Henry’s Cafe Bar in Cardiff

Excellent afternoon tea for a colleague's leaving do. Food fab and great service. Our waitress said she hasn't been working long, unfortunately I didn't get her name, but she was attentive but not fussy.

We had a lovely meal at lunch time. There was a good menu to choose from. Emi and the rest of the staff were very helpful and friendly.

Six of us had lunch in Henry’s today – three courses per person and not a complaint from all 18 dishes. Food was exceptionally good and great value. We had a smashing table and our server Ella-Louise was outstanding – friendly and professional - a real asset to Henry’s! A good time was had by all, and I would thoroughly recommend the place for lunch.

Despite not being that busy the staff seemed rushed off their feet and short to the point of rude with their service. We really felt as if we were inconveniencing them by asking questions, or even ordering food and drink. It may be that they were short staffed, however being busy doesn’t justify rudeness. Food was average and took a long time to be served, we were warned of this at point of ordering though, the wait I mean not the quality! There was one female member of staff who seemed especially busy that still managed to smile and be polite and professional, I hope she sticks around for Henry’s sake.

Fantastic service from Julie. Food was good and served quickly so we had plenty of time before the theatre. Great offer of 2 meals for £20 to boot!

Had a recent birthday celebration here and had a lovely meal. Big thanks to all the staff.

Encountered a rude and aggressive member of serving staff, we were also short served drinks (should have complained, but we let that go being too stunned by the member of staff). Left quickly. Pretty much the worst bar in the city, we won't be stepping foot back in there.

Popped in for mid day lunch, my wife's dish wsd returned the chicken was dry and seemed days old. My steak sandwich was tough and gristly. Such a pity in it's day it was our go to place. Lovely waitress though.

Absolutely vile!! Drinks smelt as if they had just come through the sewerage!!! I would never ever return. Worst pint I’ve ever had in my life.

We arrived and found a table, nobody came over to us to give menus, I had to go over to another table to get a menu, finally a waitress appeared and give us menus and told us it’s easier if you order on the app, and just left us to it, after searching and searching for the meal I wanted I could not find it so asked the waitress to take me order, it was as if this was to much work for her, she shouted “ITS ON THE APP” so I asked please could you show me where, she walked off and came back and said it’s on the app. So I had to settle for something else. The food came out at all different times, and then we were left with our plates uncleared, nobody came over to see if we were okay or if our food was okay. We would have stayed for more drinks but the attitude on the staff and being made to feel uncomfortable we decided to go else where. Safe to say I won’t be returning any time soon.

Visited here early Saturday afternoon for a lighter meal. We were served by Lisa who was prompt in acknowledging us. The place was buzzing as it was busy. Everything was clean. Food was good - we both had tortellini. It was good but was not hot so just a star removed. I would visit again when I return to Cardiff.

Julie was the perfect host we had a tipsy afternoon tea and she was so friendly and accommodating , it made our afternoon very relaxing and enjoyable . We would highly recommend Henry’s .

We felt comfortable with the cleanliness of this place, the open space, and the menu Our server, Julie was friendly and straight forward, with a smile. The sangria spritz, rhubarb crumble, and red wine were worthwhile for a quick energy boost for the afternoon. We will come back for the rest of the meal another day!

Nice food good value for money and drinks decent value as well, 10 for a double with mixer. Julie waitress was attentive.

Useless. Saturday night - 10 people in the venue. Asked for a negroni and told they don’t do it ! Doh it’s on the menu Useless

We came here on June 13th. We were late due to a crash on the motorway and we were going to see a show at the theatre next door. Julie was amazing, found us a table, was really quick delivering out meals amd couldn't have been nicer. Excellent service and calmed us down after a stressful drive. Thank you so much Julie!!

Just had a late lunch, pie and mash The pie over cooked, pastry burnt, when I mentioned it to the waitress, all she said was sorry about that, as if that's the end of it. Being a military veteran I asked if the accept a military discount card, answer as expected NO Whats has happened to customer service and quality of food .?

Had some food here. It's decent and great if you are going up the road to the New Theatre as we sat outside to eat so could keep an eye on the queue. We had fish and chips, falafels and a prawn and calamari meal.

Worst English breakfast of my life. I've had better on aeroplanes. The eggs were microwaved (we thought they were and the staff confirmed it), sausages overcooked to the point of tasting like cardboard, and my mates avo on toast was just sliced wonder bread. Waiter was nice though.

Lovely relaxed atmosphere staff are friendly and take your order for drinks first then give you time to look though the menu food is delicious and very fresh.

Didn't spend much time here it was gone 10 o'clock on a Saturday and it was dead ... very surprised 😮 its not the first time we have been here at this time on a Saturday...they need to think about entertainment perhaps.

Went 30/5/24. Served by Lisa. Kids menu great and generous portions. Nice variety to choose from. Great grandchildren really enjoyed the prawn starters. Aged 8 and 3. Problem was only 3 in the portion and the 3 year old wanted the third. The welcome from Lisa and the other lady (sorry no name) was lovely an their interaction was great to both children and us. Both children thought Lisa was lovely and gave both ladies hugs on leaving. Will definitely come again. Gary and Maddy Williams

Food was absolutely diabolical. Unbelievable!! How they can mess up a chicken salad is beyond me. Chicken hard as a rock , lettuce was slimey, broccoli stalk was like as hard as a twig. I complained about the chicken and they were going to just take it off my plate in the restaurant 😳🤯 will never go there again 😒

Service was excellent and food was delicious. Lamb shank is a top choice with a pint of Tiny Rebel !

Had a lovely meal here on Saturday early evening. Lovely staff, both waiters were very professional and hard working.

We had coffee here whilst waiting for the theatre box office to open. Very friendly and helpful staff, nice coffee and comfortable seating. Seemed to be popular with an older clientele, but the atmosphere was relaxed and there were plenty of places to sit. Just off the main shops, it's a good place to pop in for a rest and refreshment.

Lovely food and lovely staff...enjoyed the meal before show in New theatre. The only thingi didn't like was the crumble...shame it wasn't how I imagined it would be. Rest all was fab. Thank you.

Team was lovely and very helpful . Ordered the steak pie which was very tasty washing it down with a lovely glass of wine. Definitely will be back when next in Cardiff!

Popped in for a cocktail while waiting for my husband. Ordered an espresso martini. I was not impressed as it was very cold and had very little taste. The barman didn't interact, so I just paid my £10.50 and sat down.

This used to be a nice place but we went here for a few drinks and only stayed for one. The floor staff were incredibly rude. The bar was poorly organised, the staff didn't know who was first (and it wasn't very busy), and the table we got pointed to "go over there" was grubby. I'm not going back.

A good place to have a drink or meal in the centre of Cardiff. Reasonably priced and a good selection of drinks in offer, including tea/coffee. Two or three steps on the way into the bar and I saw no ramp, so if you have a wheelchair then it would be very difficult to get in. I'm not aware if they have a way of combating that, so you may want to check before your visit.

Very disappointed at Henry's today. All the roast dinners had gone before 6pm so I had to choose an alternative unlike the diners next to us who left immediately. I asked if they had garlic mayo to go with my meal. "Yes we do". Except no they didn't, the kitchen had run out of that as well. After my meal I ordered a latté only for the poor waiter to have to come back and tell me they'd also run out of milk! Only oat milk left which I don't like. The dead daffodils on every table didn't improve the situation either. The young man who served us was very pleasant and most apologetic so 5 stars for him.

Came for a bottomless brunch… and oh was it worth it! Timea our waitress was amazing, such a laugh and didn’t leave us without a drink! Food was lovely, and the atmosphere was great. Definitely worth a visit, and if you have Timea as your waitress then you’re doubly lucky!

Called in was really busy and lively we were shown to a table immediately excellent food and service a young polite waiter named Arthur made all the difference to our visit And even though himself and his colleagues We're extremely busy he took the time and patience to attend to everyone's needs Well done young man bravo will definitely be calling here again 👏

We had a very nice meal at Henry's. Steak and venison pie for me, and fish and chips for my wife. Emi took very good care of us, accommodating our requested changes to dishes. Good food at a good price.

We went to Henry's for brunch and this was great. Curtis was our server and he was absolutely fantastic and made sure everything was okay for everyone, even making amendments to drinks for some people. Thank you Curtis for your amazing service, we really appreciated it and will definitely be back! In terms of food, the brunch food was good, however some of my sausages were almost rock solid and I could not eat them, if this was resolved this would have been an amazing brunch however this would not put me off coming again, thoroughly enjoyed. Great food. Good prices plenty of choice. Pie was lovely with plenty of veg. We were there for pre theatre late afternoon lunch. Served in great time had lovely cheesecake afterwards. Food not rushed and service was fab from Julie and her colleague - thank you

Coffee was nice, however breakfast was bang average, the toast tasted like a tangerine and my bacon tasted like a pack of walkers, it was extremely over cooked. Great drinks however food is below average.

Went for pre theatre dinner. However unlike previous theatre reviewers ate early giving us plenty of time to eat at leisure and have coffee and dessert after knowing it would be busy. Served by Julie and other young man who were very polite no rush. Had Lamb shank and husband had Beef rib. Both served piping hot and in reasonable time. No rush, no problem. Perhaps future diners prior to theatre reservations need to inform Henry’s of theatre trip and take advice from them on what time to reserve table due to increased demand.

Pre-theatre dinner reservation. Had to wait to be seated. Understaffed. Long wait for drinks, only receiving them after complaining. Another long wait for food. ANOTHER COMPLAINT. Was offered free drinks that never arrived. Finally received our meals. Lamb shank was cold and the Hunters chicken was just about warm. ANOTHER COMPLAINT. Was offered a discount on our bill which we turned down and left without paying. Witnessed other diners complaining about cold food and slow service. Also witnessed diners leaving as they hadn’t been served. At the end of the day, if Henry’s cannot cope with the amount of bookings for a pre-theatre dinner service, then they should turn down bookings, it’s better to have a half full restaurant with happy diners than a full restaurant with unhappy diners. The staff also need more support with extra staff on duty at busy times. I’m not sure if the place is under new management but if it is then they’re not doing a great job. Henry’s has been in that same spot for well over 30 years and the pre-theatre dinner service after that long should be a beeeze. I certainly would not recommend this place to anyone now and shall not be returning anytime soon which is a shame.

Reserved a table for 6pm as we were seeing a show at 7.30 so gave us 1.5 hours for food before the show. Turned up they couldn’t find my reservation so showed them the confirmation email. Found us a table, sat down waited 25 min before we even got a menu. Ordered drinks and food eventually, both of us wanted steak but they had sold out so ordered something else. Waited another 15 mins for the drinks! People had been waiting ages for food and all complaining, I asked the waiter how long food would be as we had a show to go to and already been sat at our table around 40 mins and only just ordered the food as service was so slow with the waiter coming over to be told at least 45 mins!!! So ended up leaving as wouldn’t be enough time. So went away disappointed and hungry with not enough time to find somewhere else to eat in time before the show. Terrible experience and will lot be returning or recommending this place to anyone!

Went Henry's on Valentine Day with my wife for food before the show in the New Theatre. Had ribeye steak and a bottle of red in the Valetines offer £45. The steaks were lovely and so was the wine. Andrew was our waiter who was friendly and efficient. Lovely experience. Definitely recommend.

We haven't been to Henry's since finishing work in the city centre. The food and staff, especially Julie, was first class. The table service was attentive. Never felt rushed. Would recommend to anyone. We will be back.

Went for pre-show drinks at Henry’s with some friends. The bartender argued that they didn’t have any bitter lemon (to accompany my gin), despite the fact that my friend had previously ordered the same drink. The bartender was adamant that they didn’t stock it, even when I explained that they obviously did! He never bothered to look. In the end I retrieved the bottle from my friends order to show him. No apology was given! Shocking attitude and poor customer service.

Visited for pre theatre dinner on 14th Feb 2024, plenty of tables available, service was relaxed and unrushed and Julie was very friendly and efficient. Rather than a main we had a selection of starters and side. We had the scallops on minted peas, dauphinoise potatoes and bbq chicken wings, all of which were very good, I would recommend all of them. One suggestion I would make is asking for a finger bowl as the bbq sauce got everywhere due to me being a messy eater!

Everything was as you would expect. Julie was very professional and on the ball. Would definitely go back.

Decided to pop in with my wife for dinner a few weeks ago, while away in Cardiff for the weekend. From the start... the only unoccupied table we found for ourselves had to be cleared, had to find menus myself. At no stage did any staff come to us, so after about 20 minutes of a wait, I went to the bar and asked for someone to please come take our order - another 25 minutes later someone finally came to take our order and to clear the table. Half an hour later, though it could have taken longer - I honestly lost the will to keep checking the time - the food finally arrived. It was mostly cold and inedible. I would have added some salt/pepper/ketchup to it to add some flavour but none was provided - once again I had to go find some myself. We'll definitely be back in Cardiff - but not here.

This is a fantastic place for great service and food. Our waitress Timea was amazing, friendly and always had a smile. The food was delicious and did not disappoint. Definitely be back again. Thank you to everyone.

Great food and friendly service ! Popped in for a pre-theatre meal with the family , even though the place was full the our server was very attentive and nice and food was delicious as well.

Disastrous visit. Arrived at 5pm. The restaurant was quiet. We were Looking forward to a nice pre theatre meal . Drinks order taken promptly. Food ordered. We ordered a starter which did arrive. 1hr 20 minutes later main course still not arrived. Other people who came in after us served before us. . I prompted the waitress as we had very little time until our show was starting. My burger swiftly arrived . It was stone cold in the middle. I don't think I would have minded so much if there had been an apology and admission that our order had sadly been forgotten. Ruined our evening.

Our waitress was Julie, her attitude, service and help was amazing. Would definitely be back. Diolch Julie. The portion size, taste was excellent.

We called here for a drink before going to the New Theatre to see a play. Stayed for one drink. Very pleasant. Early evening and quiet in there. Service at the bar was great.

Utter chaos....waiters had no idea what they were doing ...meals served different to menu details...pies were overcooked...couldnt find the chicken in the hunters chicken....shambles

Henry's was its totally reliable and comfortable self for an imporomtu Friday lkunch today. As ever, the service was impeccable and very attentive - our waitress was Emi who ensured our visit was that extra bit more special. The food was great and the atmosphere...

Julie provided by far the most exceptional service I have ever experienced in a hospitality setting. She went above and beyond and to exceed all my culinary expectations. She is the single most brilliant front of house staff I have ever encountered and is unparalleled...

We LOVE Julie she was so helpful in getting us lunch before it closed for the day and was super attentive. Her Welsh charm really added to dining experience couldn’t recommend her enough! Can’t wait until we see her again, food was also good.

Comfortable bar and restaurant. Part of Stonegate pub group who also own Yate's around the corner. Tends to be busy when The New Theatre is operating. Tends to be pub food, acceptable but not exciting. Similar menu to Yates.

Lovely spot for food before the theatre, great service from Kaci, nothing was any trouble. The food was lovely, we had the vegetarian burgers which were very tasty. Nice atmosphere and the venue is lovely. 2nd time here, and will definitely be back ☺️
