Great village pub in a lovely setting. The menu was really good and you didn’t have to have a roast if you didn’t want to as there were other choices available . You could have roast beef , roast pork or roast turkey or a combination of all 3. Served with a Yorkshire , roast potatoes and a nice selection of vegetables . Plenty of gravy which is great as I hate having to ask for more. Lovely friendly staff and great service. Looking forward to my next visit .

Fantastic food and the staff are very friendly and welcoming. Although the building is ‘historic’ the restaurant is bright and comfortable, there is also a snug where you can eat which is smaller and more cozy. The bar area is bright with an eclectic style of seating.

A group of us stayed here in 4 rooms for 2 nights as we were all attending a wedding at Swynford Manor about 3 miles from this establishment. From the staff to a meal the night before the wedding, bar, breakfast, accommodation, atmosphere, parking the list goes on. Absolutely fantastic and a credit to them all. Will definitely stay there again when visiting Cambridge or Newmarket without hesitation.

This restaurant is ideally located for a dinner after Newmarket races. We came here as a family group of 11 after a day at the races for my dad’s 80th. Sid was extremely helpful in the run up to the day taking our pre-orders and providing reassurance around various allergies and other dietary requirements in our group. A really lovely pub, lots of good food options, all the food was cooked well and really tasty. All the food came out together and no one was waiting and service was really good - very attentive, helpful. We all had such a lovely evening - everyone in the group commented on the venue choice being excellent - I’d highly recommend this place for a nice meal out.

I chose The Hole in the Wall to celebrate my mother’s 80th birthday (who lives in Great Shelford) with a family lunch for six on 26th April. I had read the plethora of positive reviews, and as one of the party has Parkinson’s, accessible parking was a priority. I messaged the restaurant to check (before I booked) and Sid (Sidharth Getty) replied quickly and said it would not be a problem, so I booked. I then emailed Sid a few times about various other things, and honestly, he is the kindest and most courteous, helpful guy ever! On arrival at the restaurant, Sid greeted us and showed us to our table, and for the next couple of hours, we had the most delicious food, and the best service! It’s a very intimate dining space and we were lucky that 20 mins after our arrival, the other diners left, and so we had the dining room to ourselves which was great! The food all came out at the same time (a rarity) and was perfectly cooked and presented, and we all agreed, absolutely delicious! Once we had declined desert due to being nicely full, the front of house team, plus the chef, came out with an Eton mess type desert cake with a candle in it, to present to my mum, with Happy Birthday playing on a sound system - my mum was delighted and ate the lot, despite being full and not a desert person! The perfect end to the perfect meal. I would not hesitate to recommend this place, and I thank Sidharth once again for his impeccable service. We will return!

Sunday lunch here today. Was busy but our orders were taken promptly, and the service was good. Roast dinner choice of three meats or all three if you want that option. Nice touch that all came with Yorkshire and cauliflower cheese. Only two roast potatoes is something I never understand, as this is the best part of a roast, but the option of extra as a side is available. It was nice and always a treat to have a roast cooked for you and the puddings were twists on classics. Not super outstanding in my view, but I've been before and will no doubt go again!

We had been meaning to try The Hole in The Wall for a long time as heard good things about it. We then wanted a roast on Sunday so tried to see if there was availabilty and they managed to squeeze us in which was appreciated. We turned up to find a warm and friendly waiter at the door. He showed us to our table and was very pleasant, we quickly chose on some starters and mains (pushing the boat out knowing we would almost definitely have puddings). The starter arrived and all I can say is wow, was very tasty and presented in a very elegant way. Then the mains arrived and I decided on the three meat roast, well let’s just say the meat sweats started but managed to eat it all and was amazing, gravy was definitely up there with some of the best. We then managed to squeeze in a pudding which finished off the meal perfectly. Our daughter even got her name written on her plate which was a lovely touch. Couldn’t fault the service by Carrick and the chef Ulhas cooked up a feast. 5 starts from us! We will be sure to be back very soon!

We went for Sunday lunch and the place was buzzing, which was a testament to the high quality of food and good service. The food was absolutely amazing. Two of us had the roast dinner with trio of meats and every single mouthful of all of the meats was delicious: thinly carved, juicy and succulent. A great selection of sides with the meat, plenty of rich tasty gravy and when my husband tasted the roast potato he said "I feel like an angel is massaging my tongue". The third member of our party had the scampi and chips and this was reported to be very good as well. We also had desserts which were extremely tasty. The service was good and surprisingly quick given how busy the restaurant was. Some of the staff were very friendly, others more brisk and business-like, but nobody was ineffective. Overall the cost was £100 for three people (drinks, mains and desserts) which given the quality of the food felt very reasonable. The only minor downside was that the car park was very full and busy, hard to get in and out of. If you're there at a busy time and travelling by car, it might be better to park a little further away and walk back (not directly on the junction opposite though as some patrons had evidently done).

Quirky historic building pleasant interiors and either restaurant or snug to eat in. Good menu choice supplemented by specials and themed evenings, we were there on steak night and the fillet was excellent cooked just right. Quality of all the food was excellent, well presented and high quality. Good choice of wines and cocktails which were reasonably priced. We went out of our way to visit this place. Couldn't have been a worse start to a weekend away. Quirky old building, traditional pub furniture, traditional menu, traditional punb service, traditional careless housekeeping, poor quality food. First thing noticed was that when we tried to lift our glasses we found they were stuck to the table! As was everything else....but it did make us question what the rest of the experience would be like. We were happy to be going away for a long weekend and didn't want to start off with a complaint so let it go by just being careful not to touch the table top! Starter was a plate of loaded nachos - not much can go wrong there we thought: shop bought nachos were ok but miserly toppings and a laughably tiny portion of shop bought creamed avocado, and even more laughable was the tomato salsa a.k.a. ketchup!! We though things surely couldn't get worse. They did. My order of 'Golden Tail Scampi' turned out to be a cylinder of some kind of white pap coated in breadcrumbs. No taste and I would be amazed if it had even seen a scampi in its vicinity...I couldn't eat them so left them - I didn't intend to eat any potatoes (we had a Michelin star restaurant tasting menu booked for the evening so didn't want to spoil it) but as I was a bit peckish I ate a couple - best bit of the meal. My husband thought he couldn't go wrong with a burger so ordered bacon & cheese burger. Massively disappointing terribly processed and overcooked (as meat processed to that extent needs to be) bacon flabby left most of it. Very good sweet potato fries. Chef did come out to find out what was wrong - I broke open one of the scampi to show him the pap: he said he must have a word with his fishmonger! We didn't even bother to mention about the burger. They knocked the scampi off the bill. We cannot recommend you visit this place, but we can recommend that you don't.

After a day at Newmarket races, we had booked rooms for the night at Hole in the Wall. On arrival we had a little wait at the empty bar for any service but were met by the lovely manager Sid, who showed us to our rooms. We had booked two rooms one above the bar and one outside. The one above the bar was used by my son and his wife. My son is over 6ft but even so the door of the room was so small he really had to crouch to get in and his head almost touching the ceiling of the room and had absolutely no chance of being able to use the shower. They told us the following morning they'd had no sleep due to noise from the bar and what sounded like the thud of darts hitting the board. Our room on the other hand was decent to stay in, however the noise of people going in and out the bar and restaurant was awful and as people.left in cars, the road passed directly by the room and woke us several times. So as far as accommodation goes, not somewhere we would go to again. Onto the food and absolutely no complaints in terms of the quality. Its a gastropub and prices were a bit more than you'd pay in a normal pub and portion sizes not so big but they were beautifully cooked, presented superbly and tasted fantastic. Again the manager was attentive and the young girl in the bar was lovely but the two servers in the restaurant, despite being professional in serving food. made the night a little awkward with their command of English, we found ourselves having to explain what we wanted when ordering drinks and dessert, and then having to repeat it again when another of the two had to come back and try to figure out what we wanted even though it was only 2 simple desserts and a glass of Baileys. Finally when leaving the following morning there was no service to hand in keys even though we knocked on the door of the kitchen where people were working and clearly others had had the same issue as other keys were just left lying around at the bar. If you are after good food then, yes, give it a try, if you want a peaceful nights sleep, i'd consider somewhere else. Its the simple things that make places like this appealing to stay and we all felt that the lack of a decent night's sleep and comfort let it down

Lovely staff, good steaks & very nice deserts. However, cod was dry, overcooked & lukewarm. Since when does a lamb shank cost £29.

Mushy roast potatoes, small amount of vegetables, lack of cheese on the side order of cauliflower cheese. Apple crumble served in a ramekin with what looked like crushed biscuits spread on top, accompanied by an extremely small jug of custard.

Well you talk about a sleepy village pub with a bit of a reputation as a yo yo pub....Not any more...! Just had one of the best Italian meals outside Italy...lie not! Simple ingredients,no frills no arty food this is simple wholesome Italian food at its best, and it's a plateful! Fabulous pasta and chicken dish matched with a cracking red wine at a very reasonable price. Great atmosphere, easy going friendly staff. I was back in the Italian countryside where I spent a lot of time near Torino and Modena when I ate here tonight...that good. Worth a visit trust me. And....you must try the Lemonchello milk drink.. It's a family secret....and ...I have only had one this good in Modena. This a little bit of good old fashioned Italian cuisine and hospitality in the Cambridgeshire Countryside and its bloody fabulous. Return we shall...

We brought our two children on a whim one early lunchtime on a Saturday in December, knowing that it was very much a gamble whether we would get a table without a reservation. As we arrived just before 12.30 they kindly fit us in before a 1.30 reservation. This gave us plenty of time to enjoy the excellent fish (accompanied by only ok tartare, curry sauce and crushed peas) and chips and burger. The children's pasta and pesto were less of a hit, appeared unseasoned, though this may be a bonus to very health conscious parents who don't give their children salt. I bet the decorations with miniature Christmas trees throughout looks even nicer at night. All in all a pleasant experience.
