Hobgoblin in Brighton and Hove

Was quiet when we visited, but staff were friendly and the garden is something else. Will come again when the weather is better

Not a great pub. Garden ok, but generally charmless.

bathrooms were absolutely vile, and when i left the stall i was confronted by a bouncer demanding to search me because he “heard me sniff”. crazy claim to make considering the sheer volume of the music in there. i was then searched in the bathroom in front of everyone, and when the bouncer ultimately didn’t find anything (shocker!) he demanded to go through my wallet and managed to break it in the process. i pointed this out to him and he shrugged and told me to leave the bathroom. absolutely ridiculous. on top of all that, general customer service was poor and i was overcharged for my drink (board above the bar said £7.15, i was charged £9.15).

Reasonable place for an afternoon beer. £5 for a Star lager and £8 for a wine served in a plastic glass.

Does not serve cask ale. Not a pub.

I was unable to locate a drink menu on their website or in the pub itself. Additionally, the pub was quite bustling, seemingly overloaded. However, if you are a student, you'll probably like this place. The large tables in the garden are also a plus if you're planning to visit with a large group.

Lovely place, great interior and exterior, long que for drinks but the bar staff are great and friendly. Huge outside area, well lit and colourful with a good atmosphere and buzz.

Love the place, been there 4 years, never lose that Touch.

£9.20 for two lemonades. I miss the student days when could get a beer for less than a lemonade. Alas, will probably never come back :(

This pub doesn't have WiFi for its customers for a start. The staff were lovely can't really fault them at all to be fair but the toilets were absolutely horrendous and stank to high heaven and I disliked the decor of the pub. Dingy and unloved were my lasting impressions of the pub. If you've come with a laptop, I hope you can tether

wanted to come to this pub as i had heard great things, yet was left feeling disappointed, confused and least to say vulnerable when the door staff wouldn’t let me in when all i wanted was a casual monday evening pint. would not come back to this place if i was paid.

We always have a Bloody Mary as an important part of every holiday we take. It was warm, we were slightly lost and Hobgoblin was there! It seemed like the opportunity. Jake, our bartender, assured us that he made great Bloody Mary's - we have heard this one before and have been left disspapointed at some quite well heeled establishments across the UK. Were we wrong to doubt! Easily one of the best Bloody Marys we have ever had from across the UK and internationally. Jake should be in competitions for his Bloody Mary! Hobgoblin had a great back garden area where the drinks could be enjoyed in the sun (or not! Shade was also provided). Really friendly staff. We will be talking about those Bloody Marys for years to come.

Pub has a great outside seating area which has been lively every time I've been. There are large tables which can seat a fair few people and there are some smaller booths too. Toilets and the inside is a bit grotty but it's worth it for the outside area. Beer selection is adequate too.

Staff were just very rude including one of the bouncers, felt like they just didn’t want to be there and this was apparent by how they spoke to customers.

Easy to find, a beautiful beer garden, great camaraderie, price for food and drink is reasonable. Only thing to pick on is the entrance to the beer garden the surface water on the floor seemed really filthy, may need a bit of clean

Lovely pub, lovely outdoor area, great atmosphere and good drink selection. Some drinks are a little pricey for what they are, but staff are friendly enough and the area is very conveniently in the middle of town - perfect spot for a bevvie after a day's shopping around London Road

A double dissarano with a mixer was advertised for around £6 and when I went to the till I was charged £9.50! I asked if I could take it back realising I had been falsely advertised to, but the lady at the bar was very rude & unhelpful and made me pay the near tenner for one drink! Bad customer service and false advertising, I wouldn’t go back.

Gotten rid of all the cool deal and but that made it unique and interesting, basically doing the same as evey other mediocre bar in Brighton now except from one or two student deals

50% of the drink is the straw and the straw is disintegrating as I sip

Best beer Garden in Brighton!! - The Hobgoblin is a staple of Brighton life. It's a fantastic pub that's been around for so many years it feels like it's a part of Brighton's heritage. The Beer Garden at the back of the pub is exceptional, extremely Large, fully covered (for those raining drinking sessions) and, in my humble opinion, very well laid out. The staff are always friendly and professional and the pub always partakes in festivities and seasonal events. Drinks prices are average and they often have live music. It's a cornerstone of pub culture and I cannot fault them on anything. Their food is awesome too. well-priced and good quality. If you are visiting Brighton, make time to have a pint at the Hobgoblin. You won't be dissapointed :)

Maddie and Ben on the cheespot were a great pair to speak to they walked me through the menu and were very friendly and professional one of the best places ive been to in brighton this weekend, thank you so much!

Really disappointed. They were happy to take our money and talk to us when it suited them but dismissed us without any provocation when they felt that they were being dismissed and brought up fabricated claims of racism when it suited them.

We came on a Monday night, great staff and reasonably priced drinks! Really enjoyed the new food offering in the garden by Chee’spot, super tasty and well priced!

It was a monday 27.09.2021 Quite Early evening. Very sad day for me and my best friend as we were just coming back from funeral of our great co-worker. Weather was absolutelly horrible.Rain had no mercy that day and we get absolutely soaked to the skin. We needed to hide somewhere. Our steps went to Kogi restaurant next door to Hobgoblin , but unfortunately they were fully booked… Lovely waiter decided to give us a table, but we had to wait 20min for it . My friend suggested that we could spend this time at Hobgoblin and avoid further showers. What happened next was something terrible and shouldn't have ever happened anywhere. Doorman blocked the door for us and instead of greeting us, he began to interrogate us. He first asked my friend without any further due how much did he drink today. My friend say he had a glass of wine.He then asked me the same question. I asked him why is he asking me, so he informed me that I look very tired. Really ?? I will just stop here for a second and provide you with a few more details. Both of us are not teenagers. I am 40 years old and my friend in his early 50’s .We were both wearing suits and none of us were drunk .Will say more - my friend had in fact only a small glass of wine and I am not drinking anything at all since over 6 years! I felt really insulted , but it wasn’t over just yet! When I reply that I didn’t drink anything man goes step further and without any words of explonation order us to show the contents of our backpacks. If not of my friend, bad weather and other sad circumstances I would never allow this to happen, but I decided to just do whatever I was asked for not to stay outside the bar in the rain. Man not only looked into our bags, but also start touching them inside and outside .Any covid regulations at all ?? Eventually we were good to come in to practically empty bar … I did not order anything feeling extremely disrespected and we left shortly after my friend finished his glass of wine to have fantastic diner in restaurant next door . It's been a few days since this dreadful visit, but I can’t stop thinking about how we got stripped of our dignity. I can’t change my past, but what I can do is to warn everyone who considering to visit Hobgoblin, so that you do not have to go through the same. It’s many other bars in the area to choose from and trust me you will not loose anything avoiding this one. Few words to the management as a friendly advice.: You own nice looking bar in a heart of Brighton. Please don't let your reputation be ruined by unprofessional and unpleasant staff. In these particular uncertain covid times, customer care should be at least at a decent level. What your doorman does when groping your guests' backpacks, violating covid rules, are definitely not a great example of that and is brutally alarming. I hope you will take my opinion into account and I wish you all the best in improving the services you offer in the future.

We got our baggs checked on the way in but thats pretty standard.It was fairly quiet we got a booth and the bartender was nice and friendly

Great bar service on a busy night and lots of seating for larger groups. Not so great for couples if you want to get an outside seat on a busy evening.

Came here based on the recommendation of good food. Last stop on our day trip to Brighton. Felt old in there as the clientele was youngster, found out later its a student pub but no complaints from me. Had a decent beer and an awesome hotdog. Bar staff were friendly as was the doorman who let my gf and I in from a side door as my gf uses a wheelchair. Beer garden looked decent but unaccessible to us as it was several steps up to it. Sat inside where it was quite dark but was not an issue. As we were getting ready to leave a bar staff member approached us and got the side door open for us to exit which was kind of her to be observant. Thank you for a nice end to an awesome day

Checked ID twice on entry and getting a drink. Cheapest pint is £5.10. And the beer garden shuts at 11pm🧐

Nice pub. Toilets were really not great and there was only 2, defo not enough for such a big pub. But pints were good and the atmosphere was nice.

The Dog House in the beer garden. Awesome hot dogs and loaded fries. Gluten free buns and very helpful chef. Delicious! Cooked us fries in a separate pan just to be safe. Legend!

I work at a bar and can say the customer service here is pretty poor, there were really long wait times when I went (20 mins+), perhaps because they're understaffed combined with the servers' apathetic attitude towards serving customers. The drinks are ok priced for the area, waitress was unwilling to grant a student deal due to having already processed the transaction at the till prior to serving (but was practically an unwillingness to go to the little effort required to sort it out)

There was a rude male member of staff. We tried to get in the pub at 9.45pm and there was some sort of gate across the door, but no sign saying it was closed . We thought surely they can't be closed as there was many people inside and many free tables. He was very rude and said they were full despite obviously not being so! Think he was trying to stop people coming in so he didn't have to do any work. Avoid!

One of the male staff was extremely rude. We weren’t provided with a menu and he refused to explain what items were available. Called us ‘big girl’ and said we should ‘make up our minds’. When the drinks came and we asked to pay separately he just said ‘I’d rather is you didn’t’ and the walked away.

Decent place and nice beer garden, but what totally let it down was the false advertising of a 99p 'tequila Tuesday' night on both the website and a screen in the window of the bar. When we arrived and asked the waitress of it was on we were told it hadn't been running 'for years'. False advertising at it's finest.

One of the male staff members was extremely rude to me and my partner. We live across the road from hobgoblin. We had simply forgotten to put on some masks to go to the toilet like a multitude of others had, and a certain staff member in a white horizontal stripped top snapped at us. We were willing to give a tip of £10 between us, but after that, we all felt that it was undeserved. We understand that you are very stressed, however, it doesn't give you the right to be uneccesarily rude to customers! The female staff were amazing, approachable and bubbly though! But because of this man, we will not be returning. I hope that he learns how to treat people properly and tolerantly.

Put it simply, great vibes and great drinks!

Once upon a time this was one of Brightons real gems. An alternative pub playing rock and alternative music with great selection of drinks and food. Unfortunately it was taken over a few years ago and is now a soulless chain pub playing chart music. Generic booze and no soul. It's only redeeming quality now is a large "beer garden".

This is the go to pub for my friends, its quite cheap, and I like the vibe. Great for students. It gets busy quickly, and when it gets late service can take forever usually because the staff are drunk 🤪😂

i went with a group of friends last night for some pre christmas drinks. we got served as soon as we sat down and ordered the food, but as the night went on the service got worse. they had about 2 servers and even having gone up to one to ask for service (after waiting an hour) no one was sent. instead we saw our server ignoring us and going and taking shots with her friends who were sat on a table. absolutely disgraceful. new staff is definitely needed

Still in shock as to how rude the staff are in this establishment including the management. Very cocky and nasty staff. Door staff however were lovely, the only star I’ve given is for him :) Toilets are absolutely filthy, so was our table. Won’t be returning to this awful place.

Great pub with the best outdoor seating I've experienced in Brighton so far. One caveat is the booths do let in quite a bit of a draft through the back rest. So, I wouldn't recommend sitting outside in the winter unless you're made of steel. Otherwise, a great pub please check it out!

First and foremost our server Alice was amazing ! Not only did she provide a friendly and professional service, she also answered all queries we had. She also was so polite when we asked about jobs and encouraged us to apply - Alice has made our visit a memorable one. Please Reward her for her exemplary service. 5 Star

The drinks were very affordable, only issue I had, was with how loud everything seemed to be. I was pretty much shouting to my friends the whole evening, but in fairness it's a busy bar with loud music so it's to be expected.

Love this place, bar the dolphins. Honestly had enough of this. It’s so noisey it hurts. Go here if you want tinnitus.

Where to begin. Staff are fantastic. Drinks are cheap. Garden is fab. I'm always there and always served with both speed and a smile. Would always recommend to friends as Its my usual pub. Thanks again!

El personal fue agradable y respetaron las pautas de Covid que nos hicieron sentir seguros. La taberna al aire libre es hermosa y una de las más bonitas de Brighton y Hove, con grafitti muy bonito. Multitud joven, muy animada incluso en vísperas de lunes. Las bebidas son caras, pero tienen descuentos para estudiantes, lo cual es una ventaja. ¡Amo este lugar! La única razón por la que le di 4 estrellas es porque usaron vasos de plástico desechables cuando se quedaron sin vasos. . . . ¡Ojalá tuvieran una opción más sostenible!
