Went last Xmas Eve as a treat. Was appalled. The sprouts were undercooked, not to be confused with el Dante. Tasteless dinner sadly. No flavour. Not great. You go to these places paying good money expecting a superb experience but sadly not. I need to stay home and cook top food that could be served to any experienced chef and applauded

We stayed a two minute walk away from this fabulous pub/restaurant in the pretty and peaceful village of Malpas so The Heron was our local for a sadly short time. Firstly the view of the river from the covered verandah and from the windiws is just stunning even on a dull Oct eve. The welcome from the front of house team was warm and friendly. The decor was tasteful and there was a buzzing atmosphere with full tables which was surprising fir a Monday. The food: Yum Yum Yum My hubby loved his flatiron steak, cooked medium rare to perfection and juicy. My cod was gorgeous and the fish platter was stunning. We shared two trifles as we were full but couldn't resist and they were so delicious. Just a nice size serving and just the right amount of sherry. Really lovely place, well worth a visit. I would stay in Mlpas again for many reasons and The Heron Inn is right at the top of those reasons. Lucky locals!

A contemporary pub with a good range of drinks. Lovely staff. The attention to detail and food are not as consistently good as they used to be, so sometimes the value isn't quite there since it's expensive. If you can sit outside, the views across the river are great.

We have been here three times in three different years; seems that we must have missed all the bad things people have written about The Heron. Great view, very pleasant interior and, as ever, good attentive staff. Local produce from sea and land, as indicated on a blackboard. Well presented, as you an see from the photos. A nice relaxed atmosphere. The only challenge is getting there as parking is very difficult -though not impossible - and the bus times are unhelpful.

Great pub in a very quaint hide away just outside thw city centre. Located with views over the bay, the pub is fantastic We ate in, 1 X Paella (Vegetarian) and 1 X meat & fish Paella Great sized portion, plenty of Prawns, muscles, monkfish, chicken and chorizo on the non vegetarian dish. Could probably do with a slight reduction in size as I couldn't have a pudding - no room... Value you for money, I was expecting it to cost slightly more, in fact we would have paid more for the meal Great service, great atmosphere to match. We will visit again when we come back to the area The only downside is the reduced amount of parking, if you're going to visit the Heron inn, park a short walk from the venue and walk in, the walk back will help afterwards.

Setting is lovely, service good - staff were friendly. The food was fine. Peaceful… until the awful, continuous high-pitched yapping of a dog that seemed to live upstairs in the inn started. And it would not stop. Really put us on edge and I would have to be offered a lot of money to consider sitting through that racket ever again. Amazingly incongruous with the setting.

If you're visiting the locale and looking for good restaurants to visit, The Heron Inn will almost certainly come up on a Google search. There's no doubt that the views are beautiful - but I always believe that the restaurants with the best views tend to serve the worst food. And sadly I was proved right again. Everything was sub-par pub food, took ages to come and the parking is a bugger.

After a long drive trip, you call them if they would still serve if you come few minutes later than the official kitchen closing time, they accept and make a reservation for you. You drive 12km extra longer to drive in. You are welcomed friendly, seated and even receive a Menu and when you are ready to order they tell you that they don’t serve anymore! A lesson for the management; don’t accept the reservations of the people who are calling you and telling that they are arriving at 21:10!

Despite not appearing to be particularly busy, the wait to receive the 4 roasts we ordered was far to long. When they finally arrived the plates were cold, as were many of the elements on them, especially the roast potatoes. We immediately complained to the guy who served us, but rather than being apologetic/sympathetic, he was rude and rather abrasive, constantly huffing and puffing as he took the meals away to be replaced. 5 minutes later he was back with fresh meals and a slightly improved though still rather condescending attitude - however he did take the time to apologise about the cold roasts, which apparently had been plated and left under heaters far to long before being served. We obviously accepted his apology and tucked into our now much warmer roasts. Having finished our main course we ordered 3 sweets, one being a trio of ice creams. We waited almost 40 mins for the sweets to appear, despite chasing them up twice with the waitress who took our order, then when they finally arrived with our original huffy, puffy waiter one of the ice cream scoops was the wrong flavour. When we immediately and politely pointing this out, Mr Huffy Puffy literally snatched the ice cream away and took off for the kitchen, mumbling and grumbling under this breath. The ice cream was replaced, again by what almost seemed a different person than the one who'd just snatched it away 3 minutes previously - it was almost like a return to the kitchen was needed for him to chill out and recompose himself, before being able to face customers with the temerity to complain when things weren't right. The bill came to £125, so this was not a cheap birthday lunch for our daughter and grand children. The whole experience took over 2 hours and all in all, it was not one that any of us enjoyed, meaning it would be impossible for us to recommend this venue....in fact we'd probably advise people to steer clear.

Inedible steak and pathetic and condescending response. I went here for a special occasion lunch with a dear friend who had suggested the venue. The arrival of the wine we ordered was slow and the waiter apologised, which was fine. The water we ordered was very slow to arrive and the waiter said he thought it had been forgotten, which was not a big deal. I ordered a flat iron steak and asked for it to be cooked medium-rare. The waiter said medium-rare was my only option anyway; 'That's the way its's cooked'. The steak was so tough and full of sinews. Even with a steak knife most of it was impossible to cut through. When a waiter came to check if it was ok, I said yes; naively in hindsight, but I had only just started the meal. Also I didn't want to embarrass my friend who had suggested the venue, by making any big deal of it. Anyway, it became apparent and my friend realised the steak (£25) was genuine inedible so I called over a waiter to discuss it. I showed him how impossible it was to cut through the meat and he said 'Gosh! Yes!' and immediately took it away. Another member of staff came to the table and said he would remove the price of a glass of wine from the bill (!). I explained I felt this totally inadequate, but he said that was the best I was going to get because I had said the food was alright, and that I had eaten most of the meal. As you can see from the photo I had to leave at least three-quarters of it, because I couldn't cut through it. So, I had an inedible meal, a paltry offer of recompense, a response from the waiter that was not true, embarrassment because of this, and a 'meal' consisting of one-quarter of the toughest steak I have ever been offered, and about one-third of a portion of fries. Oh, and some lettuce. I would have accepted the situation with the food if the response had been handled properly. It definitely was not; far from it. I emailed the venue to explain the situation and my disappointment. I received no reply. I must make it clear that I did not ask for another meal (who would?!) and the price of the glass of wine which was deducted was for a medium size glass. I believe this and all other review sites are there for honest comment, good or bad. I believe the owner and staff would do well to accept criticism graciously.

Delightful experience. We stopped in for lunch. I had the beer battered cod with chunky chips. My partner had the mussels and my son the calamari. All were perfectly prepared. The mussels are sourced locally within just a few miles. So brought in fresh daily. The calamari was tender. It's not rubbery the way it can so easily turn out if not cooked properly. My sister arranged a family lunch with our mum for Easter Monday. Menu looked ok but very seafood heavy and on the pricey side. Was really busy on arrival so struggled to park. Nothing venue can do about that but something to be aware of if you don’t know the area. Ordered drinks, most arrived quickly but had to chase a pot of tea twice - eventually arrived after our food. As mentioned, very seafood orientated which wouldn’t be my choice. I ordered the fish finger sandwich which was £12 and upgraded to add chips so my 8 year old could share (nothing on the kids menu she wanted). Fish fingers were cold on arrival and devoid of flavour. Smothering in tartar sauce helped. Chips were however excellent. Mum had small scampi & chips which she was happy with other than half the plate being peas. Niece had a bowl of cheesy chips. Whilst the chips are good, I do baulk at £7 for a pretty small portion. Sister had GF cheese roll. Again, £10 for a roll, cheese and small amount of salad leaves is excessive. Staff were nice enough, clearly very busy, hence the missing tea and no check in to see if everything ok. Based on the pricing, I’d expected much more and was sorely disappointed. Doubt very much that I’d bother going again.

Booked a while ago for Easter Sunday dinner and so excited, perusing the delicious menu days before. What a disappointment… the food was definitely average. Hubby had the mussels… apart from one good size mussel, the rest of bowl were small and tasteless. I had the roast pork, good size portion but again fairly tasteless and the veg had definitely been sitting most of the day. Cauliflower cheese was overcooked, stodgy and needed a lot of salt and pepper. In fact left most of it (unheard of in our house!) Yorkshire puddings tough and bland, roast potatoes soft and overcooked. The kids had scampi which we thought would be fresh, and chips but sadly it wasn’t. The peas were awful… overcooked and with chewy bite to them, and the tartare sauce had obviously been sitting out in individual pots as it had the firmer/discoloration on the top. Had heard so many good things about this place. Sadly, will not be rushing back.

What can I say. Went for breakfast for our son’s birthday : Initially the sausages & hogs pudding under cooked , bacon was cold and the “poached eggs” were like squash balls . We asked for gluten free on one breakfast . Hah what a joke . Told no gluten free sausages and the eggs were poached in water with vinegar in it. We assume MALT . The only thing supposedly gluten free was the roll! If you threw it at the wall it would have made a dent. TIP: gluten free sausages are better 95 % meat & cost the same as cheap ones. If you offer gluten free make sure you HAVE gluten free. We had to send the first plates back , got second plate after son had had enough. Totally over cooked .. couldnt really eat it. Only paid for the tiny bit we ate and the drinks. Coffee was good. Beware of this place it’s not as it seems other than the view Never again!

I really feel that I must write this review because of how bad our meal was on Sunday 10/03/24, Mothers Day. Obviously a very special day with my daughter, son-in-law and grandson. My daughter and I ordered the roast beef. .. and unfortunately had to send it back , which was so disappointing! Why?. The beef was so tough, it was topside and should have been cooked slowly so I’m guessing it wasn’t. The vegetables were almost completely raw. The sauce on the cauliflower cheese was thin and watery. The gravy was unthickened pan juice swimming in fat. We chose something else from the menu but by the time it arrived the other two diners had finished eating. The most disappointing part of this was that no one from either kitchen or management came to apologise!, and we also noticed that others returned their roasts. I must mention that our young lady server was extremely good and very professionally dealt with the situation. S. Macgregor.

I cannot fault our visit, the service from the moment we walked through the door to the point we left was exceptional so much so that I've come on trip advisor to write my first ever review! As it was a dry day we decided to sit outside and during our visit 3 separate members of staff (one of which I presume was the head chef) checked we were warm enough and mentioned that they have over head heating they could switch on if we needed it. We only had a light lunch of soup, chips, scotch egg and mussels to share between the two of us and every dish was beautifully presented and really enjoyable. We timed our visit perfectly with a photoshoot happening of some of their dishes for, I believe the chef said, A Taste of the West magazine, we were very kindly offered to taste them when they had finished and again it was all so delicious, I can see why they have been selected to showcase their food. The sticky toffee pudding is to die for and I will be returning even if its just to grab a quick slice of it! Such a shame and hopefully just a bad night - but very disappointing.

Had an excellent full Cornish breakfast this morning at the Heron. Really crispy bacon, two sausages, scrambled eggs, hash browns, baked beans, and hog’s pudding. Plus tea and toast. £12. Excellent quality and great view of the water.

I am not one for writing reviews but this is how bad my experience was at The Heron Inn today. We are a local couple and booked for a lovely New Year's Eve roast with our dog. It is such a beautiful location despite the wind and the rain and it is such a shame that the food and the service let the whole experience down. We were greeted by a friendly Italian man, who we assume was management but whilst we were waiting to be seated the staff member at the bar sorting all the drinks was loudly moaning about how busy he was and had been to another staff member - it wasn't the most welcoming of experiences. The purpose of me and my partner booking and not going elsewhere was the try the Sunday roast. We both ordered the beef roast and it was the worst roast that I have ever tried...and I have tried a lot! You needed a chainsaw the cut through the beef (I am not even joking). The vegetables were also undercooked - I like Al dente but this was taking it a bit far. The Yorkshire pudding was overdone and was like cutting through cardboard. A neighbouring table ordered the beef after us and she asked the waitress for a tougher knife to cut through the beef! the waitress replied I'll get you a sturdy steak one...no apology or asking to return the meal/change for a different meat. No staff member checked in and asked if all was ok with the meals...we told the staff member on leaving...it was quite a quick exit after the standard of food served of how tough the meat but there was no sincere apology and she said she would pass it on to the kitchen. It is such a shame as it is a beautiful pub in an idyllic location but we will not be returning until things drastically improve and will also not be recommending any time soon.

This was our third visit to The Heron Inn. Warm welcome on arrival but... The menu is not extensive yet both of the dishes that we chose were unavailable including the "catch of the day". It's always disappointing when the waitress tells you that dishes are unavailable after you've set your heart on them...a simple "this and that are off" when handing out the menus is much kinder. We chose a small fish and chips which came with a miniscule portion of fish. Our other main was the burger. The bacon was nigh on raw (unrendered white fat) and the burger itself dry and overcooked. The waitress did ask if everything was OK when I requested the bill. I politely explained the above as I always think feedback at the time is most honest. She said she would pass my comments to the chef. She came back with the bill (full price, no gesture of good faith) which I paid in full. Such a shame as it is a 40 minute drive for us to get to The Heron Inn. I think it unlikely that we'll bother again.

Food was delicious, staff were really friendly and attentive, there was a small miscommunication with our order which was remedied with no problem whatsoever - really enjoyed our evening and will return - highly recommend the fish platter

Was very much a restaurant rather than a pub but we all loved it for our Christmassy meal. Waiting staff were brilliant and food was great. Highly recommended.

Treated ourselves to Sunday lunch here as it is one of our favourite places. We have been many times over the years and it has been consistently good, however on this occasion.... Food arrived luke warm, measly veg portion of one parsnip & a couple of carrots served up on each plate with an uninspiring seasonal veg dish on the side. Pale roast potatoes. Food sent back & reheated which resulted in dried out inedible veggie nut roast & a missing Yorkshire pud...even the one solitary parsnip had gone awol!! Too tired & fed up of waiting, we ate up and left, hungry & disappointed. We have avoided going back & judging by the reviews, things haven't changed. What on earth has happened here?

Great place for a bowl of soup and a beer /coffee after walking our dog. Fantastic views. Beer wasn't the best (Tribute) pipes need cleaning as a little flat with yeast floaters.... But the food and service great

Great value for money for the Christmas dinners, better than it is in general. Very tasty. Okay beer. Great spirits and wine selection.

My daughter and I had gone to stay inTruro for a couple of nights to do Xmas shopping. Thought we would start by having a nice meal for a treat. She said Heron Inn looked good from the reviews. We shared a nasty humous and bread starter. Worst humous we have ever had. Then she being vegan was recommended the tempura vegetables which after a while she found to be very greasy and soggy. I had scampi and chips with hard peas served on a cold plate. How they can jusify £17.50 for deep fried veg is beyond me. They wonder why hospitality trade struggles. Definitely will not be returning.

We spend weekend in Truro every December for last 8 years.Have eaten here before. We ate here Friday evening at 7,excellent service and food.We also booked to eat here on the Saturday,5 as no later available. Not shown to our table just told it was "down that end".No steak,so we had chicken burger,Brill,Paella, and beef bourginon. My fries were warm, beef was stodgy, not at all like the previous evening.Desserts, limited, only sorbet available was raspberry, out of large select.Waited ages to receive our food, even longer to order desserts.Very disappointing.Christmas party bookings seem to take presidency over "normal" meals

We had a wonderful time at The Heron Inn for our family Christmas meal. The three courses from their Christmas set menu was delicious, and the service was excellent. A very enjoyable experience that we would recommend for special occasions and family gatherings.

A fabulous place to stop and enjoy the view. The Heron was warm and welcoming on a cold December afternoon. We really enjoyed the blazing log fire and friendly staff, who laughingly assured us it never snows in Cornwall..,..the day before a snow blizzard. We didn't dine here as such but enjoyed a couple of drinks with some cheesy chips all of which were good, before walking back to Truro. If it had been just a little warmer We would have loved to sit outside on the lovely terrace overlooking the river but we look forward to that on another visit

Fabulous location in St Ives! Good points - good location, serve food, sky TV, Staff are hard working it’s a busy place. Not so good points - the food is prepared so when it’s brought out they bring you piping hot gravy to warm the food up -veggies are re heated and actually some of them were hard. In St Ives everyone has a dog as do we, they have the smallest area in the pub for owners & dogs 4 tables and a bench area. There were lots of us waiting to eat but not enough tables for the dog owners - lots of empty tables elsewhere in the pub - i feel that they should extend the seating area to dog owners. It’s a shame that they are not more friendly to dog owners as it really is the only place you can get a roast dinner on a Sunday in St Ives.

Conveniently situated next to the highway. Plentiful free parking. Super-friendly and helpful staff. Rooms are spacious. Comfortable beds. Nice bathrooms. The biggest downside was awful wi-fi. The free version was poor and the payable 'ultimate' version no better. So much as we saw many pluses, if we have no wi-fi we can't work, so can't really come back.

We have been having our Sunday lunch quite regularly. As our last experience in St tudy changed management and had different ideas What the ship has for us is the vegetarian Wellington, not found anywhere in the local area. What the ship lacks (in the retro pub refurb in inverted comers ) is the friendly welcome and a feeling of a local establishment that leaves it's welcome where it matters hospitality and food.
