Hong Kong Express in Isle of Wight

My friends and I recently visited Hongkong Express in Ryde, intending to grab a quick snack. However, we ended up enjoying a full dinner instead! We ordered dumplings, soup, and Hakka noodles, all of which were delightful. The service was amazing, and the food was truly scrumptious. We were so impressed that we made a trip back from Ventnor the very next day just to enjoy it again. If you're in the area, I highly recommend Hongkong Express for a fantastic dining experience!

Only positive was really friendly staff. We were on holiday in IOW and got a takeaway from here. Food was tasteless and really disappointing for over £35. Chow Mein wasn't made with egg noodles, was Singapore style literally zero taste 😑 egg fried rice was slightly better but not great. Main Chicken dish was just OK.

The best Chinese we’ve had in a while. The staff were nice and friendly too. Popped in for lunch with the family left very content.

I bought 2 tickets through a travel app, a departure tickets we chose HK Express, on the day we departure Aug 12th, from Hong Kong, We made our self-check-in and got the boarding pass with the correct seats ( paid for over HKD300 reservation). We proceed to boarding and the ground staff stop us , they told us to change the seats , although I felt annoying but followed their instructions, when I settled on my new seat, very soon a man criticised me occupied his seat, I felt very embarrassing and explained it , he showed his impatience, but that’s fine I knew it I should stand up right away to return HIS seat and he will keep quite….the crew in the flight did some help and polite way. Conclusion is the ground staff initiated all the commotions , they change Passengers without apologic manner, also very messy operation cause embarrassing situations. PS, the HK Express staff is very rude manner when traveler check-in their baggage, I saw a male staff scold to people and rush them to check in baggage, also the male staff in boarding gate also very impolite , I never book this airline in the future and never recommend to my friends, very poor experience indeed

Great Chinese food, served by friendly professional staff in a relaxing atmosphere. We visited whilst at the scooter rally, Saturday evening after a few pubs.... can't fault it... will definitely visit again

Customer service is terrible, very rude staff cannot handle a bit of pressure or a busy Saturday night, spent £36 to be spoke to like …. Would definitely avoid in the future.

The chef is originally trained from Hong Kong, and the dishes were delicious & didn’t disappoint me. His son Tony is great in hospitality, knows how to keep customers happy - he cleverly waived the silly extra 60p per container box charges for doggy pack as he knows if dine in customers take their food home & continue enjoy that they will come back already pay higher price than takeaway

An absolute bargain for the price of the food. The best Chinese takeaway in Ryde and the service is a treat! The sauces taste amazing with the fried chicken and would definitely get again. The young man called Rios should most definitely get a raise!!

Really disappointed i have to even be writing this now but ive been a loyal customer for some time now and have unfortunately had an experience that’s changed my tune. we ordered quite late at night so didnt expect the quality to be top notch however - were not expecting this. the chicken inside was completely raw and pink - same with a few of the other ones but just thought it was muscle or something, i was wrong. no hate towards this business at all as i really adore the owners and their great food but it was a shame this got lazily done probably at the end of the day. as we’ve only just eaten i’ll update later on if any of us feel unwell but we are all fine at the moment and hopefully it stays that way. thank you.

Should stick to Chinese food! Not to good at coffee and tea and teacakes

We ordered a takeaway from this restaurant and it was honestly one of the worse Chinese meals we have ever had. You only received two chicken satay skewers for £5 and they seemed to be made from a shop bought curry sauce; they were also luke warm at best. The duck pancakes (six with a quarter of duck when we get 10-12 pancakes from our home takeaways) and a really nasty tasting 'duck sauce' (as they labelled) which bore no resemblance to hoisin. The duck itself was cold, very greasy and bland. For the main course, we had beef in black bean sauce with egg fried rice. The egg fried rice was a dirty brown with very little egg, cold and tasteless. The black bean sauce was *too hot* as it was filled with chilli seeds. It was too filled with chilli to be edible. The beef was chewy and not very nice either. We had to throw it out. Today we both have upset stomachs. Perhaps not good poisoning but definitely a result of last night's food. I would recommend avoiding this place, and I certainly won't be ordering from them again.

Really enjoyed our meal here! We rocked up and took a seat outside the establishment. We we're attended to quickly and given plenty of time to consider the extensive menu. There were plenty of vegetarian options available, and all the food was absolutely beautiful. The staff are attentive and helpful, so if you're passing through please give these a try...

Ordered from them atleast 15+ times before, always quick delivery however ordered the katsu curry when first came out and it was a full meal , ordered it this time and it didn't come with any rice and the website didn't say it didn't come with rice which is a perfectly reasonable expectation as all the other places in Ryde do. when we have rang and complained before on one previous occasion the response was rude and we were hung up on so decided to leave a review instead. £48 for what was a decent meal ( 2x katsu curry, chips, rice and sweet and sour chicken ball) but Is absolutely extortionate, will not be ordering from them again.

Stopped by for lunch whilst visiting Ryde. We ordered Chicken Chow Mein and Salt & Pepper Spicy Squid. Our food arrived well cooked hot and tasty. Had a lovely chat with the guy who served us too.

Extremely disappointed and still in bed from last night severely ill. £35 in the bin and nothing but arrogance from the owner. I’m convinced a large sum of reviews aren’t from customers. Or they had a fresh batch and I had one from weeks ago. Disgusting. Avoid at all costs!

Ordered chicken chow mein, chicken egg fried rice, sweet sour chicken balls and duck pancakes. Was absolutely disgusting, couldn’t even finish it. Everything was hard and cold, generally wouldn’t even feed it to my dogs. Had no flavour whatsoever and was dry as hell. Feel extremely sick now. When called up they said they can not refund you but give you £17 store credit as if I would ever go back there lol. Would not go there if I was you as it was a waste of money. Genuinely think dog food would taste better.

Tasted like it’d been reused from last week not to mention it was stone cold. The chicken was tough the noodles and rice had no taste and the duck was dry, the hiosen sauce was tangy and old. £35 for it all to go in the bin. Asked for atleast half a refund was met with it’s the best there is.. £17 store credit under the condition we’d come speak to Tommy the owner. Not a way in hell am I ever going back free food or not I feel sick and so does my friend who also tried it. Rude and arrogance is unnecessary when you couldn’t pay me to eat this absolute sh t .

Absolutely loved this place great soup,amazing chilli prawns and tasty beef chow mein . I thought the service was great and the business needs supporting and ignore the naysayers and enjoy the food yourself.

Everything was so over cooked. The chicken balls were even awful, I just so hope you can improve because it was such a shame the meal was so bad. We ordered the salt and pepper squid - this was so slimy, crispy chicken - was on the bone and not crispy at all. The broccoli tasted like it had been boiled for days. And the chicken balls were so chewey we couldn’t eat them.

If I could give no stars I would! Ordered £55 worth of food this evening. Absolutely vile. Chicken & beef tasted tough & old. Rice looked questionable & the noodles were clearly off! Disappointed!!

Arrived to pick it up asked if it came with free prawn crackers and they said no which all other chineses we have been to give when you spend over a certain amount. Dishes were all dry and not filled to the top. Would not suggest to anyone.

I had my usual #68 and a side of boiled rice. Food came out piping hot with a hot side plate. The staff are always so welcoming and it’s great to see familiar faces. Thank you again

Not 5 stars! This needs to be seen. disgusting was bland food arrived cold so threw it in the bin. Phoned to complain they asked for a photo so we opened the lid of our bin and took one then the manager of the kitchen said he wanted us too take the food out the bin and the chips that had fallen out all over the bin so he can take it back to the restaurant as is not doing a refund. We said that was unhygienic and that they have seen a picture and we are not going to go through our bin and that they have the photo they asked for!

Really cheeky. It's only cash and carry food. Five and a half quid for chicken satay but only two skewers. Very average food (except for the bill) Lovely young chap delivered but it took the mickey, just such measly portions.... and they REALLY do know how to charge. I'm a local but NEVER again!!!!

Ordered food online with them 2 days ago the food came promptly even tho they had technical issues. I always call up to make sure if my order went through. Service was great, Food was piping hot. Would recommend the Dragon Fire hot and spicy it really warms you up in those winter days we are in :)

I regularly visit Hong Kong express it’s one of my favourite places to go.

On holiday for my partners birthday and ordered a takeaway to celebrate. Delivery was easy and no issues- but on inspection there was no pancakes for the duck. Called but as they told us they would get it out to us in 10-15 mins we left it. The actually meal itself was honestly the worst Chinese takeaway we’ve ever had. All the meat was dry and chewy, the noodles were bone dry and everything was sooo salty. Called up to speak to someone and all I got was well ‘everyone else was happy so it must be you’. Never In my life have I been treated in such a way! The manager put the phone down on me as it was way to busy to deal with me. After calling back got told the only way he could ‘deal’ with me was to bring the food back. So I had to go out of my way to bring the food back to the restaurant. Got greeted by 2 members of staff, scrambling through the food making out we were lying. One of the members of staff behind the bar started laughing at me, which no one should ever be subjected to. After telling him to stop laughing at me, I was accused of being racist. Completely and utter unacceptable. One of the best worst experiences I have ever been apart of. Never ever will I ever return and I hope if you’re reading this you don’t ever treat anyone else the same way.

Genuinely an incredible atmosphere, great food and pretty inexpensive. The moment you walk in, you're greeted with friendly staff and sat down. Has a great way of ordering too, write down what you want on the paper they hand you and hand it over to the staff. Like filling out a simple form! It's a very clever method as it makes for a lot less incorrect orders. The food is amazing, tastes fantastic, ok portions and a good price. I reccomend getting some extra rice with anything too.

Used to be good--avoid and go to Bizzy Wok in the high street instead 👍🏻 Our food was dry tasted old and a bit 'off' too. Manky noodles and veg. Pork balls hard and old dry past it's faff pork inside. Really expensive as well for aged ingredients. Not good. Only came because BW was closed today. Never again

This has been the only Chinese I would eat for the last 8 years, however not anymore. I will not be ordering again. Every order lately has been wrong or missing something and the portion sizes are getting smaller while the price has gone up. And for some reason they have started putting chilli in all the rice and noodles without ever asking if you now want it spicy and why is the special fried rice covered in curry paste? Disgusting and such a waste of money, time to find a new Chinese as this one is clearly under new management and they suck. The person on the phone sounds asleep and didn't know what anything is.

We really enjoyed our food, the people working there were very attentive for they did their best to check everything is ok and make us feel comfortable. The two person meal was great for what we got, it had lots of different variety. The cooks are from China and many of the customers as well, so you know that you're getting an authentic experience. I can't tell you it was the finest culinary experience and I also can't tell you that it was healthy, but for a seaside Chinese restaurant we were all happy.

Portions seemed a bit small for the price. Service left a bit to be desired. It is the first Chinese restaurant to serve only Fosters on tap.

First time in the place.Beef noodles had no beef in it so I went back and they cooked a portion of beef with msg, salt and sugar and black been and tossed it in with my original no beef noodles and made the dish too salty to eat. The beef also was tough like beek jerky. Seriously it was a disaster. I'm on holiday with my family and friends was going to go back with a party of 10 people but definitely not. Chef with the tattoo on his neck looks like he couldn't be arse to recook my meal so told the Philippino dish washer to do it. Disgusting and therefore they just lost out on their table for ten booking. Girl server was new but lovely

Chicken chowmein was spicy..first I ever had that was spicy. Cook forgot to add salt to Noodles, returned and staff told me there was salt but maybe not to my preference. 🙄 I’m a mum who cook from scratch, he simply forgot to add salt! Service so so. Waste of £15

Strong distinction between the prices of takeaway and eat in, but as far as I tasted - it was pretty good! I grabbed a takeaway with my partner since we didn't know when we would get picked up, and the food came quickly. We then wandered out towards the pier to eat, and it was well cooked and had a nice twist to it that I don't often see in other places. We ordered the pork fried rice and beef fried rice - both with good portions of meat and excellent taste. Would recommend! But it can be a little more expensive than other places for similar portions. Nothing too expensive though or not worth the price

Had a great meal for one at the Hong Kong Express. Now I know why the restaurant is called Express. The staff were swift to take my order, the kitchen quickly cooked my meal and my meal was brought to table with an instant smile. Good meal, plenty of menu choice, the restaurant is very clean. Happy to give the Hong Kong Express in Ryde the Harry badge of approval if you want a decent meal at a decent price. Thank you.

A good option in Ryde for having Chinese food. Quantity and quality of food are both decent and wholesome. We tried their pork chow mein and chicken fried rice. Also has a small bar, should you fancy a drink at your table. Forgot to notice if there's an in-house toilet though.

Fantastic takeaway. We are all usually fussy about our takeaways but this was amazing. We chose four different dishes and all were absolutely amazing. Really good value as well. Definitely go for the chow mein and the sweet and sour Hong Kong style!

Set meal b, what can i say,most went in the bin,fried rice very dry,reheated and had a sour off taste, beef curry had red chillies and red and green peppers,the beef was slimy and tasted of fish,that tells me its likely to be off,chicken satay very dry to the point it just fell apart this must be days old and reheated. Sweet and sour chicken very hard chicken over cooked. Plain noodles how do you get them it dry and tasteless they were disgusting. Chicken and sweetcorn soup,this was just about acceptable If i lived on the island i would nevet have anything from here and i could not reccommend, eating herr

We are really disappointed. The food was lukewarm, and the chicken was really tough, you could barely chew it. There was hardly a drop of sauce with our chilli chicken and the whole meal was pretty rubbish. We definitely won't be ordering from here again. Would advise anyone to save their money and jaw muscles and just go else where

Basically extortion!!!! Food is bland and tasteless which is amazing considering how much fat, garlic and onion all these dishes are swimming in. Average of 8-9 pound a dish the portion sizing is appropriate for a 3 year old if that 3 year old was the size of a woodlouse. I understand its main purpose is to serve drunkards at 2am to see them on their way home (as represented in the 90s dentist office decor) but my god have some joy for what you're doing. Please if this is your only option at 4am on a Wednesday in January then fine take it just make sure you've had a meeting with your financial advisor before hand. If you are anywhere near sober at any decent time of day use any other Chinese in the area because even lucky house (where even Ethiopian children wouldn't eat) would be more worth your time and money then Hong Kong Express.

Called here for evening meal after reading some great reviews,fell flat on its face for us! Yes our waitress was friendly and attentive,the decor was better than i'd imagined after reading reviews,but we were here for the food! My wife ordered beef with onion and green peppers,I chose beef in hoisin sauce. When the meals came(with rice),they looked pretty good,however,neither meals had enough "sauce",my wifes lacked onions and peppers,except the odd one,and both of us commented on our slices of beef,although plentiful,were very dry as if pre-cooked or excessively overcooked and left to dry! Sorry. Might be different for it's takeaways,can't comment on them.

I revisited this restaurant a few days ago, having been absent for some months. The chicken and mushroom soup is really excellent - delicately flavoured, almost a touch of haute cuisine, and certainly the best I have had in or from a Chinese restaurant. Lemon chicken was also excellent not at all glutinous, as it often can be, but fresh and tangy. Egg fried rice pleasing too. Pancake rolls are crispy, and and come with a little dish of sweet and sour sauce for dipping, if you wish. Some dishes here in the past have not been so good. Chop suey dishes, for example, MUST be served on hot plates or they quickly become greasy and unappetizing. However, my recent meal was a most enjoyable experience . Service is always friendly, polite and efficient. I shall return soon.
