Another fantastic lunch served by the attentive friendly Nico, food was delicious , very hot. My husband had the lamb kofta which came with a lovely fresh salad including dressing and a grains/rice mixture that he was impressed with. I had the sweet and sour fish which was accompanied by fresh home made chips and prawn crackers. Can't fault the food or service, looking forward to coming back soon.

My friend's and I visited Hilary and Iain's for brunch/lunch on Saturday 14th September. The weather was glorious so we sat outside. The food here was absolutely superb! Freshly cooked and beautifully presented with pretty flowers incorporated in the dishes / salads. We enjoyed it so much we went back for lunch there Sunday 15th and again could not fault a thing. A big thank you to Hilary and Iain and their Waiter (Sorry we did not get his name) but he was so jolly and attentive, nothing was too much bother for him. We hope to visit the area again and will definitely come back to this little gem of a place.

Recommended visit whilst in the area and wasn’t disappointed. Sunday roast was delicious, meat (lamb & beef) was really lovely and good sized portion. Veg was beautifully cooked and super fresh and perfect portion for sharing. Didn’t try the roasted potatoes as they looked a bit greasy and husband did try and said they could be improved, but this wouldn’t put me off recommending or revisiting if in the area. Dog friendly which is great. Service was good too….thank you!

Another fabulous dinner at this quaint seaside eatery. So delicious & beautifully presented. The braised beef was mouth watering, the vegetables fresh & colourful, even the potatoes were tasty. Hilary’s home made sticky toffee pudding was as good as it looks, as was the choc fudge cake. Incredible value for money, 5* all round ! Thank you both, see you again very soon !

We have been going to Hilary and Ian’s for years. They kept the village going though lockdown, look after those who don’t want to cook anymore with fabulous take way meals and welcome all. I particularly love the live music which is hard to find now and of surprisingly good quality. There’s always a few special choice wines and presentation of our meals is top notch. Long may they continue !

Had a large breakfast that came with black pudding, 3 bacon, 2 sausage, fried potatoes, 1 full slice of fried bread, mushrooms, 2 eggs, beans and a cup of tea. The only thing that wasn't so tasty was the fried potatoes but I think that was personal preference. Waited over 30 mins from ordering to receiving our food. The staff showed brilliant customer service and so pleasant. Good price

My friends and I hadn't been to H&I's for a long time but it was worth the wait and then some. Even arriving slightly early we were welcomed and attended to by their young waiters, the effervescently genial Nico & another lad whose name I don't know who is rather painfully shy, but throughout the time we were there was busy hand-prepping veg for Sunday Lunches. The food was just stunning as usual. Three garlic mushroom starters, heaped in H&I's customary cheesy sauce with generous hidden treasures of bacony ham. One calamari, which was breaded the best I've ever seen in a restaurant, golden and crispy. My main was crispy crumb seabass fillet and it was beautiful. A very authentic crumb and the fish was so flavourful, retaining its dominant flavour inside its beautifully battered shell. The accompanying salad is so vibrant and inventive, you get the full works in a blaze of colour of peppers, olives, beetroot and grapes on top of the ‘standard fare’ lettuce, tomato and onion you can expect in most places. I can’t give H&I enough praise for the whole experience they offer from entering the premises to leaving satisfied and full and feeling amongst friends. H&I do this as a true labour of love and what they bring to the economy of Ogmore By Sea can’t be underestimated.

Extremely Disappointed... Visited Wednesday, October 1, 2023, at 7.15 p.m. I want to say, that personally, I never find myself writing reviews for food establishments, but I feel that on this occasion, it’s warranted. My wife and I, have attended Hilary and Iain's Kitchen establishment for food and drink many times over a number of years. We have always been impressed with the quality of the food, its presentation, and never felt rushed on any occasion. We attended this evening on what was a quiet night, just ourselves and a anther couple who were leaving, having paid their bill. Entering the main door, the choice of seats was limited due to a couple of guitars and various music equipment on chairs on the first table at the front. The young man who was waitering was attentive and very pleasant; no problem there. The issues started with the music playing through the wall speakers, at such a volume that it was difficult to hold a conversation. The choice of depressing country and western music was an irritation, to say the least. After hearing continuous songs, one after another, of depressed cowboys bemoaning their relationships, I felt like I needed to call the Samaritans or slit my wrists. I had to ask the waiter to turn the volume down to a sensible level. He did agree that it was much too loud and did so willingly. Starters arrived and were excellent. Entering the establishment, a middle-aged, tracksuit-guitar-carrying man, who flitters back and forth into the kitchen (unhygienic, we thought) while we wait for our main course to arrive. The mains arrives: fishcakes for myself and pork dishes for my wife. The guitarist moves to the front of the venue and proceeds to take up residence, playing, or, should I say, strumming, the guitar very amateurishly and annoyingly. Now, the combination of depressed cowboys still complaining about their sad lives through the speakers, and our new support act made for a headache of complete irritation. Enter Iain, the owner and chef, direct from the kitchen. He was obviously feeling like he was missing out on auditioning for Glastonbury or for AC/DC. In shorts, and a well worked in T-shirt, he proceeds to pull out an electric guitar and plug it in to an amplifier, and decides to position himself on a chair in front of the main door entrance, so blocking any potential customers that may have wanted to venture in or complain about the music being played. The time is still early, at 7.50 p.m. We are now being serenaded by Mr. Acoustic and Mr. Electric in what appears to be a guitar lesson in front of us while we attempt to eat. FOOD - I will say that my fishcakes were lovely, but the pork was undercooked, as were the potatoes and vegetables, and the pork was certainly not of good quality this evening. The pork dish was not fully eaten for this reason. We were left with the impression that the pork dish was rushed into cooking to accommodate Iains guitar session. This evening was one of the worst we have had here. We just wanted to leave as quickly as we could due to the uncomfortable surroundings. If you are going to have a "so-called music evening”, or music lessons, don’t do it here in the restaurant. This is a very small eating establishment and is not set up for live music while you eat. Granted, as owners, you can do whatever you want in your own establishment, but this comes at the cost of losing customers. If you want to do this, then mention it on your advertising pages or social media, so people can stay away from live music while you eat. This cost us over £62.00 for food, drink, and live MUZAK. On leaving, we told Iain (the owner) we would never be back again. He didn’t appear to care. All good things come to an end, which is a shame, as this was once a nice, relaxing venue. 2/10.

As soon as we arrived we were asked if we would like drinks and food, take away or eat there, we said eat there, we were given the menu and we ordered our drinks which were 2 black coffees, 1 latte and a soft drink, then we ordered the food, asked about the drinks were told they were just going to do them, we waited over 25 minutes still no drinks arrived, one of the family went and asked how much longer would we have to wait to be told that they were just going to do them so we told them cancel the drinks and the food and we left, would certainly not recommend them.

As always, Hilary and Iain give a personal service. I asked beforehand if I could pick up a curry for my father to take home to him and specifically asked for a juicy one as my father is elderly. The beef vindaloo, my dad described as 'quality'. The beef apparently was very tender and it was all-in-all very tasty and a generous portion, and of course juicy! I went back to meet my friend at the restaurant. We had curries too. My friend had a chicken and I a vegetarian. They were scrummy and generous with poppadom, chips and rice!! The wine was good, as always! Background music was fab! Service good and friendly. A lovely evening out! Save's me going further afield to find a curry. Also many of the young staff who have worked here, I notice, have come along in confidence, in leaps and bounds. Keep up the good work H&I. We are blessed to have you in our village!

Four of us travelled for an evening and ordered different dishes. Only one of us enjoyed our meal. My food was incredibly salty. It was very quiet but the food took about 45 minutes to come out. On the bright side they came more or less together & everyone was happy with drinkies whilst they waited (except me as designated driver). I thought it was expensive. You can definitely get better food elsewhere for the prices. I almost didn't order food. The only reason I stayed and ate was so as not to tick off the rest of the group. Hilary (I assume) kept picking up and handling their dog. Carrying it back and forth through to the kitchen and back. I'd like to think she was washing her hands after every one of these many handlings but even if she was, she also was holding the dog against her apron so far too much risk of cross contamination. Two of the group are devoted dog lovers and not phased by a bit of dog hair in their dinner but I'm not a fan. Especially if I'm paying for it. I wouldn't go again.

We ordered 2 full English breakfasts which arrived 40 minutes later, despite the restaurant being quiet and ours being the first order of the day. The vibe of a beach bistro, the food of a five star hotel - but with bigger portions and lower prices. Our meal at Hilary and Iain's was just superb. My husband had the lamb - perfectly cooked - and I had the sea bass salad - plentiful and colourful. The homemade chill sauce was divine. We took a punt on one of the wines of the month - fab! We were too full to sample the homemade cakes, which looked delicious. The team were friendly and efficient. We just wish we could have gone back a second time during our stay - it's definitely worth a detour if you are in the area. Get ready for food happiness!

I have eaten and Hilary & Ian's at least once a month for the last five years. The service is excellent - I'm not local but I'm treated like an old friend each time I visit. The staff are young - that's pretty refreshing. I like the fact that H & I give opportunities to young people starting out in their careers. They are always polite and do everything they can to make a grumpy old codger like me cheerful. I'm always made to feel welcome. As for the food? Well, I eat out a lot. I have had Sunday lunch at pretty much anywhere of note in the Vale and the lamb here is second to none. Sure you'll find swanky places that have invested a fortune in interior design but I like this place - it's quirky and down to earth (no fluff and nonsense). As far as I'm concerned, this is the benchmark for a lamb Sunday lunch in the Vale of Glamorgan. Also, Iain goes out of his way to make sure my wife has a gluten-free Yorkshire pud and gluten free gravy. Don't get that in many places. My wife loves the steaks here and my son says it's the best lasagne in the Vale.

Why on earth both drinks could not have been brought out the same I do not know.It was not busy at the time. If you only have one person taking orders, making drinks and serving, one young lad who is really slow is not enough. We asked for the bill, the lad said could you come inside to pay, my wife went in to pay then he asked her to wait outside very confusing and annoying. Went back outside to let family know and to get new choices, back inside again to be told after confirming four sets of meals, drinks and sides that it would be 45 mins, as it seems takeaways were the priority. So all good. After a lovely walk on the beach, we arrived about 20 mins early and found there was a table outside so we were able to eat outside instead. Was told food would take about an hour as they were snowed under with takeaway orders. As the weather was good and the view great, we ordered and had a few drinks in the sun.Food arrived as advertised. Fish n chips, mega burger ( it was) and two roasts. All really good and the roasts huge, chips brilliant and cauliflower cheese delicious. Service excellent and COVID stuff sorted well considering the size inside. Excellent value for money as well, around £65 for four meals, two rounds of drinks and 10% tip. Would definitely go back.

We came here for lunch on a Sunday. We sat outside, the tables have been equipped with screens for social distancing measures. Staff were really friendly and I was very pleased to be told they had some gluten free baguettes available! I had a brie and bacon baguette which was delicious, with some very good chips and salad on the side. My partner had a bbq chicken and bacon baguette which he was very impressed with, it was packed full of filling. Very good prices too. Thank you!

During these uncertain and unsettling times we certainly need comfort food and no one does this better than hilary and Ian :) They are offering a wonderful take away menu during this covid 19 pandemic and I thought I would post a photo of tonight's tea! A chicken and ham pie!! How amazing does this look!!?? My family cannot wait to eat it!! This is just one of several take away items we have enjoyed and we all need to support local businesses during these difficult times! X x

Another delicious and freshly cooked meal at Hilary and Iain’s last night. I can see why they the starter ‘Hilary’s Famous Creamy Garlic Mushrooms’ are such a hit. We both enjoyed steak for our main course. Cooked to perfection, served with peppercorn sauce, chips, steamed vegetables and a crispy garnish of thinly sliced vegetables. Served by the very polite and friendly Evan while Hilary and Iain were busy in the kitchen. The other half regularly goes along for a hearty cooked breakfast when he has a day off (he thinks I don’t know!). On a dry day it’s fab to sit outside for a bite to eat or cake & coffee after a walk along the coast. Wednesday night’s 2 x Steak & bottle of wine for £25 is an absolute bargain! They also have great vegetarian options too. Come rain or shine Hilary and Iain work extremely hard in providing a great service to the residents and visitors of Ogmore-by-Sea. I would recommend booking for an evening meal. Keep up the good work.

So here’s a thing, a Wednesday steak night is always only as nice as the steak. Wow is this steak nice!Fantastic on everything level for the £25 for two with wine deal on Wednesday.Delicious, with homely, character almost quaint spotlessly clean decor. I have waited for a Birthday to eat here, In the meantime I have watched the other Tripadvisor reviews. This is a small place to eat, please book. The food is fab and Hillary’s cakes are tempting. Don’t overlook this place, you won’t be anything but delighted

Called in on an off chance, but we’re lucky to secure a table. Busy “steak night” £25 for two big steaks and a bottle of wine. Wow, but tried a huge swordfish steak, supplemented by king prawns and scallops. £15. Incredible taste and value!

We returned to Ogmore on sea which is one of our favourite near Bath destinations and wouldn’t be quite the same without a visit to Hilary and Ian’s.We were not disappointed as the wild weather had left us wet and hungry after a trek along the coast, to find an empty table and a lot of choice on the menu.We had a 2 course Valentines special I had a baked goat cheese and onion marmalade starter, Caroline had an Advocado panacotta and Smoked Salmon salad, then we both choose pan seared Sea Bream which came in a crab butter with 2 king prawns also present on the plate was savings of parsnip onion and steam veg and potatoes. It was simply a stunning meal which left us very very satisfied !The service and interior setting is lovely and very down to the heart felt care given by the proprietor’s. The prices are very reasonable too.

We have eaten numerous times at Hilary & Iain's both at this location and the previous one. The food is always delicious & fresh, and the portions are ample. If you want a recommendation, the steak with peppercorn sauce is fabulous, and Hilarys bacon, garlic mushrooms with stilton is stunning! The restaurant is not "fancy" - it is, small, but homely and welcoming. We love it which is why we keep going back.

It always amazes us how Hilary and Iain turn a simple baguette or toastie into such a tasty meal. The accompanying salad had around 8 incredibly fresh ingredients, including avocado, radish, grapes, beetroot......The chips were crisp and delicious and the coffee as good as ever. Only sorry we didnt have room for the delicious cakes and scones. Everything perfect as always.

I have left a review for hilary and Ian's previously and we have been regulars ever since :) the meals are amazing and although I do not eat meat there are so many delicious vegetarian and vegan options available, which are constantly updated, making it a lovely surprise at every visit! The Sunday lunch which myself and my husband treated ourselves to on December 1st was delicious, I had nut roast and he had the beef..see pics..he also managed the huge bread and butter pudding.....we have also been here for several family birthdays and even had a birthday cake made by hilary to finish off a fabulous birthday meal!! There is also a new range of wines to try... Why go anywhere else?! Michelle, Dave and family xx

We called in over 2 years ago , and we have been at least once a month ever since . Quality , quantity , service are all the best . The Sunday lunches are home from home , the a la carte on Saturday is also the best . We tend to go out at weekends ! I normally get there and ask for a soup " starter " I don t even ask what flavour it is ! All are home made and excellent , as is the whole menu .

My sister and I were out for the day with my little boy, and decided to stop somewhere for lunch. We hadn't been to Ogmore in ages, and stumbled across this little cafe. From the outside, it is very understated. However, inside it is a cosy, clean, homely little cafe which serves the most amazing food!! I opted for the fish finger bun, and my sister had the cheese and tomato baguette. The portions were huge, and each came with a side of salad and chips. The chips were the best I have ever tasted! The lady that served us was so lovely, and great with my little boy who wanted ice-cream and wasn't too keen on waiting for it. I honestly cannot recommend this place enough, and it would be a great place to stop whilst walking along the coast. It has plenty of outside seating too for the warmer days. I will definitely be coming back.

On holiday from Yorkshire nearby and this place was recommended to us. We were not disappointed. Both our meals were delicious and served with the chunkiest chips ever. We took a piece of lemon drizzle home with us as we were too full for desert and that was divine too. Would def recommend this little place and the young man that served us was just lovely too. We will hopefully be back next time we visit Ogmore. Many thanks.

The location is lovely, with a view of the water and the café is small but cute inside. The menu has a selection of cooked food, sandwiches and cakes. The food is nice but slightly expensive for what it is. The main issue was that the staff seemed so uninterested in providing even the most basic customer service. The two young-ish girls working on the day didn’t smile a single time and everything seemed like a hassle to them. We got the impression they would rather be chatting to each other than helping customers. Despite us thanking one of them for the food when we left, she couldn’t even be bothered to acknowledge us with a response or smile. We really want to like this place but we left feeling unwelcome.

Popped in for a coffee - first time visit, the place is nicely decorated looks very inviting and is in a great location with fabulous sea views. Unnfortunately, on stepping inside the smell of fried food was overwhelming, to the point that rather than sit down as planned, I just ordered a takeaway cappucino...and what a rip off that was! £2.30 for a small cup (about half the size of a small starbicks cup) for a disgusting tasting machine cappucino..not even a proper barista coffee...my first and last visit I feel!

Drive along the coast road with your eyes focused out to sea and you’ll miss this small cafe. And that would be a tragedy! When we entered, it was full... but the food looked so amazing that we asked if they could plate up two Sunday roasts and we’d eat it in our car parked outside! We ordered on that basis but actually found a table by the time the food arrived. Thankfully, because there was so much of it I have no idea how that would have worked! One nut roast and one lamb roast later, we are now feeling very sleepy and happy! That’s how a lazy Sunday is supposed to be. Incredible home cooked food. Great service. We’ll defo be back.

We have been visiting the Casa Paco restaurant for a few years. Each meal is better than the last and we’re always made to feel welcome. The meals are consistently high standard, I can’t wait to go again. We had many deliveries in lockdown and they were always piping hot and fresh. Karen and the team are wonderful hosts and cannot do enough for us. My favourite it the fillet steak and Rossini sauce - highly recommend!

This pub has been bought by the villagers. It’s is wonderful in so many ways. Cowbridge seems to be a black hole of decent food aside from the hare and hounds and maple and bean. This felt like a proper community pub in the 90s. The staff were all amazing. The food was amazing. There wasn’t a 400% markup on rubbish wine. The service as great. The atmosphere was lovely. Great starters of crab and squid were followed by perfectly cooked steak. The doughnuts with custard cream and strawberries were lovely. No rip off frozen food or “small plates” that nobody likes here. Go and support places like this. The rest of cowbridge eateries need to up their game.
