on top of the app using an incorrect address.. so it was delivered. So sad to see the quality of my favourite place gone down and the prices gone up. Won't be using again :( Very dissapointed.

I ordered from here usual order on their website but was down got charged same price as the cafe website, when the food arrived no rice with meals, telephoned to be told the curries do not come with rice so i asked why does it come with rice on their website to be told it’s same price with no rice on just eat however no where does it say add rice as extra or comes with no rice, telephoned restaurant to be told no rice basically tough needless to say after twenty years of eating meals from here this will be the last

Food was very bland and the sauce was just not nice on both beef in black bean sauce and duck in plum sauce not really what you expect when you are paying 40 quid for food will definitely not be ordering again

This is just a cafe, no need to get dressed up, it’s appearance it that of a back street cafe that you would expect to order a breakfast from, with its plastic school dinner like tables and vinyl floors unless you know better you might walk past, but the food is amazing at such good value, lunch here can cost you as little as £6.50. Lots of students use this Chinese tea bar to have traditional cooked Chinese food, including students for Chinese origin, because it’s great food.

I have not eaten here for many years . A friend reminded me how good it was. They were not mistaken , first time back for Saturday lunch was fantastic , so good that we returned a fortnight later . The food was fab . The house special with noodles and belly pork with rice , were scrumptious. Hearty flavoursome dishes , full of meat and perfectly cooked vegetables. The portions are huge and actually too large . However the taste just makes you want to keep eating . The chilli oil served as a condiment on the table , packs a mighty punch . Whilst the taste of the food needs no enhancement , the chilli oil makes good dishes even better. This place is a cafe, if you want a refined atmosphere and decor it is not for you . If you want great authentic food then it is for you .

Usually really pleased with the food we get from here, but tonight really disappointed, the king prawn balls were rock hard and the rice was flavourless and had hardly any pork, chicken or prawn in compared the the numerous times we have had the same dish. Unfortunately we couldn’t make contact as they had closed before our delivery arrived

Before the pandemic I was a regular here and rated it highly . After the pandemic I found that it had been taken over by new management. I find that the staff are not as friendly and standards have slipped. The food is generally good but not as nice as it was for some reason The toilets have been out of order for around 2 weeks now and the nearest toilets are in McDonalds which staff encouraged customers to use. It is around a 5 minute walk away which is not convenient. Last time I went in there was a notice saying there would be a slight increase in price. Today it cost me £10 for S&S chicken, fried rice and a can of coke. That is a £2 increase in my usual order which I would not call a “slight” increase. For those who have not eaten here before I would like to point out that the portions are quite small but perfect for lunch. It is no longer value for money in my opinion. I appreciate that they have had higher costs passed on to them but I will not be dining here anymore at their new prices. .

Had an epic feast down here last week, if you’re looking for the best and most authentic Chinese cuisine in Portsmouth this is the place to eat! The duck and pork dishes literally melt in your mouth. Pak Choi with garlic is sooo scrumptious!! Dumplings dipped in chilli oil is beyond tasty. The service in here is polite quick and very friendly. Also one of the owners is a very handsome man.

Can't really comment on food service etc as my order hasn't arrived an is 45 mins over the delievey time of 13.15... i called restaurant (at 13.45) to see where it was to be told they are still cooking it when i had placed my order around 12.30. I'm now having to cancel as waiting from 12.30 to 2pm is not okay. Such a shame as its lush food an have always loved this place. also now the prices have gone up I will not be able to make another order again. This was going to be our last takeaway for quite some time so it's rather disappointing.

Really good authentic Chinese food!

I’ve been a regular here for years but unfortunately the last few times I’ve visited there’s always been something a bit wrong. The most recent lunch I had here was a lunch menu item, chicken in batter with boiled rice. The chicken was dry and crumbly, yet greasy. Unpleasant. It’s a favourite meal I’ve had before without issues. Last time was a little dry, this time I couldn’t even finish it. Chicken either stale or fried too long. It’s a shame. I’ll give it some time before returning. Some new faces recently so maybe a change in management?

So disappointing how we really loved this place before but after today’s incident, we don’t think we will ever come back here again. We’ve decided to come down to Portsmouth to visit the restaurant, we had crispy pork belly, beef chop-suey and beef soup which was our normal order but tasted just like water. We were already disappointed with this but the fact that we started vomiting constantly half an hour after leaving the restaurant was just awful! Very unhappy and we’re now suffering from food poisoning.

The Hong Kong Teabar is under new ownership and the experience seems to have improved. At first I noticed changes to the dishes and thought that it was going to be a change for the worse but after going back a few times more I think it's actually better than it was before. The old owners seem to have plenty of issues with environmental health which was always a bit of a downer when the food seemed good. I spoke to the new proprietor soon after he took the business on and he seemed like a decent person. I will be continuing my weekly visit because I love the place. I took my visiting friend there and he used to live in Portsmouth. He said he'd walked past it many times without knowing how good the food was and claimed that his Kung Po Chicken with Singapore noodles was the best chinese food He'd ever eaten.

Ordered for 5-45 delivery, was told at this time that it would be delayed until 6-20 ( fair enough). 6-10 was told it was with the delivery driver, waited until 6-40 and then rang the restaurant and was told 6-45. No apology or even attempt to say sorry for my wait. It arrived at 6-50 and was lukewarm at best and sadly very very bland.

Heard great things about this place and travelled all the way to try it. But when I did, it was okay. The interior could really do with an upscale. The menu is quite large found it intimidating. Pro tip: Triple roast isn't called Triple roast here

I’ve been a patron oh HKTB for 20 years, it’s incredibly rare that there is a problem with the food. The ownership recently changed over to new owners, I ordered soft belly pork which tastes nothing like the old chefs, it was overly salty and not palatable at all. The pork was soft in some areas and dried out in others. I also ordered 3 black bean dishes which arrived without the rice, I called the restaurant to inform them that our rice is missing, the guy on the phone was beyond useless and incompetent, he tried to argue that we didn’t order rice, I pointed out that the dishes ordered come with rice as indicated on their menu, he did not try to resolve the issue, I asked him to resend the rice and he wouldn’t, I asked for a refund and he said he can’t. The new owners need to learn customer service, my family usually love their black bean dishes but you couldn’t taste any black bean at all, it just tasted like soy sauce and black pepper, there was never any black pepper in this dish before. The service was so poor I informed them that in the 20 years we’ve been patrons of HKTB we will never go back and inform our friends and family about the awful experience, ultimately had to raise an incident with PayPal for a partial refund!!

Don’t know what happened to this place, new owners riding on the coat tails of the brilliant previous owners. £6.80 for half the normal portion and no rice. Uber eats does not say it doesn’t come with rice whereas it came with rice before. Called the restaurant very confused and asked to return the food as the value was incredibly poor for what we had paid, wouldn’t accept return or deal with the situation. Been eating at Hong Kong tea bar for 20 years this is the first time I’ve ever complained about them, the picture is a tea spoon, the container is half the size of before minus the rice that should come with it. Won’t ever be returning there again after the terrible customer service received.

08dec21: I am giving a review for the three delivery orders that I have had in the months of October and November 2021. I really enjoy the meal Beef Brisket with Dry Ho Fun, very flavorful. So yummy! I usually purchase two of this meal each time I order online from Hong Kong Tea Bar in Portsmouth. See photos below. The first time that I had ordered ever from this restaurant, I purchased and tried the Chicken in Honey Sauce, Shrimp Fried Rice, and Beef Brisket with Dry Ho Fun. My delivery arrived very quickly like less than 20 minutes. All of the food was good. But the Beef Brisket stood out to me (what I wrote above). The second and third times that I had ordered, just the two Beef Brisket meals, the delivery took much longer. One of my orders didn't arrive until almost two hours later (I had to call to find out where my order was, this was a Monday or Wednesday), which I had pre-ordered a little bit before the restaurant opened. So I am thinking that the Beef Brisket had to be prepared and cooked, maybe? I would have given 5 stars but the very late meal delivery will have me give 4 and a half for Hong Kong Tea Bar. And I will continue to purchase the Beef Brisket with Dry Ho Fun while I am in Portsmouth attending my MSc degree programme. :)

Had to wait two hours and 30mins for a takeaway that was due for 40mins... I also rang up twice both times told it be with you in a couple of mins but it wasn't. Turned up pretty cold too! Also to add on top of this they have now BANNED me on from ordering from them on Uber Eats. Not that I would of ordered from them again mind, but seeing this has made me put this review on. I expect they would be busy on a weekend but lying and not seeming to care on the phone calls is not right. Food was average for the price anyway.

Ordered a meal at 4.10pm. Food left the restaurant at 4.50pm. I phoned the restaurant 3 times and the food finally arrived stone cold with stodgy rice at 5.50pm! Will not be ordering from here again!

Ive been going here for many years (Since childhood) and I have fond memories! The food range is very good, and if they make a mistake on your order they will take the plate back with no arguments and fix it ASAP. They have always been super friendly and over the past 10 years the biggest issue Ive had has actually been with other ruder customers rather than anything the staff have done.

I love Chinese food. I have travelled to China and eaten it there, and also eaten it across the world. The one thing I have to say about the Hong Kong Tea Bar is this. The hot and sour soup I had there was in the top three, maybe top two That I have ever tasted. It really is that good. Cold Coke, very hot (temperature wise) soup, and a main of beef with ginger and pineapple. The soup was hot, it was spicy, it was thick, it was moreish. It was so hot, I managed to eat my main while waiting for it to cool down. The food and service is excellent. Dont be put off by the exterior, this is a cafe not a restaurant, and if you want great food, give it a go. Please try the soup, you will not be sorry. I aim to go back, many times, just for the soup, and maybe some prawn crackers for dipping.

Some of the best Chinese food you will eat in the Portsmouth area & beyond! I always say if the Chinese population recommends the food,as they have, you know the food is very good. Great quality food, plenty of it & the prices are good as well.

Food has always tasted great, it's cheap, cheerful and quick.......better than most delivered takeaways they have their own style and taste, I prefer their chow mein here than anywhere else
