Holmbush Fishbar in Cornwall, Isles of Scilly

Our meal was very disappointing and it not that cheap either. I don't mind paying for good and tasty looking food. But this I wouldn't even give this to my dog. So where do I start. Std fish and chips X3 and a extra std portion of chips ( with free oil ) that's right the chips were soft undercooked and full of cooking oil. The fish batter was very soggy and most of the batter stuck to the box lid, the fish was was not nice. I am not even sure we were served Cod. We also found a blonde hair. Not sure how they achieved the award winning title of best fish and chips if they serve disgusting food like I had.

Terrible quality chips. Hard as nails. Cold and skimpy portioning for what the price is. Claims to be a prestigious chip shop and the chips don’t even satisfy.

Called in for fish and chips today as been on previous visits to this area and it as been delicious but can not say the same on this occasion warmed up chips horrible fish was also disgusting dry and came out of the warmer as if it was from yesterday's batch was supposed to be a large costing 9 pounds would have said it was a medium at best also did not look or taste like cod or break up like cod more like cheep whitening what a waste of 13 quid my advice don't waste your hard earned money

I am local go there at least once a fortnight large fish and chips box for chips smaller and fish regular size in a smaller box 15 quid never again

Awful! Chips must have been sat for hours it was like trying to eat bullets and the fish was tiny with zero flavour. Asked for a bag to carry our large order was told it would be a pound! I mean 10,20 or 30p but a quid. Ridiculously overpriced for really poor food. Will never go again we will stick to the far superior Francines in St Austell just a shame it doesn't open Sundays.

Ordered online, order was cooked on time. Waitress was friendly and polite. Fish and chips were delicious. Lovely chunky fish and chips were excellent. Definitely be ordering again.

Don’t eat takeaway often, but the family fancied fish n chips. So hopped online and grabbed the menu and number for Holmbush Fishbar….but Nooooooo the phoneline wasn’t working! A quick Facebook search revealed they were having phone line trouble a few days earlier - so using the email on the menu, I dropped them a note , enquiring about availability of burgers in their online order form and headed down to order direct. Twenty minutes later with lovely hot food, served by polite cheerful staff I arrived home again. I checked my email to find a lovely reply from Matt Keen, I let him know how amazing the service had been and hoped their phone lines got sorted soon. Today I got another reply from Matt thanking me for my order and advising he had even popped down to the shop to check they had burgers in stock! Bless him. Great service all round.

Curry sauce to die for 😍 amazing. Always a qué at tea time which speaks for itself! We went for lunch, less of a qué but soooo good and reasonably priced for sides and chips! Will be coming again

Great food as always! Had fish and chips and went to the beach at Carlyon Bay to eat. Chips were the best I've had whilst here!

Where to start with this horrendous experience: 5pm my family of 5 all visiting from abroad and outer counties, all want London saveloys and chips that we grew up with, a walk down memory lane, I lived and worked close to Holmbush but now live over 20 miles away. Always had a good experience with all food from there very regularly over the last 25 years. I call them on a Wednesday at 5pm the call drops out, it doesn’t even ring, ok, I will go to website and follow place your online order, ok, that doesn’t work either, it says to call, 17 attempts of calling going online checking we have right number (and we do) we start the journey, we arrive at just before 7pm, there are no queues and I ask for saveloys??? Big mistake, I mention we cannot get through on the phone all 4 ladies shrug their shoulders, 1 then say’s “its broke” ok, why can’t we get online to place our order, same response, all shrug shoulders, ok, can we have saveloys and chips and fish 7 times please, “NO we dont have saveloys” oh, can you cook some please explaining the reason we have made a 40 mile round trip, “NO have sold out” do you have any in the freezer (Fatal Question) we all got met with a attitude from the 2 ladies serving, another customer arrives, we listen intently as he asks for saveloys too, he gets met with “Sold out” he mentions they have another 2 hours of opening can they cook more, ohhhh dear, no these ladies are having none of it, “we’ve sold out there are some in the freezer but no time to cook them” seriously 14 saveloys cannot be cooked when there is still 2 hours of opening time and not a single apology, in fact quite the opposite, grumpy miserable unhelpful staff. I am so pleased we left and drove around to fins a chip shop and visited a lovely little chip shop in St Austell White river I think it is called along the little parade of shops, they had no cooked saveloys but were very obliging they cooked some for us, along with the fish and chips we all waited eagerly patiently and they were served with a smile from the lady serving, the man who cooked them was so helpful friendly and polite they were hot gorgeous and made our families supper a happy one. We are all leaving reviews as we are all so disgusted by the rudeness and responses we received. I wonder of the owner even realises how much money was lost that evening. …

Just popped for some large fish and chips. Large fish cooked to order,good chips and curry sauce was very tasty.10 out of 10 in my opinion thanks guys

Ordered cod and chips X 2, absolutely ridiculous! Waiting after I had paid for them. It was a terrible way to serve in a chippy. Take your money, make a list of Orders and then try snd make them in order.... No completely ridiculous got them all mixed up, my friend ordered before me, I got mine first after a long wait, and he then had to wait another 20 minutes. Never use them again!!!

I don't leave reviews often, but I do like to think its honest when I do. I'll make it simple. £9 for large cod - Not the cheapest in s St austell. Soggy batter in the middle. £5 for large chips - again light on the chips compared to others, and a good 20% more expensive. There is no excuse for charging more and giving less of a lower quality product. Curry sauce - curry sauce seams to be a standard up and down the country. Slightly spicy gravy being passed off as curry sauce is confusing. Honestly thought all chips shops bought the same mix.

We had noticed that this fish bar has been gradually offering worse and les fish and chips at higher and higher prices with smaller and smaller actual fish content more and more batter and more and more undercooked chips. Yesterday marked a new low when we got home and opened our rather expensive fish and chips we found that we had to put the chips in the oven first as otherwise they were inedible and then we found the fish that had to be extracted from under lots of batter was almost non-existent ...an extremely thin salami-sliced like small piece of fish - we live a long way away from the shop otherwise we would have gone back and felt like throwing it all back into the shop; that is how disgusted we were. Definitely the poorest value worst ever fish and chips ever - these guys have gone downhill big time from what it was like around two years ago now basically ripping people off as routine ....

Friendly staff, expansive menu and great portion sizes. Highly recommended

Edit: It's not what it used to be in quality, and last visit they stuffed up the order so we had less than we paid for and less than we needed, causing hunger and arguments when we got the order home. Watch out! I'm swapping to Francines. Disappointing. -‐--- Further edit: It's got worse. Rubbery cod. Chaos ordering. Wrong food on part of our order. Never again! ---- Original: Brilliant fish and chips! AND there's extras such as battered asparagus on the menu!! The best chippy I know of.

This place had some of the best chips I have ever had, coming from Scotland that is quite a statement.

First time customer, not just pleasantly surprised but really, really impressed. Cod tasted fresh, chips were cooked just right and the batter was excellent. Best fish and chips I've had in a long while. Looking forward to going back next time I'm in the area.

I ordered online as spending the last few days with a close relative in Mount Edgcumbe I getting tired of ready meals and it didn't disappoint. My order was ready when I arrived, beautifully freshly cooked and the lady serving was so friendly. The food was brilliant but never underestimate the effect of a friendly face when your customer might have had a really tough day. Thank you 😊

For a change I decided to have fish and chips for our tea!! We only have it occasionally as a treat, as we can't afford it that often. The chips tasted like they were from lunchtime and for a regular battered cod, large chips, a battered sausage which was soggy and anaemic, and spicy curry sauce which was awful!! Nearly £17 for my bin to enjoy, won't be going back,in a hurry.😡

Jasmine took great care of us when we arrived, hungry, late in the evening in the rain and just wanted some fish and chips. She really cheered us up and made the best fish and chips that we had had in a long long time. (And my companion should know, he spent his working life owning and managing successful fish and chip restaurants) certainly a little gem in an unexpected place, and with parking outside too.

Totally fabulous experience, food is always cooked fresh, always really tasty and just as it should be, the staff are always great, friendly and helpful and just great customer service. Always a pleasure to see it eat it and enjoy it. The spicy curry sauce is wonderful and has that little extra taste to the normal curry sauce. Needs to be tried. We’ll be back again probably next week. This time we were in a bit of a hurry and phoned the order through and all ready within a few minutes of getting there with freshly cooked lemon sole.

Love this fish bar. it's not the cheapest but I think it's the best. And they open lunchtime.

Been coming to this fish bar for 23 years and not one issue until recently,the new staff are very rude, unprofessional and know nothing about customer service or customer care. The tall women that works there is very rude and loud, she couldn’t understand my order which was a simple one and even though I clarified on four occasions she still didn’t understand and got angry with me, the manager then took over and told her to take five minutes out, then instead of apologizing for her rudeness then said it must be my accent! Unbelievable, seems there rude and racist. I’m English and lived in Cornwall for nearly 25 years.?

We waited an hour. AN HOUR for our fish and chips. Plenty of people came after us and were served before us. Not on. The blonde lady was really nice and gave us a free curry sauce for waiting. Unfortunately this has tarnished this fast food establishment for us, not what you expect when you just want a quick chippy tea.

I like The Holmbush fish bar they do good food however and it's a big however. They need more staff at the front. Only one person serving waiting customers whilst others are running around sorting out Uber Eats is rubbish. Half an hour wait to be served is appalling. I think we would have been quicker to order up on Uber whilst standing outside as Uber seems to be the priority.

As always there’s a Que.. but best value money can buy… beats the harbour prices and sizes ..

Ordered in person, Haddock cooked while we waited with nice crispy batter and 2 X Cod available. Pleasant staff, service as quick as cooking time. Great taste. Thanks.

Exactly what I wanted!! Fresh coastal fish and chips!! While staying a few miles up the road in Treveague Farm Campsite and Cottages The boys had eaten already down in Gorran, so I knew I had to have some local fresh fish and chips too. We went shopping and then found this place recommended on goggle and they didn't disappoint 👌 Fabulous free parking, right outside by the superstore turning and other shops. The ordering process was very well organised with a phone pre-order queue and a walk-in queue system, as it's so popular. The staff were very friendly and had us all served in no time, so didn't wait long. The fish was fresh, very delicious, and the chips were very tasty too with a generous portion. The whole menu is great value too. The curry sauce topped it all off nicely, which was available in normal or extra spicy. 😋

Excellent food, they were really busy so took longer than normal to get food, but they apologised numerous times for the wait. So staff were great. Highly recommend!

Sorry, but never again. Staff couldn't apologise more for my well and truly over cooked fish & sausage in batter. Gave a full refund, and still apologised again. But over the last couple of years it's the 4th time we had a bad experience.. so no thanks.

Used Google to find a fish and chip shop in St Austell, this one can up. We also wanted a place with a view to eat them. The staff were great and suggested Charlestown harbour, what a lovely place, not usually seen on the usual tourist attractions but well worth the visit. By the way the fish and chips were moreish would recommend 👌 😋 👍 10 out 10 for service and food

Waited 25 minutes apparently phone orders are more important then walk ins. And when I complained I got a lot abuse from a customer so I will not returning

Placed telephone order 20 mins ahead of arrival. Still had to stand in the queue of people ordering and didn't start my order till I got to the beginning of the queue. Then had to wait another 10 minutes. Food was OK. I've definitely had better fish & chips, but I've had worse too.

The quality of the fish has gone down, yet the price has rocketed. I had a large cod that looked like it had been flattened out. There are no nice white chunky flakes that they use to serve. Won't be going back.

First time there had to wait 5 minutes for a customer to tell us which end the queue was not the staff. When we got back to our holiday apartment the food was lovely nice big large fish and one medium and of course chips. No complaints about food.

WOW!! Holmbush Fish Bar catered for our social event at Porthpean Sailing Club on Saturday Feb 18th! Everything was spot on, well organised and clearly labelled as requested (34 orders!) The order was kept hot and efficiently packed as we arrived! The fish was cooked to perfection and the chips (fried in vegetable oil….unlike other local chippies) were great! Thank you for everything! We will definitely be using you again!

Had high expectations but alas….. soggy chips, soggy batter and tepid mushy peas. Tasted within 2 minutes of leaving the shop. Could do better for £11!

Good range of food, okay prices, difference in price on deliveroo is a bit eye watering but in store its okay. Nice clean shop with lovely staff. Best chippy around this area for sure.

Best Cod and Chips we have tasted in England, was so good we went back the next day for more. Fish was fresh and perfectly cooked. the staff were very pleasant and friendly especially, Natalie Estelle Bethany and Tiana. Thank you ladies we will be back in the very near future

made my first visit for many months last night and had to wait 35 minutes for chips and fritters. however, it was so busy with constant queuing outside. the staff, in particular the serving staff, worked so hard and somehow managed to maintain service with a smile throughout my time there. this is a popular place for a reason. the chips and fritters were excellent. so, overall it was worth the wait. i should add that whilst parking is free i couldn't find a space when i arrived,so parked on a nearby road side

As you can see if you trawl through my previous reviews of this chippy we've had highs and lows over the years but this time was definitely a high. I really don't know whether the ownership has changed since I was last here but we decided to have a fish and chip lunch. The fish was lovely, moist and flakey in a really light, nearly tempura batter which wasn't at all greasy. Likewise the chips were well cooked, again not greasy but really hot. We ordered Haddock which was cooked freshly for us and the chips likewise. Was well worth the few minutes wait and even after driving home the whole meal was still very hot. Possibly the best fish and chips we've had in a long time.............

Such lovely staff, quick service and the best food! I have been in there multiple times and every time it’s been nothing but amazing customer service and great food. Been in for two days in a row! My dad loves the food, and all of us do as well! Our favourite place to get chips! The staff are so lovely as well! Highly recommend :)

We came here in a rush, the attitude of the servers wasn't good, they treated my husband with disdain and ignorance, the food though was lush, but unfortunately it didn't make up for their attitude ☹️

We used to rave about Holmbush Fish Bar to friends and family - it was worth the trip from Tywardreath (about 12 minutes drive) but last weeks' was not good at all! We have noticed a drop-off in quality over the recent period of time,...

We used this fishbar a few times, however, we found their chips very dry, but fish was OK so we only buy the fish now

We had spent the afternoon in Fowey but all the fish and chips shops there were shut on a Monday! So we randomly picked up a leaflet and inside was an advert for this chip shop! Off we went and wow! We ordered some chip...

My grandchildren and I had a take out.My battered plaice was inedible as it was overcooked so tough I couldn’t eat it.Friends had a take out at same time and their battered plaice was fine.Disappointed that a highly recommended Fish & Chip shop could produce something so awful

Deliveroo order with missing items, after speaking to the staff at the Holmbush they went above and beyond. Deliveroo wouldn’t deliver so the manager and staff members personally delivered missing items with a lovely apology on the box from the staff for the missing items....

Treat the old folks to a slap up meal. Good old fish & chips. So we popped down, placed our order of large cod, medium cod 2xscampi and 3 regular chips. Order took 10 mins approximately. Staff were great, friendly and jovial. Fish not greasy and chip size for was on the money for us four. Would we go back? yes indeed. Last thing, we all got carried away and wanted our fish and chips so the photos were a last minute thought. However trust me they went down well🤣🤣
