Hong Kong Chop House in York

This place is closed and looks like it is closed for a while. The owner didn't even bother update their info on Google!

This is a great place to go for some lunch, they have a lunchtime menu so it's great if you want to sample some of the things off the menu just to try the restaurant out, I was the first customer in on a lunch service and they went to the market to buy eggs for the fried rice

Brilliant food, reasonably priced. Well worth a visit !!

Created a reservation for my birthday, arrived from Manchester to find this restaurant is closed with a sign saying ‘closed till 24th November..’ it’s now Dec 13th.. found another place thankfully

We booked on their website and got a response saying we are processing your request and will confirm but they never got back to us to confirm and we phoned several times with no answer x such a shame

We reserved 1h in advance, received confirmation via email and sms. Walked 15 min just to find out the restaurant is closed until 2 days later! Can’t imagine a more frustrating experience than this!

Walked into the restaurant there was no one and very quiet. We have ordered and fair enough the food served very quickly . However the dish were all very salty and oily. The worst part was gave us upset tummy and we didn’t settled overnight till the following day still with sore tummy and urgent of toilet. Not very pleasant experience on our first visit and definitely will not go back there again.

My girlfriend and I visited and really enjoyed our food. We were seated straight away and served soon after. The food and service was great and we would definitely like to return. Highly recommend!

A fantastic family meal! We had booked a table for 7pm and arrived on the dot, there wasn’t any other customers in at that point so we got seated and served straight away. We browsed the menu and ordered quite a few different dishes, our drinks came straight away and the food wasn’t much longer! The aromatic duck starter was lovely however there wasn’t enough wraps, we were maybe 2-3 short of what we needed, it would also be nice to see bigger duck portion options as you can only order 1/4 crispy duck. Our mains arrived shortly after, all of which looked, smelled and tasted amazing. The place started to fill up and before we knew it there wasn’t a table empty which is great to see! Some of the dishes are a little pricey but honestly the taste and portion sizes make up for it! We live 3 hours away from York and are already planning our next trip so that we can come back to Hong Kong Chop House for another delicious Chinese feast! Keep up the great work.

Very old dirty furniture - service was so fast and yet still only like warm food - expensive .. tasteless and tiny plates - the toilets OMG ! Interested to know what the hygiene score is as it should be a minus ! And probably the reason not displayed .. stay well clear !

Tucked away, this hidden treasure is definitely worth a visit. It’s my go to York restaurant and it never lets me down. Great service, authentic menu, the best service and good value. I recommend the satay chicken and the crispy pork soy garlic sauce.

Real Chinese food and tasty. Not too may people on Sunday, but other days could be busy. Main dishes are averagely at around £12 to £17 each with reasonable size.

Awesome food and service! My partner and i got got 5spice ribs, a main dish to share, and 2 bowls of rice, and it was the perfect amount of food. Wait staff was really nice. Atmosphere was very calm and cozy :)

We booked this from the reviews online, we should have taken one look and have walked out. I have been in many Chinese restaurants but never in my long life have I been in such a dirty Chinese restaurant, The furnishings were ripped, worn and fit for the tip, don’t start me on the sole toilet for everyone. I don’t even want to go there. Oh and the ant walking across our table. We placed our order and still my gut was telling me to walk, which I wish we had done. My dish was a chicken and ginger dish, the chicken had had every bit of flavour boiled out of it presumably for the soup and there was not a hint of ginger. My husband ordered a chicken dish with chilli in it, they obviously thought it was ok to chop up a dried chilli and chuck it into the dish at the last minute, hence ending up in him having to spit the dried bits of chilli out. We should have known it was going to be bad when the dishes were served up in less than 5 minutes of ordering. Take my advice, just walk on by and save your wallet. I wish I had taken pics to prove my point. In the end I told them to take my dish off the bill which they at least had the good sense to do.

Lovely food fast service reasonably priced

Scabby bits of meat masked by sickly sweet sauce, portions were also tiny. Paint and furniture all tattered. Would pay more and eat elsewhere.

The best meal I’ve ever had since 5 days in UK.

Some friends and I were stuck for ideas for where to eat on a weekend in York. We walked passed and popped in and so glad we did. The food was absolutely amazing and a little different than your normal Chinese restaurant. Delicious food, fantastic staff and a great restaurant.

Ive been to many Chinese restaurants in my long life but I’ve got to say that our meal tonight blew us away, simply stunning In presentation, service and most of all, flavours, if you are in York and spoilt for choice then I recommend you give this one a try… thank you

I was there last week and we had a set meal for two and it was tasteless, The place was scruffy and some of the chairs were badly marked and holes in them, could not understand us, so was hard to order, should have walked out then,The meal was over £60.00, Won't be back.

Our 3rd visit here now and can quite honestly say it is by far the best Chinese restaurant ever, the meals are authentic Chinese, not westernised for us English, always know it's good when you're the only English in there and it's full of Chinese eating meals. I can't recommend this place enough it will absolutely blow you away.

I was anticipating a tasty Chinese meal, so when checking the Hong Kong chop house online, it seemed to be a no-brainer. Quick seating and friendly staff. Ordered Shanghai fried rice and kung pho chicken. Rice came first, then chicken. Chicken was OK, but there were way too many peanuts. Rice was sorta fried, but not really. Flavor just wasn't there, bland and lacking that fried rice taste. Super disappointed as this turned into a failed test run for good Chinese food. I guess I'll keep on looking, you should too...

This place used to be really good but this lunch was absolutely awful! They charge an extra £2 to add prawns on the lunchtime set menu, I got 3!!! Poor portion sizes and not well cooked. Won't be going here again. You've been warned.

Delicious food and a super quick and friendly service on our visit to York. Look forward to coming back again :)

We ordered a set meal at £52 for two. This included soup, (extremely hot, too long in microwave), no prawn crackers, extra charge £3.25 for about 10 crackers. Crispy duck and pancakes, which was very nice and good size portion. Two meals, sweet and sour chicken and beef in black bean sauce with fried rice. Very good size portion of rice, sweet and sour chicken was lovely and good size portion however beef in black bean sauce smelt of fish. My husband thought it was lovely but I couldn’t eat it. General appearance is old and dirty. Toilet area was poor and dirty. Staff were friendly enough and wanted to please however felt we were very rushed. We ordered two beers, only bottle beer which had been opened and already poured into a glass at £4.95, expensive! Overall a disappointing experience and won’t return. Thought the bill was overpriced.

Me and my mum went here when we visited York. The food is so so good and the service is quick and they were all so friendly. Also reasonable pricing and very filling!!

It could do with a bit of an upgrade. However, I found the staff really friendly and the food was really nice. Hot and sour soup was fantastic. The mains we shared were just as good. I also thought it was reasonably priced. When we left, there wasn't a seat in the place, and people took our table straight away. That speaks volumes to me.

We visit York once or twice a year and this is one of the restaurants we frequent. Most of the diners are Asian so that's a testament to the authenticity of the dishes. I love how diverse the menu is (Sichuan, Cantonese, Taiwanese, Hakka) and most importantly, not one single dish has ever disappointed us.

Went here with my 7 year old son whilst visiting York. We were both very impressed with the food (His favourite food in the world is King Prawns and noodles so high praise indeed) All of the food we ordered was very tasty with good portion sizes and delivered hot and very quickly. The menu was extensive with many very traditional Chinese dishes as well as lots of more familiar items. The staff waiting on could not have been any more accommodating and friendly towards us. Would highly recommend Hong Kong Chop House to anyone looking for a Chinese meal whilst in York centre

Wow what a great place to eat authentic Chinese food cooked to perfection great staff

Couldn't have been happier to have found this place during our trip to York. The food was great, service was quick and they explained things to us well. For what we got, it was incredibly reasonable. It was such a comfort during the cold winter to have hot, delicious food. Will definitely head back here if I'm back in York

Looks nothing on the outside but once inside the food is out of this world, you know it's good when you're the only English people in there and the rest are all Chinese. I would say very possibly the best Chinese meal I've ever eaten*****

Great Chinese restaurant. Super super super quick service. Szechuan chicken blew my socks off - just how I like it to. Full of Chinese people - always a good sign. Highly recommend if you’re not wanting or expecting ‘posh’.

Good value early bird menu. Food good, if a little salty.

We've been here many times before and always been good but this time it was just awful. My daughter ordered chicken curry with fried rice I ordered king prawn curry with fried rice. This was a lunchtime special as we usually have but this time the portions were TINY, used to be a separate bowl of curry and separate rice but this time all on one plate and tiny portions, also didn't taste very good, mostly of vinegar? They charge extra for fried rice and over £2 extra for 'king prawns' these were NOT king prawns, they were VERY small and there were literally just four prawns on the plate. We complained but they did nothing and didn't reduce the bill. We will NEVER go again. Awful food and awful service.

I had a nice meal at this restaurant tonight, 17, 3, 2021 First I was welcomed by 3 lovely waitress, I ordered chicken spring rolls then chicken curry and special fried rice and a drink, I couldn't eat it all so I took half of it home, the curry and rice were in very large bowls and it was very nice, and at a very good price. I would definitely recommend this place. Thank you 😀

May not be big on fine deco but certainly big on fine dining. Brilliant food.

Best little restaurant in York, found it a few years ago by accident whilst looking for another restaurant, nothing fancy, no gimmicks, but excellent food and prompt, friendly service.

We had the mixed platter for starters. The seaweed was good. The ribs were ok, the chicken was tasty enough, the beef just ok. For main course we had salt and pepper chicken and beef in black bean sauce. The beef wasn’t proper beef and not a tasty dish at all. The chicken was ok. All on all very disappointing to say it was £49 without drinks. We shall not be going again.

Lovely little restaurant me and my wife visited whilst on a short break in York. Lovely food, lovely staff and not monstrously priced. If you're in York I would definitely recommend coming here to eat 👍

A quick bite to eat on a busy Saturday afternoon — we were made to feel very welcome and were well looked after by staff. The early bird set menu was great value for money and very tasty! Recommend.

I have never been to such a run down and dirty place to eat a Chinese. The staff were clueless. The food was poor. The toilet was the worst I have ever seen. They were filthy and disgusting. I have no idea how this place has not been shut down. There is nothing good about this place at all.

The Chinese restaurant was absolutely beautiful! We had the set buffet menu..everything was cooked lovely. The staff was friendly. The atmosphere could have been better, i.e. perhaps some music in the background. Overall great visit! Thank you

I don’t normally say this but I truly enjoyed the food. ⭐️ As someone so used to eating Asian food since birth, I approve of this. Probably on my top list of Chinese restaurants in York now. 💫 Have already recommended it to friends, so that is a good sign. I shall definitely return! 😁 The only minor critic I have would be the incorrect spellings of some words in the menu and the siumai that could’ve been steamed slightly longer. Apart from that I think everything was lovely — great and good amount of food, not too expensive, clean, cosy interior design and atmosphere, attentive and polite staff. ❤️We also appreciate that some of the stuff in the menu are homemade (noodles were wonderful!) and that they use loose leaf tea instead of teabags. 🙏 As big tea enthusiasts, this is something we really appreciate. We’ve been to other Chinese restaurants who use teabags only and that was a huge turn off. All kinds of people come here — groups, couples, singles; I think the place is just inviting and cosy that you don’t feel awkward and intimidated if you go there alone. Thank you for the lovely dining experience and I hope to come back again soon. 💫

I was really craving spring rolls so I popped in for some to take back to hotel with me. They was so welcoming and the spring rolls was gorgeous.

Great food lovely and hot too much to eat and reasonably priced always know a place is good when local East Asians are eating there highly recommend it’s not a posh place just in case you want something like that but if it’s good food you want this is the place for you

Looking round for somewhere to eat at 4pm in york gets interesting on a Saturday with all the party goers and tourists, self included. Saw the traditional chinese menu and couldnt wait. Big welcoming smile. Table was comfy ( 5 of us ) had elbow room. Tried several different hot pots, noodles and veg. All very tasty and spicy which we all loved. If you are used to european chinese take away be careful of the spice and szechuan. Very pleasent service. The WC needs modernising.

We looked this up on Google and after reading several good reviews we decided this was going to be our evening meal. The staff were obliging and very friendly. We were both well pleased with the quality of the food, hot tasty and plentiful..My only little quibble being the plates were stone cold, not good to put hot food onto and the prawn crackers weren't very good. I went to this place with my friends. It was a Good customer service. For starters we had Salt an pepper squids and korean chicken Wings but squids were tasty while korean chicken wings was salty and had no flavours. For the main course we ordered singapore fried rice wich was not up to what we expected.

Long wait but great food. We were seated quickly but it was quite a while before we had our drink or food order taken. There were other tables that had been seated after the that had their order taken first. Once the order was taken it didn't take long at all for the food to arrive. The crispy beef was probably the best I've ever had. We also had the duck which I found fatty and chewy with lots of the skin and we had the Cantonese chicken in sweet and sour sauce with egg fried rice which was lovely. We asked for chopsticks which were given as the table is generally laid with knife and fork. I'm white English and think eating Chinese food with a knife and fork is sacrilege. I'm not sure about hygiene in this restaurant. It's definitely seen better days. The wall hangings were filthy with food near the tables and the toilets were not in great condition at all. I probably wouldn't eat here again as I'm not sure on the cleanliness.

Went for lunch special...started with spare ribs, two bones with almost no meat. Chicken fried rice was missing main ingredient! Toilets disgusting.

We went there for dinner with two young children. Restaurant small but very cozy and clean. We didn't wait long for food, and we liked everything very much. The service was very nice and pleasant. I highly recommend it!!

We were a bit nervous taking our grandchildren to a Chinese restaurant as he hadn't been to one before and he is a fussy eater! No need to worry though as he loved it! The restaurant has a very extensive menu and everything is cooked...

We had lunch in HK Chop House. We ordered Chilly Beef, Fried Noodle and Some fried vegetable. Good restaurant and good price. Very good and authentic Chinese food. Recommend.

A super experience. I was caught in rain looking for food and dashed in. So much choice on menu i found it hard to chhose bu went for Crispy duck starter, Fried Hakka squid. The squid was amazing, best ive ever hard. Super attentative service too. I would highly recommend a visit here

I wish I could give this place 10 stars! Beautiful food, great friendly staff and just an all round awesome experience! The chicken spring rolls and steamed pork dumplings were a highlight and they were just incredible! Can’t wait to go back 10/10
