Booked a table for a Sunday lunch while in the area and have to say it was the worst meal we have had for a long time. The Sunday lunch was abysmal. The meat was tough, the vegetables were rock hard, not "Al dente".Potato's tasted like last weeks. There was cross contamination whilst serving meat,ie chef using same knife and serving utensils between pork and beef. The pan seared chicken supreme was bland, very little chicken,no flavour at all. The children's meatballs was inedible. The place itself was lovely and could be a super venue.such a disappointment and needs a major shake up.

Wow- please don't waste your time if you are vegetarian- the available selection is slim. Out of lack of choice I chose the cauliflower 'steak' and paid £14 for half a cauliflower head, some bots if potato in a spicy tomato sauce and a few green beans. Once my husband had finished his mixed grill we then drove to the services so I could have something to eat!!!!!!!!!!!!! Terrible

Every so often my best friend and I meet up for a catch up and a meal. The venue is relatively comfortable and conducive to a heightened feel good factor. The service is friendly but slow. It does not appear to matter the number of customers in house. I ordered the Venison Bolognese over spaghetti with a side of onion rings. The sauce had absolutely nothing in the way of flavor nevermind any Italian essence. It was as though they just fried off the minced meat and tipped in a tin of chopped tomatoes. As for the onion rings, they were way over cooked. But as a good lad from my days at my mom's dinner table, I cleared my plate just the same.

On entry, the Hogs Head made such a good impression. The pub looks recently done up and creates a cosy atmosphere despite being large. The menu was vast with a wide range of options. The chips were really yummy and all of the group were happy with their choices - pulled pork bun, scampi, burger and garlic pasta. Plenty of room for pushchairs and high chairs too.

We did not stay in the hotel, but came for an evening meal. We had only booked (by email) a couple of hours before. When we went to the bar we were told there was an hour’s wait for food. Ok, it’s a fair wait but we thought we’d have a drink. We asked the waitress after an hour and she advised it would be another half hour and we should have been told this when we ordered. Completely ridiculous! If we’d been told this at the outset then we would have gone elsewhere. As it was the waitresses spent all evening rushing round apologising due to the failure of the bar staff to manage customers’ expectations. The crazy thing was that they even accepted our booking knowing that they had staffing issues in the kitchen. We felt sorry for the residents of the hotel whose wait was probably exacerbated by us being there. Food was passable. However the coleslaw was inedible.

Very busy place we called in for something to eat after going somewhere else that was closed. We ended up having carvery we both picked pork which melted in your mouth had 2 good slices on plate, stuffing was to die for, vegetables were lovely and I must say the Yorkshire puds were the best I’ve had for along time when going for a carvery in a restaurant. Staff were very helpful and pleasant. Looking forward and hoping it will be as pleasant next time we go

Lunch with grandson (7yrs). The meat in his meal was heavily salted and he was unable to eat most of it. A child's meal should NEVER be salted in advance. We raised this with wait staff who offered a disinterested 'sorry'. Chips in both his and husbands meal were already salted and overcooked. My meal was under seasoned and fish was a bit overcooked. A lot of money for very underwhelming food.

A Monday night and the setting inside is as lovely as always. Shame the food is massively overpriced for what you get served. The menu has been cut back and should really focus on simplifying their dishes and nailing them, whilst lowering the price. £17 for pie and chips? The pie was really average and came with the bottom having fallen out of it, so I actually got steak and chorizo casserole with an empty pie shell on top. We’ve come for years but it’ll be a while before we’re back. Simply not good enough or worth the money.

This was probably the worst meal out I have had for a long time. Kids had burger and chips and chicken, the chips were extremely over cooked and salty. Found a peice of bone in my daughters burger. I had the hogs head burger and it was basically the same as the children's burger and chips in every way but double the cost. Very disappointed and just an overall lack of effort from hogs head in general, I won't be back here and I live locally. Much better places available.

Really enjoyed our stay in May 2023. Great room, very clean, very comfortable bed! It is very rare we sleep well in a bed and we did in this one, it had extra pillows too which was great. Our room had everything we needed (iron, hairdryer, shower gel, shampoo, kettle, tea and coffee). Staff were wonderful and very friendly. Great location, not a far drive to the centre of Alnwick too. The Hogshead Inn restaurant serves lovely breakfasts, recommend to go early before all the hot food are gone. Meals at the place is nice, a lot of it are seafood based and not a lot vegetarian options (non fish). There's plenty of nice places to eat and drink in and around Alnwick. Highly recommend a visit to Barter Books (old train station) if you like your books. It is a wee gem of a place to visit (opens early till around 7pm) It is usually quieter off peak times. If you love castles then may we recommend.... Alnwick Castle and their beautiful gardens. Chillingham Castle (very unique) Holy Island (be aware of the times of the coastal tides so you don't get stranded on the island) Beamish the living museum (about an hour's drive away to Durham), is absolutely fantastic! Get the annual ticket for a few pounds more and spend all day or two there as there's so much to see and do. Definitely will come back to The Hogshead Inn again in future.

Husband said he would have rather gone to McDonald's over the road. So disappointing. Looks so lovely from the outside and indeed it is lovely on the inside, relaxing and comfortable. Unfortunately the service and food we received let it down. No issue with the friendless of the staff but our food took absolutely AGES to arrive. We asked for our daughter's main to be served at the same time as our starter. Out comes my daughter's main, with my Husband's main. We hadn't even had his starter yet! They took my husband's main away. After more waiting (and no adult mains) we were asked if we wanted dessert! 🙈 When our mains arrived they were so plain and dry. (The venison burger). The cost that we were charged on hindsight, and eating at other places this week, makes me think we were also overcharged. My fault for not checking the receipt. Such a shame as cosmetically it is great. Hopefully it was just a "bad day" for the young serving staff/kitchen.

We called in for a couple of drinks to cool down outside on a sunny summers day to have the three young girls behind the bar seeming sick of their lives. The one girl with glasses that served me my drink was friendly, the others were horrible. There was a clear atmosphere as soon as we entered. When my friend ordered a large glass of Pinot Grigio she was met with a roll of the eyes and a sigh. She was extremely rude to not only our party but every costumer. Not a word was said. No please thank you or anything. When another gentlemen tried to order he was met with her just nodding her head at him it even looking up from making drinks. I’ve never known anything like it. Young waitresses with a attitude like this give us a bad rep in general and then we all get tarred with the same brush. In these challenging times, staff are lucky to be in a job and should be grateful for the position they’re in.

Our first visit, sadly it’ll be our last. Came in for lunch around 1:30. It wasn’t very busy, lots of spare tables (at least 2 thirds of the place was empty). Went to order and as there was nothing at all on the menu one of us liked, we asked if we could swap the beef burger for a chicken breast. The server at the till went to ask the ‘chef’ and returned with the reply “the chef said no, it’s too hard for him to do, he’d have to debone and skin a chicken portion”. We opted for a bowl of chips. Also ordered the ‘hand carved ham with parsley sauce, a poached duck egg and chips’, and scampi and chips for the little one. It took nearly 50 minutes to arrive, bearing in mind how quiet the place was, we hoped it meant the food was being carefully prepared and cooked. We were wrong. The ham looked as though it had been carved 2 days ago, it was tough, tasteless and frankly awful. The parsley sauce hadn’t been heated properly, it was lukewarm, congealed, jelly-like, also tasteless and had to be scraped off. The chips appeared to have been deep fried in very old oil, they tasted horrible. The poached egg had been done well but the taste was ruined because of the nasty ‘sauce’. Thank goodness the scampi was good for the little one, but how can you ruin cooking frozen scampi. It could’ve been a new place for us to visit regularly, but we were so disappointed.

The cauliflower cheese was one of the best we have tasted and the Mash potato, roast potatoes, carrot and swede mash ,roast carrots and cabbage were all very well cooked. The Yorkshire puddings were large and well risen! The gravy was very meaty and there was plenty of horseradish, Apple sauce and cranberry sauce. And other cards don't work.I wanted to leave the telly and light on for her comfort whilst I took that break. So I left my card in. May be when some one stays with a pooch. We booked a table during the ‘eat our’ offer and met with family for lunch. We arrived at 1245 for a 1300 booking and covid regulations were explained, it was to be table service. After waiting 15 minutes and still not had our order taken, a family had arrived after us, had their orders taken and had their drinks, we had to get the servers attention to take our order. 45 minutes after arriving we still hadn’t even had our drinks, the table who arrived after us had almost finished their meals. Again we had to ask where our drinks were, a while passed again before drinks and the meals arrived. We were advised the drinks didn’t need to be paid for. I expect the meals had been left on a hot plate as they were lukewarm. Finally, after finishing no one cleared our plates so we had to go up to the bar and ask for a bill. To avoid customers walking around the bar, table service is essential but only if the service works, on this occasion it didn’t. We were in Alnwick for a week and found far better places, we won’t return

The first breakfast followed in the same vein. Sadly things went downhill from there. Evening meal second night we waited over 20’ for drinks, the food was slow and we struggled to get attention for the bill. Breakfast the next day was shocking. They were short staffed but still taking walk in breakfasts as well as residents. We were seated quickly but then waited for tea. The poor waitresses were run off their feet. After 50’ we asked how much longer we could expect to wait. We were told they had lost our order. We needed to be away so had to miss breakfast. The team did apologise and adjust our bill but I think the manager needed to be on the floor given the issues. Several other parties left without food. Booked The Hog's Head for a family party of six during a recent holiday. Initial thoughts were positive - nice interior with discreet screens and all staff wearing face masks. Were seated at two separate tables of four and two as we were told they couldn't move tables. We didn't mind as the adults sat at one and the teens at another, (but some parties may gave found this awkward). Ordered our food at 19:00 and was served it at 20:10, which was an awfully long wait. Staff did apologise at 20:05 but didn't give a reason for the delay. Anyway, these things happen so we didnt fuss and just got on with things. The main courses were all reasonably good, with no complaints, however, the desserts spoiled things somewhat. Two ordered the cheesecake of the day and both were quite different - one was very strawberry in flavour whilst the other tasted only of cream. Two sticky toffee puddings were ordered and unfortunately mine came without the toffee sauce so it was just a dry, chewy cake underneath the custard! The final negative was discovering a hair on one of the portions of cheesecake, which is bad enough in 'normal' times but during a pandemic when hygiene is supposed to be top if the agenda??? Slightly put off after this so the staff deducted the dessert from the bill and we went on our way. Suffice to say, we wouldn't be rushing back but the restaurant did have potential to be much better. Hopefully things might improve as business starts building again, but sadly can't leave a higher review than two stars on this occasion.

Very happy that they were able to accommodate us with our dogs. However, the burgers which should have been succulent thick Angus burgers were horribly over cooked, blackened and tasteless. We should have said but were too 'English' to make a fuss.

Reserved a table for 10 people last night for a surprise 40th. When arrived they had give our table to another party which then ment our group was then split into two tables. Which is not acceptable. Orders drinks and forgot some and had to be reminded on this also a long wait for food which was over an hour for our mains and forgot some of the order and had to be reminded again. Then unable to provide a bill for the meals. Whole experience wasn’t very good and spoilt the surprise 40th.

Just returned from a two night stay. Firstly, we were impressed with all Covid instructions in place. Plenty of hand sanitizers around, good social distancing in place and perspex screens around tables in restaurant. Rooms spacious, but there was no bath slip mat for the bath, no grab handles if you took a shower, so incredibly slippy and you had to be extremely careful. Walk in showers really should be fitted.Food was average, pub grub, quite expensive too and drinks were pricey. Staff very pleasant and welcoming.Bar/food service in the outside area was poor, staff were taking an order and taking it through to the bar, whereas they could have cleared tables on route. Not the hotels fault in any way, but we did notice quite a few people, (not guests) who were drinking and then getting in their cars, and last night, worryingly, a man who had clearly had a few, then went to his car to drive, had we been quicker, we would have taken his registration and called the Police.

shocked at the price: Food ok comparable with a wetherspoons but three times the price. They served a cesar salad with no croutons, no parmesan and no dressing on the same salad they were using for a garnish, we ordered a coffee which did not arrive. The waiting staff were delightful and very friendly the place was clean and they did not charge for the salad and the missing coffee. But it's hard to justify 3.50 for draft pepsi max when your glass is three quarters ice and you know it costs 5p a shot. As only 3 out of the 4 of us ate, a chicken burger, beef burger and scampi, all with chips and chocolate cake dessert; i think £32.00 a head is extortionate. it was bad enough with the £40 government voucher. i would have been really upset facing a £96 pound bill rather than the £56.00 paid. I advise caution.

Disappointing really as been regularly before and was Always good. Some staff had masks on chin or none worn. Won’t be back till they sort it out.

Today was mostly about a transport detail to Edinburgh, (daughters boyfriend), followed by lunch at the Hogs Head Inn, Alnwick. We just decided on the beef stottie and chips, and our girl tried the chicken burger with blue cheese sauce. Stotties were lovely - came with chips and salad. Burger was also good, but the cheese sauce wasn’t the best - watery and lacking in taste. I’m not sure if the main door had been left open, but the restaurant was very cold inside! This was made up for however, by the very warm and friendly servers. The place is totally CoVID compliant - tables are actually screened off from one another, sanitizers everywhere, wrapped cutlery, waiters in masks, disposable condiments - they couldn’t have put more thought into it if they tried...deffo worth a run out....but put the heating on next time!

Lovely welcome, tidy comfortable rooms and corridors , bar area smart. Casual dress only needed. Reminded me of a Wetherspoons. Food ok. For the price you are paying for overnight inc breakfast and evening meal I can’t complain. Would I come here for a meal if not staying? No. The food is Luke warm. Not served on warm plates. Staff zooming around even though it wasn’t overly busy. Pass you leaving a draft. Buffet Breakfast is not covered up so the food goes cold quickly. Evening meal looks ,tastes like it’s from a microwave and not heated up properly. Maybe that is something management could check up on in the kitchen. But as I say. For the price it’s worth it. There is a bus five min walk away to take you into local Alnwick , return fare just under a £5 each. There are some lovely pubs there and eating places.

Came here on a Sunday lunchtime and had the carvery, it tasted good but the pork was slightly underdone, a bit red, veg and things were fine tho, the chocolate orange cheesecake tasted lovely. Thought we’d wait an hour to be seated but were not! BUT!!! They now allow dogs, it’s a pub serving food!! What happens if someone wants to come here who’s allergic to dogs and doesn’t realise they are allowed in or has a reaction and ends up unwell, what will you do then??!!

We needed a one night stay in the vicinity of Alnwick and this was a good choice. Comfortable rooms, albeit with a faulty remote control in one of our rooms, very good service in the bar/restaurant and a good breakfast. Yes, there can be a bit of traffic noise, but it was not overwhelming and you are where you are, within striking distance of an onward journey on the A1.

This was the third time that we have stayed here but the first time with our puppy Morgan who is 14 weeks old, our previous dogs (whom we lost last October aged 14 & 15) where never dog/people friendly so we never brought them here, we are taking the opportunity to get Morgan used to being in public places as so much has changed in 15 yrs, so much more dog friendly these day.We had the two night deal of Bed, Breakfast and evening meal. We sat at table 2 for every meal so Morgan was out the way but could see too. The food was excellent as where the staff, we were in room 7 which was quite a way from the main entrance for taking Morgan out to toilet, she uses a litter tray so this was not a problem in the night as we want her use it at night (we don't get out of bed at home in the night to let her out for this reason to use it when we are away) but during the day we would take her out. We will most certainly be bring her back here with us again

We thoroughly recommend The Hogs Head . I was a little sceptical when I saw it was situated out of town and a new style establishment but the rooms were a generous size and spotless, and the staff some of the friendliest we have come across. The food, from the buffet breakfast included in our deal to the evening meals we opted for in the bar /restaurant was very good with a selection of more local as well as the usual options . The hotel was nicely situated for our drives to the coast as well as into Alnwick. We will certainly return if back in the area.

5 star experience. Called in after a trip to the Alnwick Gardens for our early evening meal with 4 children in tow. A lot of choice on the menu for adults and children. Outstanding food, great, service and pleasant and friendly staff. We will definitely call back, even if it is a 2 hour round journey! Mains were lovely, a good size and the chips were amazing. The only thing I could say was that the children’s brownies were HUGE- but the adults enjoyed a second pudding!!!!

Been here many many times but I have to say I think the food has gone down hill in the last year. The last 3 times we’ve been we’ve noticed a decline in the food. Today, the burger was over cooked and tough, the chips tasted and smelled of old chip fat, and the small sized fish was a big one cut in half, the people on the table next to us had the other half. Sadly, I think we’ll be giving this place a miss for quite a while.

The breakfast is very nice. Decent quality of ingredients and well presented. Given that it costs £9 which is ok, it should really include tea / coffee. Having to add on the cost of these makes it (in my opinion) overpriced for what it is.

Great setting, shame about the food. We ordered two steak and ale pies which were filled with over cooked rubber gristle a hack saw would struggle with, and cold chips with barley warm gravy and peas. The margarita pizza our son ordered was black around the edges, with a pre frozen base. Be aware their are views of a nearby McDonald’s out of the windows of this restaurant which may leave you feeling you made a bad choice. Hope this was a one off.

I had the peri peri chicken flat bread and it was huge very tasty too. Would go again.

Overpriced, particularly the wine. The food is average to poor, especially the veg curry which tasted of nothing and the ‘passion fruit’ cheese cake which was bland apart from the syrupy strawberry sauce. The place needs a better chef. The whole place lacks atmosphere but this is true of many chain pubs. A nice playground for kids is it’s saving grace but I would spend my money elsewhere in future.

Easy to find right next to the main road (though our Sat Nav took us back on to the main road instead of into the Service Area, where the hotel is located). Big car park - and dog friendly, it seems. Room clean and very spacious, though surprised to find only a shower - no bath. Did not have a full meal, just a couple of delicious desserts. Handy for Alnwick Castle - and not too far from Cragside, where we were headed. Staff - for both check in and check out were very friendly and efficient.

A 50-room hotel on the A1 roundabout but better nicer than it sounds and very little noise from the dual carriageway. Big room with the TV, WiFi but a small bathroom with only a shower. My only complaint, as with all hotels, is that the room lighting is designed for ambience (i.e. dim!) rather than to enable you to work, read or even see what you’re doing. Service in the restaurant very efficient and food pretty good.

The cafe prices are ludicrous. £3.45 for a toasted tea cake with barely any fruit in it is ridiculous as is a fiver for two cups of tea and £9 for a cooked breakfast!! The staff are not the most pleasant either. Sadly the shop and garden centre prices are way off the scale too compared to most other garden centres. Definitely would not recommend or revisit.

Nice little hotel bar right on the Main Street of Alnwick I had drink several times during our stay in Alnwick. Margaret had the chilli which she said was nice. I wasn’t hungry so had the potato skins which came with a barbecue sauce and garlic mayo, which were ok but out of a bottle.

Popped in for lunch on a day over to Lindisfarne. Despite advertising that they cater for gluten free, a disappointing menu. When I asked at the bar if they do anything gluten free, the barman said that anything gluten free will have GF after it on menu, but they can do any sandwich with gluten free bread. There were no meals suitable on menu, so I went back to bar and asked if their spread was dairy free. Barmaid gives a big sigh and goes to check. Comes back to say yes it is, what do you want- like it was a big inconvenience for her. It’s not my husbands fault that he has allergies. Such attitude makes me wonder how anyone goes back here. Sarnie was ok but they didnt seem to do it separate to normal food as hubby found a bit of grated cheese attached to his bread. If he hadn’t spotted it, he would have been I’ll. overpriced too as the bread was just normal sliced bread. WONT BE GOING BACK!
