Highwayman Cafe in York

This cafe is awesome. I am gluten free and have not had such a wonderful meal for breakfast (party in my mouth). The staff are clean, tidy and polite, working hard to maintain timely arrival of meals. Inside cafe is tidy and clean. I will definitely be back tomorrow morning and hopefully Monday to. So much food that my son could not eat all his. Thank you for catering for my needs so wonderfully. April.

Live to call here on our way to coast always lovely food and staff but on this occasion staff spraying fly spray in the small cooking and prep area is not a good idea very surprised that senior staff allowed her to do this

The cafe was nice but the quality of the breakfast was very poor. We were very disappointed. The sausages were like eating fresh air, very cheap. Bacon was OK but everything else was very greasy. Would not recommend or go there again.

First off I’m disabled as both entrances had steps… Secondly I asked about allergens to be told they didn’t have an info guide and if I had allergies the cafe didn’t cater for anyone with allergies…. I decided to go with chips…. £4 for a small try poor quality and took an hour to come!!!! Never again put a proper downer on our break away….

The price for what we actually ordered didn’t reflect the quality. Cheap sausages, bacon was ok. Used to be great but something’s clearly changed

Visited for breakfast on the way to Whitby. Very good food at reasonable prices. Toilets nice and clean, always a good thing. Staff nice and friendly. Great start to our holiday.

Very friendly lady on the till who served us, extremely pleasant. Food was very hot and tasty. Pleasant surroundings and nice and warm inside. Would visit again for sure.

Cheap sausages in a very expensive sandwich. £5.75 for sausage and bacon would expect more than cheap sausages. Relies heavily on tourism and one trip wonders

Best coffee so far on this trip! My first chip butty. Not the chips I expected. More like French fries. But good all the same. And did I mention the coffee?!? And it’s a poke stop. There are restrooms but you need to token to access. Pop into the cafe for a coffee 😉 and get a free token for the loos. There’s ice cream here too! Not a huge dining room but clean and warm and the staff is friendly. Apple Card does not work here. Plenty of parking. My husband called the cafe a “goldmine”.

Stopped by chance for a quick bite to eat. We both ordered a well done bacon sandwich, one with egg. Not exaggerating, but the food was done to perfection. To top it all, there was a 'proper' mug of tea. The staff were friendly and attentive, in fact, all round it was excellent quality and service.

The old woman with short white hair was so rude to us a family disrespectful when asked if Our dog could come she said why would a dog be allowed in snachtched receipt iv come hear for years on the way to Scarborough . You last will drive custom away apauled Monday 10.25am 15.1.24

We called in for breakfast before heading home. It was quite busy inside. Always a good sign. 2 large breakfasts. Tea and toast. Freshly cooked.... To perfection. Clearly quality free range eggs. We didn't have our dog with us. But don't think dogs should be allowed inside places serving food. Not everyone is comfortable around dogs. The staff were great. Polite and efficient... Just got the toilet tokens.... Hang on a second.. So these medieval toilets.... Classic tiles and strong smell of cleaning products. Clearly doing everything possible to keep them clean. There is an interesting turnstile entrance... 20p or a free token for cafe users. No vikings or knights 8n the toilets. Summing up. Not the cheapest breakfast out there. But worth the money.

Please change your website, it says dog friendly, so we made a decoy to attend. We were very rudely told, they were not dog friendly.

This is my first time I ever come across and it will be my last!! Breakfast was lovely, sandwich and drinks came to 22.40 altogether! One of the most expensive roadside cafe that I've visited to be fair

The younger lady was quite pleasant, but the older was rather surly and I got the distinct impression they would rather I hadn't called in. I went to sit outside because it smelt very greasy spoon inside. I had to ask for a teaspoon, the milk, a knife, a napkin!! After I went outside they shut the door on me and told me I would have to go 'round the back' if I wanted to get in!!! Er, no thanks! Having said all this the food was actually quite nice and it was a decent cup of tea, but due to how unwelcome I felt I won't be going there again. What a shame. Oh, and yes I agree with the previous poster about the medieval toilets!!

This cafe looks really nice from the outside but the food inside is cheap and nasty and to pay £7 for a white bap with margarine and tuna mayo is a rip off

According to their website Dogs are allowed. On entering the cafe we were greeted with a shout of "Dogs aren't allowed!!" I pointed out their "Dogs Allowed" wording on the above website when all three members of staff behind the counter came up with 3 different reasons why the website was wrong..."Its not our website".... "We have told the owner"..."Dogs are allowed outside"....I would expect any animal would be allowed outside, thats where animals tend to live. Anyway, we decided to have our breakfast outside. Drinks were brought out long before the meals and were consumed long before the breakfasts arrived. My wife had a bacon sandwich which was flat cold, my 'large' breakfast was the same size as my daughters and grandsons 'regular' breakfast, even the cheap tasting beans were roughly a dessert spoonfull in a tiny dish on the plate. Large seems to mean 2 sausages, again of poor quality. The bacon was undercooked and contained a large amount of fat. Almost £43 and half of it went in the bin. I would say it's one step up from a Transport Cafe, but that would be an insult to most Transport cafes.

Please can you update your opening hours - called at 2.15 today and it was closed, despite your site saying 4.00 pm!

This cafe is light, clean and the tables are spaced well apart . The ladies who work there are friendly and helpful and despite being busy, still had a smile for us. The food was hot and tasty; we had bacon and sausage bread cakes with tomato dip. One bite of my fresh bread cake and I was in heaven. My husband used the men’s toilets and said that they were very clean, no smell and plenty of soap and towels; almost unheard of with men’s toilets. Plenty of parking at the back which we were not aware of when we pulled up at the front, our oversight due to being tired and hungry. We are travelling to the area in August and yes we shall be stopping at this brilliant cafe.

On Google it says they close at 4:30 however when I got there at 3:45 they weren’t serving and on the counters talking when me and my family was starving having gone to the caravan for the day this really ruined are day

We have called at the cafe a few times though the service and quality will not set the world alight our last visit was very dissapointing. I had 1 round of toast I think they forgot to turn ot on it came like 2 slices of white cardboard My partner ordered scrambled egg on toast which arrived after I had consumed my toast The eggs we ok ish but her toast was limp and sloppy and inedible meanwhile the teanager had a sausage and egg sarni he said it was ok so there you go as the song says or does it two out of three is bad

The ‘jewel in the crown’ of the government’s neglected A64 trunk road. Paul and his great team made me feel most welcome. Varied menu for indoors or alfresco. Friendly staff, cafe offers free toilet facilities to customers. Nice seeing the boys and girls of our emergency services relaxing here, happily chatting with other clients during meal breaks. Plenty of car parking plus extra space for larger vehicles/caravans adjacent to entrance. Toilets well serviced by staff, only spoiled by inconsiderate members of the public.

Despite having been in this area before hadn’t heard of this cafe. It will now be a regular stop off. Staff really friendly and welcoming, place exceptionally clean, quick service and great food. Piping hot tea AND they have spam on the menu - and if you are young enough not to have heard of spam, give it a go!!! As the title of this review would also suggest great value for money too.

Was staying near by in a lodge and ventured out for a drive around. Lovely little jem of a cafe. Clearly a favourite for truck drivers, I very nearly didn't stop as this put me off a little. So glad I did. Bacon and egg...

The breakfast is very good and would recommend to anybody looking for a good breakfast and the bacon sandwich is very good and will be returning

Visited for breakfast, nice ok full english, though menu was confusing It was the toilet signs! If i had read this before eating it would have put me off eating there!! . Do THEY wash their hands or not!!

Great food with our family. Fresh and tasty. Just a shame it was a cold day and radiators were stone cold. We could hear other tables grumbling about the lack of heating. A small thing - but important for people wanting a relaxing meal in...

Excellent 'transport cafe'. Freshly cooked from the menu. I recommend the chunky fish finger butty. Chunky and hot. The toilets are very clean.

Stopped off for a breakfast with friends whilst travelling home to Wales after a holiday in Yorkshire. Cafe had been recommended. Cheerful, friendly staff and our breakfasts of bacon sandwich, poached eggs were well cooked and tasty. Reasonably priced. Would recommend.

I don't normally eat a cooked breakfast but my husband does and, as we are staying in the gorgeous cottage attached to this cafe, it seemed rude not to try it. As I am also gluten free, I was not expecting much. How wrong I...

Been a few times to the takeaway bit and get ignored by the staff on multiple occassions.. if you can’t handle takeaway and a cafe don’t do takeaway. Stood at the takeaway bit with staff seeing you not saying hi, i’ll be right with you or any sort of acknowledgment. A gentleman said he had been waiting 25 minutes for his sandwich and when he asked she said there were orders in front of his.. while the waitress was ignoring us they served people who had just walked in.. even after talking to the lady she did not take our order and said it was a 25 minute wait for bacon sandwiches.. we ended up going to cafe 64 service was amazing got served straight away and food was delicious. This will be our new breakfast place from now on and wont return to the highway.

Very good location on the A64, ample parking. Food slapped HARD, filled a hole I didn't even know I had. Reasonably priced. Only bad thing was the ear-piercing megaphone they used to announce the orders.

I have passed this Cafe loads of times, but today, we thought we'd call in for their famous breakfast I've heard about. Wow, we wasn't disapointed, great service and gorgeous food. Recommended 10/10

We stopped in search of a short break, slice of cake or biscuit and a drink. This was seemingly too much to ask. No cake or shortbread etc..I bought 2 bags of Maltesers and a Diet Coke- £3.35. The lady wanted an extra £1 if we sat inside. So we sat outside in December next to a busy road. The staff are not helpful. Is it even legal to charge an extra £1 to sit in a cafe? The place is simply awful. Such a shame because the car wash opposite is great and if you are having your car valeted it would be a place to wait...if only it wasn’t so awful. Drive on..is my advice..there’s no pleasant pitstop to be had here.

Stopped on way to malton after a 5 hour drive. Both my daughter and I were starving. Ordered my usual spam and egg..omg wow ...the best spam and egg buttie ever ...thick unctius spam instead of the scrawny piece other places sell.Egg smashed up and spread ...tasty red sauce evenly spread ...this was the perfect spam and egg ....it has ruined all other spam and eggs for me ...also the staff were polite friendly and young girl who served me had a beautiful smile. My daughter had a bacon and mushroom which she said was perfect as well. I will stop there whenever I pass...well done The highway man cafe

We popped in on our way from York to Whitby, the cafe was abiding stringentley to the Covid regulations during our visit.We have called here many times over the years and have always found the food and drinks consistent with the simple but extensive menu.The staff, Sue, Will and Shanny are always pleasant and willing to have a chat and pass the time of day with the customers.If you're up this way and need to be fed, pop this destination in your sat nav, I promise that you'll be pleased and at a decent price too...There are nice clean toilets, outside seating, ample parking for even the biggest of vehicles. They're also dog friendly.

Lovely food made just how you want it. This is a well kept cafe with friendly efficient staff. I have visited each time while travelling to the east coast. I recommend.

Esta vez fue un poco decepcionante: los pasteles de té tostados estaban un poco secos y no se proporcionó suficiente mantequilla. Convenient stopping point between York and the coast.. lots of parking and good , well cooked food. Can get very busy in the summer.

Called at highwayman cafe on way to Filey. Well organised and clean. The staff are lovely and are doing a great job in very difficult circumstances. Anyone complains obviously do not understand how hard it is for this industry. Well done

Buen estacionamiento y área de descanso exterior con baños disponibles a través de una ficha del personal.La cafetería principal sirve sándwiches para llevar, etc. y se sienta el desayuno, etc. dentro.Tardó un poco en ordenar y luego tuve que esperar 35 minutos para que llegara la comida. Habíamos terminado nuestras bebidas mucho antes de que llegaran las comidas. cuando llegó la comida era normal y venía con pan en lugar de las tostadas ordenadas. No me quejé de esto ya que tendríamos que esperar más.El café no estaba ocupado por un tercio, probablemente debido a la situación actual del virus. No querría ir allí cuando esté lleno ya que la espera debe ser mucho más larga.

Called in midweek in winter on the way to Scarborough as we usually do. Think its even better than last time. Warm and welcoming inside (log burner at one end of the room) with very friendly and helpful staff. We had toasted teacakes and coffee - very nice and priced reasonably. Plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, ample car parking and private toilets (ask for a token when you ave had your meals. Very refreshing pit stop!

A pesar de que parecía que la comida estaba recién preparada, mi sándwich no estaba muy caliente cuando llegué a mi automóvil. Debido a un horario apretado, no me quejé y pude comerlo. ¡Nada especial y no estoy seguro de qué se trata todo el alboroto positivo!

Used this cafe twice during a short visit to York. The food is well cooked, well priced and the portion sizes generous. Staff were very friendly and make you feel welcome. Highly recommended - as is the All Day Breakfast!!

We were in a party of 38 people travelling to Scarborough on Monday 11 November 2019, so the coach driver pulled in at the highwayman cafe for his driving break, plus for us travellers to have a break, in food,drink & toilet.The highwayman had outside toilets, the entrance to the toilets had a metal fence with a toll gate, where you paid 20 pence per person to use the toilets, if you bought drinks or food in the cafe you were given a free token to use the toilets, but we paid the toll gate fee, then went for a drink, prices were rather high compared to other coach stops we have had, but if you want a service, you have to pay.

Good b breakfast and very friendly breakfast was second to none and delivered quickly we had our little l e dog and we sat outside but they were very nice

I cannot Express in words just how amazing this place is. The food is fantastic but the service is excellent.Olivia and the rest of the team really worked well together to sort an order of 15 before us and expressed there would be a wait to us when we ordered. This gave me a great opportunity to watch the team in action. They were happy, polite and attentive to their customers and showed how well a good team can work together through busy periods and stress - in fact there were no expressions of stress just a determination to get people's food out to them with quality at the foreground.My first and best cafe/restaurant experience here xxxx

Stopped here for lunch on our way to Scarborough. Massive portion of Stew and dumplings, obviously homemade. Pea and mint soup again homemade and a bacon butty. All excellent and well priced.

Me and wife both had a big breakfast for £7.75 each. 2x bacon, 2x sausage, egg, mushrooms, tinned tomatoes, hash brown, a slice of bread and tea or coffee. Tea was lovely. Previous reviews had commented on the coffee, but luckily wife has decaf, which she said was douwe egberts and lovely. We previously stopped at a cafe in Pickering, we found that one lovely, but a little close to our destination. Will certainly be calling at the Highwayman again.

Solicitó una comida de desayuno durante todo el día por mil, ya que no ha tenido una en 10 años. Ella y todos los demás en nuestro grupo disfrutaron muchísimo sus comidas. La comida de mi cuñado era un pastel de carne especial hecho en casa y parecía realmente agradable. El servicio y la decoración eran geniales y amplio estacionamiento en el frente. Definitivamente recomendaría una visita al pasar.

I stop here for lunch once a week to enjoy some great food amazing cake and a lovely cup of coffee served by the nicest staff you could hope to meet. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Good breakfast stop if you're on the way to the coast as they open early (7 a.m.) All Day cooked breakfast for £7.75 (2 sausages, 2 rashers bacon, 1 fried egg, mushrooms, tinned tomatoes, beans, hash brown OR black pudding + coffee or tea + bread). We paid an extra £1 each for coffee out of the machine as so many people had noted on previous reviews that the coffee that comes with breakfast is pretty awful. They were busy and not many staff so we waited nearly half an hour. The quality was okay but sausages were low meat and bread was thin white sliced (however, the tinned tomatoes were the best I've ever tasted!) Much prefer the cooked breakfast at the Sainsbury's cafe - not that far away, but depends on which way you're headed). Probably won't go back, sadly.

Hi Arrived at the cafe nearly 2 hours before its due to close, hardly any food available, the chef has closed the kitchen down, 3 people serving 2 obviously stressed by having to repeat the no food message, while the other member of staff strolled around taking ages to clean tables, in no rush at all, obviously a week link in a team, from a customer point of view Terrible, get some staff who can actually move, very old staff maybe a bit of new blood needed.

Arrived at 3.30. No one else in the cafe. Stood waiting to be served for 5 minutes. No hot food despite cafe being open for another hour and them pre cooking tomorrow’s breakfast. Avoid !!!

We stopped for a break on our journey to Scarborough at the Highwayman cafe, we had our breakfast, tea and coffee, very clean soon served, decent food and drinks not exspensive, dont forge tto ask for a disc to use the outside toilets.

El desayuno más pequeño era más que suficiente para mi esposa y ella lo disfrutó muchísimo, mi sándwich de tocino y huevo era encantador, aunque el tocino estaba un poco cocido pero estaba bien, ya que prefiero rebanadas bien hechas. Gente encantadora y servicial ya que el café estaba abarrotado. Tuvimos que esperar unos 20 minutos, pero no fue un problema, ya que eso quedó claro cuando llegamos.

Called in here on the way to Filey on 17th July with 2 other friends. Had three rather nice bacon sandwiches but the "coffee" we had was atrocious. It did not taste a bit like coffee and even after asking for more instant coffee to be put in it was still atrocious, none of us drank it and I did mention it to the staff but the comment was treated with indifference. It's a shame because the food is good and I have been before and had tea instead of coffee and it was fine. Spoiling the ship for a hap'orth of tar springs to mind.

Looked a nice place to stop for a break on our way to Whitby, but we had a truly awful cup of coffee. Like lukewarm, brownish water. Also no loo paper in toilets. Staff apathetic.

Called in today for a bacon sandwich and a coffee. As usual, it was excellent. Lots of well cooked bacon and a fantastic dippy egg with a massive golden yolk. The staff are always friendly, well worth a visit if you are on the A64 near York!!

Called in today for the first time. Really impressed. Farmhouse style furniture is very modern and clean as is the kitchen. A good selection of reasonably priced food and proper tea served in a mug. Two meals and four teas all for £12, superb value, well worth driving past other options on the A64.

We always try to stop here when we are on the A64. So far we have never been disappointed. This visit I had the 'meat feast' breakfast special, a sausage, bacon and spam roll with a coffee. Really enjoyed it but you have to be hungry.

Very rarely do we find good gluten free options let alone ones in small family run businesses. This place is amazing, understanding and flexible. Provided us with good food and brilliant service. When we are travelling up this way again we will certainly be visiting.

Stopped here on our way to Scarborough. Plenty of parking avaliable. You can choose to eat inside at the cafe or outside several tables available. Friendly staff to assist you. I had the cheeseburger and hubby had sausage and bacon tcake, we had chips between us and 2 coffees. The food was very nice and tasty and reasonably priced. The toilets are free for customers where you get a coin to operate the gate, for non-customers it's 20p. Lovely place to stop and stretch your legs and if you your dog with you a toilet break for them to.

We stopped off here on Monday 15th April on our way to Primrose Valley in Filey for a holiday and its a great place to stop for a drink and something to eat. We always stop here on our way to Filey as we travel all the way from Preston and takes a long time and this is a great place to stop for a rest and something to eat and drink. We ordered 2 portions of chips and 2 coffees and it was reasonably priced and the chips and coffee were great. This place is great as when you order something from the cafe they give you a token for the toilets so you don't have to pay as non cafe customers have to pay 20p to use the toilets so its great that you don't have to pay to use the toilet if you buy something from the cafe. Nice food and drink at a great price and will stop here again when we return to Filey.

We always call at the Highwayman when travelling to Whitby from Derby. Their bacon and mushroom cobs/baps are seriously good, the staff stay cheery and helpful. We consider our holiday has started when we pull up at the lovely Highwayman.

Whilst travellinh on the A64 to Whitby we decided to stop off here for some breakfast. I can't comment on eating in as we ordered at the take away window. Turnover was quick to say the number of orders being taken. The young lady serving was very polite and friendly. Sausage, bacon, spam sandwhich recommended. Only comment, if it is necassary to pay / get a token to use the external toilet. I'd expect a certain standard.

Went to the snack bar, orders a burger, after 15 minutes I asked what was taking so long , after another 15 minutes it arrived, half an hour I got my burger, must say it was nice, wasn’t busy on my visit, please WHAT was the wait for ,

To be clear this is a busy roadside cafe on the main A64 coast road and as such it offers a great service.

Viajando a Scarborough para el fin de semana, paramos aquí para el brunch y todo estuvo bien. Este es un lugar pequeño y ocupado, con servicio para llevar desde la escotilla o asientos en el interior si está buscando un descanso más relajado. Impecablemente limpio y con mesas y sillas macizas, hay mucha variedad en el menú. Haga su pedido y pague en el mostrador: las bebidas se preparan de manera inmediata para que las lleve con usted y luego las comidas se entreguen en su mesa. Todo está preparado para ordenar, así que es fresco y muy caliente, vale la pena esperar los 10 o 15 minutos. El bloque del inodoro está afuera en el estacionamiento, gratis para aquellos que comen en la cafetería (obtenga una ficha del personal) o 20 p si está haciendo una pausa para un breve descanso. Called in on our way to Scarborough with the grandchildren. The food was great and service although not speedy it was worth the wait. Called in again on our way home. They do great pies and pasties and the sandwiches were fresh and tasty.

Una excelente posición y se pone muy ocupado. Bastante caro para lo que obtienes. Hay una parrilla Toby no muy lejos que ofrece un mejor valor. El servicio era un poco lento cuando estuvimos allí, pero estaba bastante ocupado. Aunque un miembro del personal estaba limpiando las sillas, no las empacaba. Si no estás muerto de hambre, hay una mejor relación calidad-precio no muy lejos. Como un lugar de encuentro conveniente es bueno.

We always go to this cafe when visiting Scarborough as it is a good halfway point. Food is good and fairly reasonable. Would recommend this to all

Stopped off on way to Scarborough and you always get good food and drinks in clean surroundings and today was no different delicious breakfast and hot drinks couldn’t fault it and was spotlessly clean.however had to wait more than 25 minutes and order didn't come altogether but it was a bank holiday and busy

We stopped off at this cafe on Friday 24th August when we was on our way to Filey for a holiday and it is a great way to stop and have a rest as we were travelling to Filey all the way from Preston in Lancashire so it is great to stop on a long journey. It wasn't too busy as it was after dinner time around 3:30 pm so we ordered 3 portions of chips which were very nice and we also ordered 3 teas and 2 diet pepsi's. The service here was great, we was served our order within 10 minutes of arriving and the food was very good. This place is really useful and is in a great location for stopping off for a little rest and something to eat and i would highly recommend a visit to this cafe. The toilets are free if you order food or drink as they give you a token which is great because if you're not a customer you have to pay 20p. I would definitely visit here again in the future.
