Wonderful staff and lovely relaxed atmosphere

Great New Year's Eve bash. Food was superb, entertainment was excellent, and service was fantastic as always.

Had a really nice family gathering here, however slightly tainted by some in appropriate facial expressions caught by our group from a staff member, I would emphasise that the majority of staff were attentive and caring. Whilst we may not be part of their 'local clientele', an establishment in this present climate I would suggest needs to make both new and old customers warmly welcomed. Staff should remember before they go on shift that without customers there is no business staying open, and staff who are not mature enough to remember this should reconsider their career working with the public.

Herringbone at Goldenacre - A Festive Feast We visited Herringbone at Goldenacre with friends from the States and had the festive menu—it was phenomenal! The prawn cocktail with Bloody Mary sauce was a fun and flavorful twist, the venison main was exceptional, and the beef brisket stew was incredibly tender. Sticky toffee pudding rounded things off beautifully. The beers and cocktails were fantastic, and everything was presented with care. The staff were outstanding, attentive, friendly, and great with kids, making it a relaxed yet polished experience. The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, with neighborhood charm. Easily one of my favourite spots in Edinburgh!

Have had lovely experiences at the Abbey Hill branch previously. Had hoped for the same here, but unfortunately not the case. Booked a table for 4 plus two high chairs months ago, but when we arrived nothing was set up and they made us feel it was a massive inconvenience to sort it. Menu was to be honest really boring. Ended up defaulting to the burger as the main menu looked dull and stuff you see on a basic pub menu. Despite them offering to bring the toddlers’ food out as soon as it was ready, which as any parent of young children knows is a godsend, we then had to wait 40 min for a simple short order order, but which time the kids were crabby, and all the food arrived at once scalding hot. To top it off, they had a very flat acoustic guitar artist screeching covers of 2000s indie songs over events. Just a massive disappointment

Squeezed us in despite not having a reservation. The food was absolutely delicious, and apparently the wine was too- I was driving so didn't partake. Staff were very attentive and engaging even although they were busy. Will definitely be back.

Visited for the wake of a friend's funeral. The staff were very helpful, amazing food and very attentive. Plenty of spaces to sit.

Just popped in for a drink. What a lovely place with, very nice atmosphere. Servers were all great, especially Olivia... we look forward to eating here next time we are in town.

Fabulous. Was in the area and chose to pop in for a swift glass of wine before heading into town for a shindig. A young man, handsome if I may say, helped me to pick something to my liking and goodness did he do a grand job. The wine was so delightful I had to ask for him for more information, which he produced with much enthusiasm. It is very clear they train their staff well here. Needless to say I had one (or two) more while stayed and, as it happened, a manager I believe began to serve my drinks. The reason I suggest it was a manger is because his knowledge on just about every drink on offer was in depth and thorough. I even dared even to ask for a cocktail and, my gosh, beyond belief.

The food was good quality and the separate vegan menu is great. I'd recommend though that you have the "burger" in a roll....having it in a wrap is a bit strange and makes it seem a bit second class compared to the meat offering.

I celebrated a special day here today with a wonderful and delicious lunch. This restaurant is one of the few unique places in Edinburgh, featuring distinct cuisine, a charming atmosphere, and an inventive menu that sets it apart. I highly recommend it, especially if you're seeking something different from the typical and worn-out cafes.

Have been to Herringbone before for breakfast and drinks but not for evening meal. We should have visited before! The ambiance with the live music welcomed us and then we enjoyed a remarkably enjoyable dinner with excellent service.

Such a great vibe. A welcoming, stylish Bistro with a magnificent bar. They make the best martinis in Edinburgh. Service is always great and we are so lucky to have this gem of a place in Trinity. Fabulous Herringbone.

Above average food for premium pricing

After a nice stroll, it’s good to come to a place with lots of natural light and a good drink selection! Had a cocktail that was like an alcoholic Ribena, absolutely fantastic. The kedgeree was also a must try.

Dull lighting when it gets dark outside. It has limited vegetarian options. The beef burger was tasteless. Difficulty attracting staff attention to order drinks and pay bill. Friendly staff, however.

The people assigned to the service were all very efficient and accommodating and I was surprised by the quality and flavor of the food. Even the coffee was good. It is also a pleasant and very bright place.

5 stars plus! Popped in last minute and everybody was so kind and accommodating. Food is quite unique but will suit everybody’s taste. Ambiance is really nice and modern but warm, and prices are reasonable for this kind of place. They are also dog friendly, which makes it simply ideal! I’ve also been to their North Berwick branch, and the ambiance and service is quite similar, very very good!

Relaxed, great food beautifully presented and wide-ranging drinks menu. Small plate - Kedgeree ... Highly recommended. Sorry no photos this time. Will get some next time!

The best and richest Scottish breakfast I ever ate AND it was vegetarian. Very gentle and friendly service. Highly recommended!

Our server (Guy) was attentive and friendly without being invasive. The atmosphere was really welcoming and the transition between day to night was well done. There was live music that was not overwhelming but felt like a nice undercurrent to our conversation - we even had a quiet singalong at our table! Menu felt slightly limited, given we had a vegetarian in our group and some fussy eaters, although we all found something to eat in the end. Overall, we were really impressed by this bar, which felt very well-frequented and loved by locals - for good reason!

Surprisingly excellent food and tranquil setting. Venison was excellent, sweet potato soup also. Both alcoholic and nonalcoholic beers were tasty. Very reasonable prices. Strongly recommended.

Away from the city center, this place is less crowded and offers more tranquility. The setting is pleasant and the service efficient. The dishes are well presented and taste very good (especially the sweet potato fries!!!!)

Lovely restaurant which uses fresh produce and make meals from scratch. Good atmbience and service. A pleasure to dine here.

I had one of the best drinks I've ever had in Edinburgh here, and the food was equally impressive. I was recommended to try the burger, and it did not disappoint—absolutely delicious! Highly recommend.

Amazing food and great service in an understated, cool atmosphere. I ordered the venison special (pictured) and had an experience like the flashback in the film "Ratatouille." My boyfriend ordered the clam chowder, and that was delicious as well. We'll definitely be back!

Didn't eat but had a pleasant pint in a lively good atmosphere.

The food is good and the staff friendly but the disabled toilet is an issue as the red cord dies not hit the floor and is tucked behind the rail and hidden so if you are injured and hit the floor you cannot get assistance. The manager explained to me that a child had just before played with it and pushed it into the hole behind. He then couldn't take it out. Apparently children do this every single time they come. As the red cord never touches the ground. So do go to restaurant but if disabled check you do not need the toilet before you go even if that's the first setting for breakfast as despite being clean a child will have snuck in. Therefore there is no safe disabled toilet facilities.

Great food and service at a fair price

Ordered fresh orange juice, assured they make it in the restaurant, we were served one from the carton instead. Waitress apologized, she said the staff is new and are unaware of the difference. Sadly we were still charged for the juice despite being served wrong one. Coffee was not the best quality, couldn't taste it. No butter served with toast and no beans with kids breakfast, just meat and bread, the poached eggs were overcooked and looked like boiled eggs. The bill was higher than expected due to high service fee. The place is very nice and music was great in the background but service and food were not up to the standard we expected considering the price.

Food is delicious, and for an average Italian like me, the espresso coffee they make is also very good!

Lovely new menu and the staff are always very accommodating. The cocktail menu is also refreshed on a regular basis and their barman is very competent with new flavours. The decor is pleasant and the restaurant is clean and welcoming. I'd recommend the salmon burger and the parmesan and truffle oil fries with aioli.

Food was tasty and well presented. The cocktails were delicious. The staff were very friendly and very knowledgeable. Would certainly visit again.

I tried starters and I loved the crispy artichoke 🤤🤤 Loved the chowder and my friend had the sticky toffee pudding and she liked it too. The restaurant has good ambiance and musics were good too.

Upper mid place to take a date, solo drink to collect your thoughts, or an after work mingle. Attentive service, excellent bar, prices above average but you get the attention to detail. Fills a very good niche imo.

My main course (gourmet burger) was inedible. Waiting staff didn't question the fact it was left completely uneaten. The taste was just disgusting - bread and chicken tasted burnt. The halloumi salad was also terrible - there's a difference between chargrilled and burnt. Expensive prices for below mediocre food. Won't be back!

I really enjoyed the dinner with three mums friends. I don't eat dairy, so I used the vegan menu and the food was amazing! Nicely balanced, full of flavours and good portions. It was much more filling than I expected. I had mushoom & hazelnut seitan with a side of sweet potato fries followed by dark chocolate ganache. Everything was served in good time without any issues. Staff were lovely and very accommodating with all requests. It's a busy place, but everything seems to be under control. Very welcoming and relaxing. It was on my list to visit for a long time and I'm so glad I finally made it. Highly recommend.

Food here was really good! The steak was cooked well and the parmezan and sauce were great additions to it! We had 4 servers over our visit but they were all helpfull.

Nice bar / restaurant with a really nice atmosphere. Great range at the bar of all types of wines to cater for every taste. Great mix of lagers + beers. Menu for food also catering for all,where possible locally sourced, Extensive choice for people with allergies. Service was quick food was excellent.

A good burger and great canoe fries for the sauces, but service slow from order to food landing on the table.

Quite a disappointing brunch here in December. I got the veggie breakfast and quite a few items were missing without comment from the waiter including halloumi and spinach. The veggie haggis, along with a few other items, looked undercooked & I left it. One of our group was missing an extra egg they’d asked for. It was hard to get the attention of the wait staff to tell them, and to ask for water & condiments. The coffee tasted quite sour. From other reviews it looks like dinner is better. We’ve had similar disappointing breakfast experiences here and it seemed like they were particularly understaffed this time.

Called to book a table as couldn't book online Holly said we could have a high table which was perfect. Served by a waiter from the north betwick restaurant, service was good and food good. Have a lovely lunch!

Absolutely beautiful lunch. Everything about this restaurant is perfect. Great interior, lots of atmospheric Christmas fairy lights, clean restaurant, lovely sharp cutlery, cold fizzy Prosecco, hot, well cooked immensely tasty food. Had the 3 course set menu, the most amazing pork/chestnut stuffing, moist chicken and wonderful jus. Great service, excellent wines, amazing homemade sticky toffee pudding, warm clean toilets. Good value, can’t wait to return!

I knew about The Herringbone for ages but for some reason never made the effort to visit. This was a mistake. The need for a venue at short notice during the tail end of the lockdown eventually had me place a booking. It's a good time to point out how easy the website booking system was and reassuring the process. Long story short; I've been back many times since. It's great The staff are friendly and savvy. Despite their best efforts it's the food that wins. The menu from the Herringbone is fairly expansive, and they have a vegan menu. I've been working thorough the main menu and while I've still not made it in for breakfast, everything else has been gorgeous. The chicken laksa, the hake, the salmon burger and even the smashed avocado on sourdough! I know, that last one makes the place sound hipster. I don't think that's a bad thing, but the Herringbone is far too friendly and open to be in any one niche. I think there's something here for everything unless you're looking for a sports pub. This is a gastro pub, not really a watering hole, but you could easily call it a restaurant too. Strongly recommended. [November 23: New owners, newly redecorated and the food still great. Menu tweaked rather than reimagined. I visited on day two of the reopening, it was busy but not crowded and the kitchens a little slow. ]

1st night in Edinburgh, we went here to celebrate my 58th Birthday Delicious Food, Great Service what more could ou ask for?

Food quality is relatively good, portions on smaller side. Parmesan and rocket salad served with vinegar, which is not mentioned on a menu. Not a fun of vinegar, therefore would not have ordered if I only have known. Nobody checked our table if all was fine with food.

Booked our places a week or two ahead. We've been before so happy to return 🙂 Good food ...we weren't looking for anything fancy also all had a variety of burgers Good beer selection too 🍻

The Herringbone at Goldenacre is one of our go-to places in Edinburgh, the food/drinks are great and the service is friendly and professional - highly recommend going there!

Friendly patient staff. Delicious food. Very busy and noisy but it was a Saturday evening.

Nice atmosphere and live music. Good food. Service was mixed - young staff all nice and friendly but older male staff member not so much.

Underwhelmed by the experience. Service was fine - lad worked hard and was really nice. Menu pretty limited. Chips were good but side of Mac n cheese had no cheese taste at all. Steak slices were fine but that’s hardly a science. The plum posset was very strange. Not sweet and tasted like unsweetened plums in a natural yoghurt with raw oats. Pretty awful. Salmon burger fine but not great. Went a couple of months after it first opened and the experience was terrible. Food atrocious and service worse. It’s doing better but it’s probably still in business by virtue of the catchment area - Inverleith and Trinity. Seems folk go mostly to drink with food a kinda afterthought. Try it but don’t expect any great shakes.

Very good main course. However extremely disappointed with sweet. We ordered the mango sorbet. After waiting 15 mins for them to arrive, we had to remind waitress of our order. 5 mins later they arrived- one dollop(scoop) of sorbet in a small glass. So disappointing, very poor presentation and certainly not worth the £4 each glass. I would not order again.

new place in Edinburgh, with light airy atmosphere. Food was decent but not superb and pretty standard for Edinburgh. Portions were small for the price. The biggest disappointment is the service. I guess you don’t have to be an attentive server if 10% is already added to the customers bill, which I find rude. Tipping is based on the service given, not an additional surcharge. Here are some Examples: 1) we sat inside 2 meters from the bar/wait station. We sat for 15 minutes before we were greeted and that was only until I forcibly made eye contact with someone behind the bar- which was basically what I had to do to get someone’s attention for more water, dessert, the bill, two-bite check back to see if the food was cooked properly or if we wanted additional food as we simply ordered a selection of small bite dishes , etc. we waited so long for the dessert , I just got tired of the whole experience and asked for the check…then another girl came hurriedly over finally with the ready made pastry and said “sorry for the wait”. The pastry (think flapjack with fruit) was literally sitting under a glass dish within arms reach of our table, but still took 20 minutes to bring. I’m now waiting an additional 20 minutes for the bill and I think I will have to ask again. The place is not full, only the outside seating, so I can’t imagine the issue….just seems like VERY poorly trained wait staff. Average price for a standard main is £18. We didn’t order alcohol. I give this place another year before it goes under. The atmosphere won’t carry over through winter, with higher priced standard fare. I think the appeal is simply great outside seating, which is a premium in Edinburgh. I still haven’t gotten the bill writing this review so we’re now 26 mins waiting for the check I’ve already asked for. Not coming back. Update: after I again stared down staff, I can see a light went on in the staff member’s head (who appeared to be the manager as she had a different top) and she realised, like so many before her, she forgot to bring the check I asked for earlier. In this time of economic uncertainty, high costs, the one thing that doesn’t cost extra is great service.

Fantastic service, great food, really nice setting and location. To be seated indoors, definitely book ahead. Really easy to book online. Wine list and cocktails are really great. I enjoyed an Oolong Fashioned. Delicious. 3 courses plus drinks really reasonable for Edinburgh too. Will be back.

I met a friend for lunch and we had some yummy cocktails and a few plates to share. Great menu with an amazing choice of foods. Great atmosphere, pity about the rain so we went inside. Overall a great place but on the pricey side

Have been many times in past, this time food was nice but not usual standard. It has become very expensive and the £6 to £20 is very misleading. In essence we paid £138.00 for one shared nibbles, 3 burgers, 3 ice creams, and 5 drinks two of which were a small beer and a diet coke. We will think twice before returning.

Visited to have dinner with family. Waitress seemed out of her depth . Place was only half full but we had to constantly try and get staff attention. Chairs very uncomfortable No noise dampening , soft furnishings may have helped, very noisy Wine poured - spilled on table then put bottle on top ! Food arrived Missing items- quality of food ok but overpriced for what we had Asked for more mayonnaise, never arrived Tried to order dessert but couldn't get waitress attention , despite her saying she'd be back shortly. She never appeared. Ended up getting bill and leaving They added service charge which we asked to be removed. Staff admitted this shouldn't have happened and gave a refund. We won't be back Such a shame, as its a nice spot and we could really do with a restaurant in this area

Have been several times. Food is decent though overpriced. Service is usually good, but comically bad on most recent trip. Apparently arriving 30 minutes before the kitchen closes (and 2.5 hours before the venue closes) entitles you to barely disguised sarcastic remarks, plates slammed on the table, and the bill being thrown at you while the waiter talks to another group. Left as soon as we could and will not be returning.

We took a friend here for lunch, and ordered two small plates each. However the soups all arrived at the same time as the other dishes - shame. The food was good, the service excellent, and the price very reasonable at £41.80. However they add on a service charge of 10% which I'm sure you could have deleted - but we don't, do we. I'd prefer to see it included in the cost of the dishes. For convenience (there aren't many restaurants in this area of Edinburgh) we ate here as a couple, and enjoyed a salmon burger and a halloumi and avocado salad. They were excellent value at £27, but the house white (a relatively low alcohol one) was quite expensive for a house wine at £24. Overall a good dining experience.

Very pleasant all round bistro. Lunch was all very good and served quickly, plenty of staff were on and there was no long waits. Nice busy casual atmosphere.

Coffee was small and not the best quality. Far better places available. Service was ok but lacked any real warmth or passion. Place itself was nice enough and clean.

This restaurant is local to us. It’s always busy. We had lunch - Chowder and burger for my husband, pear and blue cheese salad and salmon for me. We enjoyed our food but the presentation of my salad was disappointing. The pears were discoloured and the salad mixed instead of dressed.

Some places are good and some are on a different level : D Will be definetly coming back here again and again 🥳
