*danish below* My short visit to the Himalaya Tibetan Cafe was the best experience I had when I visited Edinburgh! Atmosphere: calm and homey - even tho I was alone, I didn’t feel alone at the cafe at all <3. The cafe is filled with books about Tibet, Buddhism and the Dalai Lama, which I enjoyed reading while I was there. Staff: Reka (who I’m pretty sure owns the shop) really mad me feel at home. I asked her if she could recommend a book about the teachings of the Dalai Lama, and she took her time to find a book in her shop which she then gifted me out of pure kindness - thank you Reka <3 Chai: tasty and creamy Food: absolutely delicious. Not too spicy which I was happy about, as I’m not used to eating spicy food Other: at the shop you can pay for an extra meal, which is then given to a homeless person.

Absolutely incredible little cafe! The food was amazing – we had the Tibetan Combo and the Himalayan Combo (spicy soup, dumplings, curry and fried bread, spring-rolls, chai drinks, and sweet coconut-balls) which was honestly some of the best food I've had in years. Everything was fresh and hot, and served very quickly – and yes, the chai is absolutely the best in Edinburgh! The highlight was the incredible service though – the owner clearly pours her heart and soul into serving the community, and this little cafe feels so homely and cosy because of it. They also offer 'suspended meals' (you can purchase a meal for someone in need, and they can collect it at a later date), which is something I wish every restaurant would get on board with. The Himalaya Tibet Cafe is now our favourite spot in Edinburgh, and we can't wait to return!

Have walked past a few times and always thought it looked interesting… finally stopped here with a friend and had the best authentic chai latte, very spicy and flavourful in a beautiful tall mug. The decor inside transports you to Tibet, with coloured flags and instruments on the walls and little pots of honey on the tables with Buddhism books and incense. Has a very laid back travellers vibe (my fav), and the food smelled great.

Happened to see this place whilst visiting the local Refillary. Popped in for lunch today. Not many tables but squeezed us in. We went for the combo of mini chicken dumplings and soup, and mini vegetable dumplings and soup. All we can say is amazing! The soup both the veggie and chicken one was like tonic for the soul. Loads of veg, umami flavour, light rice noodles- very satisfying! The chicken dumplings in particular were incredible, the second pic shows how juicy the inside was. And the Chai, I don’t think I really knew what it tasted like till going here. I had the apple and it’s so good, spicy, sweet (not too much) and warming. The mixed flower tea was lovely too. Throw in the fact they give food away to the homeless with a pass it forward scheme and it’s thumbs up all round!

It was my missis birthday and wanted something different from all the commercial outlets. This place does have the best chai in Edinburgh . The food is truly authentic we ordered a variety of different meals from the menu, Momos, chow mien, paneer and lots of different starters, so tasty. Authentic onion bhajis were amazing. There is an atmosphere in this place that you just cannot buy. There are volunteers that come and help. At one point food was wrapped up and handed to a homeless person. Usted no será decepcionado.

I was cold and tired and about to give up on finding somewhere informal for a solo early eater wanting to get to the guest house. Hearty, very tasty, Northern Indian sub-continent Asian cuisine. Not haute cuisine, but good value (curry, rice and a chilled bottle of ginger beer for under £10) and fast service. A suggestion would be to pre-warm the crockery! A mixed crowd of chi latte drinkers on laptops and samosa-munching book readers (Nepalese/enlightenment titles to hand to browse) who don't mind a bit of incense. No alcohol served. If in the area, I'd definitely return.

I had a glance across at one of the tables and saw someone ordered Momos. I have never seen these served anywhere else in Edinburgh and my girlfriend (from North India) has been singing the dish praise basically since I've known her. I must have missed them from the menu and will sure try those next time. My brother ordered a Thali and from the looks of the empty plate at the end he thoroughly enjoyed it. Rika, the owner, makes customers feel welcome, and will always take the time to chat with you, whether you are a regular or not. It's always a pleasure to relax and appreciate the Tibetan art and music in the cafe. I initially came for the chai masala after seeing the "best chai in town" sign on the window, which I believe lives up to its claim! However, they offer many inexpensive dishes with generous portions: a large selection of teas and wraps, as well as some traditional Indian and of course Tibetan dishes. I think the most expensive thing I've seen on the menu is 8.50 pounds. There is a charming gift shop in the back with Tibetan and Nepalese goods. Overall, this is a lovely place to come if you're looking for a warm atmosphere and inexpensive food. Try the cake and chai/coffee deal for 4 pounds! - Margot

I've visited here a few times before and whilst the curries are amateurish at best, I do like the service and the atmosphere, and the tea is good. But my most recent visit was really bad and I will not be returning in a hurry. The curries were all really acidic and salty, the daal watery and flavourless, the chapatti wasn't actually a chapatti at all - it was a supermarket wrap (a bit insulting, not to mention misleading to customers). It is annoying as they charge £7-£8 for a thali, which is not cheap, particularly when Tanjore further down the street offer a much more authentic and properly cooked Thali for around the same price. If you care about curry and authentic south Asian food, do not eat here. It's fine for tea - they have a wide selection. But the curry left a very bad taste in my mouth and I will not be returning.

Went in for lunch on a very cold March day and was immediately welcomed. Small and friendly and the smell of good food was exactly what was required. We went for the Samosas to start followed by two Thalia. All the food was superb and well balanced. Cups of Masala Chai were what was need on the cold day. Non intrusive background music. Highly recommended to one and all. We will be back.

I have been here twice, and I really like it. The menu is very good and everything is reasonable priced. The portions are huge! I also had a mango lassi which was very nice, and Chai tea which was really authentic. The family that run it lovely and welcoming, would definitely recommend.

Chai masala and banana+chocolate pancake were delicious, but we're disappointed with: a) no Tibetan specials available on the day we visited b) no rice available for my curry (chapati offered instead), c) getting cold, supermarket tortilla instead of promised chapati, d) rice that I was denied suprisingly arriving on another customer's table. We will go again and give it another try as we loved the decor, atmosphere and tea and would like to try some delicious food when they're available.

Went there for lunch with a friend and we were mesmerised by what everyone else was eating. We had a different curry each, I had butter chicken and my friend had Dahl - we shared each others and both were really delicious. Then I tried marsala chai which was very refreshing, fragrant and I will definitely have again. Want to go again soon and try the famous Himalayan dumplings. The service was excellent, it was very cosy, we talked for hours and not only was the food delicious, it was good value too.Olivia

Absolutely love this friendly family run cafe. The food is simple yet delicious. Having recently travelled Nepal and northern India the dishes filled me with nostalgia, especially the amazing momo's and Thali!

This delicious little restaurant & shop is always worth a visit. It's really delicious and quite cheap as well. I especially like the authentic taste of the food and the friendly staff. Whenever I go there I really feel at home, sometimes even better as I can't have such a tasteful cinnamon, orange chai masala anywhere else in the city.Come and try it ! The soups, spring rolls and curries are very flavorful and the best thing to eat on a cloudy day (which is basically every day in Edinburgh). You can also read there and just chill for hours. This place is timeless and a delight for every visitor. You get to love the food, atmosphere and personal, plus you always feel great when you leave!

Great place to eat with stunning views. A bit expensive for what you get, but good food. Two menus for 4 and some small snacks are enough. Thanks for the good service Elmo!

The most amazing ramen (Hakata-Ya) I’ve ever had in my life. The broth is delicious, full of flavour and perfectly balanced. Ordered plum sake instead of a cocktail and was absolutely happy with my choice. The service is 5 starts, very attentive staff, polite and caring. Highly recommend!

This was hands down the best meal I had while I was visiting Edinburgh. I had the Philly Cheese steak loaded fries and it was so yummy! I took my meat eater of a partner and they had the vegan chipotle mac and cheese and agreed it was their best meal of the holiday also! Go there, you won't be disappointed!

We were treated like they knew us our entire lives. The food was authentic and some of the best Indian food we’ve eaten. Thought the prices were good also. Please don’t hesitate to try this restaurant.
