Just grabbed 2 cod and chips from Henry Higgins and as usual absolutely banging!! Huge portion, cooked amazingly, not greasy at all. Succulent cod in a super crispy batter and the best chips in southend. Amazing value compared to the other chip shops around. If you really appreciate decent fish and chips don't bother going anywhere else use these guys, you will not be disappointed.

Eaten in all fish and chip shops in Southend and this is by far the best. Great fresh food , generous portions, lovely staff and reasonable prices. This place is highly recommended.

As always freshly cooked to order, batter on the cod is superb and light but crispy. Chips also awesome and crisp but super fluffy centre. I have been visiting for a few years now and NEVER EVER had anything other than a flawless meal. Friends I’ve recommended also always agree. Support this local amazing Fish and Chip restaurant in these troubled times, you won’t be disappointed. 👍🏻

Had not been here before, but we were very satisfied with our meals, my wife having grilled skate as she is a coeliac (gluten free) she was also offered rice flour batter as an alternative. I choose the large cod. The meal was freshly cooked and presented attractively and served by a friendly waitress it was also very good value. We noticed that other tables were occupied by regulars. We will return when we visit Southend again.

Nice meal for two well presented, old school, small side salad. Curry sauce to die for as was the mushy peas. The Rock was very nice as was my partner’s cod. Very reasonably priced coupled with good service. Nice little find

Visited again today and had the Fish Special from the menu. Absolutely superb, and cooked fresh to order. Seriously, you will not find better if you are local or just visiting Southend on Sea. We went for the second time this year when in Southend. The food is exceptionally good and the fish and chips was scrummy. Pleseant place with warm staff and great fish and chips and a very reasonable cost.

Saveloy had no taste chips tasted like the cod had been fried in the same oil as the chips curry sause tasted like it had a weird chemical taste to it! On the plus side the cod was big chips could of been better sorry...

We ordered takeaway on a Saturday, It arrived a little early which was good and they have the highest hygiene rating but that's where the good stuff ends. The food was dreadful. I have had better chicken burgers from the frozen section of the supermarket. The chips were the worst I have EVER had. They were grey and lumpy and 99% had black bits - completely inedible. It has good reviews so we were really disappointed. Perhaps customers who visit the shop get decent service because they are there in person to complain if necessary. I just can't imagine anyone serving a customer the nasty food we were given.

The fish & chips were crisp and perfectly cooked. The accompany salad was freshly prepared and generous. Best of all here is the service. Despite being very busy, the staff are good humoured and friendly. Good value, too. Highly recommended.

Staying in Southend for work this restaurant was handy to where I was staying. It didn’t disappoint, friendly staff, lovely fish &chips; with all the trimmings, the salad was lovely too, was expecting just a salad garnish but a little salad served separately, good portion sizes, glad I went for the small meal.Will def use again if in Southend.

These days you have kebab shops and fried chicken everywhere, you can can get fish and chips there too, but have to count with frozen food, but If you want to taste a real, well made fish in nice crispy butter and hand cut chips while getting to Southend, this is the place to go.

Recommended by my MIL so brought her here for lunch -what a find ! We had the all day special -if that was a medium fish you would definitely need a doggy bag for the large ! We waited 15min for food -well worth it to have the freshly fried cod and haddock, lovely real chips served with bread, salad and mushy peas and coffee /tea for less than £8.50

Great fish and chip shop - very old and traditional looking inside with a restaurant. We popped in for takeaway fish and chips, we waited about 10 mins or so for it to be cooked fresh. Great portion size and very reasonable! One small cod and chips (was not small!), one rock, large chips, saveloy and two drinks came to £16. Very friendly staff too - the man told us to take us much tartare sauce as we like free of charge. Small things. Sure we will be back soon as we are walking distance!

Had time to kill after a visit to the cinema so decided to have a meal here. Having lived in Westcliff I knew it fairly well but had not come in for a meal. Very friendly and helpful and the food was delicious and tremendously good value. Do give it a try.

I don't know what their secret is but there is a clear difference in quality between the fish and chips from Henry Higgins and those from other restaurants.

Henry Higgins has become our regular over the last couple of years... The portions are big, the food is excellent... We'll be back. Ps Ali the owner is a star and the service is top notch.

After many years of walking past this lovely fish and chips shop, I finally went in with a couple of friends and had a wonderful experience. The staff are very good with customers and are full of smiles. We decided to eat in this time and there was plenty of places to sit to enjoy our meal. I ordered the half pounder burger with chips and salad, and it was absolutely divine. Also, it came in a very large portion so I was very happy with that. I would definitely come again very soon as it was great. In my opinion, the best fish and chips restaurant in Southend.

Fancied fish and chips while visiting family nearby. Researched take aways and discovered this restaurant is only six minutes walk from my aunt's home, so paid a visit to get a meal for us both to enjoy at home. Portion sizes are very generous - we couldn't finish a regular size so will go for smaller portions next time. Friendly staff cook fish to order so every thing is piping hot, was still hot when I got the meals home. My 88 year old aunt enjoyed every bite, as did I, very tasty. Well worth a visit, will return next time I'm in Southend and may bring my aunt to the restaurant to eat in the lovely building.

Me and my husband visited Henry Higgins tonight after spending the day at the pier. Whilst it isnt on the pier, it is located just off the main high street and is very convenient. The fish was cooked to perfection, the chips were proper fish shop chips and the mushy peas were divine. In comparisin to the fish and chip shops on the pier Henry Higgins has excellent prices! The staff were friendly which was a lovely bonus to an all round lovely meal out. Would recomend to anyone looking for a decent fish and chip shop.

We go every week. Every week the fish and chips are perfect. The service is excellent. The all-day special includes a side salad, tea, bread and butter and mushy peas. Fantastic value!

Takeaways are back after issue with lease resolves, We have eaten here a couple of time recently on our own and with with our dinner club, The food is as good as ever, nice chips, currently best fish in town and good portions. If you want to taste fish and chips like you have never ever had before then go to Henry Higgins, as an old age pensioners we have found that if you want value for money then this restaurant cannot be beaten, large freshly cooked cod in a superb batter with masses of chips accompanied by a bowl of salad beutifully prepared containing lettuce,tomato,onion,gherkin and cue umber, also mushy peas,and various sauces to go with your fish and chips, bread and butter, pot of tea or coffee all for the amazing price of £6.95. The portion of fish is so big it hangs over the plate and the service is also brilliant, nothing too much trouble. Visit you will not be disappointed I promise you.

Went nearby for a official visit. Before catching the train, was looking for a nice restaurant for my lunch........walk by the fish, was looking for something light and different.Change my mind and came back to this fish and chips and it was right direction.Very nice fresh and hot.Will be back near future.

I have been to this fish and chip restaurant quite a few times over the last year or so and have NEVER been disappointed with the food or service. Great value for money. The restaurant is very clean and tidy (albeit a little old fashioned but that gives it it's character)Everyone friendly and the service fantastic. If you have room try to Old Fashioned Apple Pie and Custard - really delicious.

Three of us revisited Henry Higgins one lunchtime in January 2016, entering what was a near-full dining area with only two tables free. One of our group decided to give the chicken and mushroom pie a try whilst two of us went for the 'all-day fish special' where you receive either rock or cod, chips, salad, bread and butter, a choice of mushy peas or curry sauce plus a hot drink.Sadly, rock wasn't available on this occasion but the cod was a tasty alternative. The pie eater was happy with what was presented as well - and the request for extra gravy was no problem at all.A nice meal in comfortable surroundings, served by friendly staff and good value with all three of us adequately fed for less than £25.Definitely a place to return to in due course....

Very tasty fish and chips, good portion sizes, and, subject to what you order, they often chuck in a plethora of freebies with your family meal, such as mushy peas, curry sauce and tartare sauce. Well worth a visit!

By we used to visit here regular once a week but on one of our visits we think the management had changed hands apon walking in and sitting down we noticed a lack of customers ,our regular vistits were because there were set menues for the older aged patron that were all inclusive for a reasonable price but on opening the menu we noticed that there was a major change not only were they taken off but the general price structure had risen sharply that was the reason there were only one other couple there at the prime dinner time slot so alas we left what a shame but never mind they may learn the mistake in the end

I love this place. Visit every other week and never been disappointed. The staff are really friendly and always caring and kind to the special needs people that I take with me. The fish and chips are absolutely amazing. Always cooked fresh while you wait. The special is only £8.95 and is a massive piece of cod that hangs over the edge of the plate as well as chips peas or beans. Salad, bread and butter, and tea or coffee make up the offer. They will also allow you to take in your own alcohol at no extra charge. Parking is opposite in Sainsburys and is free after 18.00. Brilliant!

This restaurant produced can perfect fish - cod and skate- chips and mushy peas. Fresh cooked and piping hot. Waitress was very good and topped off with lovely fresh rolls and tea.

An eating companion and I found ourselves at Henry Higgins one evening in June 2015. Returning a little sooner after our January 2015 visit than I had envisaged - our first choice of fish & chips restaurant had to close suddenly due to 'technical problems' - and this visit became a golden opportunity for me to retry 'HH' after I had some reservations during my last trip regarding the quality of the batter used for my plaice.This time I went for a nice piece of rock and I'm pleased to report that the batter was perfect - just how it should be. A good sized portion of fish it was as well, served with a reasonable portion of good quality chips, a generous bowl of salad, some bread and butter and a choice of mushy peas or curry sauce thrown in for good measure (I went for the latter), it was all fantastic. The service again was excellent and the restaurant itself was clean, tidy and comfortable and now that my 'batter ghost' has been well and truly exorcized, I look forward to another visit to Henry Higgins in the very near future."That's better", I thought to myself as I left the restaurant. Maybe I should have been thinking "That's batter !?"

This fish and chip shop is a hit and miss you never know what sort of chips you will get, most of the time the chips are cold and not very nice, seem like they have been cooked ages ago. The only time i had to wait for chips to be cooked was worth the wait the chips were so much better, not sure why they cook so much chips at once.

Three of us visited Henry Higgins for the first time one Thursday afternoon in January 2015. After being warmly greeted we were seated and, before we knew it, our drinks order was being taken - cappuccino and two teas. Only one menu available per table it appears but it didn't take us too long to decide what we wanted and when the drinks arrived, we were invited to place our food order. Brisk service indeed....One eating companion went for beef and onion pie with chips and the other companion chose a small cod with chips but forgoing the salad. I went for a medium plaice with chips and salad.There was a bit of a wait for the food to arrive which I fully expected as the fish is freshly cooked. Eventually the meals arrived and good sized portions they were too. The beef and onion pie diner was very impressed with the quality of the pie. Both the small cod and the medium plaice were more than generous in terms of size as were the amount of good quality chips we received. Also, us fish eaters were offered tubes of tartare sauce which were pre-opened for our convenience - a nice touch.The side salad was one of the best I've had in terms of size and quality. Served in a bowl - shredded lettuce, sliced tomato, sliced cucumber, raw onion, a small pickled onion and sliced gherkin - all very nice.The batter was very crispy but I felt it was slightly too heavy for a flatfish such as plaice - in my humble opinion. A similar remark about the crispiness was made by the cod eater although, in hindsight, I couldn't help feeling that I might have been better off choosing a "chunkier" fish like cod, haddock or rock which may have been a better match for the type of batter used.Don't get me wrong, the fish was still very tasty and enjoyable but it's just that I'm more used to a lighter batter when it comes to a delicate fish like plaice. One thing that really did impress me though was that the fish remained piping-hot from first mouthful to last. The three of us left Henry Higgins suitably fed and watered and, all in all, pleased with the quality of food on offer. The service was excellent and the restaurant itself was found to be spotlessly clean and comfortable. Two menus per table where there are four seats might be a good idea though, seeing that the service is pretty rapid - and that's no bad thing...I'll be back, that's for sure, just to give that batter 'another try'. Hmm, maybe I'll go for a nice thick piece of rock next time...

Best British fish and chip ever since I came to England. Henry Higgins celebrates its 100-year-old brand. What a heritage! 2 hours of driving from London to Southend is paid off now. This city gives me a reason to travel back soon.

Had their all day special cod and chips. Chips were fairly standard, not the best nor the worst. The cod was fresh but lacked full flavour perhaps because the batter was not quite the same as some fish restaurants? I am not sure, but I do know that fish should be steamed inside the batter and then you get a more delicious, succulent dish. That was lacking to some extent but the restaurant makes up for it in other ways because you can have a small salad, mushy peas and friendly, fast service. Recommended for the price, but this should not be your sole reference point for fish and chips if that's what you want to experience in a seaside town.
