Hermitage Road Restaurant & Bar in North Hertfordshire

We had such an excellent lunch, really good food and our server Simran was excellent, very attentive and made us feel very relaxed.

I visited an old friend in Hitchin who took me to this restaurant for lunch today. I am writing this hoping the young lady who served us see this, as the service was top. Nothing was too much for you as we took ages to order as we were catching up AND your smile was always there, we really enjoyed it, you were really pleasant, service was impeccable! Also the steak was cooked to perfection as ordered and the afterwards bar drinks were a vibe! Nothing to envy top London restaurants where I live or the Spanish charms where I’m originally from with that service! This is an example of how you’ve made an ordinary lunch in something extraordinary, THANKS!

Had a great lunch at The Hermitage on my birthday. We had requested a booth which we were given. We both had the Korean chicken to start and then I had the fish and chips which was amazing and my husband had the jambalaya. He liked it but didn’t love it and wished he’d had the same as me. The service was superb and I got a little sweet treat at the end of the meal which was a nice touch. Our only gripe was that the room (which is very big with a very high ceiling ) was cold. We were about to mention it but another group did. We then saw an employee using a remote control and pointing it to a ceiling device. It didn’t make much difference in the time we were there but it’s a huge room to try and heat. I understand electricity is expensive but diners want to feel warm when they’re eating. Not hot or cold but warm. Otherwise it was lovely.

We are regular visitors to the Hermitage and usually love it. However this is the second time one of us has been made very ill. First time it was a bad oyster, and this time the only thing my wife had different was a prawn starter. So the restaurant definitely has occasional problems with its seafood.

Our main meal came out before our drinks, we had to ask for our sides and our drinks after having started eating already. Food was good but service seemed slow today and not the usual standard.

Food delicious! Lady that showed us to our table was lovely and very welcoming, a great shame the same can’t be said about our waitress!

Booked for my Father’s 80 birthday. It was perfect! Staff very attentive and friendly delivering top notch service. Food was amazing, served at the correct speed. Fabulous selection of drinks and a vast wine list. This place is an excellent venue run expertly by enthusiastic staff who appear to be really happy working there (not always the case in hospitality!). Would highly recommend a visit.

We went for my birthday, and it was incredible! Definitely on the pricier side, but we knew this before hand, as it was a special occasion. Every single thing we ordered (drinks and food) was exceptional, and it made for a really special birthday. All the staff were amazing, and very kind - always ready to help us! I also liked that there was a separate area for the bar and dining, so that next time we can just come back for drinks if we wished. All in all, can’t wait to go back, and we will be raving about this place for a long time!

I don’t often do three courses but so as not to miss out on my favourites, I had two starters, main and pud! The team are very attentive and I love the building’s architecture. A great vibe, great food and worth the train ride.

Our first visit for a joint birthday & anniversary and loved it. Right from being greeted and seated through to the quality of the meals and waitress Grace - everything was spot on and we felt very well looked after. Very classy looking place. We got there for an early table at 6pm and it was quiet so cant comment on how busy it gets. Looking forward to going back.

I really used to like the Hermitages, however Sunday Lunch-service was a let down. On entering the restaurant we was greeted quickly and taken to our table.It went downhill after, It took a while for our food orders to be placed, I had to ask to order. The roast dinners we couldn’t fault both really enjoyed, and came quickly, However it took a long wait for our plates to be taken away. We asked for the dessert menu but it became really difficult to attract anyone’s attention to place a dessert order we gave up and just asked for the bill, very unlikely I would ever return now.

I recently needed a daytime event venue and had eaten at the Hermitage before. I knew they had great service and food. Although it wasn't the type of event they usually catered for or held, they were amazing. Megan looked after all planning and communication and was beyond brilliant! This is a wonderful place with lovely people working behind the scenes and also behind the bar and restaurant. The service was great, the food was yummy and the planning was awesome. Highly recommended.

Excellent food. Service a bit slow initially but it was very busy. Very tasty roast with all the trimmings. The brûlée bread and butter pudding is excellent

Had a fabulous family Sunday lunch here and was looked after really well by the waitress Grace. The starter of Korean chicken had a great kick to start the meal, The sharing lamb shoulder roast was moist and fell off the bone, accompanied by great roast potatoes, vegetables and rich gravy. Felt well looked after and the food was excellent

Sat at table 20 on the end of a line. Very busy traffic area and corner seat gets bumped and bounced on the sprung floor. Good food but not as good as usual as we have been quiet a few times . Asked for a booth but refused as only 4 in our party as there needs to be 5 or 6 apparently. Unfortunately there were only 4 customers in a number of the booths so no consistency. The sirloin steak was over cooked. The house white and red were not nice ! Service charge charged at 12.5% which is fine for good service ours was ok. May leave it a while before we return .

Great atmosphere, we walked in and had food and drinks in the bar area (not the restaurant where you need to book). We still got nice seats! The food was tasty and the service was very attentive and friendly. The place was buzzing around 7:30 PM. We had the vegan Thai Red Curry which was tasty (I would have just added a bit of tofu ;)

Broadly speaking it was a lovely evening and a nice way to celebrate a special occasion. The only fault was the delay in the wine order. We ordered a bottle of wine for the main course and it still hadn’t arrived 10 mins after the mains were delivered. We had to ask our waiter to chase and by the time it finally arrived we had almost finished. Fortunately as the bottle hadn’t been opened we changed it from a bottle just to 2 glasses. This was a shame as the wine was very nice when it eventually arrived.

Very nice restaurant. Came here for a dinner with my girlfriend and we were pleasantly surprised by the service. Yana was an excellent soumelier with a big knowledge in wines. We were happy to see ukrainian vines here too!

Great service from delightful, attentive , lovely characterful building with great atmosphere - lively so not so suitable for a really intimate meal perhaps but perfect for our visit. Only teeny suggestion is the gnocchi I had the sauce was a bit Luke warm and maybe not as seasoned as I’d like but overall delicious. Looking forward to returning in a the future (first visit). Also the ladies toilets were heated ! one of my absolute pet peeves eating out is freezing cold facilities - a remarkably common occurrence 😂

Hubby’s birthday meal. From the moment we walked in, the staff were very attentive, but not overly so. Three up of us were eating, hubby and I both had Korean chicken to start, it was sublime. Our main courses were equally delicious. Our server was new, but very professional and friendly. The manager of the establishment came to chat, very, very friendly gentleman. We were given a complimentary dessert wine, which was delicious. Wouldn’t hesitate to go back. A wonderful evening was had by all. Thank you to all of the staff for a wonderful evening.

A lovely place that has become my favourite restaurant. My only wish is for more custard when serving the sticky toffee pud!! 😜 Omar was great at looking after us.

Wanted to spoil ourselves. But unfortunately was let down by the small portion of food given. We went away hungry and disappointed. The main servings were the size of a small starter and not value for money.

Lovely decor, ambience for pre dinner cocktails followed by dinner which was delicious with interesting choices. Very beautifully festive and service was good. Wine selection could be more price varied.

Amazing and genuinely hospitable staff. The food was delicious, and nothing we asked for was too much. I can't recommend the Sunday Roast Pork and the Sunday Roast Beef highly enough, and the three-course set menu option was amazing value for money. All of the food and drinks received were excellent. If you are fortunate enough to be looked after by Simran, the waitress, as my family and I were, you will be in great hands and well looked after by a very smiley, helpful, and lovely person.

Lovely post Christmas brunch with family. Service prompt polite and friendly. Food was excellent. The room is gorgeous. We were a group of 8 and it was easy to hear each other. We were not rushed out. Will definitely go again.

We visit every year after Christmas with a group of friends and partners, but unfortunately, this was the least enjoyable night we’ve had. While the food itself was well-cooked and tasty, with high-quality meat and vegetables, and the wine was excellent, there were a lot of items missing from the menu, which was disappointing.

The waitress was very friendly and efficient, the food tasty and a fun Xmas Eve ambience ! 🙏👏

A general lack of communication throughout the team. We arrived, were seated and ordered our drinks and food. Our waitress was lovely and the atmosphere pleasant. This is where things started to go a bit wrong. We ordered some bread and olives to start and a roast for main course. Our starters arrived before our drinks order, however it was not what we ordered, our waitress removed the order only to be presented five minutes later with the same food. After a while of waiting our drinks finally arrived followed by the olives, still no bread. our mains arrived before we had even started the starters and as a result we ended up just sending the starters back. The roast pork was good but not as good as previous visits, it was a tad dry and the crackling didn’t crackle. We had our desert and were rushed into paying the bill. I would have loved our drinks to have arrived promptly, the correct starter to have arrived and been given time to eat it and the pork to be a little better cooked. Generally good, made better as it was our family Christmas get together so the gags where rolling but honestly, the team need to work together better and not rush orders through just to make more money.

It was my 21st birthday and i ordered the flat iron steak - it was absolutely divine, cooked perfectly. I also got a scoop of ice cream with a candle in on the house! I always love coming here, it feels so sophisticated and classy but laid back at the same time. Every time i visit the Hermitage i have an amazing time. Prices were reasonable considering the quality.

We had a great lunch followed by cocktails at the Hermitage on Saturday 7th. Great staff and special shout of to Ellis one member of staff who was particularly attentive and nothing was too much effort. Thanks Ellis.

Food always good quality but service last few times has been incredibly slow. After 20 minutes ordered drinks from bar ourselves

Left hanging at front desk when arrived. Had to ask twice for water. Wine ordered had to be requested again and arrived as one main finished and other nearly finished! Staffing seemed to be an issue and no front of bar staff to deliver orders. Waitress apologised twice and said had forgotten water and then the wine ordered. Attention to detail a bit lacking on this occasion and we frequent lots of ACI venues in this area and north Norfolk, definitely not the norm we are used to.

Food is always good and the staff are amazing. Highly recommend!

A special highlight was how both Omer and the kitchen accommodated our group’s allergies with great care and professionalism. They ensured that every dish was prepared safely without compromising on flavor, which made the evening even more enjoyable and stress-free. The food was simply exquisite – every dish, from the starters to the dessert, was perfectly prepared and beautifully presented. We had our work Christmas party here on the 29th of November. Our large table was waited on by Omar. Omar was fantastic. He was professional yet funny and extremely friendly. He also took care of those of us who were not drinking and offering us a vast selection of non alcoholic drinks and cocktails. He took great care of our table and he helped to make our evening very special. The food and atmosphere was also superb. A great place to come for a work do, we would definitely come here again.

Excellent Sunday lunch as always, very generous portions, we had the lamb to share, it was delicious. Staff are extremely polite and friendly. Excellent all round.

From the greeting to the food, everything was perfect. Super pleasant, left alone to enjoy our meal but attentive enough to let us know we could order more or request sauces etc. Colleagues, without prompting, recognised the music was a tad too loud and adjusted the volume immediately. Always such a great vibe at the Hermitage, the entire team is awesome.

I’m have been to the Hermitage many times over the years and more recently have been enjoying the lunchtime set menus, especially when meeting a colleague for a working lunch. We often work downstairs in the bagel bar then come upstairs for lunch. It’s a working lunch so the set menu has offered good value for money. Lately though it has started to be a bit disappointing, specifically the set menu. The Korean chicken has become smaller and smaller since the first time I experienced it about 2 years ago at a birthday lunch. Back then we each had between 5-6 pieces which we commented on was very filling and with a side order of chips and salad would make a good main meal. Now the amount has decreased to 3 much smaller pieces of chicken which are gone in 3 or 4 bites. I was also disappointed that they have taken fish a chips off the set menu again which is a firm favourite with me and my colleagues and friends, it’s one of the main reason we go there. The replacement was this awful Gnocchi dish with burnt butter, butternut squash and sage which was like eating a cloying oil fest, it was awful! I sent it back and ordered a seafood fettuccini from the main menu as the set menu had a gotchujang burger which has similar flavours to the Korean chicken and flat iron steak , I don’t eat steak. The fettuccini was ok but there was very little seafood, most of the clam shell were empty, I think I had 3 tiny clams out of 6 shells and 2 overcooked prawns. When the bill came I saw that I had been charged the full price for the meal and queried this because of my earlier complaint. The server did reduce it to the price of a main on the set menu but it was disappointing that I even had to ask, where is the good will and customer service for a bad main that I sent back. Generally I have eaten good food at the Herm, but yesterday was not good and there were very few wait staff around when I did have a complaint which meant my colleague had finished his meal before my replacement main.

Visited on Sunday for a 60th Birthday party, family travelled 2 hours from various directions - Well worth it. The young man who served us was welcoming, willing and aware of the different ages in the group and his approach to individuals tailored well. the food was excellent ( Tear & Share Lamb was lovely ) and the venue interesting. A testament to the managers of this venue. Can see us returning. Well done

Unfortunately there is self-service and it is always very crowded and therefore noisy. But the coffee is excellent and the food is delicious and freshly prepared. Good selection of cakes. The ginger walnut cake was exquisite.

Been many times before but never for brunch. Felt so decadent having oysters and bloody Mary at 10am. Loved the name or the no alcohol version -bloody shame. Perfect.

Excellent food and service. We choose from the set menu which is available until 6.45pm and provides good value. A great experience for a special occasion.

What a cracking location and what delicious food. We had a business lunch here and it's the perfect setting in Hitchin for this if you are looking for somewhere that adds a touch of class to the agenda. Excellent Service and a relaxed atmosphere.

Haven’t been for a while, however from arrival, coats taken and secured, service at the bar, table selection, polite service, quality and description of food, all very good. Is is a noisy atmosphere , but everyone was having fun.

Always like to support local businesses and Hermitage coffe bar is by no means inexpensive, but nevertheless, I wanted to support them. There were about 5 members of staff behind the counter. Only x1 food order ahead of mine on the pass. As I only ordered a plain bagel with butter, it shouldn't be long After seeing the order ahead of mine go out I waited for my toasted bagel. And waited and waited. Whilst the counter top was slowly wiped down, in order to not disturb the chat they were having. So I went up and asked for my order, stating it is only a plan bagel. A few minutes later it just happened to be ready. It was totally anemic. So pale that the lady, sat near me, just laughed. Seriously guys. You charge ALOT and the quality of your food is very good, but at these prices your services should be much better.

Good lunch, the curried scallops were tasty, slightly confused by being asked how many we wanted per portion, we went with 2 which was suffice. Roast was good, but nut roast was more like stuffing, so bit disappointed with that. Service was okay, not the best, had to wait a good while for our drinks & had to chase them up.
