Hermitage Road Restaurant & Bar in North Hertfordshire

I came in today for the first time. I had a lovely warm, soft bagel. It was quite busy but the atmosphere was very relaxed and I loved the giant sofas. Although I didn't have my dog I was glad to see it was dog friendly and could have happily spent an hour or so here.

Tip notch restaurant. Fine food and good portions! Had a great meal here, will be recommending this place and looking to return. Thanks for a great experience we loved being sat up in the large booth!

Nice enough but I don't think they've thought the seating thru - difficult to find a seat that's separate from other people, but not perched on a high stool.

Nice atmosphere and really nice surroundings. I only had a black coffee as I only drink skimmed milk and disappointingly the don't have it. Lovely dog friendly space though.

We've not been to the hermitage for a few years now, and we tried it again last week and had an evening meal. We weren't disappointed. Food is still good, excellent service, and still a great place to go.

Had a meal here tonight for my sons 30th birthday, with people we've not seen for a long time. We were a few minutes late, but we sat for an hour before the order was taken for our meals. Then we were told that they wanted the table back after another hour. The bill was presented although we wanted dessert, and didn't get to have the birthday cake. Had to leave drinks unfinished. Won't ever visit again.

Came here whilst visiting a friend who lives in the area. Lovely building and interior. Nice coffee and friendly staff. Will definitely visit again.

Very clean restaurant with industrial feel but cozy decor! Loved the ballroom floor! The food was beautifully cooked. I chose from the set lunch menu - calamari and the steak. I do not normally order steak as I am usually disappointed, however this was outstanding and I’m so glad I chose it! A lovely experience and would highly recommend!

Average,expensive, wouldn't return for a meal but possibly for a drink nothing special.

The atmosphere and general "ambience" of this place is lovely. The decor is stylish too. However, the food is nothing special. The fish dish we had still had bones in it, and it just felt average. The service and staff, though, were good. I don't think I will be rushing back there for a meal - I think there are better places locally that provide more value for money.

Went here for dinner on Saturday and it was delicious. Our waitress was lovely, the food was yummy and we had an absolutely wonderful bottle of rosé to go with it. I'll be back next time I'm in Hitchin!

Service was excellent, our waitress, Charlotte, was wonderful and attentive, and did something lovely, and unprompted, for my friends birthday that we were celebrating. Would absolutely recommend

My recent experience at the Hermitage left much to be desired, especially considering I’m a frequent customer who has had only positive experiences prior to this. We were excited to enjoy a leisurely evening with cocktails and desserts, and although we met the £30 minimum spend in no time, the staff made it clear that our table was only ours for 45 minutes instead of 2 hours that was booked. Spending around £110 within this timeframe was perhaps expected by staff (considering staff warning us 3 times that we had a “minimum spend” of £30) and instead of feeling appreciated for our contribution to go above and beyond the “minimum spend”, we were rudely rushed off our table. Told twice by staff “you have to leave, we need your table” despite making a 2 hour booking online and the restaurant being half empty at 7:45pm. If we had been able to have our table the full 2 hours we would have spent considerably more and easily doubled our bill. To add to the disappointment, we weren't offered an alternative table in the bar area to continue our cocktail night. While I understand the need to manage table turnover, the approach felt unwelcoming and unfair considering our 2 hour booking. A more customer-centric approach, considering there was nothing disclosing we could not book for pudding and cocktails, would have significantly improved our experience. We won’t be returning again, to our disappointment considering the great food and drinks. The manager on shift was patronising and unpleasant regarding our restricted table time, but the waitress was sweet and friendly despite the awkward situation.

The vegan options are honestly disappointing. It feels as though vegans are disregard with basic options which are not good value. I would love to see the next revised menu with interesting and intriguing vegan options, as many of my family and friends love the herm, but as a vegan I am not excited about any of the food available. I have given the 5 stars I feel the hermitage deserves, from the service and atmosphere, with the hope of an enticing vegan menu in the future. Update. The new vegan options are still disappointing.

Very expensive place... Service & atmosphere was great, but the food wasn't worth the money. Curry had to be returned for reheating, and the steak just wasn't great.

This is our 4th time dining here, and I'm glad we did. We went all out this time: oysters, calamari, starters, mains, and cocktails. Really good price, I thought aswel, £143 including service charge at 12.5% Calamari was fresh and crispy, cooked perfectly. The oysters were amazing with the Vietnamese dressing. I had scallops to start, although I felt they could have done with a touch more seasoning. My wife had the this chicken dish to start in a wonderful Korean style dressing. Best I have had!! Steak was cooked perfectly. I'd recommend getting the Brocoli with garlic and lemon. Cooked perfectly and just the right balance between the lemon and garlic. And the professionalism and respect from the staff really makes the whole experience worth every penny!!!

Overall, we enjoyed the restaurant with its friendly staff and pleasant atmosphere. We had Sunday Roast. It’s exceptional. The only critique was the gravy was a bit thick and salty (personal opinion), but aside from that, the place was spotless.

Just the right place to hold a big birthday bash which my nephews gave me for my 80th birthday. (13 adults plus 3 children)

Went for a pre-booked set 3 course menu. Food was amazing and staff were great and always available. Seemed very busy for a Saturday night, so probably worth booking in advance!

Hiulia was our waitress and she was absolutely AMAZING!!! She was super friendly and had some great suggestions as we are quite indecisive when it comes to food. She was also quite good with suggestions when I told her I was lactose intollerant. The place is very clean and tidy and the food is pretty good aswell.

The atmosphere is lovely and I think this is one of Hermitage's selling point. The food itself does not justify the cost. It's usually a hit & miss but what they didn't seem to miss on most recently was putting a lot of garlic on their dishes. Our scallops were served room temp and undercooked. The apple juice was out-of-date-- or at least, that's what it tasted like as per 2 adults and 1 child on the table. This was replaced promptly but is still alarming. The staff are a mix of young, vibrant hosts. The toilets are always clean and well-stocked. We like Hermitage and we've dined here about 5 times now but it almost usually feels like a lottery whether you catch the service on a good day or not.

Gluten free burger bun was hard and could not be eaten. I suspect it had been over microwaved from frozen. Informed waitress who apologised.

The Korean chicken starter was very tasty. Nice vibes and very high ceilings. Nice venue.

The decor and vibe of this place was the most appealing. The food an anti climax (desserts by far were the best) Starter - it was supposed to be a king prawn cocktail, they said they were out of king prawns but will instead give me a huge portion of little prawns. The portion was average and starter basic therefore overpriced for what I was given. Mains - crab linguine. If you like garlic then this dish is for you. The crab was flaked but barely visible and I could hardly taste it especially with the overpowering garlic. Friends had pork belly rib which was extremely tasty, full of flavour and the meat was tender Dessert - the fried salted caramel ice cream special was amazing. And the pavlova was perfectly chewy and soft. Desserts a winner

The smell of the food being given to the customers were gross. It made me feel cross. My friends ordered food and again i was horrified. The smell was so strong.

Very nice meal, especially the vegetarian curry was great, but of course dessert was too.

First time visiting and loved it, hopefully will be back.

Lovely environment and service. Perfect place to take my Mum for a Birthday Brunch. My only suggestion would be, invest in Dairy Free alternatives? As someone with a Dairy Allergy, some Dairy Free butter would have been lovely with the Mushrooms on Toast? No other problems, my mum and family loved their breakfast! The staff where very friendly and accommodating, I loved my Iced Oat Latte. Thank you

The best food I've ever eaten in a restaurant. Fresh, delicious, beautifully presented. Large portion. I felt special on the date because the place is very cozy, beautiful and atmospheric. I also had the pleasure of tasting drinks from the bar. Also delicious. I wholeheartedly recommend the Hermitage Rd Bar Restaurant. The food is worth the price it is delicious. Service slow. When ordered food pork was white and dry roast potatoes too soft. 10 of us in for double birthday When 9 meals arrived by the time we were nearly finished the last one came out after we reminded staff then they had to take it back as it was not completed.

I took my friend to the Hermitage today for lunch and we both came back and was unwell. We also have felt sick ever since. The only thing we consumed the same was the Prosecco (1 glass) and coffee and both had same symptoms. I did call to let them know, one to make sure no one else consumed the same thing and two as very unhappy that this happened to a meal a paid for friend’s birthday. Unfortunately have had no response from voicemail which I am dissatisfied with. Not even an apology. My friend was also suppose to go out tonight for her birthday but still feels unwell from lunch, so she is now not able to go. Big shame as heard great things about the Hermitage but not a great experience. (I had no Google account, so has been done via my husbands account).

me and my bestie came for nibbles and drinks and everyone was amazing. dan and elainna (not sure how to spell her name?) were so hospitable and welcoming, the atmosphere was heightened because of them. they made us feel so cared for and welcome at the herm, we will be back again and again just for them!

Elana gave me and my friend such a brilliant service tonight, really professional and also super lovely :) a big thankyou to dan aswell at the bar who was chatty and talkative and made us delicious drinks! I am here every friday and i’m never disappointed!!

I ducked in here to escape the hustle and bustle of the street. Clamor of dining entered my ears and the aroma of a café graced my nostrils. I decided to eat and grab some coffee. The lady who took my order was very nice, I ordered a BLT and an americano. I choose to take a seat outside after I grabbed my americano. The espresso was excellent as I acclimated back into the business of the street. My food was brought to me and I dug right in. The bagel was decadent and chewy. It was perfectly complimented by the very fresh tomato and crisp equally as fresh lettuce. The bacon was salty and easily bitten through making this an excellent BLT. What a great local eatery! I will be back!

The decor is very classy and the bar is busy with staff but nobody actually serving plus those serving are inexperienced and ignore first come first serve rule. As for the restaurant the menu is lacking in traditional options and is very expensive but service is much better.

Excellent new menu, it's not enormous, but a great selection. Brilliant food, fantastic service and great venue. Chairs are comfortable and there is no rush. Coravin wine is an excellent touch in addition to a great wine list. We had a fantastic evening again! We just keep going back. Dogs allowed in cafe and in the bar upstairs 🥰

As a group of friends 10 of us had Sunday lunch. Service was OK, to start with. We had to wait a while for main courses and when they arrived they were just about warm, almost cold. We tried to get someone to sort it out but struggled. We started and put up with it. One dish served in a metal dish, was also cool. Some ordered desserts which tool nearly 30 minutes to arrive. Overall, over three hours to get two courses. It took a lot of effort to get some recompense for the issues. Very disappointing as we had a good experience on the previous occasion and considering the cost, really puts you off wanting to going back to this restaurant.

Amazing place! Great atmosphere with industrial decor. Good choice of food specially fish and sea food. Zodiac cocktails were fantastic. My libra drink was based on gin, loved it. Everything cooked perfectly and looked very classy. 100% coming back there for a dinner. Even bathroom was beautiful. Highly recommend to everyone!

Attended a private function recently. It’s the first time I’ve visited the Herm, and I was very impressed. The venue is very nicely decorated, food was very good, service good too. Will be somewhere to go next time I’m in hitchin

I love the Hermitage stylish, great food, great service. Just so sad that you are left feeling taken advantage of. Prices are ridiculous, especially drinks prices I ordered a Margarita for £11.50 (ouch) when it came its was in a half size glass. We drank our drinks and left, won't be going back sadly, shame as I really like it there.

Haven't had food here other than a sweet treat but I love coming to this place to relax, read, chat or do some work. It is on the more expensive side but the quality makes it worth it.

We visited the restaurant, and when booking were asked if it was a special occasion so we added it was a birthday. When it came time to order desserts we were full, so declined and asked for the bill. Our server bought out ice cream with a candle which we thought was a really nice gesture to finish off a lovely meal. When the bill came we noticed we’d been charged for it. We were a bit taken aback as it was made to appear that the dessert was complimentary. It left a sour taste and we didn’t feel comfortable to point it out. We originally gave the benefit of the doubt assuming it was a mistake but we’ve since heard others have had the same experience. It’s a real shame the restaurant choses to do this and seems out of touch with the vibe.

Having not visited The Hermitage since pre covid we were excited to see how it had changed. Have to say it didn't disappoint - the food is possibly even better than it was a few years ago (no easy feat as it's always been great!). Service was good, bar tenders were super friendly. I would say however the cocktails were not as good as they once were, albeit still enjoyable (margarita in particular was quite poor). 9/10, will be back.

Great food from interesting and tempting menu. Excellent wine list too. Atmosphere is great; really appreciated the sound absorbing panels in the restaurant area which made conversation easy. Can't say the same of the bar area, almost impossible to make myself heard on a busy Saturday night and my ears are still ringing.

Birthday treat. First time but I am going back. Porterhouse steak was fabulous.
