I visited here for a cooked breakfast a few months ago but have also sampled their great lunches over time and gave it the best rating possible and proclaimed to all those who would listen, that this is the best in the area. Unfortunately my recent visit didn’t live up to my own expectations. Ordering exactly the same full English cooked breakfast, I was served by the wonderful staff here and picked a table. I was the only one in a waited for the quality to be put in front of me. Unfortunately the presentation let it down straight away. I wondered what had been put on the plate and found it to be a large upside down mushroom. I’m not that picky but every one I’ve ever had was the right way up? …ok that might sound picky! The yolk had been broken while cooking so I got a yellow looking flat egg. One of the sausages was burnt which was left on the plate and the other tasted a bit strange, so was left too. The black pudding was also a little dry. Strange that I was first in on opening and yet these ingredients didn’t seem fresh or the quality I experienced previously. The bacon was superb though! Now here’s the strange thing about this place. I’m used to salt and pepper on the table or at least some of those little sachets to hand. When I got the breakfast I was asked if I wanted sauce. I got it and the guy walked away. Went to look for the salt and pepper. No salt and pepper. I asked at the counter and the staff member turned to the same guy in the kitchen if he had the salt and pepper and he said “I’ve already asked him” before turning to see me standing there. Now this isn’t new. Myself and the family have joked on other visits that the condiments must be on rationing. Overall, disappointed on this occasion, but it wouldn’t stop me from coming back for their lunches etc. the girl on the counter is superb and I’ve always found the ambience of the place good.

Went with family who are vegetarian. Ordered vegetarian breakfast. When it arrived sausages did not look anything like vegetarian very greasy. Enquired with the staff, adamant they were vegetarian. Tried, but not convinced and left sausages. When staff clearing table, daughter in law asked again about sausages, waitress disappeared and returned with packet. This clearly stated pork sausages, she pointed to the green label which was gluten free and was clearly convinced that meant they were vegetarian. On realising the mistake when pointed out, there was no apology she just stated that that was what her manager ordered for vegetarian and she would let her know. My daughter in law was horrified that they had actually eaten some meat, having been a vegarians for a long time. Have tried emailing via website, but just keeps coming back error. They need to recognize the seriousness of what happened. It could have been an allergy and life threatening. Apologies are required and changes to practice made. Rachel

This place is very local for me. Literally a 5min drive away. Family members had been telling me I should call in and today I finally did. Decided I needed a slice of cake and a coffee and jumped into the car with my Mrs and called in. Walking in I saw people eating what was essentially a Sunday lunch and that was it. Ordered. Eaten and on my merry way an hour later. This place does more than sandwiches and cake. Seemed popular with the Lycra clad cyclist brigade too. Superb service, reasonable prices and just a general homely feel good factor about the place. I’ll be back. Highly recommended.

We both had a breakfast special here today. Lovely bacon sausages fried egg and beans with a slice of toast and butter. A pot of tea each too. The cost was a very reasonable £10.00 for everything. It was freshly cooked and hot and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The cafe was light and airy indoors and there was also the option to eat outside in the sunshine. A good experience an parking just a few steps away.

Stopped here for breakfast a few weeks ago while touring in our Motorhome. Arrived about 15 minutes before they opened but lady was kind enough to open up the outdoor seating area so we could sit and wait. It was a lovely morning and a pleasant place to sit. Service was good, breakfast was lovely and reasonably priced and our dogs were allowed to sit with us outside. Lovely little cafe inside too ... I imagine it will be quite popular with locals. Only tiny little negative would be lack of vegetarian options on the menu, however, I would certainly recommend and be happy to visit again if in the area.

Found this small Cafe right next to a new housing development. 1st we had plenty of parking space and a pleasant short walk to the Cafe. Good choice on the menu and also a specials board. Had a lovely "homemade" soup with locally sourced bread buns. It was quiet when we arrived but was filling up as we left just before 12 noon. Right next to a small garden centre which is only open through the week.

Love the garden café...we visit probably twice a week for a coffee but once a week for lunch and there's a different special on every day The staff are all so friendly, and that makes such a nice difference Excellent locally sourced fresh produce, good sized portions, food is consistently good, and the prices are very reasonable My treat being on a diet once a fortnight is the 'death by chocolate' cake....totally yummy Definitely recommend

Since my last review 19th Jan 2020, what have you done Hepscott owners? Previously, a bowl of soup with bread was £3.30 and tasted great, today 29th Feb 2020 and you have applied new price increases all round and the soup has gone up by £1 per bowl. £4.30 for the soup and today was carrot & coriander and it was watery and lacked a stock flavour. My wife left her soup half way through. How can you justify price increases over 100%? Chips were grossly over cooked and full of ends of potato. Sorry but this is our last visit as we have found better value cafe prices. (Morrisons Blyth is great for soup & bread at about half the price) What is a little out of the way place is now pricing itself out of our cafe stop list. Sadly, we will not be returning to what was a weekly stop for us as a family.

We’d cycled from Sunderland and this was our halfway house / lunch stop. Some of the bots had been here before and I could see why. The food was excellent. The soup fresh and sandwiches well made. Friendly and attentive staff make this a sure stopover again.

I often call for lunch when in the area. The food is good and wholesome, sometimes the quantity is a little excessive but don't let that put you off. There is a fair choice of main course and for afternoon tea the scones and cake look tempting. The staff are helpful and friendly and, for me, it's the ethos of the cafe which scores it the most points. There are a few tables outside on the deck, where it is very pleasant to sit on a sunny day. Quite happy to provide a jug of water. Closed on Sunday. It is also worthwhile checking out the plants for sale in the horticultural area.

My friend and I are always looking for new places to go for a coffee and a natter. So when we came across this place we decided to give it a go. We ordered fruit scones, jam and clotted cream with two teas. The scones were huge!!!!! But delicious but next time maybe just get one between us so we won't have to be rolled out as we were stuffed ha ha. Staff very friendly and helpful. Will definitely visit again

Went on Saturday for lunch and once again the meal was absolutely lovely, and also huge portions. Very reasonably priced indeed. I had the special of the day ham and eggs and my wife had the jacket potato and we really enjoyed it. Well done everyone. It is very quiet at the moment because of the building works in progress as you turn off the main road which is a shame. They have put a small sign up at the junction saying that cafe is open as normal.

This is a small garden centre which is run to teach people with learning difficulties with this cafe attached. Had a bacon sausage and egg sandwich in a breadcake with a latte. It was delicious and excellent value. Clean well run cafe with toilet facilities. Well worth supporting. When I was there the sound of laughter and enjoyment was obvious. Small car park definitely recommend.

Was looking for somewhere to have breakfast after traveling up to Northumberland when came across a sign advertising this cafe. This is a cafe with a small garden centre where people with learning difficulties are taught gardening and catering skills. Lovely clean and tidy site with friendly staff. The food was excellent and the coffee very good. Bought a handmade card for £1 in the small shop. Loved my visit and thoroughly recommend.

This lovely little cafe supports the work of adults with learning difficulties. The cafe is small and cosy and serves a range of good and wholesome food our favourites are the scones, they are really good value and freshly baked. This is also a workplace for adults with learning difficulties and grows a small selection of plants and shrubs, we have bought a number of plants here and they always do well. Take a trip out here by car or by bike, you won't be disappointed.

A fantastic quiet underrated little cafe with amazing home made food ad such cheap prices, a huge slice of cake with a massive mug of hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows which was absolutely delicious, not a bit of dryness in that cake and for a really good price!! they also wear hair nets which is great and what I think alot more cafes/restaurants should do because I hate finding hairs in my food which always seems to happen to me! lovely little wood trail next to the cafe, lovely flowers to look at, and provides a really valuable service for people with learning disabilities! I am very very impressed! well done!!

Warkworth has a small nucleus of great places to eat, and we'd never tried Bertrams, so we went. It was a no brainer given the quality of other reviews. The only downside was that we had to get in and out early so were nearly the first people in hence little "atmosphere" but that was our agenda not the restaurant, and we were there for the food... ... which was first class. Superb hake served with a beautiful herby crab pate and dauphinoise potatoes. The flavours were immense and everything was cooked to perfection. You notice the difference with real quality and top chef standards and this delivered for me. The lemon meringue dessert was the proverbial icing on the metaphorical cake. Superb.

My cousin and I were hugely impressed by Castaways. I had been reluctant to go because about 20 years ago the original café had been taken over by a useless couple. But when I passed and looked in, I could see that its original atmosphere had been recreated by the current management. Our reception was very friendly. The café was full (always a good sign) and we were third in the queue. Our table was soon ready and we were seatedby a waitress. We were very comfortable and the atmosphere was nice. Many pleasant people there as customers happily dining and chatting. Good choice of food and drink. I had the traditional breakfast and my cousin had… I think it was avocado and egg on sourdough bread. We were both very content with our lunch. I will certainly return and bring members of my family to enjoy castaways. Nicely sited, easy car parking and great views over Seaton Sluice and the sea. Get yourself along there and have a treat!
