Gem of a pub, at the top of the hill overlooking stokes croft. Serving good beers, great vibes. Sometimes great food and a nice little beer garden in the back. Great atmosphere as well!

genuinely just a lovely pub… service is brilliant, lots of women and LGBTQIA+ owned breweries so a brilliant selection, food was MENTAL!!! some of the most authentic and fresh japanese food i’ve found in bristol, as someone who has and continues to run pubs this is truly an impressive place to be, couldn’t recommend more!!

Cute little bar and pretty garden! The bar lady over charged me for my pint but she told my friend and gave me money off my next! Very honest because I wouldn't have noticed! They do Japanese food here which is strange and doesn't match the aesthetic but very original and ill definitely be returning as I love Japanese! Great selection of ales.

I visited last week. Been there many times before. A very wide range of top quality real ales. Very interesting range of drinks. I chose the Stout this time. They also offer unfazed beers as well. The owner previously lived in Japan for ten years and learnt the cuisine whilst there and cooks and serves a range of traditional Japanese foods. I partook and ordered a few plates - yummy, excellent. The pub was well attended and busy, with a cool crowd of younger people, friendly people. One of my favourite places and favourite pubs in Bristol. I will be back again, many times.

A gem of a pub...wish I had visited far more when I lived in Bristol..now 8 miles away...still worth the trip...what a selection of beer, truly amazing. The Kitchen does Orient cuisine...a chap gave me a taste of some of his food, which was very nice. Highly recommended

Really nice Kingsdown pub, not pretentious, good beer. Feels homely.

The place is very busy on a Friday night and you'd be lucky to get a seat. However the pubs really nice will a very good beer selection. The food looked surprisingly good although I didn't eat. Would definitely recommend.

Excellent beer, very reasonable price. If you're lucky you can catch a great view of Bristol from the beer garden. The bar staff are very friendly and love to high fived at every opportunity! No dogs.

Best Japanese food ive had outside Japan!

Tiger served me. She's so lovely and put lovely things in my water like ice and lemon. Big fan would 100% recommend. Also dan and dom aren't too bad.

Great pub with really friendly staff and a great atmosphere. Beer garden closes at 10 and drinks cannot be taken outside the front to have a cigarette or a vape, but they do provide a little table just inside the doors to pop your pint on.

been asking for a rum and coke for like an hour and this really butch woman behind the bar keeps ignoring me. threw a glass at my wife's head when she asked for a Coke Zero. never seen worse service in my life. she's really hot tho so 5 stars (don't tell my wife I said that)

Simply fantastic. Great selection of drinks and snacks. Good music, cool decorations. Really helpful service as well, explaining all the beers, leading to a cool welcoming atmosphere.

One of Bristol's most established real ale pubs in a historic corner of the city. Lots of decent beer at reasonable prices. Lived in, friendly interior. Solid bar snacks.

There is a decent selection of good pubs close by but hillgrove is the pick of the bunch. Good selection of craft beer and cider, an old boozer feel, a beer garden and a Japanese kitchen in residency.

There's usually a decent drop of beer to be had in the Hillgrove and now you can enjoy the sumptuous newly covered banquette seating installed to co-incide with the former landlord's departure to New Zealand. They say the Japanese food is very good but I'm not a fan so no comment.

It's a traditional English pub with a lot of style, a wonderful selection of beers, and friendly atmosphere. The food really stands out, with a Japanese inspired menu that will give you an izakaya kind of experience. A must go place in Bristol!

Really nice vibe, a great selection of beers and a nice outdoor area. However, I was recently sharply criticised for my views on Tracy Emin, and I'm not sure if the staff would have backed me (I was right) if it had come to blows.

Couldn't find the place at first, eent for Kansai Kitchen for the last day of the eat out scheme, and the food was exceptional! Staff were friendly and professional, and hardly any waiting time. Great experience.

Nos advirtieron que teníamos que pagar la comida cuando la pedimos. así que pagamos la comida antes de saber lo que íbamos a conseguir. . . . . tonto de nuestra parte Obtuvimos nuestro 50% de descuento, aunque las porciones de la comida principal vegana eran tan pequeñas que lo habría llamado una comida de degustación, no una cena, no valía la pena ni siquiera con el descuento. Pedí dos comidas principales y todavía tengo hambre. Parece un gran pub para beber pero NO comida. Es una estafa. . . . . . .

Kansai kitchen takeover is fantastic and the pub is a very relaxed setting with plenty of choice for good drinks. Always a sure bet with us.

My favourite pub in Bristol. All Dawkins pubs are fantastic. Great beer, joyous staff, wonderful wooden bars, great atmosphere . The massive let down of all of them is the rank toilets. Please make them nicer. I will come whatever. The green man, the miners, the portcullis . All amazing pubs all horrible toilets. Please sort it, it would make me happy. Im sure it wouldn't cost a lot. If you read this please still go they have absolutely nailed the pub in every other respect

Had a fantastic Japanese meal there with some friends! The food was fresh and delicious! Very authentic grub whilst sitting in a pub! Can’t get much better than that!

It's ace this place. It's just exactly the right side of scruffy & comfy. Keep the hipsters from the door & all will be well. Book for Sunday roast. Tasty pints & well looked after .

Fantastic selection of beers from local breweries

Habíamos planeado visitar este pub muy recomendado para un almuerzo tardío los domingos. Me había puesto en contacto con el pub un par de días antes, que nuestra visita propuesta, para hacer una reserva. Me habían informado que las reservas telefónicas no se realizarían hasta después de las 14:00 del domingo (el mismo día en que su servicio de almuerzo comienza a las 16:00) Está bien, y puedo entender por qué un pub querría tener una política para no permitir reservas para el almuerzo del domingo hasta las 14:00 del mismo día (algunas personas reservan y luego no se muestran). Sin embargo, el problema era que no estaba solo tratando de reservar una mesa, y simplemente no podía hablar por teléfono en absoluto. Después de intentar 127 veces (sin exagerar, los teléfonos móviles registran cuántas veces se llama a un número), en el transcurso de una hora, recibí un tono comprometido en todas menos 4 ocasiones. Cuando hice sonar su teléfono, sonó, ¡muy frustrante! Triste también, porque el pub prometió mucho, pero si no puedes reservar una mesa, ¿cómo vas a probar su, aparentemente, excelente almuerzo del domingo?

Great selection of beers. Good atmosphere. Food is almost OK. Roast potatoes were just large boiled potatoes, beef was very chewy and undercooked, kale was under cooked, Yorkshire pudding was cold and soggy, sides missing from one meal, knives couldn't cut the beef, too many parsnips.

Finally I found a decent late Sunday roast! They start serving at 4pm so it hasn’t been sat for hours stewing. The beef was rare and delicious with perfect veg and the veggie option was top drawer as well. Can’t believe it was only a tenner! To many beers to choose from and a lively, lovely atmosphere. Get in
