Hi tide in Redbridge

I just got home with my a large cod and large portion of chips from Hi-Tide, expecting a satisfying helping to enjoy with my kids. However, upon arriving home and opening the package, I was extremely disappointed. The portion size was minuscule, barely filling the container. To my surprise, the excessive amount of wrapping paper made the package seem much larger than it actually was. Disgruntled, I decided to visit another chip shop nearby. Even their small portion was significantly bigger than the "large" one from Hi-Tide, and the chips themselves were noticeably fresher. To add to the negative experience, the service at Hi-Tide was sluggish. I waited at the counter for at least 3 minutes before being acknowledged by the staff, who seemed inattentive despite me being the only customer waiting to be served. Overall, my experience at Hi-Tide was a low tide of disappointment. I won't be returning anytime soon.

Friendly cosy and high quality fish and chips....not greasey. TWO OF US were served in the restaurant Last week in early April 2024.

I have been going to Hi Tide for over 40 years but the service has deteriorated. They never seem to have what you want and they don’t seem to care. It’s a take it or leave it attitude. I will leave it and find somewhere else to get my fish and chips

Excellent quality fish at reasonable price

Hands down the best fish and chips in the area. Freshest ingredients, crispy batter , fresh tasting fish and the chips are delicious. I have tried numerous fish and chips shops in the area and they have been decent however this place is that level above. Nothing is stodgy it's all fresh and flavoursome. The staff are friendly and always up for a chat, they keep you company as they cook up the fresh fish. Great portions too I don't have any pictures at this point but I'll try and upload later . This is my favourite go to place for fish and chips Lakers in seven kings is my favourite chicken shop. Unique in that it's the best quality and does not taste cheap.

Popped in here for a portion of chips - Cant remember how much I paid but i asked for a small rather than large which was basically one flat tray of chips. Originally when they handed over the chips I thought that they had misheard and had wrapped a saveloy for me by mistake. The chips themselves were great - no complaints there but the portion size for the money was ridiculous. Maybe I should have ordered a large portion instead but the portion sizing was not great for the money. Will not be returning.

Just had the nicest cod chips and mushy peas. The chips were crispy and perfect and the fish cooked to order beautifully. Thank you for great food and service.

Tried the Haddock, Cod and Large Chips, quality of food freshly prepared and tasted good, however like other reviews have stated portion sizes are on the smaller side in comparison with other Fish and Chips Takeaways in and around the area. Service could be a little more friendly !

The best fish and chips by far!

After trying out other rubbish places like mother Hubbard in Gants Hill I realised this place hi tide and serene fish & chips in Gants Hill is Simply one of the best fish & chips around this area ! Highly recommend this place! Well done and keep up the great work! Both this place hi tide and serene in Gants Hill there customer service is above and beyond ! Can’t recommend them both places enough! Can’t wait to return back

Fish and chips were really nice I must admit and the service was good. My only concern was the portion for a large chips which is rather on the medium size but I ordered another portion which made the meal a bit more expensive. In all fairness some people might prefer a smaller "large" portion of chips if they dont want to over eat. I would go back there again for sure but not anytime soon as I am really full right now. A while ago I wrote a bit of a negative review suggesting that HiTide's fish and chips was a bit pricy and nothing special. So It's only fair I write again now. Last night's take away was outstanding. The cod was beautifully flaky in a crispy batter with no greasiness. Chip shop chips can sometimes be bit flaccid but these were crispy with a fluffy inside - perfect. And the portion was huge. Top marks HiTide.

I've been coming to this place for last 25 years. Been let down big time. Ordered a large chips with 2 large cod's. Have given me a small chips! I asked the person you sure that's a large he said that's what it is! I did not expect this from this place as I've expected the service to be good. And never been let down!

Went with family and friends and found the lady who served us very friendly and helpful. We had booked a table as we know that HI-TIDE can get very busy. We had a mixture of fried & grilled fish, everybody really enjoyed the food as it was all cooked fresh and the chips were cooked how we asked for extra well done. Our waitress was very accommodating with our request. Before we left I used the toilet and was also pleased to see how clean it was. Overall experience was excellent and most definitely would recommend this fish and chip shop.

Did you serve me the remnants of the lunch time service? Chips all end pieces, small crisps with no substantial potatoes. Large portion at £4 barely would feed a child. Love to support local business, but not going there again.

Paid £4 for a "large chips" however received a sub standard, extremely small portion of chips. Absolute rip off. Wouldn't go back here.

Horrible, very crispy and crumbly batter soaked in oil. £12 for a large cod which soaked through 6 separate kitchen towels and was still so oily we gave up on and just ate the inside instead. Really disappointed!

I was told today that the chips are fried in the same oil as pork sausages, and other meat products, when asked how long this had been going on, was told that has always been the case. I'm very upset to learn this, and thought we had moved on from those days, but clearly not. Vegetarians and anyone who doesn't eat pork/beef should avoid. I've edited my review because I'm grateful to the person who told me this, because now I can make an informed choice. I wish you all the best for the future, and hope that in the future you may consider frying meat products separately.

Our favourite fish & chips. Wonderful tasty batter & fishes are always fresh. Chips are chunky & crisp outside & yummy soft inside. Staff are always smiling & friendly.

Headed especially to this shop as had heard good things. Finished serving customer in front of me then walked off without saying anything, came back to the counter, then walked off again without acknowledgement. No customer service skills whatsoever

30 minute wait for medium cod and chips go elsewhere if you want good service

Batter was over cooked chips were to hard

Best Fish and Chips in London/Essex. Always been the best chips around hands down but the fish is also on par with the best. I usually get a cod row and a sausage and the better is very good. Not greasy and its cripsy. Steve the owner is a nice guy and if you're in a rush don't tell him you like football as you'll never get away!! Good size Gherkins and well and if you want a treat then have the chicken nuggets, very nice. The restaurant is also nice to eat in as well.

Great quality fish and chips with great service. Cooked well and a good range available. Option of seated restaurant service or take away.

The food is good no doubt however the personality and arrogance of customer service is poor. Portions also are small. If your able to put up if poor customer service then the food is great. For me the whole package matters. Your only as good as your last bill..

Hi tide is my go to place fot fish and chips. Always cooked to order. Great food .

Chips were nice as usual, however me and my wife were put off the counter service. Usually our favourite Chip Shop. Arrived around 2 pm on Saturday 12th April (edited). Clearly asked for 2 small portions of chips. Staff member serving us assumed we wanted Code with this , thus he replied "only have medium and large Cod available". Reiterated saying we only want small chips clearly. That's when the Staff member seemed to get irate as if we said something wrong while tossing a box (assuming we wanted Cod) on the counter at the same time showing his frustration. I understand that the gentleman might be stressed for some other reason or maybe a customer before us annoyed him. However there's no need to express rude behaviour with anybody let alone a customer. We were quite well spoken so fail to understand why Hi-Tide Staff lack the patience or communicate calmly. I pondered whether he may not like Brown people, but I doubt it as we have been before. I understand this is a small business and he might be going through other stresses, but Hi-Tide needs to train their Staff with more patience and passion.

As a northerner, finding a decent fish and chip shop in London is like searching for the holy grail. To the point where I'd almost given hope of finding anywhere half decent. Thankfully Hi-Tide is more than half decent - it's brilliant! Fantastic quality fish, great chips, and all the usual side dishes. A little pricey no doubt for those of us used to northern prices, but top notch quality! Highly recommended!

Always first class. I love having the option to have my fish cooked in matzo meal, even though the batter is always delicious. Staff all polite, friendly and efficient. Ordering by phone and collecting has for us, run like clockwork. Top notch food and service.

Visited Hi-Tide's take away on 5th Dec at 8.40pm,i had ordered and payed by phone, so it was contactless. We had 2 large cod & 1 large chips. I asked for my fish to be well done when i ordered, nice crispy batter crispy chips with a fluffy centre. I can honestly say Hi-Tide never lets me down the food was excellent. The peas in the picture were not from Hi-Tide.

The packaging is recyclable with the exception of the chip trays. These are our only detraction from a 5-star rating. Why use an expanded polystyrene tray when everything else is spot on? Our dogs also endorse Hi-Tide as they are always treated to a battered sausage!

Got a takeaway most recently and the fish is just lovely but really expensive. Just under £13 for Haddock and Chips Chips are good and not greasy at all, my only complaint is there are too many scraggy bits with the chips, some people like this, I don’t! Fish and chips served in a box to takeaway.

Hi-Tide has been around for years and for good reason. They cook the best fish and chips around for miles. They are a traditional chippy, serving freshly cooked, crispy battered fish and the most fluffy, crispy chips you could wish for. Do yourself a favour and head down, you won't be disappointed. Been going here for many years, as a lad with my nan and even to this day when we fancy a takeaway... Hi-Tide is always up there!

I bought chips and battered sausages today and the chips were the best I have had in years! The sausages were delicious too. Friendly staff and an all round pleasant experience, thank you.

Can’t praise HighTide and the staff enough. The fish and chips are absolutely delicious. We missed not being able to get out during lockdown but the being elderly, the owner offered to deliver it to us! It was wonderful after so long. So fresh and crispy, should have 6 Stars!! Littlery had a bit if everything.. great food

Been going here for over 40 years. Staff are brilliant, friendly, and polite. Prices may seem a little high compared with other places, but the quality of the food is well worth it. Family members travel from Newham and further afield just to get their favourite fish and chips. Can't fault Hi-Tide in any way. Lovely people. Excellent service. Was in the Barkingside area, so wanted a bit of lunch. Went to Hi-Tide which has been in Barkingside High Street for over 40 years. Wasn't disappointed the women who served me was very attentive and also friendly. The food was as good as previous visits freshly cooked and hot. I ate from the main menu but they also have a set menu for £10.00.

In Restaurant: Service slow . Fillet of cod is medium in size. Need to specify if you require large at extra cost. Mushy peas were on cold side. Portions , unlike in takeaway, were just about reasonable. Price however was NOT . I also declined a half pint(284 ml) of lager as it was £4.25 or more . Enjoyed the meal but most definitely, overpriced!

So I spent £7 on a so called portion of chips and 2 sausages in batter,I was told chips would be about 5min ,30 seconds later they seemed to wrapped. Got home to a disappointment of a hand full of chips...not impressed

Had the set meal Cod & Chips as usual good quality all be it a little on the small side. (in total meal was over £30.00) However the ice cream to follow was shockingly bad it was almost pure ice . Obviously the cheapest money can buy I mean it was awful. we have been going to Hi Tide for years and the quality of the fish is always good but the ice cream has always been of the lowest standard. we will give it one more try and if no improvement we will find somewhere else to go

Small restaurant but fantastic fish and chips. You must have the set menu, 3 courses for £10.00 really excellent value and great service, if you haven't got time to eat in there is the take away service next door which is the main part of Hi Tide 👍

Rang before going to see if they served gluten free fish and chips they said they would ( usually served Friday and Saturday) accommodate me .very nice to be able to eat same as the family. Excellent friendly service and great gluten free fish and chips . Looking forward to another visit next month

Brilliant best fish and chip restaurant ever been going for years

Coming from a person who rarely eats fish it's the best fish and chips I have had, the fish was very light and fluffy and the chips where good too. Recommend the haddock and the cod superb!

Over prices small Amount for the money they charge.

I had given this place a previous rating of 5 stars because I had cod and chips in the restaurant which was more tasty than most chip shops and the portion was fair. However, I had saveloy and chips for £7.40 in the restaurant which is a rip off but I was expecting a bigger portion. I will never eat in the restaurant again. Although the waitresses are friendly, it doesn't make up for it. The rip off prices don't justify the location where the shop is situated. Definitely a take away from now on if I go back.

Excellent restaurant staff. Portions less than generous in restaurant. Take away large chips portion so small you get more chips in everyone else's small portion. Excellent food, very poor value for money. Edit - I got a message from a friend yesterday saying they were about to leave a review about the miserly portions at High Tide. They saw my own comment and they too will eat elsewhere.

Gluten free fish and chips on Friday and Saturday. I had been craving traditional Fish and Chips for a while, and this did not disappoint.

Gents put in a new stash of chips just for me and my partner just as they were about to close. Great chips, great customer service.

I went in for the gluten free fish and chips today. As there's no cross contamination, it's also suitable for the halal diet; which is difficult to find as most traditional chip shops use the same oil or use the same untensils for their non halal products. My cod and chips were cooked while I waited and I could see that it was cooked separately using separate untensils. The fish and chips were crispy and had a fresh clean taste. We thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a little pricy for the quantity of chips you get but I can't fault them on quality and taste. The customer service is honest and friendly, and we are lucky to have Hi-Tide as our local chippy. I will definitely go back on their gluten free days.

I have to say, I always enjoy my fish n chips here, but confession I do avoid as it’s quite pricey, However as it’s the drive home from work, I thought ok go for it, I asked the wife “what do you fancy she replied not much for me due to me being gluten free so just chips” When I arrived I saw this sign outside (see pic) I rang her back “guess what they do gluten free, ok she said, give me cod”, so I ordered haddock & chips for me plus hers, as I ordered the fella behind counter said” do you want gluten free, I thought wow this is amazing, Anyway I took the food home & the fish & chips were delicious but it was pricey & not very big portions So come on Hi Tide, Increase the portions a bit please, Everyone raves about the food.

On Friday and Saturday nights they have Gluten Free Fish and chips. At last great tasting fish and chips without all the awful side effects! I really enjoyed the gluten free batter ......tasted even better than their regular batter. My husband liked the taste too.
