Holt Fish Bar in North Norfolk

This is an excellent takeaway, conveniently situated in the town with a nearby public car park which is free after 6pm. Prices are competitive and the menu is extensive for a "fish and chip shop". Food quality is very good and my wife and I have made this our "go to" local takeaway.

We often visit this area of Norfolk and this chip shop has become our favourite by far. It has a huge choice for vegetarians and vegans so we are able to have a really decent meal. The breaded cauliflower bites are our favourite followed by a vegan battered sausage. A good sized portion of chips are served here. The service is friendly, welcoming and efficient.

Came down to Norfolk from Leicester Friday evening and had a dreadful journey and was very hungry. 8:28pm and I stopped at Holt and ran into the fish bar and asked what they had (I would have eaten anything, I could see the shop closed at 8:30pm! The guy behind the counter said “what ever you want, we cook to order” So cod and chips ordered. Asked if I wanted a free curry sauce and peas, to which an accepted gratefully. Then took my fish and chips home to eat - fab fish and chips and my freebies were tops too!!!! But I was made to feel welcome and not an inconvenience by turning up a closing time by all three of the staff in there - thanks guys - I’ll be back!

Lovely seniors fish, chips and mushy peas ( with any drink, hot or cold, included!). Best we’ve had in a long time! Great position in the centre of the town as well.

5 out of 5 as always we always take away but today we decided to eat in because we got a puppy and it was her first outing so ask if we could come in and of course they said yes ! And just wow we had fish and chip, sausages, cauliflower bites, chicken nuggets and curry sauce and wow it was amazing I now don’t know anywhere else for my fish and chips. Always lovely staff, it was crazy busy but didn’t wait long for my food, all cooked to order not like other fish and chip shops where it’s all on the side waiting, just please please try if your in holt !!! Can’t wait to go back soon !!!🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Nice place and staff, really good chips & curry sauce… but unfortunately the batter on the haddock was very undercooked & soggy. Huge piece of fish so it’s a shame it wasn’t the best. Probably a one off looking at the other reviews.

This place was recommended to us by a local lady, so we decided to give it a try. Admittedly it was clearly a very busy evening for them, but we queued for 25 minutes hoping to "eat in" only to be told that we'd have to wait another HOUR for gluten free food to be prepared. It doesn't take much effort to put up a temporary notice saying "an hour's wait for gluten free this evening" so that people don't waste their time. We ended up going to Eric's, which was equally busy but the staff made room for us and we had our meal within half an hour. (For what it's worth, I really don't like leaving negative reviews, but I'm leaving this one in the hope that it will spur the owners to give a bit more consideration to us poor Gluten Free folk.)

Always friendly, always fresh, always tasty - a great place to get fish 'n' chips. Seating inside or takeaway and a tasteful recent refurbishment ensures the place remains spotless. Excellent.

If you're visiting Holt and looking for some where to eat you must try Holt's Fish Bar. Ultraclean dine-in area with friendly service and fabulous food. Went for a Senior Special - Half Cod, Half chips, choice of mushy peas, beans, gravy or curry sauce which also included a hot or cold drink @ at just £8. Will definitely come again - best tasting Fish and Chips in North Norfolk!!

Friendly staff, food cooked to order, tasty and hot. New decor too. Plenty of seating in a clean and fresh environment. A genuine top-class chippy. Go on, treat yourself!

Best fish and chips in town by a country mile. The guys in there are always friendly and welcoming and they always add something a little different to the menu from time to time to keep things fresh. Around Easter they do battered creme eggs, which are absolutely incredible! You have to try them! Wouldn't go anywhere else, if you want great fish and chips...... look.no further!

This maybe rated 4.5 on reviews but my experience was less than 1 The website says hours open till 8:00 pm When I arrived at 7:25 pm I was planning to pick up a fish supper. I parked up the road and walked back to the shop, as I walked past the window to the door I could see that all the display cabinets were empty although there were still a couple of guys still in the shop. When I got to the door there was a fish wrapper sign on the door CLOSED 7:30 Fortunately there is a budgens supermarket in Holt that shuts as advertised at 8:00 pm I was able to pick up fresh breaded cod, thai fishcakes and some oven chips. So if you're ever on a few days break near Holt and fancy a fish supper, Budgens is your most reliable and very tasty option.

My wife and I have come here for early dinners of fish and chips. We have always ordered the seniors special as the portions are more than sufficient for the two of us. The food is always piping hot and cooked fresh and not reheated. Thanks

Did a large order for our team of volunteers and staff (30 people) as a thank you lunch - phoned the order through and collected on time. All correct with, helpful added items of sauces, forks and serviettes etc. All food was well cooked, delicious and everyone enjoyed the lunchtime treat thank you.

I had gluten free Cod & Chips, which was absolutely fantastic, it is really difficuilt to get true gluten free fish & chips but the Holt Fish Bar totally delivers. We live in Colchester and this was our first visit. We will definitely be going back again. This is the first time I have ever given 10/10 for the owner truly understanding the meaning of gluten free. Thank you so much for a fabulous lunch.

We visited on the night of the Holt ‘Lights on event’. It was really busy with a 20 minute wait but coming from London and Essex I could sense a different and friendly atmosphere. We’re not big eaters and had the old folks deal of half cod and chips , peas and a tea for 2 for £15. Reasonable and good fish but superb crispy and tasty chips. All the family will be back when we visit. We once tried Erics Fish bar and received the rudest of ‘unwelcomes’ from the woman server do their loss we’re a big family.

No frills, no pretensions, just one of the best fish and chips shops in Britain. And you get proper, hot plates.

Staying in Holt for 5 nights, had fish and chips on the first night and we went back again on the last night. Great fish and chips and the best curry sauce we've had. Very good service too. Would definitely recommend to family and friends who are holidaying this way.

Came to holt for a week get away with my daughter. On the Monday evening we had fish and chip take out,we were both so pleased with it,Friday we went back at 4 15 for yet more fish and chips, and of course mushy peas and bread roll,and a cup of lovely hot tea. Had high hopes for fish & chips as per tradition on the last day of our family holiday. Arrived about 6.30 to a sizeable queue. Decided against sitting in restaurant as most tables had not been cleared from previous customers and the atmosphere was fairly smoky with all the fish & chips frying in the same space. We were a group of 6 and seemed to have to wait a fair while whilst smaller groups of 2-3 were served 1st even having placed their order after us. After finally getting our order as a takeaway and sitting down at a bench in town it was hard to work out individual orders as it had not been parcelled up by person & instead done by fish / chips separately. Only 2 of the 6 orders were parcelled up correctly. The fish was in paper bags rather than cardboard containers so was fairly tricky to eat as a takeaway. The chips were decent as well as the sauces/sides like mushy peas. The wait to get our order, the lack of properly parcelled up orders which made it hard to work whose order it was & the greasy batter unfortunately made for a disappointing experience.

As we were in holt we decided to have fish and chips found this one. We ordered cod and chips and a chicken breast. Chicken wasn't that bad but cod and chips terrible. Batter under cooked and the size of the chip portion was a joke and tasted precooked. A med cod and chips £11.15 not value for money.

What can I say - went for a takeaway at 6.50pm (advertised close at 7.30pm). Walked through door and told they were shutting early and no longer serving. Who shuts a chippy before it 7pm (or 7.30pm for that matter)!!? Disappointing as other reviews of food sound good and Eric’s (the other chippy in Holt) was garbage!!

We were on holiday near by as a family of 9, 2 kids, 1 teen and 6 adults and had a takeaway from here. Walking in with such a large order was no problem, they were busy but explained it would be about 10 mins so were offered to sit at one of the tables so we got a drink and waited not long at all. Food was piping hot and tasted so fresh even after a 10 min journey with them, not greasy at all. The only slight problem was that the sausage we ordered which was for the young kids was battered which wasn't advertised (this may be a regional thing) so had to scrape the batter off once we were home and realised. Other than that was perfect.

Having coeliac disease, its so hard to find a chippie that caters for me. I was so pleased after 13 yrs to be able to have a battered sausage and chips . They cook the gf food in separate fryers. The staff are helpful and friendly. 11/10 from me

My first visit to Holt Fish Bar and was disappointed.We had a wait of 45 minutes just to order our fish and chips.There seemed to be a lot of telephone orders which slowed the walk in ordering considerably.I just didn’t like the taste of the batter and chips.Simple as that.Had much better.

For a few pence under £10 for take away fish and chips we expected them to be pretty good. They weren’t. The chips were under cooked and dry. The fish was below average. Plus they only take cash. Not great and we wouldn’t return.

Nice supper from here on a hot busy day. Strict but good Covid/social distancing measures, plenty of staff on - quick friendly service despite being busy. They use vegetable oil and it's very tasty yet healthy. Recommended.

We live in Briston and come to this fish and chip shop regularly. We are veggie and there has always been something for us to have with our chips. After lockdown this was the first place that we visited; it was great to be able to phone through an order and to be able to collect it safely. It is such a popular restaurant that there is sometimes a wait but that is a good thing. Even though they don't have their full menu up yet we are always pleased with what we get and the staff are always friendly, helpful and happy to answer questions.

Rang our order through. When we arrived to pick it up it hadn’t even been put in fryer. Fish was dripping in oil and batter stuck to the paper. We have always used this fish bar since moving to Cley 18 months ago and I know it has been a bad time but the couldn’t care take it or leave it attitude we can do without!

We have been going here for a while and never had a problem until Friday. The chips were really greasy the sausages was disgusting when cut in half the grease just poured out of them and the fish was just a pile of mush we was so disappointed with them that we threw it all in the bin. The Holt fish bar has consistency of a good fish and chip shop I would recommend anyone to go to the shop because the quality of chips and fish saveloys pies and a staff members are excellent you can either sit down or takeaway

Why would anyone go elsewhere when this is the very best fish and chips Holt has to offer.No, no fancy painted chairs, no, no sauce bottles with a picture of the owner on the front, no, you don’t get a box to take your fish and chips away in, rather it being carefully packed in paper and rolled into the traditional fish and chip packet.What you do get however, is beautifully fresh fish, a thin, light but crisp batter, great chips, and superb service in a spotlessly clean, but traditional fish and chip shop. Eat in or take away, the choice is yours, the prices are clearly displayed, and are extremely reasonable.If you want to try a “tourist trap”, then go elsewhere, but if you want traditionally good British fish and chips at a fair price with friendly service, then Holt Fish Bar will serve you the best as it has done in Holt for well over forty years.

We called in on a Friday lunchtime and enjoyed cod and chips, and plaice and chips. Batter crispy, and fish cooked just right. Some of the chips were a bit underdone. Plenty of choice on blackboards. A bit on the dear side but that is typical of Holt. Also they don't take cards so make sure you have the cash.Worth trying.

We have visited this fish bar several times and always eat in. This is by far the best fish and chips that we have found anywhere in the country, and is always excellent.My wife had haddock and I had cod beautifully cooked with light crispy batter.

Have had two takeaway fish and chips from this establishment recently and both were very good. Well cooked chips and excellent batter on the chips. They can get very busy and if you arrive without booking in advance be prepared to wait as they often complete large pre booked orders.

Always impressed with their fish and chips. Never any black bits in the chips and the fish is the freshest, also the batter is very light and is without the all too familiar doughy white layer underneath a crunchy outer. Nice and easy to sit-in too!

Order was taken straight away, then had to wait 20 minutes for it to be cooked while other people came, ordered and collected their food. Scampi was over cooked and the fish tasteless and soggy. Batter was unseasoned and not crispy. It was all cold too. We were not impressed and will not be returning.

Holt is a beautiful little town/village..plenty of shops pubs and restaurants. Lot's of antique shops..nice people.

I visited with my husband for tea on the way to see my mother in law. We've been here several times before but not for a good few years. On this visit we paid high prices for not much food and watery flavourless fish that didn't taste fresh at all. The batter was nice but everything else was far below par. We won't be back

Having moved to Briston in the past year I have used many local food outlets. The friendliness of the staff at this fish bar was superb. I came away feeling like I'd made some new friends. The quality of what we ordered was superb. Equally important was cost. Again excellent value. Little doubt we will become regular customers.

Arrived at 1.40 expecting to be told they were closing but no they offered to cook our fish & chips after helping me in with my Mum's wheelchair. They were served hot and fresh with a friendly smile and they were first class.
