Coffee#1 Pontcanna in Cardiff

One of my go to coffee shops. And the best thing, it doesn't sell hard lines coffee (vile scented stuff), just good old fashioned coffee. The Piccolo which is not advertised is their version of a cortado. Perfect.

I've been in Cardiff for just a week and I've already fallen in love with this café! I was very well attended (I ended up forgetting to ask the name of the person who served me, my oversight) and I came back today to work in the afternoon. The environment is pleasant, organized, and has spaces for working. I highly recommend it and will return many more times!

Service was appalling. Staff telling that they get paid whether they serve me or not. I think the chap took a joke the wrong way. I was smiling and being friendly. But he went out of his way to be unfriendly and rude to me.

Really disappointed with my recent experience with the lack of customer service here from one staff member. Took my family here for breakfast and the food and place looked great, but the Australian middle aged tall man who was serving us was so awfully rude! The constant judgement of us on his face really upset my dad and my sister was upset from his awful service she refused to buy anything from him. The looks we received were of absolute disgust. We were just asking questions because it was our first time in Wales. I tried my hardest to get some kind of humility from him but it was impossible. He even said he runs the other way when he sees other Australians and we were Australian! We found this incredibly rude. He needs training on diversity and discrimination and needs to apologise to my dear father. Disgusting behaviour from a fellow Australian. We will not return. The young man who delivered our food was awesome and should be training the others on providing exceptional customer service.

Chai latte delicious. Colouring for kids. High chairs available. Loyalty app. Always drink specials like pumpkin pie latte or something festive for example. Can get very busy at weekends and you may not get a seat indoors. Small outdoor seating but very close to busy road.

Dog friendly restraunt, wife variety of drinks and meals, worth visiting

This place is awesome, the staff work extremely hard, fast, efficient, friendly and go above and beyond! And of Course the Coffee is always perfect 😀

Warm and cosy Coffee Shop with a comfortable atmosphere to enjoy a morning in. Staff were friendly and helpful and couldn't do enough to me my visit a pleasure. Attended for take out and wished myself and my colleagues stayed in. A revisit for sure to be planned.

This place really needs to work on their customer service. There are so many nicer places in Pontcanna for coffee unfortunately some of these are closed on a Monday.

Today Sunday 23rd June I asked for my usual Columbia Mokka which is normally a dark rich flavour with a lovely chocolate edge, today whoever served me decided that he would serve me his version of something else but NOT what I asked for. I even queried what he had served me the fact that I looked so pale and not at all the drink I would normally be served at this and every other Coffee 1 regularly visit. When asked why the coffee was so pale I was told that I depends on how much chocolate I decide to put in. Begs the question, who train these staff and don't they apply standards to their Coffee. I shall make my business to spread the word.

I love this place. The vibe is adorable and the coffee isn’t bad.

I've been here a few times, never had a bad time. There are various drinks options. Great spot for dog lovers.

Lattie nice but the toilets well not good. Mop bucket blocking door to disabled toilets, tripping hazard!

Disappointing 😞. Although staff were helpful, ambience and decor not the best. Too many dogs, only 1 toilet, which for large premises poor.

Cosy atmosphere. Very nice stop walking Pontcanna field. Good selection of desserts.

Loads to choose from even among the vegan options. A better than decent cup of tea. A really pleasant space to spend time in.

Burnt tasting, unpleasant coffee. Male member of staff with grey hair quite rude, seems to come up a lot in reviews. Did not stay long as it was quite loud, more like a bar with group of young men sat shouting and swearing. Don't recommend

So disappointing, this place is becoming a bit of a slum. Tables not cleared, food smeared on the floor, bin in the toilet overflowing and water over the floor. Also some of the seating is not fit for use. A real feeling of complacency.

Went to Coffee 1 today in Pontcanna Cardiff sat with my dog for 30 mins when my husband arrived my small caveshon was so pleased to see him and barked then stopped. I was then approached by the tall middle aged grey haired chap called Ryan who rudely said that if we didn’t keep the dog quiet we would have to leave. I was quite annoyed as he was quite loud and aggressive and left me feeling embarrassed by his tone in front of other customers. Upon leaving I decided to express my feelings to him in private to which he preferred to have this conversation in front of other customers, he was still very aggressive then cut me off in mid conversation. Unknown to me this was being observed by the so called manager I was then told to come to the side of the counter where the manager started to listen to my complaint. I asked for the barista name so I could complain only to be told by the manager that he wouldn’t give any names out and that I should leave. I left told my husband who went back in to speak to the manager who then reluctantly gave their names.I have read the other reviews and question why these pair are still there. They are rude aggressive and don’t like dogs making a noise even though it’s supposed to be dog friendly. I have made a complaint to head office and I believe some training is needed otherwise coffee 1 will lose customers. So Yuri ( the manager) and Ryan ( the tall curly grey haired barista) re train or work elsewhere that doesn’t involve dogs/ children and people. Won’t be going back . .

Went into the shop to work. Brought a home salad in with me as I’m tracking my meals at the moment. I bought a coffee and a brownie from the coffee shop. Weirdly interrupted and told by a member of staff I can’t eat my own food. Totally would’ve got it if I didn’t buy anything, but I bought a coffee and food? Totally unnecessary and made me feel uncomfortable. Never had this from a cafe before. Shame really because the coffee and cake were lovely.

Flavoursome coffee but the GF cappuccino cake was as dry as a bone - or stale. Still 10/10 for bothering - most places don't or offer you a shrivelled up prepacked lump masquerading as a "brownie". Can't fault the service..

Lovely staff, food v average (ham& cheese panini). Iced mocha quite nice though not mixed very well. Loads of space to sit (we were with a pram so v handy) but to be honest there must be better places around, sorry!

The atmosphere of this coffee shop is probably one of my fave 😍 Comfortable chairs, relaxing environment, big shop so a variety of tables and chairs to choose from to relax i with a book in hand and a coffee in the other. The workers are very jolly, welcoming, warm hearted ♥️ great with kids, they really care for customers and deliver a 5 star service everytime. Coffee is delicious, creamy and made beautifully can't fault it so always pop by when I'm passing for one!

Service and queue reduction is so slow. I also agree with many comments below about the middle aged man, I don't know his name but he has a European accent, I think he may be the manager? He's miserable and not customer friendly at all. People have been complaining about him for years, why on earth is he still there? ... especially when he has lost Coffee#1 so much custom. I think he should get a job away from face to face customer service. As for another young man. I thought I heard that my take away food was ready so innocently turned around and very politely said, "sorry I think I may have missed my call for my wrap", to which he replied "it will be ready when it's ready". A simple "I'll check for you now" would have been more customer friendly. Two new girls there were excellent and very polite however. I believe they were new as they were being trained. Worst Coffee#1 for atmosphere and service and I've been to many.

Quite comfortable, but they gave no notification that they were stopping the free coffee if you had nine points we had collected six points.and a further 3 points, but we weren't able to use it.

Pros: great location, plenty of space within the cafe along with a variety of seating options. Very dog friendly. Cons: AGGRESSIVE upselling. On a recent visit I had to say "no thank you" 3 separate times to the "seasonal blend" coffee upcharge, after 3 times I AGAIN was told "I really recommend getting the seasonal one". It was exhausting. Overall I will be choosing the other nearby coffee shops in future to meet people. It shouldn't feel like a fight to order the coffee you want to drink

I went into get a take away coffee yesterday the queue was slow and I had my dog with me - my dog began to bark and as I was about to take him out to calm him, a member of staff came up and said for us to leave. Whilst I understand how this was annoying for customers I felt the staff could have handled this better as a result we left me and my sister who also had a dog- i have been in this branch previously with my dog and had no issues with the staff, this experience has really put me off going back here.

My first time here. I would highly recommend it for quality and value. Lovely ambience and thd staff were very amicable. Definitely will frequent again

I went there at lunchtime with a friend. There was no Gluten Free option. The counter looked lovely, full of sexy sandwiches and a soup.... containing Barley. I couldn't have any sweet (which happens fairly often so I wasn't surprised) nor savoury. Actually, I am lying. I could have had a packet of crisps however, I wouldn't call this a lunch option. I ended up eating what was left over from my toddler's food. What a shame.

Lovely place, delicious coffee, yummy cakes and a great place to chill. Staff were very kind. I can't fault my experience, exactly what I needed!

Exceptionally mediocre. This is the apple tart I had which tasted like washing up liquid.

I really like coffee#1 as a chain but the atmosphere of this place is totally ruined by a single member of staff (middle aged bloke, grey curly hair) who is passive aggressive to customers, rude to other staff and completely intolerant of dogs (despite it claiming to be dog friendly). I won’t be going back and will think twice before going back to other Coffee#1s.

Coffee#1 does the best coffee and are dog friendly so we thought it be a nice experience. However visiting this establishment a puppy got excited and started barking at our dog and the server told us that if our dog continues to bark back (rudely) we would need to leave. So please visit but only if your dog is mute.

Great coffee and friendly atmosphere

Visiting a coffee shop can be an intimidating experience for the uninitiated. Asking for a white coffee can set eyes rolling. There is some pressure to know the difference between skinnies, flats and Americans. But persevere and you'll get there. Expensive enough. Too expensive if you don't enjoy the experience.

Lovely coffee, our little boy enjoyed his smoothie. We had toast and a sausage bap which were also nice. Dog friendly as well so a bonus for us. Will definitely visit again. Staff were friendly and polite.

Always a lovely place to relax for an hour over a coffee n cake lol. I gotta admit the staff make my run through black coffee to perfection always spot on. Nice little outside seating area, situated actually on Cathedral Road, at the busier end of Pontcanna. Rush hour here may not be so nice though; Bumper-to-bumper, cars, billowing Satan's Black Wind into the immediate Breathing Atmosphere (and your facial pores). You know what to expect with these Chains' of expensive coffee places. Nothing outstanding, pleasent (on a sunny day) nonetheless!

My drink was actually pretty good but my experience was ruined when the guy who took my order asked me if I had a mask to put on. I said ‘no I don’t’ and he said ‘make sure you have one for next time’ then proceeded to take my order… I’m sorry but why are you questioning people who aren’t wearing a mask when all restrictions have been lifted and you don’t have to wear a mask in food and drink places anyway. It’s choice now. I was fuming he even asked so based on this guy I’ve given a low star. Sort it out coffee#1 because if I go there again I’d purposely not wear one now because of that guy.

I don't often write reviews but felt like I had to this time. I ordered a decaf oat milk latte, but it was practically undrinkable. The first one was far too hot to drink comfortably and they probably burnt the milk so that there was barely any foam. I asked for it to be redone and the member of staff was being quite rude about this. I ended up with a coffee that tasted even worse, it was super bitter this time (as happens with some of the lower quality oat milk) and huge bubbles, instead of the micro-foam you expect with barista coffee. For a place with 'Coffee' in the name I expected far better. Save your money and go to Kin + Ilk down the road or any of the smaller cafés nearby.

It's fine. It's Coffee#1 innit ;) More independent options round the corner or over the field if you want to support local indies.

Lovely coffee but raspberry and white chocolate cake was a bit dry.

I think the way the staff do the dishes is horrendous. If I was environmental health I would have closed you down on the spot. Just so you know you are supposed to use soap not rinse everything in hot water. Awful will never go back
