Pensioner's special £7.50 for fish & chips with a hot or cold drink - which sounded like a good deal except the quality was very poor to say the least! The batter on the fish was thin and greasy the chips, I would guess had been reheated - the taste and texture was awful. Even the tea was poor quality. The young girl who served us was very pleasant and welcoming. I don't think we'll be returning anytime soon!

Have visited regularly in the past and really enjoyed the food, alas on our recent day out the food was poor quality and poor value for money. The fish was tiny, not even a child portion. The chips were greasy and hard and most of them went in the nearby bin. Won't return.

Usually good, but this time terrible. The fish was so small it should have been thrown back. The chips were tired and rock hard. It was 15 minutes from closing but the price was the same so I expect the same.

Ive visited this takeaway a number of times and thus it’s time to leave a review. Ordered the fish chips, and peas from the menu. Overall the quality of the food was ok, although the portion size was very large, and it seemed very greasy in the taste buds. Next time I will order the smaller size and thus it will be better value for money. Another point to consider is the place looked like it needed a late spring clean up.

Fish & chips were average. All freshly cooked but not the best chips. Can’t fault the staff though, all were friendly and helpful. Reasonably priced. Restaurant opened at 4:30pm, we arrived at 5pm but they had already closed the eating area upstairs. Was very disappointed with the indoor seating issue. If the restaurant was open until 7pm then the upstairs area should have been opened until 7pm too.

Called in at about 6.15pm tonight, Friday 23rd June. Staff friendly. Thats it. the fish wasnt fresh, the batter was greasy and like cardboard. The chips werent fresh, also greasy and soggy. whatever they cooked them in was smelly old fat or oil. If I pay good money for food I expect nice clean tasting fish and chips. That's all I wanted and i think thats fair. I think you know that this was sub standard and you are doing yourselves or the owners a disservice. If I could afford the petrol I would bring the food back but unfortunatelyinstead, I put it in the bin.

My experience was spoiled because they (2 young women working there yesterday) kicked up tremendous fuss about me putting my own salt and vinegar on. Apparently this is highly objectionable. A shame because the ridiculousness spoilt me enjoying my meal. Fish and chips cost so much these days, the least an establishment can do is let you put your own salt and vinegar on so you can have it as you like it. If they think it’s a hygiene thing then leave wipes out or something. To quibble over something so trivial is uncalled for and unnecessary. I suggest rethinking the “salt and vinegar policy”. The cost of living crisis will be very cruel and only traders putting their customers wishes at the heart of their business model will survive it.

We are on holiday over Christmas in beautiful Holmfirth and today decided to have a fish and chip supper after a 9 mile walk. The service was excellent. The young assistant was patient, polite and attentive. When the food was ready she asked for our preferences on salt and vinegar etc, packed our supper up and said “have a nice evening”. Faultless, well done. We got back to,our accommodation and began to eat. The fish was lovely. We had to remove the greasy batter because the fish was literally “swimming” in it (excuse the pun). The chips were absolutely disgusting! You could taste that they had been cooked in over-used oil and had a foul taste. Needless to say for £11.60 we ate batter less fish with no chips and would not return or recommend Hollowgate Fisheries.

I live in Holmfirth and have regularly used this chippy, each time I visit I swear I will never use it again, the quality is okay but the service and organisation is (leaving COVID to one side) is abysmal, I repeatedly have to wait longer for my takeaway then it ultimately takes me to eat it.

Shocking service. When glamping nearby we ordered several meals and drinks to collect. When we arrived back at the campsite we discovered one fish and two drinks were missing from the bag. Used to be my favourite fish & chips, but during this last year the food and the service have become hugely disappointing. Wait times have become ridiculously long, even when there have been only one or two customers in front. I was tricked this evening into thinking I might get something to eat in a reasonable time - one customer had already ordered and there was one other customer in front of me. It took 35 minutes before I had my food. Ok Hollowgate Fisheries, you win. I have persevered during the last year out of loyalty, but this will be my last visit. I will miss you, but I can’t stand outside for such a long time with hardly any queue. I understand you have people ordering by ‘phone, but your speed of service has become glacial. In addition, the quality of your food has gone from good/excellent to poor/mediocre. There is no sense of urgency anymore, and a lack of care in the cooking.
BarnConversion . 2021-03-06

It’s not run in a professional manner and COVID safety procedures not very good. We ordered food for 6. Arrived to find a queue at the door. Next person in just took our order. Really , how can the names on the order not even be checked? If that is not being checked what else isn’t. Also the man who went in was not wearing a mask and he was in there for a good 15 minutes. When I queried this, I was told he was mask exempt. Well the masks are there for our protection not his, so he was breathing in the shop for over 15 minutes without a mask with all the food around. The procedure for mask exempt should be to bring the food out to him. It took us 40 minutes to finally get our order and the staff didn’t seem sorry at all, in fact they seemed positively happy at the situation. We won’t be going back because of questionable procedures + safety all around. If there’s these issues, what else that we haven’t seen? We can say that in line with other reviewers the quality of the fish and chips has gone downhill. Bland fish and greasy chips. We used to get fish an chips here every week before COVID - but no more. 4 less customers.

Its not easy as a proud Lancastrian to admit I have to go to Yorkshire for first class fish and chips. So today my wife and I set out for the Holmfirth in West Yorkshire to see what this well known little town had to offer by way of great chippy's.We asked the buskers who were performing in the town's centre for their recommendation. They advised us to go to Hollowgate Fisheries which we duly did.The shop was sticking to COV19 rules so we joined the orderly que [socially distance of course!] ordered 2 cod and chips and found a nearby bench were we could scoff our takeaway. The generous portion of white flaky cod was covered in a deep brown very crispy batter and was delicious. The chips were piping hot and very tasty. I think we paid just under £12 for our two meals but boy they were worth it! If eating fish and chips out of a tray in the open air is something you enjoy then I would strongly advise you to give Holloway a try , I'am confident you wont be disappointed.

We are regulars at this chip shop, but we’ll think twice before going again after tonight’s experience. My wife has short hair, and isn’t particularly ‘girly’ as such. Tonight we went to get a Friday night chippy, and she went in to make her order. We waited outside as per the new C19 rules, and waited for our name to be called. They called her name, and she went in. Her name is feminine so there was literally no excuse for the following upset. The staff behind the till then said “there HE is, oh I mean SHE” and then they all laughed. She was mortified and embarrassed as well as being upset. Absolutely disgusting behaviour to display to a customer. It was totally unnecessary and hurtful, and I’m a time when we should all be coming together, totally disgraceful. We shouldn’t leave feeling humiliated when buying fish and chips. I suggest the owners talk to the youngsters who were working, before they loose you more customers.

They do kids box meals and we got a kids sausage and chicken nugget meal, these came with a kids drink, little emoji toy and stickers which we weren’t expecting and the kids loved them. They also do a small cod and chips but we prefer haddock, decent portion size (small would be sufficient for the average appetite) and really good quality. Popped in for a sit-down meal. The food here used to be absolutely delicious but now only average, if that (I speak as a lifelong frequenter of fish and chip shops/cafes). Chips were dry and a bit cardboardy - obviously been hanging around for a while. Fish OK. Mushy peas a bit tasteless, a small quantity served in a small pot. Tiny amount of tea in pot - hardly enough for two small cups (a bit mean). Not terribly impressed overall and won't return. New owners who took over a few years ago must be behind the decline in standards. They've also cut the times the cafe is open. Come back the old proprietors - all is forgiven!

Wanted 3 fish. No other customers in shop. 2 fish were ready. I asked have you only 2 ready but was told by older lady that she could hear one frying suggesting it would be quick.! Two separate families followed me in both with 2 children. A man also came in after me. They were all served before me leaving me the only customer left. On asking how long fish take to fry I was told 4 mins. If this was the case my fish were give given to customers who came after me. When questioned the mature lady said I have a receipt here timed 4 mins ago. Indeed she did but it cannot have been mine! Good deceptive and clever attempt to fool me which it initially did. I was told I could ring my order in several times. I replied I had been coming in without ringing for over FIFTY YEARS! Obviously she thought I was a tourist. Shame on your attempted deception. I realise your only 'power' is to make some customers wait but that day you chose the wrong one. You left me to wait a minimum 15 mins for a 4 min fish and attempted to deceive me. Hence the terrible score.

Called in for lunch whilst in Holmfirth. Parking is a nightmare - you can't but park illegally. But got away with it. Woman serving was very friendly to all including myself. Food was above average. Quite busy due to some offer they had on - everybody had coupons from a newspaper. Now feel free to call this petty, but for me this cost them the excellent score. The guy in front of me ordered fish & chips twice, I ordered F+C once, the guy behind me ordered F+C twice, the lady behind him ordered F+C once. So she served the guy in front of me (2xF&C), then the guy behind me (2xF&C), then the lady behind him (1xF&C), before serving me (1xF&C). I'm a bugger for hating queue jumping. Now if it was just one person, I could call that a mistake. But serving 3 times what I ordered when I was first just annoyed the hell out of me.

Strangely a bit of salad on the plate. The cup of tea was OK but the teapot poured badly as did the milk jug. They cannot possibly be trying to please their customers. What a disappointment! I hope they are reading their reviews and plan to improve.......

I'm from Huddersfield but live on toothed side of the border. It's nigh on impossible to get proper fish and chips here. Hence we regularly pack the kids in the car and head to Holmfirth. We drive right past the big name chippy, it serves more generic fish and chips, West Yorkshire has its own style and looking at some of the other reviews it's obvious they're not everyone's bag. Whatever. I like them just like this, scrag end chips and well cooked fish in crunchy batter. The eat in service is 'quaint' but that's part of the appeal.

Not on my return list for fish & chips, overcooked fish with the tail end rock hard along with the batter and I left a third of the chips as they were scrag ends and more like crisps.Sorry this place is taking advantage of tourists, poor quality and overpriced.

I've only ever had take-a-ways from HG, not having eaten in perhaps it's better value? Personally, I've never been impressed with this establishment, having called in only with visitors who insist on it. I personally find it disappointing and - very expensive!

My husband called one teatime at the takeaway for fish, chips and mushy peas but they were an expensive waste of money! The food was cold and the fish had obviously been kept warm for ages in the 'heat' cupboard because it was grey and soggy! Most unappetising. We threw most of it away. Definitely won't be going there again!

A traditional small town fish & chips restaurant/takeaway.This is the place the famous trio visited after returning from 'making a splash in Wales'.If you know what to expect. You won't be disappointed. When I visit Holmfirth, I usually goto Sid's cafe and here.Fish and chips and coffee are fine. As are the prices. No complaints.

First nite in Holmfirth just grabbed some fish and chips for tea on way past to the digs but really surprised as we are in the middle of the country they really were some of the best fish and chips I've ever had me and the wife both had haddock and it was really nice fish also never seen fish cakes that big anywhere else I had to ask what they were I thought they were frying burgers in the bun

Walked down from Nora Batty's Cottage and got 2 pensioners' cod and chips - and onion rings. Great dinner - and more than we could finish. Our second time in 2 years, and definitely not our last.

Been a few times due to the location and always disappointed. The service is usually slow, sometimes very slow, it's expensive and I'm not sure what they do with the chips to make sure they stick together like they do, possibly under cooked or fat not hot enough? Used to be a nice chippy, best off avoided imo unless there's no alternative.

Centre of Holmfirth but very expensive. Portion size is on the small side as well. A fish butty from here costs more than fish, chips and curry from mother local shops.

Fast food. No way. Appalling service. After having waited 5 mins my order was taken and then I had to listen to the female chastising 'Richard ' to cook the chips and he was obviously wanting to wind down as there was only 10 mins before they shut. But you still have customers. My mistake of timing. Anyway what resulted was a debacle of service, listening to the staff arguing whilst all I wanted was fish and chips. After 15 minutes I asked for my money back which happened but no apology. Hey owners get a grip cos you lost another customer.Travel up the road to compos Great fish and chips and a much better experience.

I've only had the chips from here. They're nice enough, nothing fantastic, but OK, a reasonable size portion at a fair price. Friendly service.

The problem here is that one visit you get fabulous fish and chips and the next visit dreadful fish and chips. I don't think it's just down to supply of fish even though when the fish is bad it is really bad I think it's also who is frying as sometimes the chips are delicious golden brown and other times they are pale and undercooked.I don't think we will go again as the difference between good and bad is too great, the only saving grace is that it is open when many local chip shops are closed but when it's bad they literally have to go in the bin, such a shame as ideal location and good opening times.

Not greasey full of flavour large portions served in a quaint little cafe in the side of the take away shop. Served quickly with a good selection of drinks. A.ways busy as it's very popular with the locals. Definitely worth trying if you ever visit holmfirth as I highly recommend

Just purchased fishcake and chips for lunch, I ordered 'fishcake and chips' which should have been £3.00, but was only given £1.70 change, it seems I was charged for a large portion automatically even though it was not by any means large. Chips were overcooked and I suspect old, few chips and far too many scrappy hard bits. The fishcake was definitely old cooked - the batter was tough and leathery, sadly the inside wasn't, there was gunky uncooked batter in the fishcake and the sliced potato was hard and uncooked to the bite. Still, the amount of grease in the meal meant it kept my fire burning well for ages.... AVOID THIS PLACE

Really looking forward to our monthly treat, so we thought we'd go local, all the tourists can't be wrong? The fish was over cooked and totally tasteless, the chips were greasy and dripping, there were no peas so we opted for their curry sauce, that was totally disgusting, it should have been sold as curry paste, I could have cut it into slices! I definitely won't be returning and would strongly recommend an alternative..
